“Hold the door!”

Alec looks up from his phone and sees a vision of beauty rushing towards him. He only just manages to slam a foot in the way of the closing door, so enchanted is he by the approaching man. The door slides open again and the man glides inside, leaning against the wall opposite Alec.

For the Malec Discord Live Writing Prompt Pride Month Event - Day 1:Love
This was meant to be 500 words….right! 🙄💜💜

Thank you so much Skylar for organising this.🥰

I thought this would be a one-shot but the prompts kept leading me back and now we are up to ten ‘chapters’ which are all really one-shots linked into a story generated by prompts. I’m having fun writing them. I hope you enjoy reading them. 💜💜

To my dear friend Renee because love is sorely needed right now, here is some written for you. 💜💜

Chapter 1: Love

Chapter Text

This is a story about two men. One who thought that love would never be for him, and the other who was hurt so badly by love that he gave up thinking it was for him. You know the ending, you’ll say. Why bother? Ah, dear Reader, because it’s how you get there that really counts.

We’ll give the first man the name Alexander, known as Alec by friends and family. He grew up in a family with a name, the Lightwoods, together with ‘old’ money and values that limited their vision of the world. They weren’t necessarily bad people, but they were absent parents, expecting too much of their first son, loading his shoulders with responsibilities - he started taking care of his siblings when he was five years old, he was expected to get the highest grades and join his father’s business, he was expected to marry a rich socialite to bring wealth and status to the family name.

Nature or nurture? Our dear Alec grew up to become someone to rely on, protective of his siblings, taciturn (“heavy is the head that wears the crown” his younger sister, Isabelle, once told him), loyal, empathetic and with an acute sense of justice. When he realised at the age of fifteen that he had a crush on his best friend, his world crashed around his feet. He knew, even at that young age, what was expected of him and he was not going to be a disappointment. Chasing his parent’s approval was deeply ingrained, yet it still took him two weeks to get back up again, telling no one but Isabelle. So he also had to hide the parts of him that longed for romance, love and a sense of freedom. By the time he was twenty four, he didn’t often smile, took his anger out on archery targets and punch bags, and pretended that he enjoyed working in corporate law, when all he really wanted to do was write a novel. His love life consisted of occasional dates with uninteresting women that his parents set up for him. He had long since resigned himself to a loveless marriage, with two kids and a dog. Love was not for him, and a part of his heart had broken at that knowledge.

The second time he had a crush, it felt more like the world had shifted under his feet and he wasn’t sure he would ever find his compass again. It was both scary and exhilarating. But we are getting ahead, because we first need to introduce the second man in this story. Magnus Bane.

Magnus was not born to money and he lost both his parents when he was five. Can you see the overlap already? From this young age he went from one institution to another, occasionally in a foster home, but they never lasted long. He met his two best friends in the ‘Carstairs Care Home for Adolescents’ when he was 17 and stayed there until he was 21. Tessa and Jem, who ran the home, saved his life. Perhaps not literally, but who knows what might have become of him if they hadn’t offered him a place. It took him a year to trust them and then he flourished.

Magnus had always had a flamboyant streak, but years of institutionalisation had dampened his flame. At the age of 18 he not only realized he liked boys and girls, but he started discovering make-up, hair dye, antique stores and second hand clothes places selling good quality vintage clothing. Magnus had finally found himself. His tough upbringing had made him cautious but he had a huge generous heart, a gregarious nature and the desire to work hard.

By the age of 23 he had founded his own fashion line and was being lauded as the newest Vivian Westwood. He was in big demand socially and enjoyed the “delights of the flesh” as one very snarky junior spread as a rumour before he was fired - goodbye Mr Starkweather. At 24 he fell in love with a model called Camille, who everyone warned him to avoid, but the heart desires what the heart desires. A few days after his 25th birthday, where he had proposed to Camille and been accepted at a huge party with hundreds of socialites, Magnus found Camille in bed with a rival designer from Russia. His heart broken, and once again single, he determined never to fall in love again.

So, two men, two broken hearts and a love story in the making. But how to make it? Do you believe in coincidences, dear Reader? Or is the universe shouting at us? Or some other ‘power’? Who knows? But I do know that our two men meet, fortuitously, in an elavator, and their lives will never be the same again.

It happens like this.

Alec knows that he is late, but today he has a headache, the shower head fell off while he had shampoo in his hair, the coffee machine broke down so he had to stop for a Starbucks, which is not his favourite, but Georgio’s is another 5 mins walk and he doesn’t have the time. Because he’s late.

He rushes to the elevator, tapping his foot as he waits for it to arrive. The clients he has today, the Morgensterns, are notoriously difficult and to be honest, a pain in the ass, but they pay well, and Alec has been able to establish a tenuous relationship with the son Sebastian, so he ends up with most of the work. He taps out a quick message to his assistant who is likely already there, to tell her he is on the premises. The elevator door opens and he waits while a couple step out, then rushes in, anxious for the door to close.

« DOOR CLOSING »

“Hold the door!”

Alec looks up from his phone and sees a vision of beauty rushing towards him. He only just manages to slam a foot in the way of the closing door, so enchanted is he by the approaching man. The door slides open again and the man glides inside, leaning against the wall opposite Alec.

“Thank you, pretty boy!” Magnus says, winking at the gorgeous man who hasn’t stopped staring at him since he shouted out to keep the doors open.

Magnus is used to attention. He knows his dress sense is unusual, one of his best friends, Ragnor, calling him “startling” once. His make-up, though discreet in the daytime, is not to everyone’s taste and has been known to get the hackles up of certain people trying to defend their masculinity. The young man standing before him, however, though very tall, fit-looking and with the most astonishing hazel eyes, doesn’t give off ultra-masculine vibes, and Magnus has learnt to trust his vibe-meter. He pats himself on the back when he sees the man blush to the roots of his gorgeous black hair.

« DOOR CLOSING »

“Floor 48, if you would be so kind,” he says, nodding at the wall of buttons that the stranger is standing next to.

Alec hears the words, but he is still so absorbed in taking in the most beautiful man he has ever seen in his life, that he doesn’t register them.

He blinks. “Er, sorry!” he replies, clearing his throat. “What floor?”

“48, please,” the man says, and this time Alec registers that he has a voice just as gorgeous as he is. It takes all of Alec’s willpower to concentrate as he presses the button.

“You going to the same floor?” Magnus asks, curious. He shares the floor with Meliron who didn’t mention a client or any other visitor today. Not that the pretty stranger looks like the type of client Meliorn would attract but he’s been wrong before.

Alec looks at the man, feeling a little confused until the words properly sink in. “Er, no, no! 50. I'm going to 50,” he answers feeling flustered, his fingers scrambling for the next button.

Magnus raises his eyebrows. “What misdemeanour have you carried out in a past life to deserve a meeting with the Morgensterns?” he asks, jokingly.

Alec grimaces and then tries to hide his grimace so it all comes out as an awkward half smile. He doesn’t really know what to reply. He doesn’t know the guy. He could be a Morgenstern plant. Sent to trick Alec into an indiscretion that allows the Morgensterns to sue him for millions. Although the guy doesn’t look like someone who would even know about the Morgenstern’s let alone go undercover for them. Though he does know that they are on the 100th floor. But they also own the building so he would know about them. Good grief. Alec's brain feels as if it is tying itself into knots over a simple remark.

Magnus watches as a myriad of emotions flash across the stranger’s face. He starts to feel sorry for him. He knows the Morgensterns are a shady organisation. He has one month left on his lease and then he’s out of here. The man opposite him is clearly being faced with a dilemma, and Magnus feels bad about putting him on the spot.

“I apologise,” he says, smiling gently. “That was a very inappropriate remark and I withdraw it in its entirety. In fact, to make amends, how about a coffee when you have finished your meeting?”

Alec stares at the man as if he has grown horns. Did he just invite him for coffee? Boring, staid, Alexander Lightwood? The man who Isabelle has said could get lost in his own closet because all his clothes are black, so it’s impossible to see anything in there. The man who is so deep in another closet that vines have grown over the door.

The man continues to smile at him, his eyes a warm brown with flecks of gold, and Alec realises he has a huge crush, and it might be good if the floor opened up right now and he could sink to his demise out of sight of this beautiful and kind stranger.

“I’m Magnus, by the way,” Magnus says, stretching out a hand.

Alec’s mouth opens and closes, while his brain does somersaults and a cheerleader routine. He finally reaches out for the hand, closing on warm fingers and cool metal.

“Er, Alexander, though people call me Alec,” he manages to say, finally.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Alexander. I rather think such a lovely name suits such a lovely man.”

Magnus knows he’s flirting but seeing the blush reach Alec’s hairline, gives him a bit of a thrill. It’s been a long time since he allowed himself to feel anything. More than three years. This man, with one awkward, but cute smile, and a few words, spoken admittedly in a deeply sexy voice, has managed to break down a part of the wall that Magnus had so carefully constructed around his heart.

Magnus takes the conversation back to where it belongs. Coffee. “Please accept my offer of an olive branch,” he says coyly, eyes twinkling.

Alec studies him for a moment longer, sees his offer as being genuine, even if it is couched in a flirtatious nature. His job has taught him to read people well and he rarely makes a mistake. And if this is a mistake, then it’s one he’ll gladly make, just to spend a few more minutes in Magnus’s magical company. Because this man must have some kind of magic to make Alec fall for him so fast.

“I’d like that, thank you,” he replies, giving Magnus a small crooked smile.

Magnus feels his insides melt at that smile, and it’s all he can do not to ask directly for Alec’s telephone number. He doesn’t want to scare him off though. But he’s determined he’ll have it by the end of the day.

“Just come down two floors when you are finished. I’ll be in all day.”

Alec lowers his eyes slightly and nods. “I should be finished before lunch.”

“Great! Perfect! We can have an upgrade! Lunch on me!” Magnus replies, smiling brightly at the thought of taking Alec out for a meal.

Alec’s smile widens and Magnus feels like he’s been caught in the dazzle of the sun. “You don’t have to do that,” Alec says, “but I would love to, all the same.”

Magnus’s jaw is starting to hurt with how broad his grin is. “Me too. I’d love to, too,” he answers, feeling a little stupid with how much he is attracted to this man.

« 48th FLOOR »

« PING »

The doors open and both men stare at the space outside as if it is something unexpected.

« DOOR CLOSING »

Magnus jams a foot in the door space. He takes another look at Alec, who is looking right back.

“I’ll see you later, Alexander,” he says, his voice rising slightly despite himself.

Alec smiles softly. “I’m looking forward to it.” The urge to lean forwards and kiss Magnus is almost overwhelming. Alec holds himself back with a steely grip.

Magnus feels a crazy urge to throw himself at Alec and kiss him stupid. But restraint is in order if he is to win over this man. He sees the timidity in those blushes and he knows he has to take this slowly. He steps through the doors and turns around.

« DOOR CLOSING »

He raises a hand as Alec disappears from sight. He feels like he’s on cloud nine walking into his office, walking on air.

“Have you been drinking again?” Catarina asks, frowning at him.

Magnus scoffs. “Those days are over, dearest Cat. No, this is a feeling I thought I had closed off forever.”

Catarina looks at him, amusement in her eyes.

Magnus throws himself down on the sofa opposite his desk.

“I’m in love,” he sighs, dramatically

Alec watches Magnus disappear, then wraps his arms around himself, unable to stop smiling. If this is what love feels like, then he is addicted. He is already planning where he will take Magnus next as he steps out of the elevator. Being in love is the best feeling in the world.

A story of love at first sight, dear Reader, which is nothing short of magical. But we all know that Alexander Lightwood and Magnus Bane will always find each other, in every universe!

Chapter Text

Dear Reader, I hope you didn’t think I had abandoned you! Surely these two adorable men and their story of love at first sight deserve a little more attention? Are you as curious as I am to find out what happened next? Let’s take a look.

“So he’s coming over after his meeting?” Ragnor asks, sounding bored, but Magnus knows him well, and he sees the curiosity in his eyes.

“Yes, by which time you will be safely ensconced in your office, pretending that you don’t do lunch,” Magnus teases back. “In any case, I really don’t think you should meet yet, you’ll scare him away!”

Ragnor’s head snaps up from where he was studying some plans on Magnus’s desk. Got him, Magnus thinks.

“I have time for lunch today, and was counting on eating with my family. Don’t let me down,” Ragnor replies, scowling.

Magnus tries to hide a smile. He loves his found family but ever since Camille, they vet every person he meets, even if it’s just a coffee. Lunch would absolutely require their presence! He turns to Catarina, but she just shrugs her shoulders and goes back to looking at the newest velvet samples.

“You are both far too protective, but I love you, so you’d better not spoil this for me or I will disown you.”

Ragnor hurumps. “I have no idea what you are talking about. We are great company. Alec will be thrilled to meet us….if he knows what’s good for him.”

Magnus flings his arms up. “See, there it is! LEAVE…HIM…ALONE!”

Catarina steps up and puts her arms around him. Magnus is stiff for a moment but then he sinks into her embrace. She does give amazing hugs. “He’s winding you up. If Alec is a good man then we’ll love him too. Stop worrying.” She looks over to Ragnor, bringing him into the conversation. “We just want what is best for you.”

Magnus sighs. “I know. I’m just nervous. He’s perfect. But you’re right. I know nothing about him. I’m doing it again aren’t I? Jumping ahead of myself. Being too much!”

Catarina smiles sweetly at him. “You are being the Magnus that we love, and we are looking out for you, like family should do.”

Magnus rolls his eyes. “Okay, okay…now have you decided on the colour, Cat?”

Dear Reader, imagine Alec’s reaction when he arrives at Magnus’s office and is met by a committee of two friendly but slightly intimidating (Ragnor more so than Catarina) people, who then join him and Magnus for lunch and pose a hundred questions! I can reassure you that Alec took it completely in his stride, impressing everyone and becoming part of the family by the end of lunch. Ragnor even made the comment that Alec seemed like he was worth fighting for. High praise from Magnus’s sceptical friend.

I will leave you, for now, with the image of three very good friends who have created their own kind of family, enjoying an evening drink together and listening to Magnus waxing poetically about his love’s pretty hazel eyes.

Notes:

I’m hoping there will be more to come but it will depend on the prompts and we get them each day so I can’t look ahead or plan! Fingers crossed! 😅💜💜

Chapter 3: First kiss

Summary:

For the Malec Discord Live Writing Prompt Pride Month Event - Day 5 : First kiss

It’s what it says on the box!

Chapter Text

It took far too long in Alec’s opinion (and Magnus’s too, for sure), dear Reader, to set up their next date. Alec wasn’t sure if the first one even really counted, with Magnus’s family there to vet him. The evening went so well, however, he’s prepared to count it as a ‘first date with chaperones’ and move on.

Dear Reader, have you ever experienced those first heady days of attraction, where all you can think about is that person? Where every breath feels like too much, every sound reminds you of their voice, and you see them in every person that passes by.

Alec has it bad, that much I can tell you. Impossible to sleep well, eating seems like something unnecessary and working is a nightmare. His attention span is up the creek, floating in the reeds somewhere. He tries to concentrate on paperwork and all he sees are Magnus’s eyes and Magnus’s smile. It’s a really tricky time for our dear Alec, who survives through sheer muscle memory (or the brain equivalent) alone. Lydia, who he works closest with, covers for him where she can. It’s trying times, but finally a date is set. I’m sure, dear Reader, you can imagine Alec’s elation.

We’ll skip over all the preparation and the hours spent trying on different outfits for both men, and we’ll get straight to the date. Enough talk already, let’s get some action.

Alec and Magnus have already eaten and are currently trying to decide if they should share a dessert or go for a walk and buy an ice cream. The date has been great so far, dear Reader, but I promised you action and so far, very little, apart from some sweet smiles, a bit of hand holding and some blushing on Alec’s part, has taken place. But I sense things are going to change, because a decision has been made - they are going for a walk and ice cream.

“You paid last time, this one is on me, I asked you on this date,” Alec says firmly, and Magnus would be a liar if he didn’t admit he rather likes an authoritative Alec.

He nods his head and lets Alec pay for the dinner, a small smile flitting across his face.

They make their way outside and start walking towards the ice cream parlour that Alec had found on his app. Alec’s arm brushes Magnus’s and he feels a thrill run through his body. Magnus glances across at him and suddenly Alec feels brave. He moves his hand to grasp hold of Magnus’s, looking over at him as he does it. Magnus takes his hand, fingers entwining, a small smile decorating his face. Alec can’t quite believe how lucky he is. This beautiful man wants to step out with him? Be seen with him? Holding hands!

The rest of the way to the parlour they talk about books and terrible movies they’ve seen. It’s easy and it’s fun, and Alec is hyper aware the whole time of Magnus’s hand in his. He can feel the warmth of his palm and the metal of his rings and he wants this moment to last forever. Of course, it doesn’t. They arrive at the parlour and take a seat outside since it’s a balmy evening and it feels too bright inside for their burgeoning romance.

Magnus gets a fruity sorbet mix, making a joke about it that makes Alec feel a little hot and bothered. Alec goes for coffee, chocolate and vanilla, which makes Magnus raise an eyebrow and Alec glare at him. It feels as if they have known each other for years, not days.

“You’ve got sorbet on your cheek,” Alec says, pointing with his spoon.

“Oh!” Magnus tries to wipe it off but just smears it more.

“Here, I’ll do it for you,” Alec says, taking a clean napkin and leaning in to wipe away the offending sticky smear. He’s caught there, looking at Magnus’s cheek, then down to his lips, then back. Magnus turns his head slightly and now he’s looking at Magnus, and his breath catches in his throat. He can count his eyelashes, see where the kohl is starting to run a bit, see that his pupils have gotten wider, the brown almost hidden by the black.

Magnus nods at him, almost imperceptibly, but Alec is so close, paying attention to the minutiae, that he can’t miss it. It feels thrilling, this moment before. Time suspended on a tightrope of desire.

He moves another inch and their lips touch. The feeling sends a shiver down his spine. This first kiss is sweet like the ice cream he can taste on their tongues. It’s like arriving at a place that seems familiar even though you have never been there. It’s warm, despite the cool of the sorbet, and the heat goes right down to Alec’s toes. Magnus is a great kisser, Alec never doubted that, and he leads Alec in a dance of lips and tongues that is intoxicating. There are hands moving to waists, and necks, and shoulders, and pulling gently on hair. Alec’s brain has gone off-line, his only thoughts are of Magnus, of wanting to be closer, for this to never end.

Once they pull apart, a gentle release of lips, on a soft sigh, Alec opens his eyes that he hadn’t even realised he’d closed, and looks into Magnus’s. He sees something there that resembles forever, and starts to smile. There is no fear, no worry that they are moving too fast. This feels right, like he’s been waiting so many lifetimes to be with this man. Magnus smiles back, leaning forwards to chase Alec’s lips. And what can Alec do but respond in kind.

A first kiss, dear Reader, between Alec and Magnus, that will lead to many more as I’m sure you will have guessed. Let’s leave them a bit of privacy as they continue to slowly discover one another. I’m sure we’ll meet them again.

Chapter 4: Glitter

Summary:

For the Malec Discord Live Writing Prompt Pride Month Event - Day 10 : Glitter

Magnus and Alec prepare for their first Pride together.

******

Chapter Text

We are back, dear Reader, to join our two favourite men as they prepare to go to their first Pride together. For Magnus it is his seventh, but for Alec it is his first. He never had anyone to go with before, and now he has Magnus. Rumour has it that Magnus is trying to get Alec to step out of his comfort zone. Let’s see where that takes him.

“This one would look amazing on you!” Magnus exclaims, holding up an orange crop top with the words ‘unicorns unite’ in fluorescent green.

Alec glares at him, and Magnus grins back, flouncing away to replace the top with another one. This one is white with black sleeves, the front filled with the word ‘gay’ with a rainbow over it.

Alec considers it for a moment. “Too obvious!” he grimaces, returning to the rack. He pulls out a black t-shirt with the word ‘Pride’ in rainbow colours across the chest.

“I like this one,” he says, turning to Magnus who is looking at another rack.

“Hmm,” Magnus murmurs, contemplating the top. “Definitely you. But where’s the glitter, Alexander? The pazaz!”

Alec raises an eyebrow, his free hand waving down the length of his body.

Magnus looks at him and winks. “Okay, darling. You do you, and I’ll do me!”

“And you are going to look stunning, I’m sure,” Alec replies leaning in to kiss his boyfriend.

“Thank you, darling,” Magnus replies with a smirk. “I can’t help being magnificent!”

Alec rolls his eyes, but he has a very sappy look on his face.

Our men are very much in love, and getting to know each other. How cute is that, dear Reader? Let’s skip a few days and turn up on the morning of Pride as Alec goes to pick up Magnus from his apartment.

“Wow!” Alec says, when Magnus opens the door. “You look very…”

“Beautiful, colourful, gorgeous…?” Magnus answers, when Alec is clearly lost for words.

“Sexy,” Alec says, his eyes wide as he takes in his boyfriend. Magnus is wearing glowing pink booty shorts, barely covering the top of his thighs, a golden mesh crop top, blue highlights in his hair and glitter everywhere. The purple cowboy boots have a two inch heel, and Alec is seriously concerned that his boyfriend is going to twist an ankle. He won’t say anything because he doesn’t want to spoil the mood, but he’ll stick by his side all day and make sure he’s fine.

Magnus tilts his hips, then does a little twirl. “You never cease to surprise me, Alexander,” he says with a smirk. “Sadly, we have a rendez-vous with Simon, Maia and Clary, or I would be down to exploring where ‘sexy’ might go.”

Alec blushes, but continues to look at Magnus admiringly. Magnus’s gaze goes up and down Alec, too. “Mmm, I do love a bit of colour on you, darling. My pretty boy.”

Alec blushes even deeper, stepping forward to pull Magnus into a fierce kiss, his hands moving down to draw their hips together. Magnus moans into the kiss, only pulling back when he feels things getting a little out of hand for the outfit he is in.

“Time out!” he says, breathlessly. He puts his hands on Alec’s cheeks, brushing his thumb across them.

“Can I put a tiny bit of glitter on your cheeks?” he asks, quickly adding, “I get it if you don’t want to. Just wanted to push my luck!”

Alec smiles at him adoringly. “You really want this don't you?”

Magnus smiles gently. “I would love you to have a day where you can share a bit of glitter with me, but I never want you to feel uncomfortable.”

Alec kisses him again, slow and soft this time.

“Go on,” he says, loving the grin that creeps slowly onto Magnus’s face.

Dear Reader, you can imagine that perhaps there was more than just ‘a bit of glitter’, and that Alec would have put up with all the glitter in New York just to see the joy emanating from his boyfriend. They certainly had a most enjoyable time in the shower that night getting it all off each other.

Chapter Text

Dear Reader, we left our two favourite men last time, washing off the ‘little bit’ of glitter from their bodies in the shower. But what happened before that you might ask? How did Alec get on at his first Pride? It is my pleasure to open up a window and bring you a snippet of their day so you can see Alec’s reactions to his first Parade.

“Magnus, Alec, over here!”

Magnus looks around and sees his friends standing close to a barrier, at a point where they’ll have a good view of the Parade approaching and going past. He pulls on Alec’s hand and they move together towards Simon, Maia and Clary who are waving excitedly.

Once everyone has said hello and admired each other’s outfits, Simon helps Clary top up her suncream, leaving Maia to chat with Magnus and Alec.

“So, how many compliments did you get for this?” Maia asks, eyes raking up and down Magnus, eyebrows in the air.

“Are you judging me?” Magnus asks, faux-shocked. Maia thumps him on the arm, trying to hide a smile.

“So many!” Alec replies proudly, wrapping an arm around Magnus’s waist and giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.

Maia rolls her eyes. “You too are disgustingly in love, but you’re in the right place today!”

Magnus opens his mouth to reply but is interrupted by Clary and Simon’s shout “They’re coming!”

Everyone crowds against the barrier, trying to get the best view. It’s a large Parade, with floats and carriages, hundreds of people walking, throwing glitter and confetti, music blaring, bodies gyrating, flags waving and water spraying.

About twenty minutes in, the Parade stops briefly, just as Beyoncé’s Texas Hold ‘Em starts playing loudly next to them. Alec watches, eyes wide, as a group with cowboy hats on their heads starts dancing. In a second, Magnus, Clary and Maia are joining in, stomping and turning and shouting out the lyrics. Alec’s eyes can’t leave Magnus, he’s mesmerised by the sight of his boyfriend, and the happiness that shines in his eyes.

The Parade restarts all too soon, the dancers and the music leaving before the song ends, new music and new groups of people replacing them. Alec takes it all in with big eyes, standing close to Magnus, arms around each other.

“What do you think?” Magnus asks, as the Parade starts to come to an end.

“I loved it,” Alec answers, a big smile on his face. “Everyone expressing themselves, the feeling of community. I…I’ve never had this before.”

Magnus smiles at him lovingly, pulling him in for a soft, slow kiss. “How about we go check out the village. I think you’ll love that too.”

“Hmm,” Alec nods, capturing Magnus’s mouth again, tasting the sweet cherry chapstick on his lips.

They pull back, eyes still glued to each other. “Did you have a favourite part?” Magnus asks, curious.

Alec thinks for a few moments. “You,” he replies, simply.

Magnus can’t help but kiss him again.

Chapter 6: Proposal

Summary:

Chapter Text

There are rumours, dear reader, circulating amongst those who know him best, that Magnus might be about to take the big step. But how? you might ask, can he propose when they haven’t even said I love you yet? Dear reader, are you forgetting how fast they fell? How immediately they felt at ease with one another? I see that I need to take you into their lives again. Then you’ll understand.

It’s been two weeks, and Magnus is sure that Alec is the one. Alec barely lives in his own apartment anymore, just going there to bring a few more things over to Magnus’s. He has the bigger, lighter space, so it’s not surprising from an aesthetic point of view. He supposes his friends would tell him he’s moving too fast if he were to ask their opinion, but it just feels so right. He and Alec, in perfect sync.

It was yesterday that the realisation came of how much he loves him. They had just had fun cooking supper together, laughing and working in unison in a way that seemed so natural, a thing normally set in years of cooperation. They were on the couch, watching a movie that Alec had never seen, too many of those to count. Magnus spent most of his time watching him, seeing his eyes light up, seeing him frown then smile, watching his nose scrunch and his eyes crinkle, and he was hit by a tidal wave of longing. A realisation that he wanted these soft moments forever, that this was love, an everlasting love. His body ached with the need to share it with Alec.

“Alec,” he said softly, pulling his lover’s gaze away from the screen. When Alec’s eyes landed on him, he saw the softness in them and he knew.

“I love you,” he murmured, holding his boyfriend’s eyes.

He watched as Alec’s eyes widened and then softened again. “I love you too,” Alec replied. “A crazy amount.”

What could Magnus do but pull him into a gentle kiss that turned quickly into something more passionate. That was the end of film night.

This morning, waking up in Alec’s arms, he thinks about a ring. What shall he get him? Nothing too flash, Alec likes simplicity. But Alec is worth showing off, so it needs to be something elegant, something that catches the eye and says this person is important.

Alec wakes up slowly, as is his wont. He stretches, kissing Magnus before he rolls away. “Pee,” he grumbles unnecessarily, it’s a morning routine that Magnus is used to now.

When Alec comes back in, he opens the bedside cabinet drawer, then closes it, before climbing back into bed. He leans in to give Magnus another kiss. This one is minty fresh, not that Magnus cares, he hasn’t got up to brush his own teeth yet.

“I love you so much,” Alec whispers, running a hand along Magnus’s jaw line and tracing a finger across his lips. He shifts slightly, moving his other hand into view. He opens his hand. “Marry me?” he says softly, gazing into Magnus’s eyes.

Magnus looks at Alec’s hand, a gold ring with a large L in the middle. His eyes widen as it sinks in. Alec has beaten him to it! He starts to smile, and then a giggle escapes his lips. Alec looks at him a little confused, which Magnus can’t have.

“Yes, yes,” he exclaims, pulling Alec into a fervent kiss.

“I can’t believe you got there first,” he says when he has his breath back. “I was lying here planning what ring to buy you,” he continues, laughter lacing his voice.

Alec grins. “You can still get me one. I’d like that.”

Magnus grins back, feeling like his body is filled with helium, carrying him up into the stars. He now has a fiancé. Alexander Lightwood is his fiancé, and he can’t wait to plan the most amazing wedding ever.

And so dear Reader, true love runs its course and it turns out that the rumours weren’t quite correct. Alec Lightwood surprised us all. Or did he? I leave it up to you to decide.

Chapter Text

It’s been a whirlwind two weeks and three days, from our two lovely men meeting in an elevator, to becoming fiancés. Had you noticed, dear Reader, that we haven’t seen or heard much of Alec’s family? It’s not for want of trying, I can assure you. But he wanted Izzy and Jace together, and someone kept having some important thing that put them off meeting Magnus.

Finally, dear Reader, today is the day. So let’s find out how it goes.

“I’ve got snacks, suncream, beach towels, our bathers, a cooler full of water and fruit, a parasol…” Magnus stops, pursing his lips as he thinks.

Alec comes up to him, hugging him from behind and placing a kiss on the side of his neck, sending shivers running down Magnus’s spine.

“It’s gonna be fine, sweetheart. They are gonna love you.”

Magnus sighs, turning in Alec’s arms. “And I’ll be by your side,” he finishes, pressing his lips to Magnus’s. They lose themselves for a few minutes, until Magnus reluctantly pulls back.

“Okay, let’s go meet Izzy and Jace.”

The beach is not too crowded seeing as it’s a week day. Alec and Magnus arrive first, setting up a spot for everyone. Then Jace and Izzy turn up in a flurry of greetings and apologies for not meeting Magnus earlier.

They eventually settle down, chatting about their lives and comparing the things they get up to, going for a swim, playing a bit of beach volleyball, and digging into the snacks and drinks that Magnus had prepared.

“We’ve got something to tell you,” Alec says, looking over to his sister from his position on the beach towel, head on Magnus’s stomach.

Izzy’s eyes widen. “I’m all ears, hermano.”

Alec looks at Jace who nods, his blonde hair falling into his eyes.

“We are engaged,” Alec announces, taking Magnus’s hand and showing off the Lightwood ring.

“Oh my God,” Izzy squeals, getting up and shifting over to have a closer look at the ring. “It looks great on you, Magnus.” She looks up at Alec. “Have you got one too?”

“Not yet,” Alec replies. “We’re gonna go looking together soon.”

“Congratulations, bro, Magnus,” Jace says, lifting his sunglasses to smile at them both.

“Yes, congratulations,” Izzy exclaims. “When is the wedding?”

“Woah, slow down,” Alec returns laughing.

“Slow down?” Izzy answers, teasingly. “From the man who got engaged two weeks after meeting his fiancé?”

Alec laughs again. “Two weeks and one day,” he replies, looking lovingly at Magnus.

“Ugh,” Jace groans. “You two are stupidly in love.”

“You’re just jealous,” Izzy says. “I think they’re sweet.”

“Talking of sweet,” Magnus says. “No beach day is complete without an ice cream.”

“Oh, yes!” Jace says gleefully. “I’m in total agreement. Let’s go brother-in-law-to-be!”

As they walk off, Izzy turns to Alec. “I like him,” she says smiling. Alec smiles in return, glad that his siblings are onboard.

And so you see, dear Reader, there really was no need for Magnus to worry, afterall.

Chapter Text

CW:// homophobia (in a brief reaction from Maryse)

Dear Reader, we left our two men yesterday, enjoying a beach day with two of Alec’s siblings. It was a lighthearted day, in preparation for today. This evening in fact. An evening that is going to be marked in the Lighthouse lore.

Perhaps you’ll recall that the love that Alec has found was a love he never expected because our darling Alec was deep in the closet, to his parents at least. A closet barricaded by loyalty to their wishes, to their beliefs, and their ambitions for their children, their eldest son in particular.

It took the flamboyant, kind and big-hearted Magnus all of thirty seconds to smash through that fortified closet door. And when Alec pushed aside the splinters, and walked into the light, there was no turning back. Magnus held out his hand and life in all its glorious colours beckoned to him. Who wants to live in the dark once they have discovered the light? Certainly not Alec!

Telling his sister, Isabelle, about Magnus was not hard. She knew he was gay and she was, in Alec’s opinion, unproportionally over enthusiastic about his new relationship. But we can sympathise, dear Reader, can we not? What sibling who loves their brother, would not want to decorate his room in rainbow flags and bake rainbow cupcakes with rainbow sprinkles and scatter red and pink heart cushions all over his bed?

Telling Max, his younger brother, was a little daunting. Would Max be cool about it or would he be disgusted, following his parents’ line? Isabelle told him to stop being an idiot, as all younger sisters are wont to do, and to have more faith in their brother. She was right of course. Max was so cool, that Alec had to check with him that he had truly understood the situation.

“Of course I know what gay means!” had been Max’s reply to Alec’s desire for confirmation. “But no details, please. I’m only 14! And can you shut the door, I’m trying to reach level 23 and you’re distracting me.”

You can see where we are heading, can you not, dear Reader? Yes! You are quite right! Towards the parents!

Alec and Magnus talked about this a lot. Well, Alec talked about it and Magnus listened. Little by little a plan was formed. A formal ‘coming out’ was out of the question. Too much pressure. It would be done ‘informally’ and publically. No chance for his parents to make a scene, washing their dirty laundry in public was not a Lightwood trait. Alec was about to test it’s validity.

Let’s take a look at how that went, shall we?

“Are you going to wear that other necklace too? And I like that gold embroidery. Perhaps I should change my trousers. Where did I put my watch?”

Magnus watches as Alec paces around his bedroom, looking for the missing watch. When he walks past him, he puts out a hand and stops him in his tracks. Pulling his fiancé towards him, he speaks with a gentle voice.

“Alexander, we both look amazing. Your watch is probably on the dresser. I will be stuck to your side like glue all evening. And if you change your mind, then that’s fine. No pressure, sweetheart. The decision is in your hands.”

Alec stops and stares at his gorgeous partner. He will never stop pinching himself that he has the love of, and the joy of being in love with, Magnus Bane. A man whose intelligence shines in his eyes, whose kindness appears in every gesture and whose beauty goes deep into his very soul. He leans forwards, capturing Magnus’s lips, the kiss, soft and sweet, being returned in full.

“I love you so much,” he murmurs, foreheads touching and hands circling waists and necks.

“I love you too, my darling,” Magnus replies, unable to stop a smile from forming on his lips. Alec has brought love back into his life and he feels as though he is filled with happiness the whole time. He cannot imagine a life without him in it. He wants this evening to go well, for Alec to receive the support he deserves.

“Now let’s get our shoes and coats on and go and make some waves,” Magnus continues. Alec smiles, he loves this man so much, and gives Magnus another soft, but quick kiss. Then, grabbing his hand, he leads them out of the bedroom.

The venue is huge. A massive hall with Roman columns and frescos and huge chandeliers. It is decorated with large, flowing, white drapes and gold stars. Magnus has seen better but it’s not terrible. It’s preferable to the pea green that Ragnor insisted on for his last birthday bash. Magnus had a headache for days afterwards.

Magnus follows Alec through the masses of finely dressed people until they reach his parents.

“Ah, Alec, you made it at last,” his mother says, leaning in for an air kiss and barely looking at Alec. She totally ignores Magnus. “I’ve been waiting to introduce you to Lydia. She’s looking forward to meeting you. Such a nice girl. Good connections—,”

“Mom,” Alec interrupts her flow. “I’ve been wanting to introduce you to Magnus.” He turns to Magnus. “Magnus, my mom, Maryse, and,” he turns to his father, who is watching him with wary eyes, “my father, Robert. Mom, dad, this is Magnus Bane. He’s an incredible designer, I’m sure you’ve heard of him.”

Maryse looks at Magnus, her face twisting in light disgust before she masks it behind a polite veneer.

“The name rings a bell,” she replies, exuding faux-boredom.

Before either man can reply, a whirlwind, in the form of Isabelle Lightwood, rushes up to them.

“Magnus, Alec, you made it. Wonderful!” she cries, hugging first Magnus and then Alec. “Come, the dancing has started and I require partners, pronto.” She grabs both their hands and pulls them with her towards a large area on the other side of the room.

Magnus turns and winks at Alec. Phase one done. Phase two about to start. Alec smiles tentatively back. He wants to do this. It’s his idea. It’s just a big step and needs some courage to be executed.

In the end, it doesn’t need courage at all. All it needs is the safety of Magnus’s arms and the feeling of love that they share. The world slows down around them, the music fades to the background, the people around them disappear from Alec’s notice and it happens totally naturally. A spontaneous kiss that goes on and on, until they are both struggling for breath, chests heaving as they pull apart, arms tight around each other.

The world comes slowly back into focus as Alec refinds his breath. He feels a nudge against his side and looks down to see Isabelle grinning at him.

“It worked. They saw. Dad went red and mom looked like she was catching flies. Great job, guys,” she exclaims, before darting away again into the crowd.

Several hours, and many kisses later, his parents manage to catch him alone as he makes his way to the men’s restroom.

“What are you doing, Alexander?” his mother asks in a confrontational tone.

“I’m going to the men’s room,” Alec replies, deliberately being obtuse.

“You know what I mean, Alec,” Maryse snaps back.

Alec looks at her and nods. He’s had enough. “I love Magnus and he loves me. We are boyfriends. Either you deal with that or you lose your eldest son. It’s up to you,” he finishes, leaving her standing.

When he comes out, his father is waiting for him. His mother is nowhere in sight. Alec looks at him, cocking an eyebrow.

“I’m…you know that was quite a surprise, Alec. I’m glad you’re happy. Your mother just needs a bit more time. She’ll come around.”

Alec purses his lips, but nods. Perhaps. He hopes so. He loves his parents, even with all their faults.

His father looks at him a few seconds longer. “Don't be a stranger,” he says, then turns and walks away.

“Works both ways,” Alec mutters to himself, watching his father’s retreating back. He’s about to return to find Magnus when he sees him approaching. Magnus watches him carefully before coming up and wrapping him in a big hug.

“I’m proud of you,” he murmurs. “And I love you a ridiculous amount.”

Alec smiles. “I love you so so much, Magnus Bane.”

They stand there for a few more minutes, wrapped up in each other, ignoring the world around them, before heading back into the big hall.

Chapter Text

We left our two men enjoying a dance at the gala but when Alec went into work the next day, what, dear Reader, would be Maryse’s attitude towards him and the revelation of the previous evening? Let’s go to Alec’s office and find out.

Alec is sitting at his desk, looking through some case notes, trying hard not to think about Maryse’s words, harsh words that she threw at him only minutes ago, when Jace saunters in.

“So, how did it go?” he asks, sitting on the edge of Alec’s desk, and immediately moving things around.

Alec glares at him, putting out a hand to move his photo of Magnus back into place. “Word spreads fast,” he replies, dryly.

“Not enough words though, which is why I'm here,” Jace says calmly.

Alec sighs, knowing he can’t get past his brother. “She gave me an ultimatum.”

“She what?” Jace says indignantly.

“Break up with Magnus or be out of a job with no references,” Alec replies matter of factly, his face a mask.

Jace studies him for a long moment.

“Right,” he says, firmly, keeping his anger in check. “Enough is enough. Come with me.”

Alec frowns, but he trusts Jace with his life, so he gets up, following him down the hall. “What’s the plan?” he asks, knowing that Jace is up to something.

“I’m not going to let Maryse get away with this. You are the bedrock of this firm. I know you don’t realise it, but people look up to you, not your parents. It’s time to show our solidarity.”

Alec stops, surprise on his face. When Jace realises he’s not behind him anymore, he turns, his voice impatient. “Is it so hard to believe? You are a great manager and a brilliant lawyer, Alec. Now come on, before Maryse hides away in another meeting.”

Jace strides on, Alec trailing behind.

Jace knocks on Maryse’s door then enters immediately.

“Maryse, good morning!” he starts. Then, not waiting for a reply, he continues, “Your homophobic attitude is totally displaced and inappropriate. Your employees are all prepared to go on strike in solidarity with Alec if you go down the path you have started tracing. You have until the end of today to reverse your decision, or we will take action.”

Alec watches as Maryse, her face a blank page, allows her eyes to flash briefly before closing them. When she opens them, she looks directly at Jace, avoiding Alec.

“Are you threatening me, Jace?”

Jace looks back at her, his eyes steady. “No, I'm giving you an ultimatum.”

Maryse opens her mouth and then closes it.

Jace nods at her then turns, putting a hand on Alec’s back and practically shoving him out the door.

“…and then I got a curt memo from her saying that my position was not in question and that the firm would be revising their anti-discrimination policy,” Alec says, his head resting on Magnus’s lap where they are installed on the couch together.

“Well, I have to hand it to blondie, he really has your back.”

“Yeah,” Alec replies softly. “It was me and him, oh and Izzy, making up our own little team, for years. I should have expected him to do something like that.”

Magnus runs a hand through Alec’s hair. “I’m glad you’ve got such great siblings.”

Alec smiles. “And now I’ve got you, too.”

Magnus smiles back, leaning down towards Alec. “As I have you,” he murmurs. “I love you so much, Alexander.”

“I love you too,” Alec replies, reaching up and pulling Magnus into a gentle, sweet kiss.

Chapter Text

Dear Reader, have you heard the latest in the Malec saga? No one can believe that they are moving so fast but we are talking about two men deeply in love and not wanting to waste any more time. Let’s see what drama they are going to create today.

Magnus wakes up the next morning, Alec still snoring gently by his side, and it hits him again. He is engaged to be married to this incredible man. It’s been a whirlwind romance, and Magnus still has to pinch himself at times to remind himself that it’s real. But then, he just has to look at Alec and remember the way they just click, the feeling of freedom but also safety he has, and the continual buzzing feeling, the anticipation, the heat that rises, the butterflies that flutter and the need to be near Alec as much as possible.

Alec shifts slightly, mumbling something incoherent and Magnus feels like his heart might burst out of his chest, so gigantic does his love feel for his fiancé. His fiancé. The man he is going to marry. The first person he has ever wanted to marry. It brings a smile to his lips, and he feels slightly loopy with happiness.

Alec stirs again, opening his eyes sleepily, immediately searching for Magnus. The moment they land on him, he starts to smile. The smile that Magnus already has, gets wider. Alec leans in for a kiss that Magnus returns willingly. It’s a lot of teeth and slightly awkward until they stop smiling. The kiss turns heated for a while then morphs back into sweet and gentle. They both pull back at the same time, so in sync, so attuned to the other.

“Marry me,” Magnus blurts out, his heart in his eyes.

Alec looks at him lovingly, reading him perfectly. “The courthouse opens at 9am.”

Magnus leans in for another kiss, unable to believe that this man, the man he loves with every cell in his body and every synapse in his brain, is truly real. Tasting him, touching him, brings it all into reality.

They make a few quick calls. The first one to get an appointment. The next few to family, Magnus not wanting Ragnor or Catarina to miss out and Alec likewise contacting Jace and Izzy. Izzy will bring Max along.

The rest of the day is spent playing hooky (Alec calls in sick and Magnus is his own boss). They go into Magnus’s work and raid his cupboards for wedding outfits. They are not quite tuxes but the originality and the perfect cut makes them look a million dollars.

They meet everyone outside the courthouse ten minutes before their appointment.

Izzy pulls Alec to one side. “Two weeks and three days, Alec!” she whispers urgently. “Are you sure this is what you want? He’s a lovely man but you barely know each other.”

Alec gives her a big hug. “I love that you are looking out for me, Iz. But I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life,” he says, his voice very serious.

Izzy pulls back, studying him for a moment. “In that case,” she says with a big smile, “what are we waiting for?”

The wedding is very simple. A marriage full of love, witnessed by the people they love. Alec says his vows and has Magnus in tears within a few words. Magnus’s vows are longer but just as sincere and nobody has a dry eye by the end. Catarina hands out tissues, and they all have a big group hug on the steps as they leave the courthouse.

Before getting into their car to head to the restaurant they have booked for the wedding supper, Magnus takes hold of Alec’s left hand, playing with his ring.

“Husbands,’ he says smiling.

“Sounds right,” Alec replies with a grin.

“I love you more than I can put into words.”

“I love you more than there are words.”

They share their second kiss as husbands, before getting in the car and making their way to the start of the rest of their lives together.

Chapter Text

Dear Reader, six days have passed since our favourite couple tied the knot in the presence of their close families. They surely had no time to arrange a honeymoon, yet rumour has it that they have left New York and are sejourning somewhere in the South. Perhaps we can join them and find out the truth.

Magnus has a margherita in one hand and his husband's hand in the other. He is lying on a sun lounger by the pool of the private villa in the Florida Keys. A villa owned by a friend of his who had given him and Alec two weeks rent free as a wedding gift. The sun is beating down, but they are protected by a fancy straw roofed pergola which has enough overhang to be a perfect place for his husband who turns pink at the slightest whiff of sun.

His husband. Magnus can’t stop saying that to himself. Six days after their wedding and one day into their honeymoon, Magnus still catches himself with the wonder of it all. He has never felt so loved, so cared for, so understood in all his life. The happiness that it brings seeps into his body, filling him with joy right down to molecular level. He smiles so much his jaw aches, but in a good way, a way that makes him want to keep smiling for the rest of his life.

He looks across at his husband, lying next to him, a book in his other hand. He has to release his hand now and then to allow Alec to turn a page, but they always unerringly find each other's hands again. And that feels symbolic of their relationship. From day one they have unerringly found each other, seen each other and matched each other in every way.

As if to confirm Magnus’s thoughts, Alec seems to sense Magnus’s gaze on him and turns his head. The smile he gives Magnus melts him more than the heat of the day is currently doing. It’s a smile that beats the sunshine hands down. A smile so full of love that Magnus feels it like a warm blanket that wraps around him.

“Are you enjoying yourself, darling?” he asks, wanting his husband to experience the best holiday ever.

Alec’s smile gets impossibly wider. “Anywhere with you is perfect,” he answers, and Magnus almost tears up from the sincerity in Alec’s voice.

“There are moments when I can’t believe I have this,” Magnus replies, “I never thought I’d find love again.”

Alec puts his book down and pushes himself up into a sitting position with his now free hand. The other is still clasped in Magnus’s. Then in one swift movement, he rotates himself onto Magnus’s lap.

Magnus places his drink on the side table, putting his hand onto Alec’s hip. Alec leans forwards and starts peppering soft kisses over Magnus’s face, his neck and his chest.

“Meeting you ,” he says in between kisses, “is the best thing that ever happened to me. Being with you is the best thing ever. You bring me so much joy that I sometimes feel like I’m going to explode with happiness. I love you so much that it feels as though there is no end, no limit. The thought of spending the rest of my life with you fills me with an immense joy, impossible to describe.”

Tears fill Magnus’s eyes. How can he respond to that. It’s all he ever wanted to hear. It’s all he needs to hear. He pulls on Alec’s hand, bringing his other one to guide Alec’s head up into a kiss full of all the love, the happiness and the closeness that he feels. With Alec in his arms he is certain that he knows the real meaning of joy.

Chapter Text

Dear Reader, it’s impossible to leave these two men alone for very long. There is something about them and their story that is very compelling. Love at first sight belongs to fairy tales and romantic fiction, not real life! Yet here we are, a true romance, a love story for the ages. Let’s have a last look at our two favourite lovers being domestic together.

Magnus has wanted to take Alec out every night, wine and dine him and show him how much he is treasured. They really didn’t have much time to woo each other before the wedding, it had been a whirlwind romance. So dating had been minimal. But now, on their honeymoon, Magnus has the opportunity to show Alec really how special he is. So they have been going out every evening, trying out new places, walking along the Keys and enjoying each other's company.

This evening, their fourth one of their honeymoon, Alec wants to stay in. So they do. Magnus will do anything for his husband. Even wrestle one of those gators they’ve seen while out and about. They look pretty nasty, with huge teeth, but Magnus is in love and love wins all battles in his book.

So, here they are, in their rental kitchen, making dinner together for the first time. It’s kinda surreal, because they just seem to work together so well. Not that Magnus is surprised by that, but still.

“Do you ever stop to think about what’s happened between us?” Magnus asks, handing over the salt, that Alec was just about to reach for.

Alec stops a second, a thoughtful look in his eyes. “We’ve come a long way in a short time, haven’t we?”

Magnus nods, suddenly unable to talk, the emotion catching him by surprise.

Alec instantly puts down the salt, turning to Magnus and pulling him into a hug. He doesn’t say anything for a few moments, and Magnus is so thankful, so grateful that he has met and fallen in love with, and had his love returned by the best, kindest, most thoughtful and attentive man in the world. He has no words to explain the emotions he is feeling. The happiness that fills him in this moment. Yes, they have come a long way in such a short time, but it’s perfect, and he never wants it to end.

Alec holds him until Magnus himself choses to take a step back.

“Is there anything I can do?” Alec asks, almost making Magnus want to cry with how protected and loved he feels.

He shakes his head, trying to smile. “I love you so much that there are moments when it feels like my heart will burst from all the feelings it holds,” he says softly, one hand coming up to hold Alec’s cheek. “You make me so incredibly happy, my darling.”

Alec’s smile is soft and sweet in return. “You are more than I ever dreamed of, my love. I love you more and more each moment of every day.” A single tear falls from Magnus’s eye and Alec wipes it away with a kiss to his cheek. “Loving you is the best thing that ever happened to me, and I will spend the rest of our lives together showing you the truth of that,” he finishes, moving his lips in soft kisses across Magnus’s face until he reaches his lips. The kiss is sweet and slow, full of promises and love. They may have come a long way in a really short time, but it was their way, and most definitely the perfect way.
