Chapter 1
A spasm of pain traveled up Magnus’ spine as he carefully, but quickly, climbed back through the window that he had used to sneak into the mansion, and managed to quietly close it behind him right as Lorenzo came storming into the living room with Alec close at his heels.
With a shaky sigh, Magnus leaned back against the wall outside of the view from the pair and tried to wrap his mind around what he had just discovered. He knew it was going to be bad. Clearly, whatever was causing havoc around the city through the ley lines was a powerful being, but he never could have guessed this. They were going to need to call in some help with this one.
His hands were shaking as he recalled the rapid pulsing of the energy signatures, much stronger than anything he had ever felt before. At least he had the presence of mind to swallow his scream of surprise as he was thrown back against the wall. Little good that had done though. It felt like the whole building had shook from the impact, causing Lorenzo to come and investigate anyways.
Turning his head just enough to peek back inside the living room, Magnus caught sight of his boyfriend heading in the direction of the foyer with Lorenzo just a couple steps behind him, walking him out.
A low groan left Magnus’ lips as he stood up from the wall, sending another blast of pain through him. He sent a wave of magic over the injury to soothe his aching back before making his way around towards the front of the house, trying hard to keep his hands from shaking. Pausing briefly at the corner to make sure that Lorenzo had gone back inside, Magnus strolled over to meet Alec.
“What was going on down there?” was Alec’s greeting, which Magnus had to try hard not to groan at the memory of being sent airborne into the wall.
“We have a problem,” Magnus said with a frown.
Seeing the worry in the warlock’s eyes, Alec let out a soft sigh. “It is your father,” he guessed.
Magnus' mouth fell open as he tried to find the right words. He shook his head slightly before explaining. “There wasn’t just one energy signature. We’re dealing with two Greater Demons. One of them is my father, yes, but the other . . . This magic is very old and very evil. The demon responsible is as powerful as they come. Not like anything I’ve ever seen before.”
“So, along with dealing with Asmodeus, we have someone worse that he has teamed up with?”
Magnus nodded. “Yeah, much worse.”
Alec swallowed nervously as he turned away from Magnus’ worried stare. “We need to get back to the Institute then. We need to update everyone-”
“Alec, wait.” Magnus reached for his arm as Alec turned to leave. “It’s getting late. I doubt my father and his . . . friend will be causing anymore mischief today. Let's just go back to the loft and get some rest. We’ll deal with all of this in the morning.”
Alec must have noticed then how exhausted he felt, because he reluctantly nodded his head in agreement. “Yeah, okay. Do you want to portal us back?”
Magnus paused for a moment, considering this before shaking his head. “I used quite a bit of magic in there,” he said, nodding in the direction of Lorenze’s mansion. “It might be better if we walked back. Besides, there is something I need to talk to you about.”
