Chapter 1: The new neighbor and her child
Chapter Text
A hot summer day makes the air humid once more. Cicadas were chirping loudly and the chatter of students going home filled the air.
Nanami loosened his tie as he walked home, sweating from the heat around him and the striped, black suit he was wearing. He's now twenty-three years old and works at a big corporation as a salary man. After making savings, he finally was able to move out of his small student dorm and into a big apartment building. Even if it was filled with loud neighbors’, it was still nice to have a place for himself.
Recently the apartment next to him has been vacant. The couple that lived there previously broke up and immediately moved out — at least they had the money to do so.
Nanami's thoughts were mostly focused on money. How much do his clients need, how much does he have for himself for the month and so on.
He was working overtime already, trying to impress his boss and wanting to gain more money in the process. He wasn't sure at what point his aspirations changed. He only concentrated on working, barely found time to meet up with friends - there were only some evenings he went out with Yu, Satoru, Suguru and Shoko, because Yu asked him with his big puppy eyes - and had no interest in getting into a relationship. He had a few one-night stands when he was out drinking after work, but that was all. He wasn't interested in maintaining a relationship, and didn't see any use for it. That changed the day he saw who was moving in next to him.
Due to visiting a client, Nanami was able to head home earlier for once. It wasn't dark outside like usual, instead it was only 3 PM. Because of the heat he pulled off his suit jacket next, so it wouldn't get too sweaty through taking the stairs.
He lives in an apartment building with seven floors. It has an elevator, but he'd rather take the stairs than use that stuffy old thing.
Nanami lives on the fifth floor and can normally reach it without breaking a sweat, just not in the summer. His suit jacket was clamped beneath his arm, his tie hanging loosely around his neck and the few buttons of his dress shirt were unbuttoned. Once he reached his floor, he was surprised to see moving boxes stand all around the door next to his apartment. He moved to the railing to look down to the street, but he couldn't see any moving cars standing around. So, the person was probably bringing in the last of their belongings.
The tired salary man pulled back from the railing, thinking that he'll take care of the matter at a later time, just hoping his new neighbors wouldn't be as loud as the couple before them.
Exactly the moment when you came into a view. His amber eyes widened in surprise at the view in front of him. A woman maybe in her mid- to end-thirties, dressed in a white tank top and short jeans shorts. Unusual for Japan, but understandable given the temperature outside. Your skin was sweaty, and a few droplets rolled from your neck down to your cleavage. The sweaty white cloth of your top didn't leave much to the imagination anymore and Nanami couldn't help but swallow. As if he was in trance, he observed you while you were grabbing one of the boxes to bring inside. In view came your left hand, or more precisely the faint mark of a ring that had previously been on your finger — a divorce?
“Mommy, where's my tiger?”, the voice of a boy called from inside.
A mother?
Nanami observed you a bit dumbstruck, until his gaze met yours. You showed him a small smile and gave him a small bow — as much as was possible while holding a box — before you headed inside.
“Probably in your plushie box, baby!”, he heard you call back.
He swallowed again, feeling sweat roll down his forehead. Not just from heat. His pants started straining as he thought of the woman moving in next to him — a MILF.
Nanami fumbled for the keys in his bag, all the while wondering if he could get a glimpse of you again. Maybe he should offer helping with the boxes? Although he'd like to slip into something more comfortable first and not do it in a suit.
While he was sticking the key into the lock and turning it around there were little steps to be heard before a boy glimpsed out of the door. He seemed to be around five years old with brown eyes and pink hair. “Plushies…”, the boy mumbled to himself while looking at the boxes as if he'd be able to read what's standing on them.
Nanami blinked, processing the scene in front of him, before adjusting to it and scanning over the boxes. He quickly found the one that was adorned by ‘PLUSHIES’ in bold letters. A small, rare smile glimpsed on Nanami's face, and he stepped closer to grab the box for the boy to give it to him.
The toddler looked at him with wide eyes before calling for his mother. Amber eyes immediately flicked towards the door. His Adams apple bopped once you came into view again. Not too obvious he scanned along your figure before reaching back to your gentle smile.
“That seems to be our new neighbor, Yuji. You can take the box.”, the mother told her son, and her hand motioned for Yuji to step closer.
So, he does know about stranger danger.
The young salary man kneeled down to give the box to the boy, now known as Yuji, although it seemed like the box was too big for him. Yet as a boy he probably wanted to do it on his own.
The tongue of the boy stuck out to the side in concentration while he carried the way too large box into the apartment.
You nodded at Nanami and stepped closer to hold your hand out in greeting. You told him your name and his heart fluttered. Beautiful.
He grabbed your hand to shake it. “Nice to meet you. My name is Nanami Kento. Do you need help with the boxes?”, he offered politely while pulling his hand away. It still seemed to tickle after the contact. Your hand felt so soft.
“Oh, that is very nice of you!”, you answered with a smile, “but only if you're not too tired. You probably come from work, yes?”
Perceptive.
“It's no problem. I'll just bring my belongings away and put on something more comfortable.”, he suggested.
The mother agreed and headed back inside with another box.
~~~
After a short while Nanami headed back over to his neighbor’s apartment. He's now dressed in a blue T-shirt and black pants that reached down to his knees. He immediately grabbed three boxes to bring inside — purposefully to impress you.
Once he stepped inside, he glimpsed at you. You were holding Yuji in your arms, whose brown eyes were prickled with tears.
Nanami's brows raised in surprise. He let down the boxes and walked over to the two of you. “Is everything okay?”, his tone was laced with obvious worry and immediately met by your gentle smile.
“Yes, yes, he's just a bit fuzzy from moving.”, you reassured the young man.
Yuji sniffed and buried his head in his mother's chest. Nanami's gaze flicked down to the faint mark on your finger again. He couldn't help but wonder what happened.
Of course, you noticed his gaze and smiled sadly before mouthing ‘divorce’ towards him.
His eyes widened in surprise before he swallowed nervously, unsure of what to do now.
“I'll bring in your boxes.”, he headed towards the door to bring in more of them, while you calmed down your toddler.
While Nanami carried your belongings inside, he could hear you whisper reassurances to the toddler. How much you love him and that everything will be okay, that change is normal. His heart churned at the situation you're in, but he couldn’t help the small smile on his lips. You were truly remarkable.
All of the boxes were finally inside the apartment and Yuji was lying on the couch to nap. You stroked his hair before walking towards the kitchen to stand next to Nanami, who was leaning against the kitchen aisle.
Sunlight warmed the polished wood floors of the apartment. A butter-yellow sectional dominated the living area, facing a television on a light wood stand. Opposite of it was the light green couch on which Yuji was taking a nap. Behind it, a dark wood dining table with four light blue chairs sat near stacks of moving boxes. A glimpse into the adjoining kitchen revealed light cabinets, earning the apartment a warm atmosphere.
It was similar to Nanami’s apartment but already felt more welcoming than his own home.
“Thank you so much for your help today, Nanami.”, you told him with the most gorgeous smile he had ever seen on someone's lips. He showed you a smile of his own and just waved a hand dismissively. “It’s nothing. As neighbors we should help each other out.”
The mother chuckled and shook her head at his dismissal. “You’re fairly young, aren’t you?”
Now you seemed to ask the questions going around your head during the day, not that he minded. Still his brows raised in retaliation before he nodded. “I guess.”
“How old are you, if I may ask?”, you continued, eyes scanning him for a moment, up to his eyes and then down his body. Nanami gulped, feeling his cheeks flush at the gaze. He looked to the side and lifted a hand to scratch the nape of his neck. “I’m twenty-three.”
Your brows raised in surprise at the answer before you started chuckling, holding a hand over your mouth so you wouldn’t be too rude. His cheeks reddened even more in slight embarrassment. He wasn’t that young was he? He had a career and his own apartment after all.
“I’m sorry.”, you apologized between chuckles, “It’s just you seem more mature than your actual age.”
His heartbeat quickened at the melody of your laughter. Even if he wanted to be offended, he couldn’t help but want to hear more of it. “I get that often.”, he answered, clearing his throat after his voice had to crack at the word ‘often’, “As a child my father often told me I’m too serious for my age. In high school it started that I was told how mature I am for my age. I guess some things never change.”, the explanation eased the tension he felt.
You observed him with a gentle smile on your lips. “Well, either way, I appreciate the work of a nice young boy.”
Oh, now he’s a boy. Damnit.
“But I don’t want to disturb your evening any further, I can take it from here.”
Were you trying to be polite or throwing him out? Nanami’s mind started spiraling, he didn’t want to leave yet. “It’s no disturbance, really. Do you have any furniture that needs to be assembled? I don’t mind helping.”
“At this point I’m feeling like I’m using you, dear.”
The blush went up to his ears this time. Oh no, not nicknames. He swallowed. Sweat built on his forehead — obviously because of the heat.
Nanami wasn’t used to losing his composure this often, but it also wasn’t every day that he had to do with a beautiful older woman. Still, it was atypical for him to be this flustered through a woman. Some did much worse and he didn’t even break a sweat. — like squeezing their breasts close to his arm, stroking in areas they shouldn’t be touching in brought daylight, and yet he never really cared. He had his fun with them, but just as quickly forgot about them.
“I’m offering. It’s not using me, if it’s coming from me. You can tell me why you moved here while I set up the rest of the furniture.”, this was a good idea. He could learn more about you, spend more time with you.
You huffed amused but relented. You walked towards one of the two doors that led away from the living room area. “I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it, but I could need help assembling mine and Yuji’s bed. My husband was always the one doing this work, but-”, your gaze turned sad, and your brows furrowed, now seeming more angered than sad, “- there is a reason I’m here without him after all.”
The young man nodded in understanding and stepped into one of the rooms. He spotted the box with the bold ‘PLUSHIES’ and others that said toys. Yuji’s room. He’ll start with Yuji’s bed. Nanami headed towards the bed, while you started unpacking the boxes.
“Sadly, my story isn’t even that deep. I moved here, because my dear husband thought I wouldn’t find out, that he’s screwing the babysitter.”, your tone was bitter and when he glimpsed over his shoulder at you, he could see your knuckles going white at how hard you gripped one of Yuji’s toys.
Nanami’s gaze narrowed back towards the bed as he started screwing the wooden bars together. He would wait for you to continue talking instead of giving his commentary.
“It’s such a cliche.”, you scoffed, “To have a young female babysitter, but I thought nothing of it. He never gave me any reason to mistrust him. Never looked after other women, and even if he did that’s not a crime, he was always home on time, we regularly-”, you stopped, not wanting to overshare he guessed, “Let’s just say he had no need to be unhappy.”
Nanami’s gaze narrowed as he listened to your story, unable to be quiet much longer. “Often cheating has nothing to do with how happy or unhappy someone is in their relationship. It is about power. It's about control. Think about it – he held a secret that fundamentally altered your reality. He made decisions that impacted your life without your knowledge or consent. That's not happiness; that's dominance.”, he explained calmly.
The room got quiet while he was waiting for your answer, but since he didn’t get one, he turned around to look at you. His eyes widened in shock once he saw the tears that rolled down your cheeks. Nanami dropped the tools he was working with and stood up to place his hands on your cheeks to remove the tears. “I’m sorry.”, he immediately started, “I didn’t mean to open any wounds.”
After a few sobs, you slightly calmed down, placing your hands around his wrists before shaking your head. “It’s okay. You’re probably not wrong. It just isn’t easy.”, a small pause in thought, “I trusted this man more than anyone else in my life. We had a life together. We have a child together and then he cheats with a nineteen year old girl, who hopefully didn’t know better. Maybe he sweet-talked her, and she believed this was something special — I don’t know.”, a sigh left your lips.
Slowly the young man removed his hands from your face to let his arms fall down his sides.
“Maybe. At a certain age you’re not that clear about rights or wrongs. In love and war everything is allowed after all.”
You scoffed at his comment, but it did elicit a smile from you. “You sound old, dear.”
Nanami chuckled, a rich noise people apparently liked to hear. At least that idiot Satoru always told him to laugh or smile more.
“Told you.”, he remarked, earning another beautiful laugh. He’d rather hear your laughter than your sobs.
“I’m trying not to be too mad at her. My husband is in the wrong, no matter the girl.”, you continued, “To believe he screwed such a young girl behind my back- and Yuji really liked her.”, you spat and Nanami could just nod in understanding. He turned around to assemble the bed. “How did you find this apartment?”, he changed the direction of the story.
“I needed something I could afford with my own money, that still had enough space for Yuji and good preschools close by. This apartment was nice-looking and affordable.”, you answered.
Nanami hummed in understanding and took a moment before asking the next question. “Does your husband have visitation rights?”
The room was silent for another short moment. “Yes, we share custody. He has Yuji on the weekends.”
Once more he turned around to look at you, but your back was turned towards him while you sorted Yuji’s plushies. “He’s a good father, just a shit husband. Yuji loves him and as long as he isn’t abandoning our son, I’ll not take this from him.”, your voice was surprisingly even.
Nanami couldn’t help smiling. He couldn’t help but adore you, even after this short time. “You’re a good mother.”
The two continued setting up the room and after some silence Nanami decided to change the topic once more. “I know it is rude to ask this, and I apologize in advance, but may I know your age?”, he asked, feeling sheepish. He stood up straight to look properly at you, looming a few inches over your smaller frame, still he felt small under your gaze, under the gaze of a mature woman.
“It is indeed rude to ask this.”, you agreed, but a playful smirk adorned your face, “but since you’re helping me so nicely today, I’ll answer it.”, another break to get up the tension, “I’m thirty-six.”
Nanami’s amber hues went wide in shock. He suspected it, but to have it confirmed still surprised him. You’re so sexy regardless.
"Thirty-six. Right, well, thank you for indulging my rude curiosity." He offered a slightly embarrassed smile and then subtly shifted his focus back to the task at hand. “The bed is built, should we continue with yours?”
You nodded and headed into the bedroom with him. “Thanks for your help.”
Nanami waved his hand again. “It’s nothing.”
You continued conversing about random topics, until a small voice brought you out of the flow. “Mommy?” Yuji stood in the doorway, looking at you with his big brown eyes. You turned around and smiled down at your son. “What is it, baby?”, you kneeled down to hug him. The toddler immediately hugged you back and closed his eyes once more. He was still too young to understand the impact of what’s going on.
While you took care of Yuji, Nanami continued building the bed. Once he was finished, he excused himself for the evening. Yuji needed you right now and he didn’t want to overstep.
And yet this day felt successful. He had been so close to you and even was able to comfort you, to touch your cheeks. He still felt the fleeting touch of your hands around his wrist.
~~~
Back in his daily routine of heading to work at 7 AM in the morning and arriving back home at 8 PM in the evening, or even later because he was out drinking with colleagues or working overtime, he didn’t see you as often as he would like. Nanami wanted to keep up the contact with you, to keep talking to you, but somehow life always found its way between you.
It was in these next few days that he learnt once more why he wasn’t willing to uphold a relationship with his work, he just didn’t have the time. Dark bags were present under his eyes through working overtime for the whole week.
That evening he came back home at 10 PM. He arrived at his doorstep and fumbled with his keys, almost missing how the door next to him opened. Your head peeks out of the crack in the door to check on him. “Got a busy job, huh?”, your voice brought him out of his thoughts, and he turned around to look at you.
Surprise bloomed in your eyes once you spotted the dark bags beneath his eyes, nevertheless Nanami showed you a small smile, something he rarely did with anyone else.
“You could say so.”, he answered, his voice gruff from the long day.
“I know you probably just want to relax, but what would you think about some tea before you go to bed.”, it was a simple gesture, a nice suggestion, but that didn’t change the way his heart started thumping in his chest. He was tired, yes, and just wanted to fall into his bed, but your offer was too good to decline.
“That sounds lovely.”, he agreed, “I’ll just put my bag inside really quick.”
You waved your hand dismissively. “Take your time.”
Nanami quickly put his bag away and removed his suit jacket and tie before heading over to your apartment. He gently knocked on the door, careful not to wake Yuji. The boy must have a deep sleep, if he won’t hear that his mother has a visitor.
The door opened and finally he got a closer view from your gorgeous face. He couldn’t help the smile on his face at your invitation and he followed you inside. The apartment is now fully occupied. He followed you into the open kitchen area with a good view of the living room. Toys and plushies were strewn around the apartment. Few kids' books were lying on the couch table, and clothes were hanging over the backrest of the couch.
Following his gaze, your smile morphed into something sheepish. “Please excuse the mess.”, your voice shook him out of his thoughts and Nanami immediately shook his head. “There’s nothing to excuse.”, he answered calmly.
You started preparing lavender tea and Nanami couldn’t help but feel a bit flattered. You cared for him. Maybe just as friends, or even just as neighbors, but you did care for him.
“How are you adjusting?”, Nanami decided to start the conversation.
You faced the stove, so he could only see your back when you were answering: “Oh, it’s alright. I have way too much to do, but that also keeps me occupied from getting lost in my thoughts, which is nice.”, the answer was simple, spoken in a calm tone.
“And the little one?”, he continued, trying to sound as sympathetic as possible, which is difficult when you sound apathetic - also something Satoru told him. Why were they friends again?
You sighed softly and your shoulders slacked, a sign of exhaustion. “He misses his daddy and struggles understanding what is happening between us.”, you answered with honesty and turned around to look at the young man, “It isn’t easy. He must adjust to the new preschool, find new friends - although he is a social butterfly, so that worked quite well - and-”, you stopped to think of what else to tell him, “I’m scared of the day he’ll tell me that he wants to go to his dad instead of staying with me.”
Nanami’s brows furrowed, and he took a step closer towards you, wanting to comfort you, but without being too intrusive. He scanned your reaction, you weren’t pulling away and decided to place a hand on top of yours, that was resting on the kitchen counter.
He watched her eyes lift sharply to his. He could almost see her calculating, deciding how to respond. A flicker of doubt hit him. Should he pull back? Had he crossed a line?
And yet you weren’t pulling away, you were just looking at him and Nanami could feel his heartbeat pick up. He cleared his throat before answering to what you previously said: “I don’t think that this will happen. Of course, I don’t know Yuji or you well enough, but I’ve seen you interact. Obviously, he will miss his father, but I am certain that he wants to be with you.”
You swallowed and tears pricked in your eyes, a sight he didn’t want to see on your face. “Please don’t cry.”, his voice was a hushed whisper. He lifted his hand to stroke along your cheek. Once more you didn’t pull away from his touch. He wouldn’t go further than this, after all he wanted to help you and not make the situation worse.
Nevertheless a few tears escaped your eyes, which Nanami quickly removed with his thumb. Oh, how he’d love to kiss them away.
“It’s okay, everything will be okay.”, he whispered, now holding your face with both hands.
The brief release of tears gave way to a small, disbelieving scoff as you finally lifted your eyes to his. “I wanted to give you some support after you've had such a stressful week and now you have to comfort me again. How ridiculous of me.”
His chest felt warm at your statement, and he showed you a grateful smile. “Thank you for taking care of me.”, he said softly, earning a chuckle from you, “And I don’t mind comforting you. You have a hard time and as a good neighbor I’m glad to be of help.”, he boasted. It would’ve made you laugh if you weren’t staying quiet, so Yuji wouldn’t wake up.
“So, this is just about you being a good neighbor?”, you asked amused to which he answered with a confident grin.
“Oh, absolutely.”
Water started bubbling, pulling them out of this little moment. You turned around to shut off the water cooker and pour the hot liquid into a mug. Next you add the tea filter with nice lavender tea.
“You’ll drink up and then you’ll go to bed.”, you told Nanami, and he snorted.
“Yes, Ma’am.”
~~~
Over the next week Nanami tried his best to make room for you, between his work and meetings. It was mostly in the evenings that you invited him over to drink some tea, so he could calm down from the long day. Often you had to take care of Yuji, who was fuzzy, but the young man didn’t mind. The toddler was adorable and to see you caring for him made him even more excited to be in your presence. He had to admit to himself, that he had a bad crush on the MILF next door.
“Nanamin!”, Yuji said excitedly once Nanami stepped into the apartment. With open arms the small boy hurried to him to get a hug. The salary man immediately hugged the toddler and pulled him up into his arms. “Hello, little man. Did you take good care of your mommy?”, his heart skipped a beat through addressing you as ‘mommy’, but when he glimpsed over to you and only saw a smile on your lips, he felt his cheeks flush - relax, you act like some lovestruck idiot. It’s normal to call a literal mother that.
“Yes, I’m taking good care of mommy!”, Yuji said enthusiastically. He was truly adorable.
“He is.”, you confirmed with an amused smile on your lips, stepping closer to ruffle the toddlers' hair. He beamed proudly at you before twisting a bit to be let down. He hurried back into his bedroom to play.
“Looks like he has adjusted to living here.”, Nanami started conversing with you.
“Yes, thankfully he quickly found friends in preschool.”
You told him of the girl Nobara and boy Megumi Yuji has befriended. How he talks about them with a happy gleam in his eyes and how relieved you were that he’s happy.
Nanami listened to it all with a small smile on his lips. “And what about you?”, he asked once you finished.
“Me?”, you asked perplexed, unsure of what he meant.
“Are you adjusting? Did you meet new people?”, he asked curiously and was surprised to see a red hue on your face - was that a blush? Did he make you blush?
“Well, my work hasn’t really changed, but except for you I haven’t met any new people. I’m hoping to get to know some of the parents better though.”, you answered with a sheepish smile on your lips.
Nanami nodded in understanding and dared to nudge your shoulder. “There’s worse than having me.”, he stayed vague, didn’t clarify if it was just being your neighbor, a friend or even more?
He couldn’t help but feel an electric charge in the air once you looked at him, amusement written all over your face. You didn’t mind his teasing.
“There is, but I’d like to have more friends, than just the younger neighbor.”, you shot back and said younger neighbor held a hand over his heart in a dramatic gesture: “You wounded me.”
Quiet. Then the two of you burst out into laughter. It was a nice moment, securing your relationship even further. Wherever that may lead to.
Chapter Text
Since the divorce, life has felt like a whirlwind. A new apartment, an undeniably handsome but somewhat too-young neighbor, and Yuji's easy transition into preschool friendships had all happened in a rush. Now, as Yuji's enthusiastic tales of Megumi filled your apartment, you decided it was time to invite the boy and his parents over for a playdate. Maybe they’re sympathetic people and you can find new friends, next to the ones that only knew you and your ex-husband together or your twenty-three year old neighbor.
Currently you were cleaning the kitchen, your mind lost in thought about the current situation. The hand holding a cloth glides over the stove, almost on autopilot. Your heart was a mess. You are still deeply hurt by your husband's cheating, but at the same time you feel strangely attracted to Nanami, which is really not okay considering his age. And yet it fills you with joy every time he comes over and to see how Yuji has taken him to his heart and comes up to him with a cheerful “Nanamin”.
And the stupid bastard is attractive too.
It frustrates you that you can't share these thoughts with anyone. If you were to tell one of your old friends, there is a risk that they would tell your ex-husband. Even if it just happened by mistake.
The guilt of your feelings is beginning to eat away at you, but perhaps the situation will soon change for the better.
The sound of knuckles against wood brought you back to reality. That had to be Megumi and his father. Yuji, a ball of pure joy, was already running to the door, excited to see his friend. A small smile graced your lips while you trailed after him. The knocking persisted, and with a gentle hand on the knob, you opened the door to greet the visitors.
Instead of facing a friendly smile though, you were looking at a muscular chest. Perplexed, you blinked to process who was standing in front of you. Your eyes wandered up to meet green eyes that seemed to stare into your soul. A grin was present on a scarred lip, blue locks framing an otherwise pale face. What a large and handsome man.
The child, who snuggly leaned against the man’s chest suddenly got fussy and wanted to be let down.
“Hello Megumi.”, you said gently and ruffled his hair, before stepping to the side to let them in. “And you must be Fushiguro.”, you held your hand out to greet Toji. The man grabbed your hand to shake it: “Toji’s fine.”, he said casually, also addressing you with your first name, “I must apologise on behalf of my wife. She still has a lot of work to do and can’t come today.”
You raised a hand to wave it dismissively. “Don’t worry about it. I believe that won’t be our last playdate.”
Yuji and Megumi sat together on a blanket in front of the couch to play with Pokemon figures and whatever else Yuji had lying around. In the meantime you motioned for Toji to follow you into the kitchen. Since your apartment had an open concept, you were still able to observe the kids.
“Would you like something to drink?”, you offered.
Toji nodded with a smile on his lips. “Beer.”
You snorted at the immediate answer. “Drinking while watching the kids?”
“Gotta use every minute my wife is away for some freedom.”, he said dryly, but you understood that this was his sense of humor. “I can see who has the pants on in your marriage.” This earned you a laugh and nod from the father.
You grabbed a can of beer for him and a can of coke for yourself, so the two of you could settle at the dinner table. He sat down opposite of you and opened the can to take a rich sip and place it down with a relieved “Ah!”
“So you’re one of the single mamas, huh?”, Toji started conversing in a way too direct approach and yet you couldn’t help but chuckle.
There was no pity in his voice, no false friendliness. It was simply a statement and to not be pitied felt really good: “Indeed.”, you answered and glimpsed towards Yuji to be sure he wasn’t listening.
“Why’s a doll like you on the market?”, his tone was curious as he sipped on his beer. Doll. He did have a certain charm. You opened your can of coke to do the same.
“There was a misunderstanding. I thought it would be a good idea to hire a babysitter to look after Yuji. My husband, however, thought it would be a good idea to fuck the babysitter.”
Toji blinked, processing how straightforward you were before he started laughing. “How old?”
You scrunch your nose in disdain: “Nineteen.”
The man whistled after receiving the information: “Fresh meat.”
You snorted and placed a hand over your mouth. You couldn’t help but laugh at his dry humor. Toji smirked, the two of you seemed to click immediately.
Over the evening you started talking more freely about your private situation, while Toji also talked a bit about his life with his wife — it was obvious how much he adored her.
A sigh escaped your lips while you leaned your cheek against your hand. “Your wife is a lucky woman.”
Toji smiled: “No flirting, I’m happily married.”
“Oh? The man that is talking about his wife all evening is happily married? I’m shocked.”, sarcasm laced the sentence.
“Indeed, so hands off.”, he grinned and you kicked his leg underneath the table to which he snorted, “A bit too comfy are we?”
“Get used to it. Our kids seem very happy together.”, your voice was softer now.
Yuji and Megumi were napping on the blanket with Yuji’s head resting on Megumi’s belly.
Toji smiled gently at the sight: “Dumpling normally takes longer to make friends. You have a wonderful son.”
“I do.”, came your immediate response while you couldn’t help the proud smile on your lips. Silence fell over the room since you decided to observe the children.
They are so cute together.
The evening continued uneventfully and yet your heart felt warm with happiness. You found a friend, or at least that’s what it feels like with Toji. Afterall he agreed that you’d see each other more often. You were also interested in getting to know Megumi’s mother, she seemed like a remarkable woman from all you’ve heard.
It was 7 PM when Toji and Megumi left to head home. As a goodbye you ruffled Megumi’s hair. The boy was barely smiling, but you could see his little cheeks flush red. Cute.
Toji patted your shoulder in a friendly gesture before lifting Megumi into his muscular arms. Sometimes you couldn’t help but ogle. He was a beautiful man after all. Noting your gaze he just smirked, amused, and winked before heading out. Both of you knew it was just playful banter. He wasn’t interested and so weren’t you. Maybe if he wouldn’t have a wife and maybe if your eyes weren’t on someone else.
~~~
After another agonizing and long day at work, Nanami arrived back at the apartment building. As usual he walked up the steps towards the fifth floor, loosening his tie on the way. While he didn’t mind suits, he was always glad to take them off once he got home. As he arrived at the right hallway, a tired yawn escaped his lips. It’s time for some sleep.
Although he wanted to give into the tiredness and was glad once he could get into bed, his mind jolted awake when your apartment door opened. His lips curled into a small smile at the thought of seeing you, but that immediately vanished once a tall — and incredibly handsome — man stepped out of the door.
Who is that?
Jealousy rushed through Nanami’s system at the sight of the stranger. But it halted for a moment when he spotted the boy in the man’s arms.
A playdate? That had to be it, right? But what if he’s single?
The younger man’s pulse sped up and his gaze narrowed when the older man walked into his direction. His green hues met Nanami’s amber ones and Toji gave him a short nod before passing him, wondering why the brat was staring at him.
Nanami swallowed nervously and his gaze wandered towards your apartment. Should he head over and ask? He could outright say that he wanted to know if that was a friend of Yuji’s — and that's all, obviously he didn't care for the father — He shook his head immediately. That felt way too intrusive. He exhaled and decided to just go home and sort out his feelings, before he acted too rashly. You’re a single mother, older than him, probably not romantically interested even if you didn’t push him away when he touched you.
He opened the door to his apartment and stepped inside, pulling off his shoes first and then putting his bag to the side. Walking further into the apartment, he started putting his suit jacket to the side, then his tie before opening the buttons of his shirt. His way brought him into his bedroom where he looked at himself in the mirror.
Nanami never viewed himself as necessarily attractive, not that he truly cared about it. But Satoru and Suguru had always been more successful with women, also something he didn’t care about, he just noted it for himself. After all, order and structure are very important to him, including a healthy self-assessment.
However, this also changed once he got older. Nanami began to train his body, mainly for a healthier lifestyle, but he also had to admit that he quite liked the muscles and it seemed to be the same with the women around him. As he began to develop a broader back and more muscle, while giving his hair a proper cut and styling, more and more offers seemed to come from women. While Nanami wouldn't necessarily classify his face as attractive now, he knew that his general appearance was a big turn on.
But as he viewed himself in the mirror now, with the face of the stranger still in mind — his dark green eyes, the dark blue curls contrasting his pale skin, the confident smirk on his face and that roguish scar along his upper lip — Nanami felt unfamiliar insecurity wash over him. He felt small and young, like the skinny teenager with emo bangs he once was.
He was aware that he’s too young for you, but a small part of him wanted to hold onto the hope that in the future, something might happen between the two you of you, that maybe the closeness to you and Yuji would become something important and that it might turn into something romantic, but to see a man like that leave your apartment felt like a gruesome reality check.
You don’t even know if something happened between them. He could be married for all you know. Nanami tries to remind himself, but his insecurity prevails.
~~~
When Toji left you caught a small glimpse of blonde hair. Nanami had just come home. Your lips curled into a smile as you obviously were unaware of the younger man’s current insecurities.
After you brought Yuji to bed, you decided to head over to Nanami’s apartment to bring him something to eat. When he worked so long he often forgot to eat in the evening.
Was it just an excuse to spend more time with him? Probably. But after everything that happened, it's nice to have someone who appreciates you. Being thirty-six and single again, after ten years of marriage, doesn't make life any easier. Is he a realistic partner? Probably not, but for now the attention is very comforting.
You knocked on the door and waited for him to open it while holding a oven dish in your hands. A gap in the door opened and you met Nanami’s tired gaze.
“Hey, I’ve seen you come home after a long day.”, you told him with a gentle smile on your lips.
A small smile curled up on his lips, as relief filled his system, maybe he was too worried after all. He slightly opened the door for you, almost forgetting that he was only wearing grey sweatpants.
As the door opened and Nanami came into view your brows raised in surprise and a flush spread along your cheeks and up to your ears. Holy hell, that was getting unfair.
Why in the world was he so muscular? Although you had noted before that his back was brought, there is a difference between imagination and seeing reality.
You couldn't help but look, even just for a small moment, to check out his muscles. His arms were very defined and he had a beautiful six-pack and even a damned V-Line. Veins adorned his hands and arms, something you had noted earlier already, but tried not to think about. Your eyes moved to the side again, so you wouldn't ogle him even more.
With a shake of the head, you sorted out your thoughts and held the oven dish into his direction. “We have some leftovers I wanted to give to you, before you don't eat anything.”
The younger man smiled and grasped the oven dish into his larger hands, his fingers grazing along yours for a short moment. “Thanks you're always so considerate of me.”, his tone was grateful and his heart felt warm.
His eyes flickered to your door for a short moment before landing back on you: “Yuji had a friend over today?”, he decided to satisfy his curiosity.
Your lips curled into a smile and you nodded. “Megumi, yes. Yuji was talking non-stop about him and I've arranged a meeting today. They were absolutely adorable together. Toji, Megumi’s father, told me that he normally struggles making friends, but with Yuji he was very open and seemed incredibly happy.”
He nodded with understanding, but the two of you were brought out of the moment once you heard crying.
“Looks like someone is awake.”, you had an amused smile on your lips and bid him goodbye to go into your apartment again.
You headed back and opened the door to hear the crying of your toddler. He always helped with getting a grip back to reality. Once you reached his room, you spotted his red face from crying and immediately walked over to pull him into your arms.
“Mommy, don't go.”, Yuji sobbed and you held him close, stroking his back.
“I'm sorry, baby.”, you whispered and rocked him up and down, so he'll calm down. “I was just bringing food to Nanamin.”
The boy sniffled but his eyes shined with recognition at the nickname. “I was just next door. I'd never leave you alone.”, you whispered and continued stroking his back while his little body cuddled into you.
“Promise?”, he asked and held his pinky into your direction. You chuckled and adjusted him in your arms to have one free so you could loop your pinky around his. “Promise.”
Your son seemed relieved and slowly calmed down. His tears got less and less until his eyes closed from tiredness or exhaustion.
“Goodnight, my beautiful boy.”, you whispered and put him back to bed.
~~~
The familiar jingle of the preschool door unlocking sent a small thrill of anticipation through you. It was pick-up time, and soon Yuji would burst through those doors, a whirlwind of mismatched socks and slightly damp artwork. You leaned against the brick wall, the afternoon sun warm on your face, and took a deep breath, bracing yourself for the inevitable tales of finger-painting triumphs and playground dramas.
“You here?”, you heard a familiar deep voice and turned around to look at Toji. Your lips curled into a smile and you nodded your head in greeting.
“Hard to believe I'm picking up my child, huh?”, you answered amused.
“Very.”, he smirked and looked to the door to see the kids hurrying outside.
“How have you been?”, he asked since the two of you hadn't seen each other for a week.
You thought of what to answer. It wasn't much different than before, but with how everything was developing with Nanami, you really needed someone to talk to.
Your silence sparked his curiosity, black brows rising with interest. He addressed you with your first name and your gaze shot up to look at him.
“What's on your mind?”, he asked, trying to sound gentle, but the moment was ruined by the calls of their children.
“Mommy!”, Yuji called excitedly and ran over to hug you. You looped your arms around your boy lovingly, kissing his head.
Behind him Megumi and Nobara could be seen, talking to each other. Megumi naturally holds his hand up to Toji so that he can hold it. The little boy doesn't usually show any more emotion than that. But Toji had explained to you how he wasn't startled by this anymore. He understands his son struggled showing his emotions outright and he learned reading the little signs.
“Would you two like to come over?”, Toji invited you. He really wanted to know what was troubling you.
Maybe some nice gossip?
~~~
The Fushiguro’s have a very nice traditional Japanese house with tatami mats, doors out of paper and very minimalistic interior. It was beyond beautiful and you were excited to see more of it. Yuji was on your hand, so he wouldn't run around too much, babbling happily about the dinosaur he had been drawing over the day, while Megumi was in his father's arms, eyes dropping for a nap.
“Normally Dumpling takes a nap when we come home. I hope that's not a problem.”, Toji told you, earning an empathetic smile.
“Not at all. Yuji will most likely sleep as well.”, you answered, but immediately felt the toddler’s pull on your hand.
“I'm not tired.”, he whined, making you chuckle. You pulled him up into your arms to hold him close. “I know you aren't, baby.”, you then turned your head to Toji, “He'll still fall asleep.”, you whispered, earning a chuckle from the man.
Typical toddler behaviour.
Indeed once the two toddlers were in Megumi's room both fell asleep in his bed. Both were lying on their sides, facing each other to curl into each other.
You observed them with a hand over your heart, admiring the sweet scenery before you pulled out your phone to snap a picture. Toji was standing next to you, a smirk on his face at the sweet sight.
“I hope you don't mind the picture.”, you wanted his consent on having a photo with Megumi.
“No, send it to me.”, he answered and held out his phone with his LINE contact.
To get his contact information you placed your phone over his and once his number was saved, you sent him the picture from your children.
The tall father looked at it with a tender smile before motioning for you to follow him. “They'll be out for a while. Let's fetch something to drink and you tell me what's bothering you.”
With a grateful look on your face, you followed him to the living room. He fetched some green tea from the kitchen and sat down on the tatami mat next to you.
Delicate hands grabbed the handless tea-mug from larger, rougher hands to guide it to your lips for a sip.
“Now tell me: what's troubling you?”, Toji tried again.
You smiled in appreciation at his worry. “You sure you want the troubling reality of a single mother at the end of her thirties?”
He scoffed, taking a sip from his tea before answering. “Of course. Should I take a guess?”
Delicate brows raised, intrigued. “Amuse me.”, you allowed him to guess.
“Since you've put the fact that you're single at the first position I'd say suggest three options.”, he held his index-, middle-, and ring-finger up — on the ring finger glistened a beautiful White-Gold ring —, “number one) your ex-husband is now dating the nineteen year old babysitter—”, your nose scrunched in disdain at the comment, “number two) you want to move on and want to have a partner of your own and number three) you already have someone in mind, but you feel it's too early to move on.”
A snort escaped your lips and you held a hand over your mouth as you started laughing. He's pretty spot on.
“If it is number one.”, Toji continued, “I'd be willing to beat your husband up.”, this earned him another laugh, “for number two, I have a friend that could interest you.”
Your brows knitted with surprise but also disbelief. “Seriously?”
Toji's lips turned into a grin. “Yes, a good friend of mine. His name is Shiu Kong. Good looking guy with short brown hair and a little moustache — that actually suits him, don't worry — he's a nice man with a stable income. His worst habit is probably that he's a smoker.”, he explained with a shrug.
Although you weren't interested in meeting someone new, you were curious to know how this Shiu really looks like. “You have a picture?”
He pulled out his phone again to scroll down in search of a picture. When he found one he tapped on it and turned his phone so you could look at the picture.
It was cute with a big grinning Toji and the laughing Shiu. A man with brown spiky hair, warm although tired looking brown eyes and indeed a small stubbly moustache that did suit him well.
Your lips curled into a small smile and maybe you'd be interested if your interest wasn’t with someone else.
Toji observed your reaction and the sad glimmer in your eyes. “So there is someone else, huh?”
“Why in the hell can you read me so well?”, you asked, irritated.
He grinned and took another sip from his tea to be a bit secretive. “I'm good at judging people. Helped with my former job.”
Your brows, once more, raised in irritation, but also with curiosity. “And what was your former job?”
He chuckled and shook his head. “That's something for another day. Now who is that person you like?”
Your eyes narrowed at him. You wouldn't forget about his job, but you really needed to get this off your chest.
“It’s-”, a frustrated sigh escaped your lips, “It's my neighbor.”
The father mustered you for a moment. “That explains indeed why that blonde guy was staring at me.”
Your eyes widened in surprise. “Could be another neighbor.”, you scoffed, but you weren't fooling anyone.
“In that case you would've said ‘no, not that one. Another one.’”, he answered like the smartass he was.
With another sigh, you lifted a hand to rub underneath your eye so you wouldn't smudge your makeup. “Fine, yes, that is the one.”, you grumbled.
Toji grinned, his face showing off his confidence. “So? Where's the problem? He's hot.”, he told you as if it was the most casual topic in the world.
Amusement filled your being at his blunt statement. “You casually admit that another man is hot?”, you changed the topic and Toji nudged your side. “Don't go off topic, doll. Where is the problem? He's your neighbor, from the way he stared at me I'd suggest he's into you.”
You let out a shaky breath. If only it was that easy. “That’s part of the problem, Toji.”, you answered and met his gaze as he raised a questioning eyebrow, his earlier amusement fading, replaced by genuine curiosity. “How so? A handsome young man who’s clearly interested? Sounds like a win, if you ask me.”
Your fingers roamed around the edge of your teacup, while you shifted uncomfortably in your seat. “You mentioned the point. He’s a young man. Too young.”, you mumbled, guiding the cup to your mouth to sip some tea.
Toji blinked, a slow dawning in his eyes. “His age? He didn’t look too young though. Younger than us for sure, but not too young. He was wearing a suit so the boy isn’t like nineteen is he?”, he inquired.
A vein of annoyance popped up on your forehead at the remark. “No, he is not nineteen!”, you snapped, “He’s definitely an adult with his own job and his own place.”
Toji leaned forward, still confused by the situation. “So what’s the issue, lady? Just tell me how old he is instead of making it so stressful.”
A wry smile touched your lips despite your inner turmoil. At least his attitude wasn’t changing.
“He’s twenty-three.”
The word hung in the air between you. Toji’s expression shifted from surprise, but it mixed with a hint of understanding. He took a slow sip of his tea, taking some time to consider your words. “Twenty-three,”, he repeated softly, more to himself than you, before his gaze wandered back to you, “ and you are…?”
Of course he could guess you’re similar in age with a toddler and a divorce after ten years, that much you did tell him already, but you never spoke about your actual age. You don’t ask a woman her age. His wife always reminded him.
“Thirty-six.”, you answered timidly, the number feeling heavy on your tongue.
A moment of silence passed as Toji processed this information. He set his teacup down before continuing. “Thirteen years.”, a simple statement. The age gap.
You nodded, your gaze following your fingers that were trailing the edge of your now empty tea cup. “He’s just starting out his life, his career, while I am more established. We are at such different stages. While we can still talk about a lot of things, what if I can’t keep up with his lifestyle? What if he wants to go out drinking or clubbing with friends? Toji, I can’t go out to do that anymore.”, your thoughts halted for a moment, “Not that I’ve ever seen him go out. He’s mostly working or maybe he leaves immediately after work to go out, because he often comes home late.”, at this point you knew you were overthinking and you had to go back to the more realistic problems.
You continued, your voice laced with worry: “What about the future? What if he wants kids in the future? I’m not sure if I could go through this again and if I’d even be able to. Having children from now on forward isn’t exactly getting easier.”
Toji was quiet through it all, listening to your worries that were finally able to break free.
“It just feels so complicated. A lot more complicated than just liking someone who’s hot and lives next door”, you finally looked up at him, your eyes filled with a mixture of longing and apprehension.
“He’s wonderful and gets along well with Yuji, but as much as I’m drawn to him, this age difference feels like a huge obstacle.”
Toji observed you, his expression serious and understanding. He nodded slowly, absorbing everything you just told him. “Your worries are understandable, but you said he has a job and he has his own place. Judging from his suit probably a salaryman with a good income. That’s more mature than a lot of twenty-three year olds I’ve met. It’s not like he’s fresh out of university and still figuring things out.”
A frustrated groan left your lips and you rubbed a hand over your face. “No, he’s surprisingly grounded. That’s part of why I-”, you halted, frustrated by your own emotions, by your attraction, “well, you know.”
Toji’s lips curled into an amused smile while you hid your face in frustration. “Let me phrase this differently for you, doll. A handsome twenty-three year old man is into you and you’re into him. He gets along well with your son-”, as if on cue Megumi and Yuji came running into the living room, now awake after their nap, before running out again – like cats with zoomies –, “he’s mature enough to have a career and his own apartment and you still worry about the ‘What if’s?”
A frown adorned your face at his simple summary. You pulled your hand away to look back at Toji. “I have no time to date around, Toji. If I get with a man again it has to be for the future.”
The man seated opposite of you scoffed and shook his head. “Or you just do what you want for once. You are obviously into him, so why not try it out? What if it works out in the end?”, he suggested and his brows raised as if challenging you.
You huffed and observed how the kids came running in again, around the table and then out. “Is that a risk I’m willing to take?”, you mumbled more to yourself.
Toji scoffed, a shit-eating grin now on his face that worried you. “If you ask me I’d say you should fuck him.”
A chuckle escaped you at his blunt statement, but when you heard a small “Fuck!” all of a sudden and spotted how Toji froze, it turned into full on laughter.
“Oh shit, not again.”, Toji groaned and turned around to look at Megumi.
“Shit!”, Megumi repeated with his stoic face.
“I’m dead.”, Toji groaned.
“Shouldn’t you know that you can't curse in front of a toddler?”, you asked him with a grin on your lips to which Toji showed you his fist. You knew he meant the middle finger and it made you laugh.
“Sounds like fun in here.”, another voice sounded from the entrance door. A gentle and feminine voice. Your lips curled into a smile and you stood up. Finally you'd be able to meet the famous ‘Mamaguro’.
“Mama!” Megumi stopped to run to his mother. That was the most excited you had ever seen him.
“Hope he doesn't rat me out.”, Toji whispered to you, earning an amused smirk.
“Hello, Dumpling!”, the woman said and held her arms open to hug him.
“Yuji is here!”, Megumi told her, excitement lacing his voice that you rarely heard before. It warmed your heart to hear him being so happy about your son’s presence.
“Oh really?”, she matched his excitement.
A little hand grasped around your larger hand and you looked down to your son with a gentle gaze. “Want to say hello?”
Yuji nodded enthusiastically and the two of you walked towards the door.
Toji's wife was a beauty with spiky, slightly shorter blue-black hair, that resembled Megumi's without a doubt, beautiful blue hues and pale skin. She was slightly smaller than you and had a gentle smile on her pink lips.
“Oh, that must be Yuji!”, she said delightedly and kneeled down to hold her hand out in greeting. Yuji's eyes widened in surprise at the enthusiastic greeting but he immediately hurried towards Mamaguro to shake her hand. “Hello!”, he said a bit too loudly as usual. A gentle smile adorned your lips at the sight while Toji walked up behind you and placed a hand on your shoulder.
The woman looked from your son up to you with a smile on her lips. “And you must be Yuji's mother!”, she stood up to hold a hand out in greeting, “Toji told me so much already. I'm happy he finally found a parent he likes!”
You grabbed her hand but couldn't help to look over your shoulder so you could grin at Toji. “You talked about me?”
“Shut up.”, he grumbled and looked to the side.
His wife chuckled and observed how he pulled the hand away from your shoulder.
A single mother is friends with her husband and she's still so welcoming. That's admirable.
Meanwhile Yuji and Megumi went back to Megumi's room to play, leaving the adults alone in the hallway.
“I hope my husband wasn't too much trouble.”
You laughed in delight, she had the same humour as her husband. “Not at all. I'm also grateful to have found another parent I like. Friends are always a difficult topic after a divorce.”
Her eyes lit up in recognition while her mouth formed an ‘o’. “Of course, you probably have to ‘share’ friends now or they've chosen a side.”
Air was released from your lungs in a sigh. “If only they'd chosen a side. Then they'd be on my side. Of course I can't force them to, but-”, you halted, unsure if you wanted to over share again.
The eyes of Toji’s wife widened and she immediately held her hands up in an apologetic manner. “I didn't mean for it to get too personal. I'm sorry!”
You glimpsed from the wife back to Toji. “How much did you tell her?”, you asked with a deadpan expression.
A bead of sweat rolled down his forehead at being caught. “Excuse me? What do you mean?”
“I've been married for ten years, Toji, I know the drill of secrets. If I tell them to you, your wife also knows them.”
Both smiled sheepishly, a bit embarrassed to be called out like this. “I'm so sorry.” Mamaguro bowed down to apologise.
With another sigh you shook your head and motioned for her to stand upright. “It's okay. I did the same with my husband. Then you know that he cheated with our nineteen year old babysitter?”
The woman pouted before nodding. “He's an asshole and I agree that your friends should have sided with you.”
Now she's getting more sympathetic again.
~~~
You spend your time with the Fushiguro’s for a few more hours before heading home with a tired Yuji in your arms.
“Did you have fun?”, you asked the toddler, while balancing his form that was clinging to you like a monkey.
“Yes, next time we can also ask Nobara.”, he mumbled tiredly. His eyes flutter close, he's unable to hold them open.
A hum of agreement left your throat. “Next time we'll invite her too and whatever friends you'd like to play with.”
His small lips curled into a smile and his small chubby cheeks turned red from happiness. It filled your heart with warmth, with love for your beautiful son.
Once you arrived at your apartment Yuji was fully asleep. You searched for your keys while trying to stabilize the toddler in your arms. That's when the door next to you opened and Nanami stepped outside. He looked over to you and smiled, taking a few steps towards the two of you.
“Should I take him?”, he asked in a gentle tone and held his arms open.
You gave him a one up, noting the black dress shirt matched with black slacks and shoes.
Is he going out?
Instead of asking though, you put Yuji into his awaiting arms to pull out your keys to finally open the door and get inside.
Nanami followed you inside to bring Yuji to bed. He went directly to Yuji's room and brought the toddler in. He no longer asks to enter; he simply does. This doesn't bother you at all; instead, his presence fills you with warmth and happiness.
“If you ask me I'd say you should fuck him.”
Sounded Toji's statement in your brain, earning a red hue on your cheeks that you quickly wanted to get rid off. It's not that easy!
Nanami stepped out of the room again, walking towards you while at the same time his eyes roamed up and down your body before they settled on your face. “Had a long day?”, his velvet voice asked, sending an involuntary shudder down your spine.
“Yes, Toji invited us over to his home, so Yuji and Megumi could play together. They're so cute.”, you told him with a gentle smile on your lips. Adoration vivid in your eyes through the love you felt for your son.
Nanami nodded in understanding and crossed his arms over his chest, highlighting his muscular forearms through the rolled up sleeves of his dress shirt. Your eyes strolled to the side, you didn't want to eye him too much.
“The boys are very close now.”, your gaze brightened at the memories of what happened over the day, a smile blooming instantly, “And I met Megumi’s mother! She’s wonderful. She already knew about Yuji, and Megumi was so proud of his friend visiting. And apparently Toji’s mentioned me.”, you chuckled, a touch of delight in your voice, “Isn’t that sweet? I’m so happy to have made a friend!””
Your enthusiasm brought another smile to the younger man’s lips.
And was that a flicker of relief you caught in his eyes?
“You already have a friend.”, Nanami stated matter of factly, obviously meaning himself. You laughed softly and nodded. “Of course, I do. But there’s a difference between having my young neighbor as a friend and someone my age, another parent.”
He hummed in understanding, closing the small distance between you. “Even so, I want you to know that I’m here.”, he murmured, his voice dropping to a near whisper as his hand gently brushed a stray lock of hair behind your ear.
Too close.
“I know.”, you replied softly, your gaze meeting his. The air around you felt charged as unspoken possibilities hung in the air.
But when he took another step, now standing impossibly near, a wave of nervousness washed over you. Your cheeks flushed, and your eyes dropped to the floor. A small smile played on Nanami’s lips as he gently tilted your chin up with his thumb and forefinger.
Your heart started beating faster at the gesture and you had to wonder who the older one was in this situation. How was he able to make you feel so flustered?
“Are you going out?”, you changed the topic, your voice soft and almost a whisper.
Amber orbs held the gentlest gaze you’ve ever seen before, even more mesmerizing than your ex-husband’s eyes — who had looked at you in such a way less and less over the years.
“Yes.”, his deep voice rumbled, his thumb still a warm anchor beneath your chin, keeping your gaze locked with his, “I’d invite you to join, but I know it’s difficult with Yuji.”
The idea made you laugh and shake your head in disagreement. “Oh, I’d be terrible company. Half of the time I’d be whining about my aching back or feet, or just how exhausted I am.”, you answered dismissively, but Nanami’s confident gaze didn’t waver.
A subtle curve touched the corner of his lips, his eyes holding a playful glint: “You’d be incredibly cute when you’re whining.”
The blush on your cheeks got worse, as one brow raised in question. “You’ve been drinking already, haven’t you?”
Nanami started laughing at being caught: “Only three or four beers to wind down after work.”, he dismissed your statement.
“Thank you for the invite, Nanami-”, you wanted to start, but he stopped you.
“Kento.”
You blinked at the interruption. “Huh?”
“Call me Kento.”, he repeated more clearly, “If you can address your new ‘friend’-”, he really made air quotes, “with his first name, you can also address me with it.”
Your smile widened with quiet amusement. “Okay, Kento.”, now it was his time to blush and he pulled his hand away, slowly grasping on to what he was doing.
“You shouldn’t let your friends wait.”, your words were hushed and gentle, your gaze softening as you watched him.
Nanami hummed in agreement, his amber eyes holding yours with a lingering warmth. A faint, almost wistful smile touched his lips. “I’d still wish you could accompany us.”
You chuckled softly, a hint of self-deprecation in your tone. “I’m getting too old for bar hopping or clubbing.”
His eyes remained steady, a thoughtful expression settling on his face as he absorbed your words. A beat of silence passed before he spoke, his voice a low rumble.
“Nonsense.”
You sighed softly, but conceded with a playful tone entering your voice. “Perhaps next time, if Yuji is with his father. Wouldn’t want to miss out on seeing you try to navigate a crowded dance floor.”
While he was excited about his success, Nanami’s nose scrunched in disdain at the thought of joining a crowded dance floor. “Only if you join me.”, he bargained.
He earned an eyeroll, but you didn’t have it in you to deny. Maybe he won’t even remember it tomorrow: “Fine.”

Chapter Text
The air thrummed with a low, insistent bass that vibrated through the soles of Nanami's shoes even before he reached the entrance. A knot of people waited in front of the velvet rope, a mix of anticipation and impatience etched on their faces.
Laughter and snippets of loud conversation sounded through the night, highlighting the nightlife of Japan.
The bouncer scanned IDs under the harsh glare of a nearby streetlight. A faint haze of cigarette smoke hung in the air, mingling with the scent of cheap perfume and something vaguely fruity. Car headlights swept across the building, momentarily illuminating the dressed-up crowd and the club's neon-lit sign.
Some people were chatting excitedly, their bodies already swaying slightly to the distant music, while others stood in smaller groups, their hushed tones suggesting shared secrets or pre-party jitters. A couple leaned against a nearby wall, locked in a close embrace, oblivious to the surrounding buzz.
As Nanami approached, he scanned the crowd, looking for the familiar faces of Satoru, Suguru, Yu and Shoko.
Although his mind was still stuck on you. The way your cheeks blushed, how you looked back at him with a gentle smile. How excitedly you've talked about your day and how you said he's your friend. His heart fluttered faster when he thought about the close proximity to you and your soft cheek against his rough hand. This can't be platonic.
His eyes scanned along the crowd, searching for his friends. How hard can it be to find a mop of silver hair?
They landed on a couple of women that were smirking or winking at him, but none of them caught his interest. Not after seeing you tonight and having you so close.
“Kentooo~”
Through the crowd, Nanami heard his first name called out. He looked up to spot the waiting Yu, his hair styled neatly for the club, his dark brown eyes twinkling with excitement of the awaiting night. He was the one to convince him to join. His best friend and the ray of sunshine he just can't say no to.
Next to him stood Suguru. Recently he started styling his hair in a half bun with his long black hair cascading down his back and one strand hanging over his forehead. His arm was hanging around Satoru’s shoulder. All three of them were dressed in black, similar to Nanami. Satoru matched Yu’s motivated wave with a grin on his lips, his bright blue eyes on full display tonight, almost outshining his silver hair. A bit to the side waited Shoko, dressed in a short red dress that hugged her curves perfectly. Her brown locks had grown very long and her tired light brown eyes landed on him while she finished smoking her cigarette. Nanami walked over to them, giving them a short wave before he reached them.
“Took you long enough.”, Shoko told him, placing her hand on his shoulder, her breath now smelling of cigarettes with a note of beer.
Nanami sighed, shaking his head. “Sorry I’m late. Just as I was about to leave, my neighbor needed some help.”
Satoru’s gaze sharpened at the mention of the neighbor, a smirk playing on his lips. “Your neighbor, huh? The one you mentioned… the MILF?”
Nanami’s eyebrow twitched in annoyance. He shot a pointed look at Yu, who winced and mouthed a silent “Sorry.”
He then collected himself before continuing: “It just slipped out. You showing interest in someone is rare, you know?”, a bead of sweat traces a path down Yu’s temple.
Chuckles rippled through the group and Nanami sighed in exasperation. “Yeah, whatever, now it’s out, isn’t it?”
Suguru chuckled, meeting Nanami’s gaze: “Never thought you had it in you, Kento.”
Satoru nuzzled into Suguru’s side, a slightly tipsy grin on his face: “I always knew he was an old soul, deep down.”
~~~
The music pulsed through the club, a relentless beat that seemed to vibrate through their bones. The dance floor was a sea of bodies, swaying and grinding to the rhythm. In the midst of it all, the five friends moved through the crowd together.
Satoru was a whirlwind while dancing, his cheeks flushed and blue eyes sparkling, his arms flailing while he attempted to keep up with the music. Yu was equally tipsy and stumbled beside him, his laughter echoing through the room. Suguru, not at all bothered by what they were drinking, kept a firm hand on Satoru’s shoulder while guiding him through the crowd and preventing any potential collisions.
Across the dance floor, Nanami and Shoko moved with practiced grace. Their movements were fluid and effortless, a comfortable dance between two friends who knew each other well. Shoko eyed Nanami with a smirk on her lips and pulled him closer. “I’ll have a smoke. You’ll accompany me.”
It was a statement, not a question. Most likely she wants to talk about his neighbor.
Nanami followed the woman outside, not minding to talk about the situation. As much as he loved Yu, the man often gets way too excited about current situations and Shoko could give him a more level-headed opinion.
Outside they walked around a corner to get some quiet from the loud music thrumming through the air. Shoko leaned against the cold stone wall and pulled a pack of cigarettes out of her bag, which she secured under her right arm. After pulling out the pack she searched for a lighter and cursed, struggling to find them.
Nanami held out a hand, offering to take her belongings so she could search easier. Shoko wasn’t one to say no to help — most of the time she expected the men to cater her without having to ask — and with that she placed her lipstick, a pair of glasses and even a pad in Nanami’s waiting hands before finally finding her lighter.
She sighed with relief, grumbling a quiet “Fucking finally” before lighting up her cigarette and taking a drag.
“You’re a med student and still smoking.”, Nanami scolded with a small smirk on his lips, while Shoko eyed him with a narrowed gaze, “I’m still smoking because I’m a med student, asshat.”, she retorted, but both knew this was in a good manner.
“So, what is it with that MILF of yours?”, she cut straight to the point.
A part of him would like to take a drag from her cigarette, just for a dramatic effect. “I’m not sure.”, he answered, his eyes cast downwards to the ground and his arms crossed in front of his chest with the rolled up sleeves highlighting his muscular frame, “I like her, that isn’t a secret, but I’m not sure how she feels about me.”
An understanding hum left Shoko’s throat while she exhaled smoke through her nose. “What’s so different about her in comparison to other women you’ve met?”, she asked curiously, taking another drag to savour in her lungs.
He sighed, running a hand through his hair in exasperation. “I don’t know.”, he admitted, “The moment she stepped out of her apartment, I felt mesmerized. She’s beautiful and seeing her interact with her son felt all the more intriguing. I wasn’t intimidated by her age or anything, I was intrigued and wanted to know more about her. I never felt that before.”
Her brows raised while she exhaled the smoke. “Is this about her age? Are you into older people?”
Nanami shrugged his shoulders at the question. Has he ever considered dating someone older? He wasn’t sure. Ever since he started working he was thinking about how much money he was making and not about something unimportant like dating. “If I should have a preference for older women, then I’ve never realized it before.”
Shoko hummed in understanding, eyeing him up and down. “Okay, let’s scratch the kink part. You’re a good looking man and she’s- what? divorced?”
Nanami nodded in confirmation. Did Yu really spill all that? He really can’t be trusted.
“Divorced. Okay. You’re a good looking guy. Why didn’t you just fuck her as you normally do?”
The young salary man flinched at the blunt statement of his friend. She wasn’t wrong. Normally if a woman did interest him, he just flirted with her and got over with it after a night, but this time- “It’s different.”, he said solemnly and started explaining what happened between them the last few weeks.
Shoko listened to his explanation, still leaning against the brick wall, the tip of her cigarette glowing a fiery orange in the dim streetlights. A thin plume of smoke curled upwards, vanishing into the night.
“So,” she said, exhaling a stream of smoke, her eyes narrowed slightly with amusement as she watched Nanami, “Let me recap. You’ve had the hand-holding, the divorce deep-dive, the ‘Nanamin’ stamp of approval from her son, and a pre-club flirt session. Sounds like you’re halfway to a domestic relationship.”
Nanami shoved his hands into his pockets, his gaze fixed on the dimly lit street in front of them, a mixture of anticipation and lingering thoughts of his neighbor swirling within him. “Don’t exaggerate, Shoko. It’s-”, he halted for a moment to let out a frustrated sigh, “It’s complicated. She’s older, she has Yuji… and she’s been through a lot.”
Shoko took another drag, the orange shimmer lighting up her face for a moment. “You’re too caught up on the age gap, Kento. Obviously you’re into each other. Yuji likes you and maybe that makes him an excellent wingman, if you think about it. As for her past, maybe you being a good thing in her present is exactly what she needs.”, she flicked ash onto the pavement, “The real question is, what are you going to do about it?”
Her opinion hit close, making him shift his weight, his gaze flicking towards Shoko. “Tonight is about letting loose, right? Catching up with everyone?”, he tried to change the topic, so he can process her words.
The blunt woman snorted, a puff of smoke escaping her nose. “Right. And while you’re ‘letting loose’,” she said while signing air quotes, “your mind will be miles away, replaying every shared glance and accidental touch. Trust me, I’ve seen this look before. You’re smitten… and also fucked by the way.”, he flinched once more.
She took a final drag, then stubbed out her cigarette under the heel of her boot. “Just don’t spend the whole night staring into your drink, dreaming of your lovely neighbor. We actually want to have some fun.”, she pushed herself off the wall, “Now let’s go in again, before the others start to worry.”
~~~
At 5 AM it was time for the five adults to head home. The wasted Yu was hanging on one side of Nanami, while Shoko was holding onto his other side. Suguru said his goodbye’s to them while carrying Satoru on his back. The silver haired goof was knocked out for good.
“Don’t you want to go with them?”, Nanami asked Shoko. He knew she’s closer with Suguru and Satoru, but it seems today she was fine with his and Yu’s company.
“No, I’m fine.”, she mumbled tiredly.
For now he’ll bring them to his apartment, so they can sober up before heading home. It was easier than bringing Shoko and then Yu home. What he didn’t expect though was to see you standing in front of your apartment door with a sleeping Yuji in your arms. Dark bags adorned your eyes and your gaze strayed towards him once he stepped out of the elevator with Yu on one arm and Shoko on the other.
“Successful night?”, you joked, your voice just above a whisper, lips curling into a smirk.
Nanami chuckled and shook his head. “They’re my friends. Yu and Shoko. Yu is wasted, Shoko just tired.”, he explained, matching her whisper, “What happened?”, he continued, a worried frown now present on his handsome face.
You just shrugged, your eyes mirroring the defeat you felt: “It just wasn’t our night. Yuji had nightmares and it was hard to calm him down, but something about the sound of passing cars seems to relax him.”
He nodded, his face showing sympathy.
Meanwhile Shoko opened her eyes, still tired, but also more alert once she spotted you — the famous neighbor and her son.
Nanami looked down at her, his eyes giving her a silent warning not to embarrass him. She retaliated with a nod.
“Don’t get caught up by us. We can manage. Get some rest.”, you told him with your usual gentle smile that made his stomach flutter.
“Alright, but if you need anything, don’t be afraid to knock.”, he reminded her before stepping inside with his friends.
“I understand you now.” Shoko mumbled, letting go of Nanami so he could bring the wasted Yu to the couch. “She's gorgeous. Wouldn't say no to that.”
Nanami huffed at her statement, his lips curling into a smile. “If it was just about physical attraction it would be easier.”, he said gently, letting Yu down with a soft ‘thump’, “what do we bet he will sneak in my bed again?”, he strayed from the topic for a moment.
Shoko chuckled at the notion and nodded in agreement. “We don't have to bet. He will sneak into your bed.”, the tone of her voice was amused.
Nanami let out a tired sigh and pulled a blanket over Yu, so he’ll be more comfortable.
“Get yourself comfortable.”, he motioned to the guest room for Shoko who nodded in agreement.
“Good night, lover boy.”, Shoko teased before closing the door of the guest room.
~~~
“Of course I’d find you here.”, Nanami’s deep and resonant voice sounded behind Shoko.
It’s early in the morning, too early for the time they went to bed, and yet Shoko was out in the hallway smoking a cigarette. The orange bud lit up her face in the parts the light rays of the morning sun weren’t hitting yet.
She regarded him with a hum of agreement while looking out on the street.
“You do know I have a balcony?”, he continued with amusement lacing his voice. His friend nodded in affirmation: “Couldn’t open the door. Did you lock it?”
His brows furrowed in thought: “Yeah, sorry, you’re right.”
While engulfed by their silent conversation the elevator on their floor arrived with a soft ‘ding’. Both their gazes turned to the door, only for their eyes to widen in surprise.
Out of the elevator stepped a man with a large muscular build, larger than Nanami even, with wild spiky pink hair and familiar brown eyes. Nanami felt his stomach drop with nervousness.
Please don’t be your husband.
The hulking man pushed past them, his shadow momentarily engulfing Shoko and Nanami, to knock at your apartment door with rough knuckles. Of course.
Quietly, the two young adults were observing the man. Nanami’s jaw was subtly tight, his gaze fixed on the closed door, while Shoko leaned closer, a curious grin on her lips as they waited for the scene to unfold.
You opened the door and greeted your husband with a calm, almost practiced smile on your face, Yuji held snugly in your arms. Your eyes, however, flickered momentarily past your ex-husband, noticing the two young adults that were standing at the railing, before settling back on the man in front of you.
“Papa!”, Yuji chirped excitedly, stretching his small arms yearningly toward his father. The large man scooped the boy up, effortlessly lifting him into his arms. “Hello, Pineapple. Ready for Disneyland?”, he asked, his voice a deep rumble, like the grumble of an old engine.
Shoko propped her chin thoughtfully in her hand, her elbow resting on the railing’s rim. “She’s got a good eye.”, she whispered, a knowing glint in her gaze, but at Nanami’s sharp, scrutinizing gaze, she added, “not character-wise, of course, and not as good as you.” A sheepish grin touched her lips while Nanami simply rolled his eyes in exasperation.
Meanwhile Yuji’s eyes drifted to Nanami, and his eyes widened with recognition and pure delight: “Nanamin!”, he trilled, making the young man perk up, a genuine, unguarded smile appearing for a fleeting second.
“Good morning, Yuji.”, he said, his deep voice still a little rough from just waking up.
You looked toward them, your calm smile softening into something tender as your eyes met Nanami’s across the short distance. There was a silent understanding, before you quickly looked away and instead to your son and ex-husband. Meanwhile your husband tracked your gaze with a predatory intensity, his critical look now dissecting Nanami, confused by his son’s enthusiasm for a stranger. He then turned back to his ex-wife, his brow furrowed with an unspoken question.
“Sukuna, this is my neighbor Nanami.”
Notes:
Your husband finally appeared! Yay!
At first I just wanted to let him be some unnamed ex-husband, but then I had the idea of just inserting Sukuna in that position. He works for a cheating ex-husband.
Chapter Text
“Sukuna, this is my neighbor Nanami.”, you introduced Nanami to your ex-husband. This wasn’t what you had intended to happen, especially after such a short time-span. How would Sukuna react to your neighbor, a young and handsome man? — even he could acknowledge this.
As if the meeting had triggered something, Nanami took a step forward and held his hand out to Sukuna in a polite greeting: “A pleasure, Sukuna. I'm Nanami Kento.”, his voice was deep and even, while he offered him casual greetings his gaze said something else.
Sukuna's amber eyes narrowed dangerously, nevertheless he took a step closer, just like Nanami did before to assert dominance, and took hold of his hand in a greeting. Both seemed to have a tight grip on the other and the tension in the hallway grew palpable.
You swallowed nervously while eyeing the exchange. Your gaze strayed to Nanami's friend, a beautiful young woman with warm brown eyes, long brown hair and dark bags beneath her eyes. Shoko took another drag from her cigarette while observing the confrontation in front of her. Her brown eyes met yours for a moment before going back to her friend.
Meanwhile Yuji was completely oblivious to the tension around them and innocently chimes in: “Nanamin, will you come with us?”
Oh, you can basically see a vein pop up on Sukuna's forehead.
“He's just excited!”, you quickly stepped between them to stroke Yuji's head, who immediately leaned into his mother's touch.
Sukuna looked back to his ex–wife, his larger frame looming over her like a silent threat. “Is our son always so attached to strange neighbors?”, he asked, his voice almost dripping with venom. He made an emphasis that Yuji is their son, another way to get his point across.
You could feel your heart beat fast in your chest, not expecting such an escalation in the morning. You always wished for harmony, especially in front of Yuji, who looked so innocently at the people important to him.
Yet in that moment you remembered something:
All the times Sukuna held power over you. Moments you shut up to keep the peace instead of facing him properly. While you always held a fond memory of the marriage with Sukuna, it was after the divorce you understood his manipulative tendencies.
Telling you, you're overreacting when you were in your right mind to get angry or taking over a conversation in your stead.
~~~
You impatiently clicked your phone button to light up the display. 2:15 PM. You and Sukuna wanted to meet up with friends at 2 PM. Where were they? No text messages, no updates, nothing.
You tapped your foot impatiently against the ground, their lateness already stressing you out.
With their tight work schedule it was already difficult enough to find time together, so why can't they be punctual for once in their life.
You were brought out of your thoughts by a large hand being placed on your thigh. “Babe, will you stop the tapping?”, Sukuna asked, mildly irritated.
“Can't they be punctual at least once in their life?”, the pitch if your voice went up a notch through frustration.
“It's been fifteen minutes. Stop overreacting.”, your husband huffed.
Your brows furrowed at his dismissal. “You know as well as I do that we barely have time to meet up, so it would be nice if everybody's punctual.”
His brows furrowed and he rubbed along the side of his nose, trying his best to keep calm: “Don't make a scene, if they come. How about we just order some food already?”
~~~
New Year's Eve. A party of friends. The music boomed around them while strobe lights let every corner of the large penthouse shine in a different colour.
While your husband had joined the festivities you were standing at the side and sipping on a drink, overwhelmed by the loud crowd around you. You hated parties and yet you came here for Sukuna.
Once your husband noticed you missing for too long, he came over, his arm slinging around your waist and his large hand squeezing your side.
“What are you moping at the side for.”, he leaned in, his lips close to your earshell.
“I am not moping. I am simply a bit overwhelmed.”, you clarified, earning a deep chuckle from Sukuna.
“It's just a party, babe. Relax.”
You rolled your eyes at his very bad attempt of soothing you.
“I'm trying my best, but you know I'm just not comfortable at parties!”, he was starting to annoy you.
Sukuna sighed in frustration at your behaviour. “Do we have to do this at every party? Try to have a bit of fun will you?”
~~~
Slowly the veil that narrowed your senses, the love you held for this man, it started to diminish. This man had no power over you anymore, so instead of backing away, you'd finally face him properly. You slowly exhaled to brace yourself for what you were about to say next:
“Nanami is no strange neighbor.”, you started, your voice surprisingly even — normally you're the person to cry in an argument, which frustrated you greatly and gave Sukuna more power in your relationship —, “He has helped us a lot ever since we've moved into this building. Yuji has grown fond of him, yes, because Nanami regularly spends time with us to help. And before you even think about complaining about it-”, you placed your index-finger on Sukuna's chest, your eyes narrowing dangerously, “think clearly about why exactly your son and I live here.”, it was vague enough so Yuji won't understand it, but the implication was clear for Sukuna: He cheated and you won't take the blame for Yuji getting attached to someone else.
Your ex-husband's eyes widened in shock at your words, not expecting you to talk back at that moment.
Nanami's surprise turned to a slow, knowing smirk. A quiet pride filled him as he watched your unexpected assertiveness. He observed your newfound resolve with approval, a silent acknowledgment of your strength and self-reliance. He understood that this wasn't entirely about him, it's about your own emancipation.
Shoko’s mouth opened in surprise at the display, the cigarette occupying her lips just now dropping to the ground. Her gaze met Nanami's for a moment and the young adults nodded in understanding. What an amazing woman.
Sukuna observed his ex-wife, his adams apple bopping as he swallowed. He was shocked by her sudden outburst — was this really necessary in front of Yuji? — And yet he couldn't deny the point you made. He cheated and maybe a small part of him hoped to make amends. This reaction just now, showed something completely different.
Did you move on already? And what about this blonde brat? A neighbor? Laughable.
You held his gaze, not backing off, only removing your hand from his chest.
~~~
“Papa, let’s go! Disneyland!”, Yuji suddenly chimed in, breaking the tension.
Sukuna’s hand, which wasn’t holding Yuji, flexed into a fist for a moment before letting lose again. This will annoy him for the rest of the day. The boy had been patiently waiting in his father’s arms for long enough now. Sukuna’s brow twitched for a moment, annoyed at the disturbance, but maybe it was for the better. He just knew he had to find out more about this ‘neighbor’ in the future. Maybe it wasn’t his right to know more of her relations. He’s aware that he fucked up the moment he gave into the flirting of the babysitter.
It was a mistake.
Or so he told himself.
What man in his right mind could resist a young woman in booty shorts who flirted relentlessly with him?
He was weak. He gave in. Not just once.
He was in no position to ask for forgiveness and yet he had trouble shaking off the hope of your forgiveness, of trying it again even if it was just for Yuji’s sake. He had no feelings for the babysitter, it was just ___. Why can’t you understand this?
Sukuna struggled for the first time when he met your new friend, Toji Fushiguro. Thankfully that man seemed to be head over heels for his wife and therefore Sukuna didn’t have to worry too much. He still felt a glimpse of jealousy, but he tried his best to keep it at bay – for Yuji’s sake and for a possible reunion.
But Nanami? Nanami Kento was new to this equation.
A young man living next door to his wife. Ex-Wife. Handsome – he begrudgingly had to admit this to himself – and if he lived alone in this apartment he had to have a steady income. That brat also got along with his son. Yuji’s little eyes beamed the moment they spotted Nanami. It made him sick. The way you looked at Nanami, Sukuna knew this look all too well, since it had once been directed towards him.
A ‘Tsk’ escaped between his teeth before his gaze focused back on his son: “You’re right. We should be there early after all.”, he turned back to face you.
The defiance in your eyes was clear. It was the first time you truly stood up to him. Should this fill him with pride or anger? He wasn’t sure, but he’ll hold back for now. For Yuji’s sake.
This isn’t over. Not yet.
“I’ll bring him back tomorrow.”, Sukuna changed back to his ‘papa’-persona.
You gave him a court nod, the smile was reserved for Yuji as your eyes went to your son.
“Have fun, baby.”, you wished Yuji goodbye and kissed his cheek before pulling away.
Sukuna turned away from you to head towards the elevator with Yuji in his arms. “Don’t enjoy your childfree weekend too much.”, he ended the conversation before stepping into the elevator.
~~~
Shoko sneaked back into the apartment, leaving Nanami alone with you.
Your gaze was still on the elevator, where Sukuna had left just moments ago, before wandering back to Nanami. He casually leaned against the railing of the hallway.
“So that was the famous cheating ass.”, Nanami asked, his brows raised, eager to learn more.
An exasperated sigh left your lips as you leaned against the door of your apartment. You crossed your arms over your chest in a passive manner: “The one and only.”, came your reply, gaze wandering to the ground to contemplate the previous exchange.
Nanami’s amber eyes, similar in shade to Sukuna’s and Yuji’s eyes, wandered to the elevator for a moment before wandering back to you. He also needed a moment to make sense of what just occurred. It was too early and he certainly did not sleep enough.
“Doesn’t seem like he’s a fan of me.”, he concluded, which made you snort in amusement.
A knowing smirk curled up on your lips and you nodded in agreement, “Not at all.”
You observed Nanami for a moment, taking your time before continuing, “You carried yourself well. Not many people hold their stance in front of someone like Sukuna.”
Your younger friend chuckled and shook his head. “So you know you’ve married a scary man?”, he asked with a small smile on his lips. Even with bags underneath his eyes and especially with his bed-hair that stuck to his forehead, Nanami looked unbelievably handsome. It wasn’t the best moment to ogle, but it was hard not to in this intimate atmosphere.
With a soft hum you affirmed his question: “What can I say? It’s nice to have a large man to protect you.”, you joked with a tired smile.
A shake of his head adjoined with a scoff was the reaction to your statement. “So ‘large’ is your criteria in finding a man?”, Nanami teased.
The lighthearted banter seemed to ground you once more, slowing your quickened pulse after the confrontation. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”, you stepped closer to lean against the railing next to him, taking in the landscape in front of you. The empty streets that would soon be filled with people going to work and families heading out for activities on a nice Saturday.
“But to be serious for a moment: Sukuna was a good husband or so I thought. I’ve just remembered a few older instances where he wasn’t taking me seriously and I believe there are much more I forgot about. It doesn’t make him an inherently bad husband, just a flawed human. There might've been problems we could have worked out and even overcome, but not after he cheated. And yet he still seems to hold a certain possessiveness towards me. Maybe a small hope that I might take him back.”, you told Nanami thoughtfully. Meanwhile he quietly listened, only nodding in understanding and to show you that he’s listening, “He did the same thing with Toji, the whole show of stepping closer to assert dominance and shit.”, you shake your head at the memory, “Just that Toji is our age and while smaller similarly muscular. You can imagine what happened.”
Nanami smiled amused and regarded your statement with a nod. “A stare down.”
"Precisely. But seeing Mamaguro – the nickname I gave his wife, shut up – seemed to calm him down. With you it’ll be different. To have a young single man living next to me, who has a lot of contact with us and who Yuji is fond of, will irk him.”
“I understand.”, Nanami acknowledged the new information he had just received. He’d be in for some passive-aggressiveness and alpha-male bullshit from your ex-husband, but for you that is something he didn’t mind enduring. “I’ll be mindful of that.”, he added with a subtle emphasis in his voice that showed how serious he took this matter.
Although with his next statement occurred a shift in his voice, more teasing, “Well, now I know the competition.”
The subtle suggestion hung in the air, causing a sudden, unexpected flutter in your chest. A wave of warmth spread across your face, painting your cheeks in a rosy hue. Although you were sure his obvious flirting the night prior was due to the alcohol he had been drinking, he now didn’t seem intoxicated anymore.
Nervously you stroked a loose strand of hair behind your ear, sucking in the edge of your bottom lip in thought.
At your unsure reaction Nanami’s gaze softened a bit. He gently took hold of your hand, gentle enough for you to pull it away at any time. “I was teasing. Take whatever time you need.”, the tone of his voice was just as gentle as the hold on your hand, making your heartbeat speed up even more.
A shaky exhale left your lips and anxiety filled your system. You were happy about his attention, but also unsure of how to proceed.
“Are you serious?”, it was the question haunting you ever since he had come so close to you. Was he just flirting for a fling or was he truly searching for something more serious. Was this playful banter or could it be something more?
Responding to your question, Nanami pivoted, his entire body now facing you. His gaze met yours directly, a gesture that underscored the importance of his next words. His hands reached out and gently enveloped both of yours, to further emphasize his sincerity. His grip was firm yet reassuring, a silent prelude to a significant statement. He addressed you with your first name: “I was captivated the instant I saw you, and that feeling has only grown stronger over time. I adore the way you handle yourself and Yuji. How you go about your day after everything you had to endure. Even with the stress of being a single mother you keep an eye on me and worry if I’ve eaten enough or not and therefore I only want to give that back. To watch over Yuji for you is a joy and seeing you two brightens my day every time.”
With every sentence, you feel your eyes widen more. His words were so heartfelt, so raw and they felt… true. It resonated so deeply, that a wave of emotion brought tears to your eyes.
Already familiar with your tears, Nanami’s lips curled into a knowing smile. One of his hands let go of yours to lift it towards your cheek and remove the wet streaks.
“No rush from my end. We can move at whatever speed makes you comfortable. Want to be friends? We'll be friends. Want to go on a date? We'll go on a date.”, he was completely sincere this time. No beating around the bush. He didn't want to scare you or make you feel more intimidated by the situation than you already are.
“But I'm not misunderstanding myself am I?”, he asked with a small smile, although the way you leaned into his touch already answered his question.
“No, you're not.”, you admitted, “but with my recent divorce, with Yuji and…” the age gap “- just this whole situation is a mess.”, you exhaled, already overwhelmed by your feelings, “I like the way it is right now, but… if you'll give me time..”, you weren't sure how to finish, but the reassuring squeeze to your hand was easing your mind.
“No rush, truly.”, Nanami's voice was just just about a quote whisper, sounding more attractive than anything else you've heard before.
Your eyes met his as silence settled between you.
A small gap in Nanami's apartment door offered the only view as Shoko and Yu, who was still half-asleep but had been nudged awake by Shoko for this important, observed the scene. Both couldn't help but smile brightly, truly moved by the raw honesty exchanged between their friend and his crush and the quiet beauty of the moment unfolding before them.

Thanks for the Kudos, Bookmarks and comments! Feedback is always appreciated! 🩷
And sorry for the long wait! 🙇🏼♀️ Tense scenes are always difficult to write, so I needed some time.
If anyone wants some vibes: while writing Sukuna's jealousy I listened to songs like "meant to be yours" from Heather's and "tear you apart" from she wants revenge or "Heartbeat" from Childish Gambino, but while writing Nanami's confession I only listened to "My Everything" from Jongho. On Loop. Help 😂 just itches the brain the right way.
