In the moonlight, the white horse glows like jade. From the hollow of the tree, Kan Jian watches them come. The hunt spills over the moor like a fog-bank, flowing and parting around and over obstacles only to reform on the other side and move relentlessly on. Even more than the moonlight, they carry their own light with them, ghostly fire that flashes from striking hoof and eye of hound and lingers in the corners where shadows should be. Among the horses he sees branching antlers, and the flash of scales and fur on other things that are not horses anymore, if they ever were. The riders are as richly caparisoned as their steeds, gold and jewels and silk and velvet, their hair and capes flowing in the wind of their passage.

They are silent at first…
