Chapter 1: the secrets out

Chapter Text

“Isabela wasn’t happy-”

“Of course she's unhappy. You ruined her proposal”

“No, no. She needed me to ruin her proposal and then we did all this and the candle burned brighter and the cracks-”

“Mirabel”

“-That's why I’m in the vision. I’m saving the miracle-”

“You have to stop Mirabel!”

“The cracks started with you. Bruno left because of you. Luisa's losing her powers. Isabelas out of control. Because of you!”

That was when Mirabel felt her pupils sharpen, the shadows from the late afternoon disappearing from her sight and her glasses stinging her eyes.

“I don’t know why you weren’t given a gift but it is not an excuse for you to hurt this family”

Mirabel sighed, remembering her advantage in the situation as she looked over at her sisters watching with misery, fear and sadness in their eyes.

She sighed, making her decision. She was done hiding. And she was done holding back.

“No”

Almas face showed confusion behind her anger.

“The cracks started with you. Tio left because of you. Luisas overworked because of you. Isabelas depressed because of you. Every bad thing that happened to this family since Abuelo Pedro died is because of you” Mirabel spoke, her humans ears disappearing in favor of wolf ones, matching the tail sprouting beneath her dress.

“I don’t know why you never figured out my power but it is not an excuse for you to hurt my family” her hands turned to wolf paws as she ran them through her curls, taking off her glasses as she did so.

She took a shaky breath, glancing over at Luisa as she gave a small nod.

“Bruno loves this family. I love this family. We all love this family. You're the one who doesn’t care. You're the one breaking our home!” she gestured to her family, who had come when they heard the commotion.

Alma was too shocked to reply.

“The miracle is dying because of YOU!” Mirabel shouted, uncaring of her cousins hearing in the moment.

She heard Pepa gasp as a crack formed between Mirabel and Alma.

“No, no, no!” the same woman exclaimed, holding up her arms in a panic.

“The candle!” Felix spoke when the crack spread up the wall closer to the heart of their miracle.

The windowsill snapped as Casita shook.

Mirabel, fueled by adrenaline and a release of what she’d kept secret for years, ran across the courtyard as she dropped her glasses.

“Casita! Get me up there!” she shouted, the house obeying by bringing down the railing to act as a ladder.

She quickly climbed it, not noticing her cousin running past his door trying to get up to the candle as well, jumping and ducking under obstacles.

Mirabel used her increased agility to jump up onto the roof as Isabela tried to swing up with a vine, only to fail when her door cracked and the vine snapped.

Isabela rolled down as Casita pushed out support beams, landing on the cracking tiles as Mirabel tried to grab the candle and Camilo jumped up, failing to reach the roof as well as his gift disappeared.

He caught the railing as Casita bent it down, letting him land safely on the courtyard floor next to his cousin.

Casita lifted her tiles, helping Mirabel get closer to the candle.

She glanced away to see the mountain crack as the candle slipped from her paws, rolling into the room.

Animals burst out of Antonios fading door as Mirabel fully transformed into a wolf, bending over the windowsill.

“Careful Antonio!” Felix exclaimed, grabbing his son just before a chest of drawers could land on him.

“We gotta get out of here!” he shouted, holding Antonio as he ran out of a crumbling Casita.

“Mirabel! Mirabel!” the girl in question was focused on grabbing the candle with her paws as she heard Casita push her mother towards the front doors.

“Mirabel! We have to get out!” her father shouted.

Giving up trying to grab the candle with her paws, Mirabel grabbed it with her teeth, feeling it starting to drain something inside her in a desperate attempt to survive.

She heard the faint sound of a wall crashing and someone letting out a yell.

Mirabel made eye contact with her tio as she pulled herself out of the room and he pushed his bucket up from his face.

Mirabel jumped down from the roof and rushed out the doors, sweeping into a position close to a ball in a desperate attempt to shield the people in front of her from the destruction.

Crash

“Mirabel…” was all Julieta could say, everyone else speechless.

Mirabel looked at her mother before dropping the piece of wax like a small puppy that was guilty for holding their ball for too long.

The moment the candle landed on the grass, Mirabel shifted to about half-way between wolf and human.

The familia stood in silence for a few moments, the only sound being Mirabels uneven breath.

“Mirabel?” Dolores shouted, making the brother next to her wince.

Mirabel glanced towards her cousin then the somehow still alight candle on the ground before shifting full wolf again and running into the woods.

“Mirabel!” Pepa cried at a similar volume to her daughters.

When Mirabel unshifted, she was at a river, filled with red tinted flora flowing through it.

She was back to a fully human form again, feeling exhausted in a way she’d never experienced before.

“Why did I get this…” she mumbled.

She could barely see a thing because of losing her glasses in the fall and she couldn’t change her eyes to fix it because of the strange exhaustion.

“Why was I cursed to be like this!?” she cried.

She stood up, wobbling from the regular exhaustion.

She walked over to the nearest tree and attempted to do something she’d done frequently when she first got her powers.

“Ah!” she hissed when her skin was scratched off by the trees bark.

She kicked it before sitting down next to the river.

Mirabel sighed in defeat before she curled up, attempting a position she’d done many times in wolf form, and fell asleep.

Chapter 2: Julieta POV

Chapter Text

Julieta was cooking in the kitchen late at night as she always did. She knew her husband would wake up, realize she isn't in bed and come get her at some point but until then she was cooking to help the town.

Casita tapped her tiles at the womans foot, her way of gently asking her to go to bed.

"I'll go to bed when Agustin realizes I'm not in bed. He always realizes" she responded.

A whimper from behind took her attention from the dough on the bench.

She turned to see a puffball of something sitting in the kitchen entrance.

"What is that?" Julieta muttered, squinting her eyes in an attempt to see. The only light in the kitchen was a lantern on the shelf next to her head.

The puffball suddenly stood up and walked closer, revealing it to be a small pup with curious brown eyes.

"Casita why did you let a dog pup in here?" Julieta asked the house, her sleep-deprived brain assuming the pup to be a dog.

Casita didn't respond as the pup walked up to her, giving another whimper of confusion.

The pup suddenly grabbed the hem of her skirt in its mouth and began walking out of the kitchen.

Not wanting to rip her skirt and there being nothing in the oven, Julieta followed the pup out of the kitchen and through the courtyard.

She was very confused when the puppy guided her to the stairs.

"Are you taking me to bed" Julieta jokingly asked.

She laughed when the pup replied with a yip of conformation.

They walked silently up the stairs, past Dolores, Camilo, Pepa and Almas doors until they reached Julietas.

"Okay, you can leave now" Julieta spoke, the pup letting go of her skirt as she opened the door.

The pup didn't obey, instead running into the room as soon as the door was opened wide enough.

Julieta looked over at the bed to see Agustin sitting up, still half-asleep.

"I was just about to come get you" he commented.

"Yeah. Casita let a puppy in and it brought me here" Julieta replied as she got into bed, not bothering to change into her nightgown.

"What?" Agustin said in confusion.

Julieta was asleep before she could reply.

---

The next morning Julieta had awoke to Mirabel curled up between her and Agustin.

For the next 4 years that's how it went every full moon.
Every time a pup, one Julieta soon realized was actually a wolf instead of a dog, would appear in Casita and drag her to bed by her skirt, then she'd wake up the next morning to find Mirabel asleep with her and Agustin.
Eventually she was expecting the pup to come every full moon instead of her husband.
But then the visits from the pup abruptly stopped and Mirabel stopped sleeping with Julieta and Agustin.

She was confused and partially concerned for the wolf pup for weeks before she eventually forgot about it, the memories of the pup being buried by more serious worries.
Until the memories came back to the surface, joined with concerns for who the pup truly was.

---

"Oh my god" Julieta whispered once Mirabel had run out of her sight into the woods.

"Mirabel was that pup" she continued.

"What pup?" Camilo asked.

"For 4 years a wolf pup would sneak into the house every full moon and drag me to bed by my skirt. Every time I'd wake up the next day to Mirabel sleeping with me and Agustin. How did I never figure it out?" Julieta explained, internally panicking as everything clicked into place.

"You could've never figured it out" Agustin comforted, putting his hand on her shoulder.

"Didn't you say all her allergies and extra energy were from your family? How do we know she didn't get this wolf thing from your family?" Julieta questioned, turning to her husband.

"Well maybe she got it from me but if it was from my family, I never knew. My family never told me. None of us could've known this would happen. I don't understand why she didn't tell anyone either" Agustin replied.

"She told me" Luisa spoke up, wringing her hands.

Chapter 3: Luisas POV

Chapter Text

Luisa woke up to Casita tapping repeatedly at her door.

She reluctantly got up from her large bed and came down the stone steps to check what Casita needed.

When she opened her door, Casita flipped her tiles, leading to the nursery.

Luisa followed the path, shocked when she opened her sisters door, she didn't expect what she saw.

"No, no, no! Why is this happening? This is only supposed to happen on full moons!" Mirabel was too distracted by her changing appearance to notice Luisa in the doorway.

Mirabel was sitting on the floor, scrambling as she tried to hide the wolf features growing on her. Her human ears were already replaced with wolf ones, her hands were replaced with paws and a wolf tail was actively growing from her tailbone. Her glasses were left on the bedside table while her eyes were sharp and tinted a soft gold.

"Mirabel?" Luisa spoke, getting her sisters attention.

In a blur, Mirabel turned into a full wolf pup with fear embedded in her eyes.

"You can turn into a puppy!" Luisa quietly squealed.

Before Mirabel could run past her, Luisa sweeped her up into her arms.

Luisa pelted her sisters furry face in affectionate kisses as she brought her to her room.

She paid no mind when the puffball of black fur that was now her sister scowled at the house, whose floor tiles were lightly rattling in an imitation of laughter.

Luisa brought Mirabel into her room.

"You're so cute!" she cooed.

Mirabel flipped over out of Luisas arms and tried to run out the door, only for Casita to shut it.

Mirabel barked at the door, uncaring of her sisters confusion.

"Do you want a treat?" Luisa asked, kneeling down.

Mirabel stopped barking at 'treat'.

She stared at her sister with a look of clear disgust, even in her wolf form.

Luisa laughed at the pups face.

Mirabel sneezed an adorable sneeze, suddenly turning back to how Luisa had found her, with her tail fully out.

"I'm not an actual dog Lulu" Mirabel rolled her eyes while her sister burst out laughing.

"How long has this been going on?" Luisa asked.

Mirabel sighed.

"Usually I transform only on a full moon and can't turn back until its like 3 in the morning. But for some reason tonight I turned despite it being a half moon. Its been happening since my gift ceremony" she explained, lying on the stone floor of Luisas room.

"Well you're adorable as a wolf!" Luisa commented, tapping her sister on the nose.

Mirabel sneezed again and turned back into her wolf form.

Luisa laughed again.

---

After that night Mirabel figured out she could suddenly turn into a wolf at will, although she still had the full moon routine as well.
During every full moon she'd come to Luisas room and sleep with her. On some other nights she'd either come to Luisas room and practice her 'form-changing' as they called it or run into the woods in wolf form and map out the woods in her head in case of danger.

Their already strong sibling bond grew stronger from the shared secret. Mirabel explained how her form-changing hurt for the first few years, getting comfort from her sister when it hurt again during her growth spurt at 12.

When Mirabel came to her asking what had her so troubled and explaining how she was trying to save the miracle, Luisa broke down and vented about her struggles. She then gave Mirabel advice about where to go next before continuing her chores, panicking when she suddenly felt weaker an hour later.

---

"She told me" Luisa spoke up, wringing her hands.

"What?" Dolores muttered.

"I-I walked in on her form-turning when I was 13. It was her first time form-turning without a full moon. She explained it to me once she turned back to her human form. Its kind of been our secret ever since" Luisa explained.

"Why didn't you tell us!?" Alma practically shouted.

"She told me about the stories of people killing werewolves and didn't want to risk it so I decided not to tell anyone! It wasn't dangerous for her anyway. Minus that time a wolf harassed her..." the 19-year-old defended.

"Did Casita know?" Isabela thought aloud.
