Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Uatu sat in his observation room, bored.

For once, there was nothing significant happening, and he didn't really have any desire to watch other realities either.

…But there was still something — or rather, someone — he couldn't get out of his mind: his lovely wife, Ulana.

She was resting in bed, recovering from some sickness she recently had.

He decided to telepathically communicate with her to see if she needed anything.

“My beloved, do you need anything at the moment, I apologize if I’m interrupting your slumber.”

He soon got a reply back.

“You aren’t interrupting anything, do not worry! I am still not feeling quite well but you should probably go back to your observat-“

She was interrupted by Uatu teleporting to their room.

“I apologize once again, in case I have startled you. What's wrong, my dearest?”

“I told you not to worry, love of mine, but I appreciate your concern. It's… Our child. I believe they could come into existence at any given moment, now… Although I can't exactly predict when.”

Uatu’s eyes widened and he reached to grab his wife’s hand. “I shall be with you every minute, don’t fret, I’ve been studying this for a while now and I think I know what to do.” He used his other hand to caress Ulana’s stomach.

“I promise I'll be here for you and our little one…” he said quietly, before going to lay down on the empty side of the bed.

———-

A few hours went by, and the couple managed to rest peacefully. Eventually, though, Uatu was woken up by his partner, who sat on the bed in shock.

“..Uatu. Wake up, starlight. My water has broken, and we both know what it means, it is almost time for us to meet our beloved child…”

“I’m aware of that, Ulana.” The watcher held his wife’s hand firmly, as the both of them teleported to their own private bathhouse, which had been specially arranged for their infant’s arrival.

Ulana was promptly carried to their giant bathtub, and Uatu sat beside her. “I am here with you, my most loved one. I've been preparing for this day and will do everything in my power to help you as much as I can.”

And so the soon-to-be mother went into labor, with her husband holding her hand for the entirety of the process.

———-

The process was scary, yet, went smoothly, lasting a few hours.

Soon, Ulana was holding a bundled blanket, which crying could be heard coming from it.

Ulana took a long look at the child, memorizing his features and what he inherited from his parents. Before embracing the child.

She tried calming the frightened newborn. “Hush… everything will be okay, my child…” she whispered.

Uatu joined them once he finished cleaning their surroundings, gently embracing his family.

“We warmly welcome you into this world, our little one…” He smiled at his wife, and their eyes met for a brief moment before turning back to their newborn son. “He looks exactly like you, my beloved.”

“Oh, I believe he resembles you the most.”

The couple proceeded to observe the child for minutes to come, studying his lovely features and overall gracefulness.

Soon, the baby began crying again, this time being comforted by father, who promptly took him in his arms and held him close.

“Shh… I’m here now… What is the problem, baby of mine?”

The baby stayed quiet after hearing his voice, before opening his eyes for the first time.

He looked around the room and made eye contact with his father.

“There… It's okay, see? My little one…” Uatu gently rocked his child, who kept staring at him until gradually falling asleep.

Since neither of them wished to wake up their child, the couple sent telepathic messages to each other.

“My dearest, I plan on heading back to our room, as I'm still exhausted from the process…”

“Don’t worry, my other. Get the rest you deserve, I'll join you soon enough.”

Ulana got up and dusted herself off, before planting a kiss on her son’s head and Uatu’s cheek and leaving the bath house.

It was now just Uatu and his son.

He took time looking over his features just as his wife did. She was right, he did look a bit like him.

The baby was pulled closer to him, he slept like an angel.

Uatu was overjoyed, he couldn’t believe his child was finally here!

He soon thought it was time for them to go back to their home and began to walk.

Once he got to their room, he placed the baby down in the crib they purchased for him, and observed him for a few minutes before crawling into bed with his lover.

Ulana felt his presence, and immediately turned to face her husband, slowly reaching for his hands. “Is our child sleeping already?”

“He sure is, and he doesn't seem to mind the crib at all.”

The woman let go a soft smile, relieved, before bringing up an important question regarding her son’s life.

“Do you have any names in mind for him, my beloved?”

“I do! Have you thought of anything yet?”

“Yes… Unir. It derives from a Latin verb that means to unite.”

Uatu grinned at her, delighted — they both had a similar thought process!

“I considered naming our son Unio, the Latin word for Union… But I like your suggestion the most, dear.”

“Thank you… I like how both of our name ideas meant the same thing slightly…”

“Ah, I noticed that too! Well, there was… one name suggestion I thought of, but I’m not quite sure you’d approve…”

“What is it?”

“Uris… it means “to ignite”…”

“Oh, Uatu! I absolutely adore that name!”

“Well I guess that settles what he shall be named…”

“Indeed… Our beloved child, Uris.”

The couple exchanged smiles, before squeezing each other's hand and teleporting to the crib.

“I still cannot believe we’ve been blessed with such a perfect life form, Ulana…”

“Me neither…” She approached the baby with her delicate hand and gently caressed his cheek. “Welcome home, my dear Uris…”

They observed the infant for a while, until he started moving in the crib. It only took a few seconds until soft crying could be heard.

Ulana took the child into her arms, bringing him close to her body. “Shh… Shh… What is the matter, my beloved Uris?”

The baby stopped crying and drifted back to sleep, slowly.

Uatu lovingly caressed his wife's shoulder, as the both of them watched their son’s breathing closely.

He decided that since Uris has already cried 3 times that night, it might be best for him to sleep with them. Reaching inside the crib and gently picking the tiny infant up and cradling him.

The three of them soon crawled into bed, Uris in the middle, snoring softly.

Both Uatu and Ulana spent the following minutes admiring their child. Not only was he lovely, he also reminded them of each other.

“...He's the most perfect child we could have ever asked for.”

“Agreed, dear…”

The parents carefully cuddled their newborn son, keeping him warm and safe at the same time. Uris looked just like an angel!

“Ulana…”

“Yes?”

“I love you and our precious child… You are my universe.”

“Oh, Uatu, I adore both of you as well! And the lovely family we created…”

They glanced at their child again, who was snuggled up in both of their arms. He was sleeping soundly.

They held him close as Ulana planted kisses on both males before nuzzling into her husband and falling asleep.

Uatu was the last one awake, and soon fell asleep with both of his loved ones in his arms.

And he smiled once his eyes were shut.

Chapter Text

Ulana was feeding her baby son as she made herself and her husband a meal.

Uatu was just about to take a break from observing earth, as he’s been doing it all day. Soon, he teleported to where his wife was.

He smiled softly “Ah, my love and my son, it is quite nice to see you both.”

Uris finished his meal and turned to look at his father while still in his mother’s arms, quietly staring at him with curiosity.

The small baby reached his arms out, wanting to be held by his father, and was soon passed to him.

“Greetings, my son. How are you doing today?”

The baby quietly babbled as he grabbed a bit of his father’s robe and began to attempt to eat it.

“Ah-Ah-Ah, Uris, please refrain from doing that again” he pulled him away. The baby frowning is disappointment.

“Oh, Uris!” Ulana approached them, and was handed the baby. She embraced her son closely, rocking him slightly. “What about a nap? You must be tired, my dear child.”

The woman gently smiled at her husband before teleporting to Uris’ room.

They had recently moved him to his own room as they finally made room. Ulana placed him in the crib and planted a kiss on his cheek.

“Rest now, my bright star, I love you…” she whispered before teleporting back to the room Uatu was in.

She sat down at the table and patted the seat next to her. In which her husband sat down and observed the food on the plate.

He picked up the fork and knife and took a small portion of the meal. He savored it for a moment, appreciating all the love his wife had put into it before speaking up.

“Love of mine! It is delicious, as always.”

The pair exchanged smiles, and proceeded to joyfully enjoy the rest of their meal, chatting as they did so.

The conversation was quite interesting. Therefore, once they finished eating, the couple decided to walk to the observation room, rather than using their teleportation powers.

They held hands the entire way, and made a brief stop at Uris’ room.

He slept peacefully, cuddling a stuffed animal Uatu purchased him while visiting earth. It was a “cat” as humans called it.

They left the room smiling as they finally made it to the observation room, which had 1 throne-like chair in front of multiple screens.

They shared the seat. Soon enough, the equipment was turned on and perfectly adjusted to the same universe Uatu had been observing for the past few days.

They held hands as they observed. Soon, Ulana rested her body on her husband’s side.

Uatu planted a kiss on her forehead. They remained quiet for a while, carefully observing the screens as the man caressed his wife's hand with his thumb.

He kept playing with her fingers, lovingly squeezing each one of them until he felt… Something…

An engagement ring.

A shiny, golden ring he gave her a long time ago.

He glanced at the ring, and then at his wife. His mind was instantly flooded with memories tracing back to their youth, as he was reminded of all the beautiful moments he had spent with his wife over the course of years.

“Ulana, have I ever told you how divine you look in the starlight?”

“Of course you have, Uatu, several, several times…”

She smiled softly at him, wrapping her arms around him.

“Have I ever told you how graceful your eyes look when observing, they remind me of the brightest supernovas in the cosmos… how I love you, Uatu…”

They both leaned in for a kiss, it lasted a while before Ulana turned around.

She thought she heard something. And her paranoia set in. Ulana turned to her husband, who was looking at her in concern.

“May I ask if you are alright?”

“I think-“

Before she could speak, they heard a zap and there Uris was, on the floor crying.

Both parents ran to him and Uatu picked him up, holding him tightly.

He’s never teleported, nor used any powers, before!

The baby was still crying, and had trouble opening his eyes. The couple attempted to comfort him, wondering just what could've happened…

…Until Ulana heard an unfamiliar voice speaking to her.

“.......ma ……ma ……..ma ……….mama…….”

Her eyes immediately widened up, in shock. She couldn't believe it! Was her son trying to communicate with her?

Uatu noticed the sudden shift in her face, and gently patted her shoulder. “Ulana, my beloved, what's the matter?”

“He… communicated with me…. I think he’s grasping his powers!”

“How…. Wonderful!!!” Uatu beamed, holding his child closer as he rocked him.

“I’m assuming he’s having a nightmare, allow me to soothe him…” she was then passed the infant, and began to hum a tune. She recognized the song from her childhood, but couldn’t remember the name.

Soon, Uris opened his eyes, still teary, but it was soon wiped away by his mother.

He reached his arms out toward her face, and she responded by letting him grab on to one of her fingers.

Both parents watched as his sorrows eased away and a soft smile formed on his face.

Ulana brought her son closer to her body, giving him a gentle kiss on the cheek before passing the infant to his father, who carefully placed the boy on the chair.

The observation session was resumed, with the baby now safely nestled between his parents.

Uris had his eyes locked to the screen as he watched whatever universe was on. Looking in amazement.

Soon, Uatu and Ulana heard something, and looked down at their son.

He was giggling in delight, patting the seat and squealing. All with a big smile on his face.

Uatu picked him up and observed his joyful son, thinking of what to do.

Uris stared at him for a moment and, all of a sudden, the man was greeted by a voice in his own mind.

“...............da ………………dada …da...”

Uatu was amazed, and finally understood his wife's reaction! The couple exchanged glances before turning back to their child, who couldn't stop smiling even for a second.

Soon, Ulana began to telepathically communicate with her husband.

“I’m so proud that he was able to unlock his powers this early!”

Uatu soon replied “Ah yes, not even I could get it right then, he is a very gifted boy…”

Both watchers were overjoyed by their son's brilliant achievement!

They leaned down in order to get a proper look at him, only to find out the baby was already staring at them.

Uris smiled and giggled at the sight of his parents, his eyes narrowing from happiness.

Both of his parents smiled back, they loved how happy their son was.

“Oh, my beloved child!” Ulana took the child into her arms and leaned against her husband, who pulled them both into a soft embrace. “Your mother and father love you very much…”

The baby squealed more, clapping his hands and laughing, before quieting down a few minutes later.

All of them were smiling, even when both parents fell asleep.

“Ma…….Mama……Da…..Da…..Dada…..” was the last thing they heard before drifting off.

Uatu was still holding his family close, while Ulana let their infant sit in her lap.

Uris giggled softly as he heard them both snore, before turning to nom on his father’s robe once more.

Chapter Text

“Uatu, dear, it will just be for a few hours… My sister is sick and someone needs to stay to watch Uris.” Ulana said, picking a basket of different foods and getting ready to teleport.

“Alright… please don’t be long…” Uatu gave her a kiss on the cheek.

She smiled “I won’t be, don’t worry… make sure to spend plenty of time with Uris!” Was the last thing she said before teleporting.

Uatu stood still for a moment, before walking his way to the kitchen. There he finished eating his delicious meal — on his own, since his lovely wife had just left.

He couldn't stop thinking about her, and even considered sending her a telepathic message.

However, before he was able to do anything, soft crying was heard coming from Uris' room…

Uatu got up immediately, and was warmly greeted by his own child teleporting to the chair right next to him. He wasn't crying anymore — in fact, the boy was quite happy!

”Why, hello there, my boy! It seems it’s just the two of us for a bit! Is there anything in particular you would like to do?”

The baby nodded before covering his eyes expectantly.

Uatu knew wanted to play hide and seek!

He quickly got up and hid and sat in an easy spot, Uris was just a baby after all!

Uatu decided to go first. He brought both hands up to his face, covering his eyes. Before he managed to say anything, though, the man noticed two tiny feet hastily approaching him.

Once Uris got close enough, his father uncovered his eyes, moving both arms towards his son and returning the hug offered by the baby.

“My child… that must be a record! I wasn’t hiding for even a minute!”

Uris just giggled as his father got up and carried him, smiling softly.

They played for a few more rounds, Uris being amazingly good at it!

“Now, Uris, you must be hungry…” Uatu teleported to the kitchen, still holding his son. “What would you like to eat, my dear child?”

Uris didn't answer, he wasn't even hungry!

Therefore, the man decided to open the fridge and get Uris’ everyday food: vegetable mash.

The baby flinched at the very sight of it! He detested vegetables more than anything else. Unfortunately, Ulana always forced him to eat healthy food on every meal.

He whined and fussed as the spoon got closer to his mouth. Before swiping the spoon away and sticking his tongue out.

Uatu was confused: how could one hate the same meal they ate everyday?

He sighed, but then had an idea.

Opening the fridge, he found a bag he hid from his wife with a plain earth cheeseburger — human food was one of his guilty pleasures.

He placed the food in a space blender and made sure it was soft, and then warmed it up slightly, before putting some in a clean spoon and letting his son try some.

Uris took a moment to inspect the spoon. It didn't look like anything he had ever seen before! Its color and smell weren't bad either…

He hesitated for a bit, but eventually tasted the mysterious food his father got him.

His eyes widened immediately and he let out a loud squeal of approval.

The father smiled before feeding him more, the baby clapping his hands as the spoon got closer to his mouth.

Soon, there was no more.

Ulana probably won’t mind, right?

Uatu picked up his baby and burped him before carrying him to his room.

It was one of — if not the biggest room in the home, with a huge playpen and piles of toys.

Uris' eyes lightened up in excitement. He knew exactly what he wanted to do!

Once his father approached the play area — fully covered by blue tatami mats and green toy boxes — the baby promptly pointed at his art table.

Upon being dropped at the desired location, the baby took a blank piece of paper and started working on a gift for his father, as a way to thank him for the exotic, delicious meal.

Uatu sat down on a nearby rocking chair. He couldn't wait to see what his son was drawing, but refused to ruin the surprise either.

Soon, the baby ran up to him, paper in hand.

The man took the paper and couldn’t help but smile at the drawing.

To most people, it would look like colorful scribbles.

To Uatu, it was a cute drawing of him, Ulana, and Uris, all holding hands happily.

“Oh, Uris…” he pulled his baby son into a hug.

“It’s perfect.”

The baby quietly hugged back and giggled softly.

They stood like that for a while, until the giggling was eventually interrupted by an adorable — but loud — yawn.

Uris had a very enjoyable day, and was now exhausted. The boy looked up to his father, who planted a gentle kiss on his cheek before walking over to the crib.

He paced around the baby's bed, rocking his child while serenading him with a lovely, soothing lullaby he had learned from his wife.

The song finally came to an end, and Uris was already fast asleep. Uatu was tired as well, so he decided to carefully place his son in the crib.

He kissed his son on the forehead, shut off the lights and turned on his night light before leaving the room.

Once he stepped into the hallway, he was met with his wife, she had a smirk on her face.

“You sing like an angel~”

“You heard that?”

“I didn’t just hear I smelled the human food you fed him.”

“Ulana, I-“

“How dare you expose him to greasy human food at such a young age!”

“Love of mine, I can explain! I…” Uatu locked eyes with his enraged partner, and was finally reminded of the one thing that could possibly calm her down.

He took her hand and led her to Uris' art table.

Once she got there, Ulana immediately noticed her son’s drawing, and what it was supposed to convey.

She took the paper in her hands and spent a minute or two observing it… It was lovely! A genuine smile formed on her face, as the woman slowly turned to face her husband.

“Our son did this? At this age? How… incredible!”

She hugged her husband “I’m so proud of him…”

“And so am I, dearest… shall we head to the bathhouse and prepare for slumber?”

Ulana grabbed his hand and they both teleported.

Once they arrived at the building, Ulana grabbed two towels — one for herself and another for her husband — while Uatu prepared their bath.

They soon entered the lukewarm, lavender scented water. Ulana explained about her sister’s disease, and how she'd probably require another visit soon enough.

Despite everything, her worries were rapidly eased by her loved one, who told her all about their son's excitement upon tasting a human meal for the first time — which Ulana thought was adorable!

They chatted a bit more until they finished cleaning each other, and left the bath. Drying off and putting on comfortable clothes to rest in. Before teleporting to their bedroom.

Soon, they both laid down on their bed, holding each other and sighing in comfort. Putting the covers over their bodies and nuzzling into the cold pillows.

“Today was wonderful, dear, despite you not being by my side…”

“My other… I'm glad you both had such a delightful day, that is enough to bring me happiness as well!”

The woman smiled gently before another thought came in mind.

“Uatu… maybe someday we can take Uris to earth… if he loves earth food that much, he might like earth itself.”

Uatu thought about it for a moment, it sounded perfect! He planted a kiss on his wife's cheek before returning to his side of the bed.

“You always have the greatest ideas, my beloved! We might do it tomorrow, once our observation duty is finished.”

“That sounds incredible!!! I cannot wait any longer… we must rest now if we want to do this!”

She scooched closer to her lover and wrapped her arms around him, nuzzling into his chest and closing her eyes.

After a couple minutes, they were both asleep. Excited for the next day…

Chapter 4: Flashback - “First Date”

Summary:

A flashback of Uatu and Ulana’s first date!

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

“Oh, this will be an amazing experience for you, Ulana!” Her triplet sister, Verka said, whilst applying eyeshadow to her.

“Yes! This is your first date after all!” Her other triplet sister, Mirra quietly said, watching from a distance.

Ulana sat there as her older sister finished up with her makeup and let her look in the mirror.

“How does it look, Ulana?”

Ulana could only smile softly “Perfect…”

She stood up as her sister finished adjusting her outfit — a fancy, purple mermaid dress, adorned with hundreds of dazzling rhinestones.

Mirra soon approached her older siblings, bringing a variety of pieces of silver jewelry for Ulana to choose from.

The young woman picked an oval necklace with an amethyst stone in the center — one of the very few gifts given by her parents.

Mirra smiled and put it on her sister, before being pushed away by Verka.

“Ulana, it’s about time I give you some advice, as someone who's dated many, many men.”

“First of all, don’t accept cheap gifts unless insisted on, secondly, he must be handsome… and lastly-“

There was a knock at the door.

“…make sure they keep their oath…. Il get the door.”

Verka walked to the door and opened it, just to be met with a man holding something.

A stuffed animal.

It resembled a cat, and held a small-sized vermillion heart — Ulana’s name carved on it.

Verka immediately took the creature from the man’s hands, and inspected it closely. She was unhappy and dissatisfied, how could her sister's future partner bring her such an ordinary gift?

The woman walked towards Ulana, handing her the so-called “gift” before pulling her aside.

“I don’t think this man is going to be good, I should warn you, you might get your heart broken.”

Ulana brought the stuffed cat close, hugging it gently. It was lovely! She walked past Verka and quickly made her way to the door, greeting the man with a sharp smile.

“Good evening, it is a pleasure to finally meet you! …Uatu?”

“Correct!” The man smiled back, mesmerized by his date’s beauty. Ulana was gorgeous and looked just like a queen, she could rule his own heart if she desired!

“Shall we get going?” He turned to reveal a parked ship to take them to his home.

Ulana nodded before waving to her sisters and boarding the ship.

They soon took off for where humans call “The moon”.

Once they arrived, Uatu took her hands and teleported him and her to his observation room.

It was a small room. No doors or windows, the walls were entirely covered by screens. The devices had different shapes and sizes, but were all controlled by a large, intricate control panel.

Ulana was amazed, it looked nothing like her own observation room.

She glanced at her date as they both sat down on a fancy, golden sofa. It resembled a throne and was quite comfortable, actually.

Uatu turned the equipment on and tuned it to his favorite universe. Both watchers watched it for a while, in silence. Neither of them knew how to start a conversation… It was their first date, they only knew each other's names!

…That is, until Ulana decided to speak up.

“I am deeply sorry for my sister’s behavior, she rarely approves of people, and gave me some pretty terrible advice…”

“Like what?”

“Like only accepting expensive gifts… I understand where she was coming from, me and my sisters were pretty spoiled as children…”

“You have another sibling?”

“Yes! I’m a triplet, the one who answered the door was Verka, and you didn’t get a chance to meet Mirra, she’s pretty sheltered, after all.”

“Why is that exactly? If you mind talking about it?”

“Well… Mirra contracted something known as “Lyme’s Disease” when she was younger…”

“I see… Please let me know if there's a way for me to help you and your family, Ulana, I…”

“I appreciate it, Uatu” The woman reached for his hand, but gave up halfway through it, embarrassed. “Mirra is… Healthy, for now, although she demands special care every once in a while…”

“I understand…” Uatu looked at his date once again, she was even prettier now, under the screens' glow. “...You seem to care quite a lot about your family, Ulana… That's wonderful, and I appreciate you for that…”

Their eyes locked for a brief moment, before Ulana rapidly looked away. She didn't expect her first date to be with such a marvelous, supportive man, and couldn't bring herself to look into his eyes.

“I appreciate your comment, Uatu! I really do… Now, if you don't mind me asking, how about your family? Do you have any siblings?”

“Well… my mother passed away during me and my twin sister, Usagi’s birth, yet I also have an older brother, Ursa…”

“Oh! I’m sorry… please tell me more about your brother and sister…”

“Ursa was nice to be around, but now, he secludes himself in his room, sticking to his observations and not talking to anyone. Usagi travels and moves constantly, she’s currently light years and light years away… We haven’t spoken in years, either.”

Ulana looked down, she felt horrible for her date! He deserved so much better! So she decided to lighten the mood…

“Hey… what would happen if this date was to your standards?”

Uatu looked at her and thought for a second.

“Well, our first priority would be to produce a child, but then I would probably just spoil you with gifts.” He said with a smile.

“Oh, Uatu, that sounds great to me.” The woman smiled back at him, courageous enough to hold his hand this time.

Uatu was left speechless, he wasn't expecting that! He gently squeezed Ulana’s hand, before picking up the stuffed animal he had given her from the sofa.

Ulana was handed the plushie, and immediately brought it closer to her body, once again — she loved how soft it was!

“This is the most beautiful gift I could've asked for… I'll keep this feline safe until our universe collapses.” She grinned, before another question was asked. “...Where did you purchase such a wonderful creature?”

Uatu smiled, “From the earth we are observing now, although I wrote your name on it myself, I visit it from time to time to sample its delights…”

Ulana’s eyes widened in shock, “I-Isn’t that against our oath?”

“Well, I’m not interfering with anything… Hmm, maybe we can go down there for dinner, there’s a place that’s really nice, we can just say we are “cosplayers” and they will treat us like humans!”

Ulana was silent for a moment. Of course she'd be glad to go on a trip with Uatu, but she wasn't quite sure of it.

Besides… She knew Verka’s reaction wouldn't be good…

…But Ulana just couldn't help it, she's never been to any other planet before!

She thought about it for a while, but eventually came to an answer.

“...Sounds perfect to me, Uatu! Is there anything I must be aware of before we part?”

“...There is, actually” the man smirked at her. “Beware of human food, for it is so delicious you won't even know where to start!”

They exchanged glances and smiles, at last. Their fingers were still intertwined and they soon teleported back to Uatu's ship.

Soon, he started it up and they began to fly down to earth, they parked in a forest behind a fast food joint and entered the establishment, walking out with 5 different bags of food and drinks.

They entered the ship and flew back quickly, so they wouldn’t be noticed by anyone. And soon were back to where they came from.

Uatu opened one of the bags and handed Ulana a plain cheeseburger, urging her to try it.

She hesitated at first but then took a bite.

Her eyes widened and she smiled before eating the rest quickly and going for another one.

Uatu chuckled and let her have more as he began to eat as well.

Meanwhile, Ulana was already enjoying her third burger! She loved how differently each one tasted, and was elated to try other unique earth recipes.

Once she finished eating her last burger, the woman decided to take a sip of her drink — a fizzy lemon lime soda.

Uatu himself wasn't quite fond of soft drinks. He eventually left to get a few ice cubes for his orange juice, and was surprised when he turned around and saw his date standing right behind him.

Her eyes sparkled with joy, and a huge, bright smile covered most of her face.

“This was incredible!!! I can’t thank you enough…” She wrapped her arms around his body and pulled him close.

Uatu didn’t know what to do exactly, this is the most physical contact he’s ever had other than fights.

All he did was pull her by the waist and kissed her.

Ulana didn’t pull away though, she just shut her eyes and enjoyed the moment.

They soon pulled away, Uatu having a shocked, yet adorable look on his face.

“Does this mean we are-“

He was interrupted by Ulana pulling him in for another kiss.

It was perfect.

Even after the kiss was already over, their bodies remained close for minutes to come.

They held each other in a tight embrace, until Uatu eventually let go. He took his partner's hand into his own and gently caressed it as their eyes met once again.

“Ulana, I have enjoyed every moment we spent together tonight, your presence is everything I could possibly ask for…” He kissed her hand before looking away.

Uatu stood silent for a moment, he didn't want to ruin this lovely moment, he didn't want to let Ulana go! But the night grew deeper with every passing second, and her sisters were probably worried about her…

“It’s getting late… your family is probably worried about you…”

“They are probably all asleep, I can leave early in the morning, please let me stay with you!!!”

Uatu thought about it, still hesitant, but after looking into her adorable, heavenly eyes… He just couldn't refuse the request!

“Right… That's fine, I suppose! Shall we head to my bedroom… unless you would like to sleep in the living room…”

“I insist on sleeping with you if you are comfortable… we will have to get used to it anyway if we want to produce a child!” She took his hand, hugging his arm as he led her to the bedroom.

Uatu laid down first and gave Ulana plenty of space to lay down as well. They lied on their backs and stared up at the ceiling.

A few minutes passed, and Ulana suddenly realized how cold it was and let out a small shiver.

Uatu noticed it, of course, and reached for her hand — she was freezing!

He didn't think twice, and immediately wrapped both arms around her body, keeping her warm but still leaving significant space between them.

Ulana turned to face her partner, and snuggled up to him. Burrowing her head in his chest and wrapping arms around him as well.

He was surprisingly warm, and had a herbal scent — like recently cut roses!!!

She soon closed her eyes and yawned, before drifting off in her new boyfriend’s chest.

Uatu took notice and let out a quiet yawn himself before kissing the back of her head and resting his chin on the top of it, holding her in a protective embrace.

He soon fell asleep as well, enjoying his girlfriend’s soft, warm touch.

A couple hours went by, and a cozy silence filled the room entirely.

Uatu was at peace, until a tender touch woke him up from his deep slumber. It was Ulana, his adored partner. She lovingly caressed his cheek, and leaned in for a kiss as soon as the man finally opened his eyes.

“Uatu, it's been wonderful to stay here with you, I'll cherish this day for as long as I live!” She squeezed the man’s hand as he sat up and gazed through the bedroom’s only window — it was still early in the morning, yet the moon had no colorful sky.

“I should return home, while Verka and Mirra are asleep…” Ulana took off her necklace, handing it to Uatu before wrapping her arms around his body one last time.

“We can still spend time together later today! Maybe eat some more human food for lunch!”

Uatu smiled softly, “Of course… I have a spare ship next to my main, feel free to use it, I love you…”

They kissed and Ulana began to quietly walk out.

Once she felt the airless moon’s coldness and headed towards the ship, she thought about how wonderful that night was.

…and she couldn’t wait for the future of it!

Chapter Text

“And that, my child, is your uncle Ursa! He’s my older brother!”

Uatu was showing Uris old pictures of his relatives, since Ulana had went out to pick up dinner for them.

The boy was exhausted from such a long and amusing day, but still paid close attention to his unknown family members.

He was very interested by all the pictures popping up on his father’s device, of course, but someone in particular caught his attention.

It was a young boy, around his age, maybe a bit older. He wore a white tunic and had a huge smile spread across his face.

In the picture holding him was a teen, who looked an awful lot like his father, but smaller and also wearing white.

Uris quickly pointed at the picture and looked at his dad for an explanation. He was curious about who this boy was, and how he was related.

His father stared for a few minutes at the picture, his face turning sadded and bleak at the sight, he sighed and tried to swipe away from it.

…just to be stopped by his son.

Uris zoomed into the mysterious boy’s face — who looked surprisingly similar to him — before pointing at it and staring at his dad once again.

“Dada!! Who?” He telepathically communicated

Uatu couldn't bring himself to answer his son's question, he was way too embarrassed to even say anything.

His wide eyes moved back and forth, shifting between his own child and the young one on screen.

His mind was soon flooded by memories that traced back to the fateful day the photo was taken…

_____

“Okay Uatu, you are just watching him for a few hours while I attend to my duties, I wrote in a notebook on instructions.”

And just like that, the teenager was left on his own. He took the notebook and attentively read the instructions left by his older sibling, Ursa.

He soon made his way to his nephew’s room to check on him — who was still sleeping — before heading to the kitchen to prepare a special meal for the baby.

He took out his nephew’s baby food and mixed in some apple sauce, the baby’s favorite snack. And soon, the meal was done and Uatu went to grab his nephew.

Once he got to the barely-decorated room, he noticed his nephew was awake slighty, looking up at his uncle with curiosity and confusion — where was his father?

“Aron! Good afternoon, Il be taking care of you for a few hours, but I made your lunch…” Uatu whispered, picking up Aron and taking him to the kitching, putting him in a high chair.

The baby waited and kicked his feet in excitement, while his uncle served a small portion of food in his favorite bowl.

His smile, however, vanished once the spoon approached his mouth.

Although he loved the apple sauce, Aron couldn't stand the baby food! And he had learned not to fall for his uncle’s tricks again.

The boy shook his head from side to side, a grumpy expression formed on his face. He refused to eat whatever Uatu attempted to offer him this time.

The teenager, on the other hand, simply let out an exhausted sigh, before retrieving Aron’s bowl from the table.

He knew exactly how to feed him.

Uatu took out half of a baked potato, he ate for dinner yesterday, and mashed it up.

He took the spoonful to his nephew’s mouth, who gladly ate it, giggling afterwards.

The feeding lasted for 10 minutes until it was all gone and Uatu carried his nephew to the living room, where a playpen was, and placed him down in it, where he began to play with a few teething toys he had.

The teenager sat down on the floor, next to the playpen, watching as the baby gladly played with his colorful toys.

He had always found his nephew to be… Quite intriguing.

Aron was already well known among the watchers for awakening his powers from a very young age — that being the day after he was born.

His grandfather, Uatu and Ursa’s father, Ikor, had great plans for him, and Uatu was delighted to help! Even if that meant watching his nephew for hours on end, every single day.

He observed Aron for a long time, until the child eventually grew tired of the playpen and teleported out of it, showing up right next to his uncle.

The baby tilted his head before crawling into his uncle’s lap and looking up at him with curiousity

Aron giggled — and with a wave of his hand — began to float towards to ceiling, before beginning to crawl on it.

Uatu sighed again, before waving his own hand to get him down and into his arms.

He strangely felt… light.

And even weirder… he heard giggling coming from the kitchen.

Uatu then realized.

He was holding an illusion.

The illusion faded into thin air as the teen ran to the kitchen, opening every cabinet until he found in nephew in one of them, eating some cookies.

“Aron! How… how… ugh… how clever of you…”

Still impressed at his nephew's antics, Uatu took the boy — and a package of cookies — into his arms before quickly teleporting to the living room.

The baby was carefully placed on the couch, while his uncle reached for the remote, ready to turn the television on.

“Is there anything you'd like to watch, Aron? An animated movie, perhaps?”

The child immediately dropped the cookie and started swinging his arms in the air. He held the bag of snacks firmly before sitting closer to his uncle, excited.

Aron was never allowed to watch cartoons, only documentaries and Shakespearean plays.

But Uatu didn’t mind showing Aron cartoons, mainly because he missed out on them too when he was younger, and liked watching them as a way to make up for lost time.

So he turned on the screen and started to play an older animated movie from earth, a simple fairy tale film.

Aron kept babbling and giggling until the title sequence started playing.

He paid close attention to all the colorful, dreamlike characters on screen, while his small ears appreciated the blessings of a wonderful, otherworldly song.

…It was beautiful.

A stunning and greenish landscape came into sight, lots of graceful, lovely flowers scattered all over the place. Was it what his parents often referred to as… the Earth?

Delighted, the baby kept glancing at his uncle as the movie went on — it was nothing like the documentaries he was used to, he was amazed!

Soon enough, the film ended and the baby let out a tired yawn, it was about time for his nap.

Uatu picked him up, making sure he wasn’t an illusion at first, and proceeded to bring him to his crib, letting him nap for a bit, before walking back to the living room to take a nap on the couch himself.

———

Uatu woke up to the sound of the door opening.

He took a look around, before noticing Aron had teleported back to his arms. He slept like an angel, and his heart beat peacefully.

“He must be tired…” Ursa whispered to his younger brother, slowly approaching the couch with a huge, but gentle smile on his face. “...I suppose you had a lot of fun today!”

“Yes, indeed!” Uatu looked up at his sibling, smiling back at him. “I am glad you trust me enough to take care of my lovely nephew, Ursa! Today was a wonderful day, as it always is.”

“I appreciate it, Uatu, and am very thankful you're willing to help us!” Ursa took a step back and pulled a small camera from his robe’s pocket — the man always carried it with him, just in case. Photography was always a special interest of his.

He pointed the camera towards them and Aron began to wake up.

Aron had already had so many pictures taken of him, so he knew exactly what to do: be cute and smile!

“This will be a great memory…” Ursa whispered to himself before snapping the photo.

———

Uatu kept staring at the picture with his son, before turning away he couldn’t bear to see it anymore and turned it off.

He picked up his son and stared at him for a second… oh no, he did look like him.

Could he possibly have the same fate as him?

Uatu couldn’t bear that thought, and pulled his baby son in for a long, long, hug.

Uris hugged him back — although he couldn't quite grasp what exactly was happening — and eventually realized there were tears coming from his father’s eyes.

Uatu was…

…Crying.

The man held his child close, he refused to believe Uris would become a fully grown watcher someday…

He soon noticed someone standing at the room’s entrance, and immediately directed his gaze towards the door.

It was Ulana.

The woman placed the few goods she had purchased on a nearby table and promptly ran to comfort her husband, pulling both him and Uris into a tight embrace.

“Uatu, my dearest… What's wrong?”

He took a deep breath and wiped his eyes, he had to stay strong for his wife and child.

“We… we were just looking at photos… that’s all… e-everything is fine, my love.”

“Don’t worry, we can talk about it later, if you are comfortable. Let’s just eat and relax for a while until it’s Uris’ bedtime.”

Uatu quietly nodded, before pulling her close for a kiss on the forehead.

They all sat down and enjoyed their dinner, before Ulana quickly left to give Uris a bath, as he was a messy eater.

Uatu was left alone for a bit. Just like how he was when Aron died.

He felt like it was all his fault.

Ursa hasn’t even interacted with him, nor anyone since.

Uatu couldn't help but wonder how his brother was doing nowadays…

Perhaps he should call him and… Apologize — something Uatu never had the opportunity to do.

So he got out his communicator and pressed “CALL” on his contact.

It rang for a while, but no response was heard. Uatu tried once more, but eventually hung up, ashamed.

He knew Ursa wasn't willing to talk to him — at least not for now — but there was still hope.

Uatu clicked on his brother’s contact again, and decided to send him a message. Even better, a voice message!

“Greetings, Ursa, it is your brother speaking… I just wanted to apologize for… everything. I am aware this is too late and you most certainly do not want to speak to me anymore, but I feel like we should reconnect, we had a strong relationship after all. I feel like you should know where I am in life now! I want to invite you to dinner one night, any night you want. You must meet my wife and son after all… Well, I should probably leave you now, hopefully you respond someday… I miss you…”

He sent the message before hearing his wife teleport with a sleeping Uris in her arms.

He handed Ulana his communicator, welcoming both her and their child into his arms.

Both were wrapped in a tight, loving embrace that could last for eternity.

Uatu didn't want to let them go, he couldn't stand the thought of losing the two people he loved the most…

His eyes locked on his wife's — their connection was stronger than ever, even though no words were exchanged.

“You must be tired, darling” Ulana kissed her husband’s cheek, tenderly. “Let's head to bed, shall we?”

Uatu nodded, before taking her hand and teleporting the three of them to Uris' room. The mother gently rocked her child one last time, before placing him on the crib.

They observed him for a few minutes before teleporting to their own bedroom, changing into comfortable clothes, and laying down on the bed.

Ulana spent time snuggling into her lover and kissing him every opportunity he would let her. She wanted him to feel better.

“Would you like to talk about what happened?”

“Of course… I would never keep any problem I had from you… well… I was showing Uris old photos of some of my family, and… and he grew interested in a photo of… Aron.”

“Oh, Uatu!” She held him close “That must have brought back terrible memories! I am so sorry that happened-“

“Mhm… I still blame myself for his fate…”

“Don’t say that! It was fate itself was it? You always believed that fate controlled everything, my shared heart!”

It was silent between them for a moment.

Uatu thought about it, and realized his wife was right, after all.

He pulled her even closer, caressing the back of her head for a while until their eyes finally met.

“I refuse to believe I would've made it this far without you by my side… I love you, my dear. I promise to keep you and our beloved child safe, even if it costs me my life.”

Ulana was surprised by a soft, gentle kiss on the lips, followed by a warm hug that didn't leave even a single inch between their bodies.

“I love you as well, Uatu! And I'm grateful to the universe for giving me the opportunity to share my life with someone so generous and caring as you…”

They fell asleep in each other’s arms, and a few hours later Uatu’s communicator rang. After a while, a voice message could be heard. A soft, trembling voice was heard from it.

“Hello?… Hello? It’s-It’s Ursa… Is… Is tomorrow okay for me to come to dinner?”

But Uatu and Ulana were still sleeping.

Chapter Text

Uris giggled as he hid in his closet.

He and his parents were playing hide and seek, and they haven’t found him for 45 minutes, mainly because he kept teleporting to different places out of being indecisive.

The baby yawned as he decided to lay down… that was, until he heard footsteps come into the room.

The boy started snickering to himself. He considered teleporting to another spot, but the thought of being found by his parents — and watching their possible reactions — was amusing enough.

Ulana approached the closet, after hearing soft laughter coming from within. She opened the door and… There he was!

“Uris, my child!!! I cannot believe I have finally found you, come here!” She took her sleepy son and brought him close to her chest, rocking him slightly. “What a great hiding spot! Strange… I can almost recall inspecting this exact place before…”

Uris soon fell asleep in his mother’s arms as she headed to the living room to inform her husband that the game was already over.

But then she heard a knock at the door, and Uatu was walking to answer it.

He gently opened the door.

“Greetings-“

It was a man, one who he hasn’t seen in forever.

His brother, Ursa.

He was scrawny, he looked like he hasn’t eaten in days, this idea was supported by his slightly-sunken cheeks, and how his clothes looked oversized on him.

There was what looked like tear streams on his eyes, but by further inspection it was clear that it was actual skin markings from crying so much.

If he had hair, it would probably be an unkempt mess.

He was looking at the ground, but moved his eyes to meet his little brother’s.

Uatu stared back, but his eyes couldn't recognize his sibling — he looked entirely different, after all.

Ulana, on the other hand, knew exactly who he was from a first glance. Excited to meet her brother-in-law for the very first time, she tried her best to hide how concerned she actually was, and warmly welcomed the man into their residence.

“.........Oh! You must be Ursa, correct? I am Ulana, Uatu's spouse. It is a pleasure to meet you!” The woman guided him to the living room, Uatu following after them, still in shock.

She allowed the brothers to sit on the couch, before noticing something Ursa was holding.

The woman tilted her head to get a better look at it, only to find a little brown plushie, a jackalope, it looked like it was meant for a small child.

Ursa noticed her looking at it and hid it from view, before speaking.

“I… I got your message about dinner… I-I’m sorry if this was a surprise, I just assumed you got my message back…” he fidgeted with his hands as he spoke, refusing to make eye contact.

Uatu noticed how apprehensive his older brother was, and assumed it would be way more comfortable for him to communicate via telepathy.

He sent Ulana a telepathic message beforehand, so that she could be made aware of the plan. She nodded in agreement, before teleporting to Uris' room, the baby still nestled in her arms.

“Do not worry, Ursa… You're welcome to visit us whenever you desire. I am elated to be here with you, it's been a very long time since we last saw each other…”

The man was frightened at first, and instinctively gave him the side-eye, but was eventually able to formulate a coherent thought.

“Well… what were you planning to eat for dinner?”

“We haven’t prepared anything yet, but was there anything in particular you would like to eat, Ursa?”

“Well, I’m not quite sure… I'll eat anything…”

Uatu smiled mentally, he had an idea.

He got up and walked to the kitchen, getting out his waffle maker and some batter, along with a bag of “potato smileys”. He was going to make his brother’s favorite meal!

Ulana teleported to the kitchen after hearing clattering and observed what her husband was doing.

“Uatu, my beloved, do you have anything in mind for dinner?”

He turned to his partner, in a failed attempt to hide the huge grin that had already formed in his face. “Indeed! I am preparing Ursa’s favorite meal, which we usually referred to as “nebula waffles!” I'm quite certain he hasn’t eaten such wonderful food in ages...”

Ulana smiled as well, upon noticing how excited Uatu was, and hugged him from behind. “Oh, dear, he'll love it! I am proud of you for caring about your brother, and I know he appreciates it just as much as I do.”

The embrace lasted for a moment, while the woman attentively observed the magenta-colored sauce prepared by her husband.

It smelled oddly wonderful, and she gave her husband a peck on the nose before walking to the living room, where Ursa was petting his stuffed animal while bouncing his leg.

She made herself known in order not to startle him.

“Hello, Ursa…” she communicated while she sat on the same couch as him. But he was focused on the stuffed animal.

He soon glanced to her and hid the plush toy away in a large inner pocket. That’s when Ulana noticed some stuff poking out of it.

It looked like… a book?

“Oooo, what book is that?” She asked him telepathically. He turned to her before getting it out.

“It’s a photo album I thought you both would want to have… I used to enjoy photography… these were my first “good” photos from when Uatu was an infant…”

Ulana let go an enthusiastic smile before turning to face him, she could only imagine how adorable Uatu must've been as a child!

“Oh, I see! I would love to take a look at the amazing photos you have in there, if that's alright with you!”

Ursa shifted his gaze between Ulana and the photo album. It lasted for a few seconds until he decided to open it on a random page.

Ulana was carefully handed the album, and spent a moment appreciating the photos.

One in particular caught her attention: it pictured Uatu, as a baby, sitting on a small play mat and holding a few toys. The room — which Ulana assumed to be his own bedroom — was poorly lit and not very spacious. Despite everything, Uatu still had a huge, bright smile plastered all over his face. It was lovely!

Ulana was smiling, her husband was such an adorable baby!

And even better, he looked exactly like Uris! …At least in her opinion.

Speaking of Uris, with the sound of a zap he appeared in her lap, babbling and reaching his arms out to her.

He then turned his head and saw his uncle for the first time in his life.

He blinked in disbelief, but didn't stop staring at Ursa. Who was that man, and why did he look so much like his father?

Uris sat properly on his mother's lap, in order to get a better view. He then noticed all the scars and markings scattered over his face.

Frightened, the child started crying and immediately buried himself into Ulana’s arms.

“Oh… I’m so sorry about Uris… I'll calm him down!” She quickly teleported with him out of the room

Ursa was frozen.

Uris sure looked a lot like Aron. Even sounded like him.

Then.

All of the bad memories flooded back to him.

He and his son’s contestant arguments, his girlfriend leaving him, the shame of everything, and worst of all.

His son’s demise.

He let out a gasp and covered his face, sobbing and breathing heavily.

Uatu heard him, and knew exactly what was unfolding in the living room. He teleported from the kitchen and sat down beside his brother, trying his best to remain calm.

He gently stroked his back, but didn't let any words out until Ursa finally turned to face him — which lasted for a brief moment before the man looked away, ashamed.

“Ursa… There's no need to answer if you don't feel like it, but I want to let you know I am and will always be here for you. I'm proud of you for who you are…”

His older brother could only stare at him while sniffling.

Soon, Uatu realized that the food was done, so he rushed to the kitchen and began to plate the waffles and potato smileys, saving some for Uris, Ulana, and himself, pouring syrup all over, just how his brother liked it. Grabbing a fork, he carefully walked to the living room, plate in hand.

Ursa noticed the plate instantly, and his eyes widened, before reaching to grab it, almost drooling over the contents of the plate.

He took the first bite, and was instantly sent back to his youth. He closed both eyes and took a deep breath before enjoying the rest of his meal, relishing each mouthful.

He had to stop himself from flapping his hands, an awful habit of his.

Once he finished eating, Ursa carefully put the plate down on his lap, before glancing at his younger sibling.

“......Thanks, Uatu… This… It was delicious…” he said awkwardly, wiping his mouth before grabbing that same stuffed animal from his pocket and began to pet it.

Uatu took notice and instantly recognized its origin.

“That… belonged to-“

“Him…” his brother whispered while petting.

“Didn’t it have a name? Like-“

“Orion, their name is Orion.” He said blankly.

“Orion…” Uatu looked away before his mind had the chance to be flooded with memories from his beloved nephew, once again.

He missed Aron as well but, this time, he had to be strong… For Ursa.

Both men gazed intently at the stuffed jackalope, until the older sibling put it back in his robe's inner pocket. He got up from the couch slowly before facing Uatu.

“It's been a pleasure to be with you again… Your… Wife and child are… are lovely, but I need to return home…”

“Well, do you mind if I come with you for a little bit? I promise not to be a bother.”

It looks as if Ursa had a failed attempt of smiling, something he hasn’t done in years. “Reminds me of our youth, you always liked following me…” he nodded while speaking. “You can come, just, don’t mind the mess.”

Uatu quickly teleported to his wife to let her know this, and she smiled and explained that she’s trying to teach Uris to not be scared of him, and about the incident, which made Uatu feel terrible.

He teleported back and let his brother lead the way.

Soon, they arrived via ship and Uatu instantly realized he hadn't been outside in forever, his home was in the middle of nowhere!

They soon made it in and had to walk over piles of garbage, old photos, and books. It was a mess!

Uatu was horrified but tried his best not to pay much attention to his surroundings, as he didn't want his brother to feel embarrassed about it.

The more he reflected on it, the more he realized how severe the situation actually was…

Ursa had been profoundly affected by Aron’s death. Years after the incident took place, and he still suffered greatly.

…But worst of all, not even his own sibling was there for him.

Uatu felt his heart aching, it was now filled with remorse and shame. He should've reached out to Ursa much sooner, instead of cutting contact with him.

He felt angry for not being able to change the past, along with many other dreadful sentiments he couldn't quite explain.

Soon, he came across a room, a room he recognized as Aron’s childhood bedroom.

He noticed his brother walking to the bathroom, and decided it would be a good time to check it out.

What he saw shocked him to his core.

There were framed photos of Aron, all around the room, shelves with candles, old toys, and anything Aron ever owned. Lined up across the wall were all the parenting books Ursa got when his girlfriend was first pregnant. There were also a lot of incense and gemstones.

Uatu fixed his wide-eyed gaze on the memorial, awestruck. He came closer to it, his eyes travelling through the many shelves dedicated to his nephew.

He couldn't even imagine the amount of time Ursa must have spent on that — which only increased his appreciation for him.

Uatu turned his back to the shrine, his tear-filled eyes finally facing his brother. He craved an answer, but couldn't bring himself to come up with a question.

“I… made this to comfort myself, to be surrounded by my beloved son… I’m sorry if it’s… creepy…” he sighed, covering his face out of shame.

“D-don’t be ashamed, brother… I know you’re in pain from all of this…” he put his hand on his shoulder, wanting to hug him, but knew his sibling might not be comfortable… yet.

Ursa began to tear up as well through his covered face. Before fully embracing his younger brother.

Uatu hugged him back, massaging his back as he thought of ways to soothe his sorrows.

“Ursa… You were the most incredible father Aron could've asked for, I'm certain he loved you even more than he let go… I myself strive to be a parent just as magnificent as you…”

Ursa's tears had long ceased to flow, yet he remained silent as his sibling went on with his open-hearted speech.

“As a child who had neither a father nor a mother to guide me, I am proud to admit that you were the one who shaped me into the man I am today… I've learned so much from you, Ursa… Never underestimate how fortunate I am to have you by my side...”

Once he uttered his last sentence, Uatu immediately broke down in tears, a crying he was unable to hold on.

“Please… please don’t cry. Shh, everything’s okay now, it’s not your fault, it’s mine…” Ursa comforted his brother.

They stayed in that hug for a long time before Uatu was able to be slowly soothed.

They both turned to look at the centerpiece photo in a special frame, Aron on the day he entered adulthood…

Both men stared fixedly at it. The photo stared back, giving Ursa just what he needed to finally speak up.

“Aron… He was special, an exceptional man. A prodigy among watchers. I still am… Extremely proud of him…”

Uatu glanced at his brother, before facing the photo again. What he observed, father and son, reminded him of his own child, and the lovely, strong relationship they had already built in this short time.

Oh, how he would want to put time in a bottle, just to preserve his son’s early years. If Aron was still existing, he would have probably loved Uris…

Ursa got closer to the photo, and gently dusted it off.

“My, I haven’t cleaned this room in a month, I better get to cleaning, but thanks for visiting, my brother.”

“It was wonderful to spend another day with you… I'm aware that this might seem like an odd proposal, but wouldn't you like to… Spend more time in my residence? You can stay as long as you like, and we might be able to provide you the assistance you need…”

Ursa didn't take his eyes off the memorial, but still pondered his brother's offer.

“M-Maybe give me a few days to think about it, and pack my stuff I decide to go…”

Uatu nodded, before walking over to give him another hug.

“Stay strong for me, Ursa, contact me when you make a choice or if you need more time…”

He headed to his ship to go home.

Soon, he walked through the front door at his home on the moon, and was immediately met with his son running to hug him.

“Dada!!!” Uris looked up at his father with a bright smile on his face. Ulana followed after him, holding the door open as her husband and child returned home.

“So, how did it go?” She greeted her beloved with a quick, but loving embrace.

“He will give us a definitive answer in a few days!” Uatu smiled warmly at his wife, before being interrupted by their child tugging on his robe.

“Dada!! Mama!!” They could hear his stomach rumbling, he must be hungry!

“Oh, my sweet child, we shall eat now, do not worry!” Ulana said, carrying her son to the kitchen, putting him in his Hugh chair before serving him the waffles and potato smileys.

The baby grabbed a piece of waffle and put it in his mouth, his eyes lighting up almost instantly.

He continues to eat until moving on to the potato smileys, loving them too!

The couple exchanged glances, Uatu was delighted at his son's reaction! He added some extra syrup to his meal before mentioning his older sibling again.

“Uris, my dear child! Would you like to know a very interesting fact regarding your uncle?”

The boy nodded, elated, as he quickly finished eating the remaining potato smileys.

“Well, your uncle had a son, you’ve seen a picture of him!”

The baby instantly knew who he has talking about, and listened intently as his father pulled up the same photo on his communicator.

He quickly let the communicator face his son, as the baby stared at the photo, it was like looking in a mirror how alike they were!

“His name was Aron, and he was a genius just like you!”

Uris' smile grew wider, and he quickly teleported to his father's arms. He still looked intently at the communicator, waiting for the story to continue.

Uatu glanced at his partner — who was equally happy — before turning back to his child.

The trio soon teleported to Uris’ bedroom, each parent sitting on a rocking chair once the baby had already been placed on his crib.

The man made himself comfortable before finally starting the tale, telling it in a soothing manner, similar to a regular bedtime story.

“There was once a little boy, just like you, named Aron…”

He proceeded to tell small stories about Aron’s youth, he decided to save the stuff about his adulthood and teenage years for when his son was older.

Soon, after finishing a story, he glanced at the crib and his partner’s rocking chair, just to find his son, and Ulana, fast asleep.

Uatu got up from his chair and approached the crib, planting a kiss on his child's forehead.

He then walked towards his lover, taking her into his arms before teleporting to their own bedroom.

Ulana was delicately placed on her side of the bed. Her husband soon joined her after grabbing a heavy blanket to keep them both warm.

Uatu took some time to reflect on his family, and how far he’s gotten. And how being reunited with his brother made it all better.

Pretty soon, he fell asleep holding his wife gently.

Chapter 7: Chapter 6

Summary:

Ursa goes to therapy!!!!

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Ursa sat in the waiting room of a run-down therapy office, on his communicator.

He's been living with Uatu and his family for a few weeks now and, as promised, they were doing everything in their power to get him professional help.

Recently, he had been tested for possible mental conditions he could have had. And the results had come in a week ago shortly after they found him a therapist.

He was looking over the short list on his communicator, it had obvious stuff like anxiety and depression, stuff he’s never heard of like Oppositional Defiant Disorder. And two that really confused him.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder, which he didn’t know watchers could have either of them.

Before he could ponder more about it a familiar looking man walked through the entrance, he looked like he was in a rush.

“AGH! I’M SO SORRY I'M LATE! MY ALARM DIDN’T GO OFF AND MY SHIP BROKE DOWN AND- I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be telling you this… my name is Lynx… and I’m going to be your therapist…”

“Lynx… I-I think I went to class with you, you probably already know my name b-but it’s Ursa-“

“HEY! I remember you! You were always in the back of the classroom drawing! Anyways, let’s go to the office and begin the session…”

He was led to a medium-sized room with a couch, a spinnable chair and a large desk.

It all looked fairly clean, especially the new computer on the desk.

Ursa sat down on the couch. His eyes darted around the room, inspecting every shelf and all of the neatly arranged psychology books.

Lynx soon noticed how interested his new patient was, and took that as the perfect opportunity to find out more about him.

“It took me eons to properly organize my office! But I finally did it. I'm quite satisfied with the result, what do you think?”

Ursa thought for a while, his office was… Fascinating, that's for sure. However, the fact that he was in the midst of a therapy session hadn't hit him yet. Nevertheless, the man still managed to come up with a compelling response.

“...It has a comforting, quite soothing atmosphere. I-It looks nothing like I expected it to… Thankfully...”

“Well, thank you so much! I’ve never had any compliments about it… in fact… no compliments in my entire career… HEY! Did I mention you’re my first ever patient?”

Ursa let out an audible gasp, before freezing in shock.

Uncertainty filled his mind, what was he supposed to do after receiving such overwhelming news? Message his younger brother, go home?

…For some reason, however, he felt like he needed to trust Lynx.

He seemed like he meant well, why not give him a chance.

“So… Do you play chess?” The professional asked, getting out a board and some pawns.

Ursa nodded before choosing which color and began to play with him.

———

Meanwhile, Uatu, Ulana, and Uris were at their universes’ equivalent to a mall.

It was a special day for Ursa, so Ulana had the brilliant idea of purchasing him a special gift! He deserved it, after all. Besides, she got to spend quality time with her beloved husband and child, which was heavily appreciated by all three of them.

It's been a long time since the couple visited the mall, that being a few weeks before Uris was born — which meant this was his first time shopping with his parents!

The baby boy moved frantically in his father's arms, amazed by all the colorful products he had never seen before! The mall was crowded as well, much to his enjoyment.

Soon they made it to the large aisle of books, just what they were looking for.

They already bought some sensory fidgets, noise cancelling headphones, and everything Uatu thought his brother would like or need from how he observed his behaviors. They even got him a very soft blanket!.

Now, they wanted to get him a book on his favorite subject, constellations!

In their youth, he used to go out at night and take photos of the stars and label and sort them by what formation they were from. It was a very thoughtful idea, and even better was the fact they found the perfect book!

It was chronicles of every known star formation of their universe, it even had constellations that were discovered while Ursa would seclude himself.

It was the perfect gift for him!

______

“...Constellations, you say? That's a fascinating interest to have!”

“Indeed. In fact, I find it impressive that you were also named after a constellation…”

“My parents were outstanding astronomy enthusiasts…” Lynx’s eyes lightened up once he mentioned his family. “I actually inherited their love for the space, for which I'm grateful!”

Ursa lowered his head, redirecting his gaze to the floor. “I've never met anyone with a similar interest… E-Except for my son… Aron…”

Both men were silent for a long while, whilst Lynx stored the remaining chess pieces in a small wooden box. His patient had already brought up this topic during their session — although it would still take him some time to overcome such devastating feelings.

“I’m… sorry for your loss, Ursa… he sounded like a handful, yet it sounded like you loved him dearly…”

“…let’s talk more about constellations…”

“OH MY! Did I have a brilliant idea! What if we were to go out to get a drink or two? I know I’m not supposed to befriend my clients, but we already knew each other before so it’s fine!”

Ursa froze, he hadn’t consumed alcohol in eons, the last time we went was for Aron’s 21’s birthday. That was a good day.

He decided to nod, maybe this was the start of a good friendship!

“GREAT! We can take my ship, and we can come back RIGHT before you are picked up! My ship self-drives so we don’t have to worry about going overboard on drinking! I'll pay!”

Lynx was ecstatic, he, too, had no friends and was willing to take anything he could for socialization, they quickly left his office and hopped in the ship, heading on the road to the local bar.

A few minutes passed before they finally arrived at one of the most popular bars in their universe — and Lynx's favorite.

It was still early, which meant the establishment was still fairly empty… That, however, wasn't an issue at all.

The therapist walked up to his favorite seat, his acquaintance sitting right next to him.

Ursa hadn't been to a bar in ages! Therefore, he decided to order an Adonis, a low-alcohol, easy to prepare cocktail. His companion, on the other hand, was willing to have a stronger drink: a Long Island Iced Tea.

While waiting for their drinks, the men were eventually approached by an older individual. They were tall and wore a distinctive attire — clear evidence of a higher social status.

“Well, well, well, ain’t it the man himself? We haven’t seen you around these parts in almost 10 years, Ursa…”

Lynx turned to his client, who just looked ahead and took his drink when it was served.

“Look at me, Ursa… I saw you enter and you look like a corpse, horrible appearance with the fact your son was a bast-“

“LEAVE HIM ALONE!” Lynx shouted, slamming his drink on the ground causing the glass cup to shatter.

The man backed off with a scowl, going back to his seat.

Lynx turned to the bartender sheepishly. “…I’ll pay for the glass cup… I'll take another Long Island Iced Tea….”

A few minutes passed and another cocktail was made. Lynx took a long sip before turning back to his client, who had been staring at him wide-eyed for a while now.

“I… I apologize if I've scared you…… How are you feeling, Ursa? Would you prefer to return to my office or-”

“I-It’s fine…” the man immediately snapped out of his trance, shifting his gaze to the bartender and ordering another drink. “...I'm grateful for your support, Lynx. No one has ever stood up for me… Like that…”

The therapist smiled at him before taking yet another sip from his glass. That huge, lovely smile of his soon turned into a smirk — the alcohol was finally starting to kick in.

“Soooooo…. Any pretty lady you have your eye on?” He raised and lowered his brows quickly.

“W-Well… not since my now-ex girlfriend, Aphro…” he giggled to himself “I-I used to call her my “Laffy Aphie”… But no… not since then…”

Lynx was saddened by this information — who could leave such a nice man like Ursa? He’d definitely date him if he was homosexual, which he totally isn’t.

That was a lie, though.

Throughout Lynx’s life, he’s always had repressed feelings towards men. He hated to admit it, but he was pretty sure he was gay.

He hadn’t come out to his family in fear of rejection, and he lacked friends.

But the more he drank, the more he realized how pretty his client was.

He already broke the rule of befriending his client, why not make a move?

“Here, I'll pay for your next 3 drinks!” Lynx beamed as he spoke. Very confident this would spark an emotion from his client.

“......Oh!!!” Ursa was caught off guard, but still answered with a rather genuine smile, neglecting the fact that he didn't bring any money with him. “Y-You don't have to, I can cover both of our expenses and-”

“Oh no, I insist!!! I invited you to come here in the first place…” the man gladly pulled his wallet out of his robe's inner pocket, accidentally tipping the bartender much more than he intended.

However, Lynx didn't mind it at all. In fact, he had no time to process what had occured, since his mind was entirely filled with thoughts about his client.

Ever since he was a child, he had never seen his acquaintance smile; Ursa always had this mysterious, intimidating aura surrounding him.

But now, after everything he had been forced to go through, he still managed to give such a sweet, gentle smile!

Lynx felt his own heart pounding — that smile did enhance his features, Ursa looked even more beautiful than he already did, even if it only lasted for a brief moment!

Without thinking properly, the man let out a short sentence that his friend would still remember for years to come: “You should smile more often, Ursa…”

Ursa let out a blush before covering his mouth, trying to wipe the smile off his face. It was a nice comment, but he felt stubborn in showing his enjoyment for it.

He gave up and revealed his smile and blush to him, before calling the bartender to order some stronger drinks.

They chatted and drank before they were almost blackout drunk, before they were cut off by the bartender.

“You two have given me a lot of revenue today, which I am thankful for, but you’ve both had enough drinks for today, feel free to stay and talk as much as you’d like though!” Was all they said before turning to serve other customers.

They still proceeded into their conversation without any drinks, before Lynx slowly got more sober.

“…and yeah, that’s how I was told I’d never get a client, but HEY! Here you are now! …unless you are uncomfortable with me, WHICH IM SO SORRY IF I AM MAKING YOU FEEL THAT WAY!!!””

“NO! You don’t make me uncomfortable Lynx, this is the happiest I’ve been in years!”

“Are you serious…?!?!?! I'm glad I could help you somehow, Ursa!!! And… And I apologize if today's session wasn't exactly what you were expecting…”

“...What are you talking about? …Lynx!” Ursa got up from his seat and smiled at his therapist, whose heart instantly melted. “...I'm glad we've met again after such a long time! T-This is everything I could've asked for, I had plenty of fun today…”

Lynx got up as well, letting out a delighted smile, he couldn't hide it any longer!

Their eyes finally met once again, Ursa was obviously elated from the encounter — and so was Lynx! In fact, this was the perfect moment to express his feelings…

……But he couldn't, what if Ursa didn't feel the same way about him? Besides, he was his first client and friend!

He sighed to himself, maybe another time he could confess. Maybe this was a chance to get to know him before jumping to conclusions.

Lynx and Ursa got up from their seats, deciding they would leave and return to the office.

They both stumbled to the car before putting it on “auto drive” mode before relaxing as the short drive began.

After a few minutes, Lynx turned to his now-crush, who had fallen asleep.

Lynx smiled softly as they arrived at the office and he carried him back to the room they were in, letting him rest on the couch as he began to type in Ursa’s file.

Just a few minutes in, and he was already halfway done! He constantly checked on his client to make sure he was okay — each stolen glance reminding him of the wonderful time they had spent together.

Lost in his own thoughts, the therapist was startled when he heard the door to his office crack open, hushed footsteps echoing through the waiting room.

“...Oh!! Ursa, I suppose your family is here to pick you up!” Lynx approached his friend and gently placed a hand on his shoulder — a failed attempt to wake him up.

“......Ursa” another attempt to jolt him awake was made — but with no success. “I understand you, I'm tired as well… But your brother is here, wake up!! Please…”

The man eventually gave up, and headed outside the room to greet his crush’s family. They were all relaxing on the couch, seemingly exhausted too.

“Ah, hello! Ursa seemed to have fallen asleep during my session, he is in my office and refuses to get up.” He said with a soft smile

He led the man, woman, and baby to his office, where Ursa was snoring away his drunkenness.

“We played chess, talked, and overall he did great for his first day! Tell him I said thank you! And I will see you all next week!”

Uatu smiled amusingly at his brother’s laziness and decided to pick him up to take him to the ship.

Uris giggled at the sight in his mother’s arms, finding it humorous how his uncle snored and didn’t stir when he was picked up.

The baby was no longer scared of his uncle’s appearance after weeks of him being around, he had gotten used to him thankfully, Ursa, on the other hand, was getting there.

He was able to sit with him, observe him, even play with him at times.

But didn’t have the heart to hold him.

The family headed to the ship, thankful that they had the location memorized so Ursa could just teleport there next time, and headed off back home.

The ship was soon parked once the family finally arrived home. Ulana entered the living room, carrying in her arms both her child and all of their shopping bags while Uatu headed to his older sibling’s room.

Ever since Ursa started living with them, the house had undergone a few changes to accommodate everyone. That, of course, included Ursa's brand-new room.

The man was carefully placed on the bed, he still slept like an angel!

Uatu was surprised once his wife and son teleported beside him all of a sudden. Uris had a giant, bright smile on his face! He found it amusing to see his uncle like that — but had been previously advised not to clap or do anything that could possibly startle and wake Ursa up.

Ulana handed her husband the gifts they had purchased earlier, including some comfortable clothes and pieces of jewelry they assumed Ursa would like.

The gifts were arranged next to him, but one box stood out: it was wrapped in colorful paper, a bright red ribbon sitting on top of its lid; inside, the wonderful book they had picked just for him.

They quietly left the room to let him sleep and proceeded with the day.

And hours later, Ursa had his first feeling of being hungover in a long time…

“Yes… I understand, I'll be there with my family immediately…”

Ulana hung up her communicator, worry expressed on her face. Her husband, who had just entered the room, had realized this and rushed to see what was going on.

“Ulana, what has happened? I will do everything in my power to help with-“

“Uatu… it’s my sister… she’s in the hospital….”

“I… I understand…” The man took his beloved’s hand, caressing it softly as he attempted to soothe her. “It will be alright, dear, do not worry… Would you like me to call Ursa and Uris to go with us?”

The woman nodded and gave his hand a loving squeeze before going into another room to pack her bag — Mirra had already been sent to the hospital before, and Ulana was willing to stay with her for as long as necessary.

Uatu quietly walked up to his child's room, trying to calm down his own restless mind along the way — he too was concerned about Mirra’s well-being, even if they had only met twice.

He began to pack some toys and needed items before picking his sleeping baby son up from the crib and walking with him and the bag to Ursa’s room.

He was listening to music with his new noise-cancelling headphones, so it was hard for him to be told to pack some things in case they stayed overnight. Ursa understood after being told what was going on and quickly packed some items, alongside Orion, the jackalope plushie he brought everywhere.

They soon gathered and began to teleport to the waiting room, where the line was short enough for them to be able to check in and go straight to Mirra’s room.

Ulana’s sibling was laying in her bed with a bit of machinery hooked up to her, and smiled softly once she saw her beloved sister.

The bags were quickly placed on the floor before Ulana approached the bed, trying to put on a more relaxed face.

“Mirra… Once I received the news I knew I had to come and see you as soon as possible…” The woman reached for a small steel container inside her purse, and placed it on top of the overbed table.

The lid was removed, and the room was suddenly filled with the rich scent of fresh chicken broth.

“...Oh, Ulana! You didn't have to…” The delicious meal was received with a smile! Mirra took a spoonful and spent a brief moment appreciating its flavor before shifting her gaze to the three individuals waiting in the corner of the room.

“......Oh, my!! Forgive me for not introducing them sooner!!!” Ulana approached her husband, taking his hand and giving both him and Ursa a nod to come closer to Mirra's bed.

“You have already met Uatu, my husband. This is Ursa, his older sibling…” She pointed at her brother-in-law before taking her beloved child into her own arms and leaning over the bed. “...and this is Uris, your nephew, who you also know from the countless pictures I've sent you!”

The curious baby stared at the lady who looked nearly identical to his mother, and reached his arms out towards his aunt.

The lady smiled and caressed his cheek “Hello, dear… it’s so nice to finally meet you in person!”

Soon, the baby crawled out of his mother’s grasp and onto the bed, before sitting down in his aunt’s lap, staring at him with big eyes; ones that he inherited from his mother.

Mirra’s smile widened as she picked up Uris and pulled him in for a hug.

“I love you so much…” she whispered into his ear, before planting a kiss on his nose.

The baby giggled at this before being passed back to his mother.

Meanwhile, Ursa didn’t know what to do or say, he was a bit nervous when meeting new people after all.

Luckily, his brother was there to encourage him.

“It is wonderful that we have been able to reunite the entire family at last!” The younger brother spoke up, walking towards his sister-in-law and taking his own sibling with him. “Ursa and I were overly concerned about you once Ulana informed us of your stay in the hospital…”

The lady smiled at them both, staring at Ursa now that his turn to speak had finally arrived.

The man glanced at Uatu before speaking up, still nervous. His troubled mind, however, was soothed by his brother's subtle nod of approval.

As he slowly started to start a conversation, Ulana couldn’t help but think to herself. She was grateful everyone she enjoyed being around was all in one place, but yet, that wasn’t entirely true. There was someone missing, and for good reason too. The day of the incident would never leave her mind after it…

———-

“Oh, Ulana! That’s great you are visiting Uatu for the millionth time… but when will you be back? I know it’s probably going to be the next day, but I hate being alone with nothing to do, and Verka never wants to do anything with me!”

“Mirra…” her sister sighed. “It’s already evening, and il be back in the morning… il just be over there-“

“Over WHERE are you going?” Ulana and Mirra’s other sister, Verka said, her loud voice booming as all 3 triplets were finally in the same room.

The door slammed open, that being enough to send chills through Mirra’s entire body. Ulana, on the other hand, was already — unfortunately — used to her older sister's reaction and knew exactly what to do.

“...Oh, Verka! I have been dating Uatu for eight months now, there's no need for you to-”

Her speech was cut short by Verka's attempt to show authority by fiercely shutting the door whilst stomping her feet on the ground.

“...THAT'S NOT WHAT I ASKED!!! But well, of course it has to do with him, that useless tramp you call your boyfriend! I don't know why I expected anything different coming from you!!!”

Ulana was taken aback by her sibling’s suddenly raised voice, and couldn't help but feel like things would soon reach a point of no return.

“Verka, don't you dare open your mouth to talk about him like that!! Uatu loves and cares for me more than anyone ever did, I apologize if you have never been able to feel like that before… Perhaps your previous relationships weren't so perfect after all-”

She was met with a slap to the face.

Ulana stayed on the floor in shock, tears beginning to fall from her eyes. In that moment, all love for her sister faded into oblivion, and she knew one thing…

She wasn’t going to stay in contact with her anymore.

The lady burst through the door, and quickly teleported to her lover’s home on the blue side of the moon. She had memorized how to get there enough for her to be able to teleport whenever she wanted to.

She walked to the observation room, where Uatu was in his throne-like chair, and quickly turned around to find his girlfriend.

“...Ulana, my dearest!! I'm always delighted to see you!!!”

The man got up from his chair and immediately noticed his partner's frightened expression — he knew something wasn't right, which triggered his protective side.

He wrapped his arms around Ulana, feeling her pounding heartbeat once their bodies met.

He gently caressed the woman’s cheek as an attempt to soothe her before leaning in for a kiss, and that's when Uatu finally noticed the red mark on her otherwise pale skin.

His girlfriend had been slapped on the face.

“......O-Oh, darling…” He cupped her face, while staring into her swollen, watery eyes. “You don't have to explain anything, please stay for as long as you like…”

He thought for a few minutes while holding her, to comfort her in any way possible, and he had an idea. “Dear, how about I have you seated and make some hot chocolate… then I can comfort you some more…” Ulana nodded, before being led to the couch and being brought a few blankets.

Uatu spent some time in the kitchen using rich chocolate in the drink, topping it with whipped cream and caramel. Before serving it to his beloved, whose eyes glowed with comfort as the flavor reached her taste buds.

The man soon slipped under the blankets and held her protectively as she enjoyed her drink.

She soon finished and put the mug on the coffee table and nuzzled into her beloved boyfriend. His touch comforted her, especially because of what happened that day.

“It was Verka….” She whispered to him, her voice shaky and nervous.

“Verka hit you?”

“Y-Yes, but I… I shouldn't have lost my mind and offended her like that and-”

“...Ulana. I understand where you're coming from.” Uatu took her hand and gently kissed it, before offering his girlfriend another hug. “However no one should be allowed to hurt you like that, not even your own sister…”

The woman felt her entire body melt in his arms; it was comforting, soothing. She gazed at her beloved with huge pearly white eyes, the tear streams were barely noticeable at this point. She let out a faint but genuine smile before going for a kiss.

“I love you, my shared heart.”

“I love you as well, Ulana. I'd do anything for you…” Another embrace ensued; it lasted for a long while until Uatu got up from the couch — still holding her in his arms. “...You should probably get some rest, my dearest.”

The woman nodded, agreeing on being carried by her partner all the way to his bedroom.

She was soon tucked in bed, before Uatu quickly went out of the room to get a few extra blankets and pillows, returning in no time.

The soft objects were arranged around his girlfriend, with the man being finally allowed to join her on the bed and cuddle her.

He held her protectively, kissing the top of her head and caressing her body lovingly.

Soon, they both fell asleep, not knowing where to go from there.

After a few days, they both decided she was going to stay there permanently, and snuck to her old home late at night to gather her things. They were caught by Mirra, who instead of alerting someone, helped them out and let them leave.

Verka later punished her for helping them by refusing to help her get treatment until she moved into her own home, which she was still working to get the funds for.

But it was hard when she had a chronic illness.

————-

Looking back on that day, which Ulana did constantly, she knew that Verka was a toxic woman who was manipulating and controlling of her siblings.

Years have passed since Ulana finally left, but she still felt particularly bad for leaving Mirra behind. Thankfully, however, they were still able to keep in touch, exchanging messages on a daily basis.

…But now, the damage had already been done.

The woman had tears welling up in her eyes, summoned by all the bad memories from ages ago, and felt the need to leave the room for a while to unwind.

Since his sister-in-law had Uris happily nestled in her arms, Uatu was able to escort his beloved wife outside.

Speaking of Verka, guess who walked through the door a few minutes later…

The woman entered Mirra’s room without even knocking on the door; she carried a fancy chocolate box and quietly walked towards her younger sibling, proudly holding her head high and overlooking Ursa’s existence.

“My… Beloved sister, I've heard the news and-”

Her speech was interrupted once Verka noticed the small child Mirra held in her arms.

…Uris.

A single glance was more than enough for Verka to notice how much that creature resembled Uatu… It couldn't be!!!

Was it…

Ulana's child???

She noticed a man in the room, it must have been him.

“YOU.” She yelled, grabbing the man’s shoulders and shaking him.

“HOW DARE YOU DEFLOWER MY SISTER, AND PRODUCE THAT…. THAT THING? YOU ARE A MONSTER, A FOWL CREATURE, AND I WILL MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IN MY POWER THAT YOU HAVE A HORRIBLE-“

Before she could finish, the yelling made Uris begin to bawl in Mirra’s arms.

And soon, in came Ulana and the actual Uatu.

…who was she yelling at then?

She turned back to the frightened man and let him go, he was shaking with a shocked look on his face!

He didn't even know Ulana had another sister! The poor man was startled and felt his heart pounding, it was like it could stop beating at any given moment. Ursa was still dizzy and struggled to breathe, how was one supposed to react to Verka's vile insults?

He soon rushed out of the room, looking for a safe place. Uatu left as well, to help his own sibling calm down, leaving the three women alone.

Ulana immediately took her terrified child and attempted to soothe the baby by rocking him from side to side — it worked like a charm.

Uris quickly returned to his aunt’s cozy arms, before his mother turned to face Verka.

“Why would you yell at my husband’s brother?”

“HUSBAND? You two didn’t-“

“Elope? We did. I love him, Verka, along with our child, and everyone else in our family…”

“…except you.”

Verka was furious, she couldn’t believe her ears, her own sister defending such a rebellious thing. She raised her hand up, quickly, Ulana flinching, knowing exactly what she was going to attempt.

And wouldn’t stand for it.

She caught her sister’s hand and pusher her to the ground, before hitting the button to call the nurse to the room.

A nurse soon arrived and Ulana was quick to tell her about what happened, and Verka was soon asked to leave.

Both Ulana and Mirra were still shocked and needed a few minutes to recover from what had just happened.

“I… Oh, Ulana… Verka wasn't… Supposed to be here!!! I never told her I had been sent to the hospital, I…”

Ulana sat on the chair next to her sister's bed, placing a hand on her shoulder before taking her beloved son back. “...She always finds a way… But do not worry, Mirra, we're safe now.”

The lady gazed at her child, softly caressing his head with her long, warm fingers. Uris, her own child… She couldn't believe Verka spoke such awful things about him, her perfect son! He was lovely, just like her husband…

Speaking of him, Uatu soon returned to his sister-in-law’s room, taking a quick look around before bringing Ursa back as well.

He was calm, holding Orion, his jackalope plushie, close to him. Ursa still seemed a bit frightened, but was soothed enough to take his seat.

Uatu and Ursa were told all about what happened, and couldn’t believe it, they ultimately decided that it wasn’t safe for Mirra to stay with her, so they offered her a place to stay at their house once she was discharged from the hospital. And they would help her get the funds to live independently when she could.

She wouldn’t be discharged for about a week, so there was plenty of time to prepare for her moving in.

————

It had been 2 weeks since the incident, and Mirra was adjusting just fine to her temporary home. The best part, in her opinion, was being able to spend more time with Uris!

Ursa was also adjusting to the change, slower than usual, but he was able to find a way around it whenever there was an issue.

Ulana was happy to live with her sister once again, it was wonderful! Besides, Uris seemed to love her as well.

Another tiring, but fun day had come to an end. After making sure everything was in order, Ulana finally headed to her bedroom, where she was warmly welcomed by her husband — who had just returned from his child's room.

She joined him and was quickly tucked in. Uatu smiled at her before going for a kiss, pulling his beloved partner closer.

They cuddled close, enjoying each other's warmth, Ulana especially.

Snuggling with him always comforted her, his soft skin, herbal masculine scent, large frame, it all combined to make a comfortable experience.

Ulana looked up at her husband with soft eyes, she would love him eternally and until all the stars fell from the sky. And Uatu felt the same. He loved her and his family more than anything in the multiverse.

And it was all that was needed at that moment.

Chapter 9: Flashback - “Sweet Victory”

Summary:

Ulana and Uatu finally get results after months of trying for something special…

Chapter Text

Last night was indeed passionate.

But almost every night between the couple was like that, they've been trying for a child for a few months after all. To the point where it was basic routine in their home on the blue side of the moon.

They had even recently eloped as well!

Ulana was safely in her husband’s arms, bare, yet warm under the thick blankets and soft skin of her beloved. She was to first to wake up after feeling a pain in her stomach.

She wriggled in Uatu’s arms, trying to find a position that helped soothe the pain, which caused Uatu to begin to wake up.

He let out a silent yawn before opening his eyes and glancing at his wife, where he instantly noticed her not feeling too well.

“Good morning, my Ulana… are you feeling alright?”

The woman couldn't hear him at first, she was too focused on relieving the pain. However, Ulana soon noticed the blue glow illuminating the back of her hands, and quickly turned around to face her partner — whose bright, concerned eyes were still fixed on her.

“...Oh, Uatu!! Good morning, I apologize for waking you up……”

The man came even closer to his wife and planted a kiss on her right cheek. “Is there anything bothering you?” He asked before taking her hands into his own.

The lady took a quick glance at her stomach, and then at her husband, putting up a wide grin that lasted for a few seconds. “I woke up with abdominal pain…”

“T-That’s…!!! …Oh, Ulana, what a way to wake up!! I will prepare breakfast and bring you an analgesic, my dearest!!!”

They kissed, which lasted a second, before Uatu got out of bed and put on a robe, before leaving the room to prepare breakfast.

Ulana, also got up to make herself decent, but went back to bed when the pain started once more.

She wasn’t bothered by it though, she was actually more excited.

For watchers, extreme pain in the stomach was the sign of a successful conception of a child. So this could very well mean she was finally pregnant!

She put her hands on her stomach, hoping that this wasn’t just cramps or a stomach bug.

After a couple minutes of daydreaming, Uatu came back with a full tray of food.

Fresh fruit, eggs, toast, sliced avocado, and her favorite, halan sweet bugs, along with a glass of tea and a pain relieving pill.

It was all she wanted! And she let go of a soft smile as the tray was put on her lap and she began to feast.

Uatu joined her on the bed and was immediately offered a fresh orange — which he gladly accepted.

He observed as his beloved eagerly devoured the meal he had brought her, until there was nothing left on the tray.

The man gently took the silver object and placed it on the nightstand. He was surprised once he felt a warm embrace coming from Ulana, but still returned the hug.

She was pulled in for yet another passionate kiss that lasted for a very long time. Their faces gradually drifted apart, and their lips morphed into beautiful bright smiles.

Uatu took her in his arms once again, tenderly pressing against her body. He gazed out the window, lost in his own thoughts whilst rocking his wife from side to side.

The motion finally came to an end as soon as he noticed a few graceful, slender fingers caressing his face.

“Uatu, love of mine… You'll never know how grateful I am for having you in my life!” Ulana smiled at her husband, who responded with a sweet peck on the lips.

“You neither, Ulana, my heart only has room for you… but I suppose I could make some room inside for…” he glanced at her stomach.

“Do you really think this abdominal pain could be it?”

Ulana nodded, knowing where this conversation was going.

“I’m hoping… Oh how I dreamed about this forever… We could finally have a family! Our own child to care for and adore! And with the man I love more than anything as well! It would be a dream come true!”

“Well, my dear, I guess we need to get out the test and see if it’s really true!”

He quickly got up to grab the test. For watchers, there were many different pregnancy tests that could be used, saliva, urine, but he settled for the most reliable one they had, a blood test.

It worked by drawing blood by a small needle and putting it in a special glass, it would turn a color by the results. Red if negative, blue if positive.

When he got to the room, Ulana’s mood changed for excited to nervous.

She was scared of needles, after all.

Uatu placed the small box on the nightstand, opening it just enough to take the package insert out.

Ulana had already taken that type of pregnancy test before, but the couple still made sure to follow the same ritual every single time.

Once he finished reading it, the man put the paper back in the box. Before grabbing the needle, he headed towards his wife and pulled her into a tight embrace “You can do it, my love…”

The woman nodded before pulling away from the hug. She watched as her husband prepared the syringe, filling it with the sparkling pink substance that also came in the box, inside of a small container.

Ulana looked away whilst Uatu injected the substance into her upper arm. A few seconds passed and it was finally time for the second step: drawing her blood.

The process was quick and easy and soon the blood made it into the cup, where all they had to do now was wait for the results.

Ulana had a serious look on her face, and Uatu knew exactly what the problem was.

She was scared of the possibility of it being negative.

Sadly, her nightmare would come true as the cup slowly turned a ruby red.

She turned away and began to sob.

Uatu locked his gaze on her — he too was disappointed, but couldn't imagine how heartbreaking it must have been for his wife…

“My love…” He followed Ulana as she made her way back to the bed, sitting beside her. He moved his hand up and down her back, slowly, unsure how to lighten up her gloomy mood.

Their eyes finally met, Ulana’s glistening amidst the tears.

She was eventually pulled into her husband's arms, who was still pondering the perfect words to soothe her.

“Don't worry, my dear, it's fine… We can always try again until we have a lovely child resting on our arms…”

It worked, and the tears gradually stopped flowing down her cheeks.

“I will always love you, and you're aware of that.” His hand moved to the back of her head, and gently stroked it. “...I adore you, Ulana.”

Ulana leaned into her husband, nuzzling into the crook of his neck and kissing it.

Uatu smiled softly before his eyes darted around the room, until he noticed the pregnancy test box, and some black writing on it.

He scooched closer and by further inspection, it revealed an expectation date that had been passed weeks ago!

Ulana glanced at it once her husband passed her the box and she quickly hugged him tight. A soft smile of hope growing on her face.

“We must get a new test immediately!!!” She exclaimed, happy at their second chance. And they soon went on her communicator and ordered from an intergalactic pharmacy, which arrived within an hour.

Ulana rushed to open the box and didn’t need Uatu’s help with injecting with the needle in her other arm before drawing some blood to put into the cup.

The couple attentively inspected the cup as its components danced from side to side, eventually blending into a new tone:

Navy blue.

Uatu took the cup in his hands, incredulous. His beloved wife was pregnant!!! He turned to face his partner, whose wide, pearly eyes remained unwavering.

Once she met her husband's gaze, Ulana hugged him tighter than she ever had before, breaking down in tears.

“U-Uatu, I… We… We did it!!! Our own child, who I'm very grateful for…”

Uatu returned the embrace, tears of joy rolling across his cheeks as well. He knew things would finally work out for him and Ulana someday!

He pulled away from the hug and moved both hands down to his wife’s stomach, caressing it gently.

“My dearest child…” He kissed her belly, before nuzzling it. “...Whoever you are, your mother and father love you endlessly. We cannot wait to finally meet you… Our baby…”

Chapter Text

Ulana had just picked up Uris out of his crib and had teleported to the bathhouse to give him and herself a bath.

They had spent about 20 minutes splashing around, interacting with Uris’ various bath toys, and it all had an overall soothing atmosphere.

The baby was scrubbed by his mother with some liquid, lavender soap, when she noticed something on his leg.

A white patch of skin.

This was out of the ordinary, since Uris had light brown skin, being a mix of his father’s dark skin and his mother’s pale skin.

Despite being confused, Ulana still tried to maintain her composure.

Uris didn't notice his mother’s concern — he was too busy enjoying all the iridescent bubbles floating around him.

A few minutes passed, and the purpleish soap foam was finally rinsed off his body. Ulana took her delicate son out of the water, wrapping a soft towel around his body.

She soon teleported back to Uris’ bedroom. The baby was placed on the crib for a moment while his mother retrieved an adorable navy blue onesie with a star print from his wardrobe.

While dressing her baby boy, Ulana couldn't help but notice all the small white patches scattered all over his skin.

She needed to tell her husband as soon as possible, because she thought she knew the answer.

After a couple minutes of playing with him in his playpen, she picked him up and checked the time, it was about time for her husband to be done with observations.

Ulana and Uris waited outside the observation room, where out came Uatu, and his brother, Ursa, who swiftly walked to his room to take a nap.

Uatu, on the other hand, realized something was up and motioned for his wife to follow him to the bedroom to talk about it.

Ulana quickly nodded before teleporting to Uris’ room once again to tuck in him for a nap.

She kissed his forehead before leaving the room via teleportation, her destination being her and Uatu’s bedroom.

Uatu quickly patted the other side of the bed and let her sit down beside him.

“What seems to be troubling you, my beloved?”

“I apologize, Uatu, I didn't mean to worry you.” She snuggled up to him, resting her head on her husband's shoulder. “Well…”

Uatu stared at her, attentively. Those talks usually made him anxious, but he had to be strong for his wife — and child.

“...I was giving our beloved son a bath and… Oh, my love! I believe Uris’ skin has the same lovely white patches as yours.”

Those words echoed in his mind for what seemed like eternity. Uatu closed his eyes for a brief second, snapping out of his thoughts.

He reflected about Uris' condition and it made total sense — both Uatu's siblings and late mother had vitiligo as well!

Uatu was able to keep it hidden, as it was mainly on his chest and legs. Ulana only found out about it when they first began to try for a child, much to Uatu’s embarrassment.

Usagi, his twin sister, was practically albino from it, and wore large hats and dresses to hide it, while Ursa would hide the patches on his face and arms with makeup sometimes, but he didn’t like the texture of makeup nor the feeling of it on his face, so he rarely did so.

He could not help but still be ashamed of his appearance and the fact he passed it to his son, though.

His wife noticed his sad expression and nuzzled into his neck, kissing his cheek softly.

“I adore you, my love, just as much as our Uris. I will say this again like the night I discovered this about you, but you are beautiful just the way you are…” she kissed him again, before pulling him in for an embrace.

Uatu felt her warm touch against his skin, and suddenly everything was okay again.

“Oh, Ulana…” He returned the embrace and tenderly stroked his beloved’s back, while letting her rest on his chest. “My other… I am grateful to have you in my life, I… I don't know what I'd do without you…”

“Uatu…” The woman initiated yet another kiss, and stared at her husband with two sparkling, heavenly eyes once it inevitably came to an end. “...We were meant to be.”

Uatu pulled her closer, and their eyes finally met. He gazed at her, awestruck — Ulana was the most wonderful wife he could've asked for.

This sweet moment lasted for a while until they were unfortunately interrupted by a certain sound coming from Uris' room…

…He was crying.

“...Don't worry, my love. I'll return shortly.” Uatu kissed her on the forehead before getting up. He teleported to his son’s bedroom, and immediately approached the baby.

He picked up the sobbing baby and hugged him tight.

He didn’t need a changing, so Uatu assumed it was just a nightmare.

“Shh… I’m here now, my son…” Uris clinged to his robes tighter, trying to keep his eyes open, until Uatu eventually caved in and set him in his playpen.

He sat down in it as well, coaxing his son into interacting with the many toys he owned. Mainly a toy xylophone, but the boy seemed… distracted.

…He was staring at his foot, which as Ulana had mentioned he had white patches, was completely white, contrast to his light brown skin.

Uatu frowned, hated seeing his son like this, he would usually ignore but he remembered what his beloved wife said…

“You are beautiful just the way you are.”

He let go of a small smile, as revealed his own foot, which coincidentally, was also partially white.

Uris let go of an adorable shocked face, before putting his white foot against his father’s, in awe that his father was just like him.

Other than being surprised, he was more than overjoyed!

Uris squealed with delight, he wouldn't stop smiling at his father!

Uatu gladly picked him up and pulled his beloved son into another tight hug. “Your parents will always love you, my dearest…”

The man angled his head down to face his child — Uris still had an adorable smile plastered across his face, which he had inherited from his mother!

The man caressed that small face that looked just like his own. Months had passed since Uris was born, and both Uatu and Ulana still found it difficult to believe that they finally had their own child, their own family!

His thoughts were soon interrupted by a soft yawn. The young boy wasn't giggling anymore — instead, he rubbed his tired eyes before turning back to his father.

He was given a forehead kiss before being put down in his crib for the night.

“Goodnight, my son, the universe shall wait for you to wake up…” He wound up his son’s mobile and turned on his night light before moving away from the crib.

Uatu walked out of the room — just to bump into his brother, who was seemingly watching them from the crack of the door.

“OH! I-I’m sorry… I heard crying but you were there first… I couldn’t help but witness you showing Uris your markings….”

“You are fine… do not worry!”

As much as he wished to return to his wife, Uatu knew his sibling was waiting for him to say something else.

“You see, Ursa, I… I just wanted Uris to know that I love and understand him… And there's nothing to be ashamed of, correct…?”

“...Uatu.” A stern looking Ursa stared at his younger brother, whose head hung low. “...Our condition embarrasses you more than any other wound or scar. And I'm aware of that.”

There was an attempt to look away, but Uatu couldn't bring himself to do it. Ursa was right, and they both knew it.

“I have to be strong… And accept it… For him.”

Ursa was exhausted from having those talks — back when Uatu and Usagi were children, it was his role as a father figure to guide and comfort his younger siblings, teaching them whatever they were required to know.

Usagi had always been a strong lady. Indifferent to other people's opinions, she preferred to focus her mind on what was truly worth her precious time.

Uatu, on the other hand…… Oh, that poor child…

Even now, as a grown up married adult with a family, he still found it difficult to talk about his condition. It's been years since he last discussed it with someone, but Ursa knew those feelings hadn't gone away…

“Uatu, if you want to love your son, you must love yourself first… I would have done the same if… he had our condition.”

He was correct, Aron did not have vitiligo at all! Ursa secretly considered him lucky, although his son used to get teased for his father’s odd appearance. Which caused his ego to grow, stating he was “better” than his father, uncle, and aunt for not having their “curse”.

“I apologize, Ursa, I hope I did not bring back any bad memories of our past…”

“No, brother, it’s alright, you have a family that loves you for who you are… all you need is to love yourself.”

There was an awkward silence, before Ursa scurried back to his room.

Uatu felt guilty for bringing up the topic again, he knew it made his sibling uncomfortable.

Disheartened, the man walked down the hallway, overwhelmed by a zillion thoughts racing through his head. There ought to be something he could do to make up for tonight's episode. He thought about purchasing a gift, but Ursa wasn't particularly fond of surprises…

Before he could come up with another idea, Uatu heard Ulana’s voice speaking to him.

“......What's taking you so long, my love? Is there anything I should be concerned about?”

“...Do not worry, my beloved Ulana… I will teleport back to you in a few minutes…”

The man quickened his pace, but soon realized that simply teleporting to the kitchen was much easier.

Upon his arrival, Uatu swept across the place, gathering his wife's favorite snacks. The food was carefully arranged on a silver tray, and the watcher was finally allowed to return to his bedroom.

Ulana was sitting on the bed expectantly, like she was waiting for eons. “What took you so long? Did Uris need a changing, I know how slow you are with that…” she said in concern, but her husband was soon to reply with “Do not worry, I come bearing snacks for you to make up for it.” He handed her the silver platter, she quickly grabbed some chocolate covered crickets, she loved her bugs!

She savored the taste of the exoskeleton-clad creatures, especially feeling satisfied with their crunch.

After a while, though, she stopped being distracted and grew a concerned face once again.

“Uatu, be honest with me, did something happen?”

He paused, he could never lie to his beloved, so he really had no choice.

“Dear… I keep thinking about my… condition. Uris was overjoyed when he discovered I also had markings on my foot. But Ursa saw everything… and I think I worried him with my low confidence on it, he was teased heavily for it, but he seems to be more confident with it then I will ever be…”

Ulana finished the platter and quickly rushed to embrace him.

“Oh, Uatu… My beloved! I can only imagine how difficult it must be for you, but I know you're capable of being just as confident as your brother! You're beautiful just the way you are…” She placed a light kiss on her husband's cheek, before resting her head in the crook of his neck. “...And the same goes for our adored child!”

Uatu smiled whilst running his fingers up and down his beloved's back. “Ulana, dear… I’m glad fate brought us together!”

The woman lifted her head and met his lovely, jolly eyes. It only lasted a brief moment, as the man soon broke eye contact and pulled his wife even closer.

Ulana returned the smile despite knowing he couldn't see her face.

She finally felt at peace.

The lady made herself comfortable in Uatu's arms, enjoying his soothing warmth. She gently caressed his cheek, which prompted the man to tilt his head down just enough to face his partner again.

He couldn't take his pearly eyes off her — Ulana’s energy was contagious, and her dazzling smile outshone even the brightest stars.

“I love you, darling…”

The couple exchanged glances one last time. Comforted by each other's presence, both Uatu and Ulana soon fell asleep with a beautiful image of their small, but lovely family engraved in their minds…
