Space and The Comfort It Brings

Summary:

Vee put down the planet and began looking at other parts of the collection, she looked at Astro for permission to touch the planets and he gave a nod. She inspected almost everything there. Taking note of the way some were messier than others, looking at the care Astro most likely put into these. Sometimes she wished she had a collection like his. One moon caught her eye in particular, it wasn't special but she picked it up and looked at it before asking.

"Isn't this Iapetus? The one you've said is your favorite?"

Astro looked at it, "Yeah, I'm surprised you remember."

"Contrary to popular opinion I do listen to what my friends say."

Work Text:

"And that's all for today's gameshow segment, hope everyone enjoyed the show!"

She walked behind the curtain of the big stage she would showcase her shows on. Scraps had yet again won even with the new segment she had added, how had Scraps even known the hottest planet was 450 ° C! Vee believed there was no way she wasn't cheating, but Vee had no proof of it. She picked up the mini moon Astro had given her last week, he said it was one of his favorites from his collection but wanted Vee to have it because of her interest in it. There was a knock behind her and Vee turned around faced with Brightney standing in the middle of the entrance.

She sighed, "Brightney, you know there is no need to knock," She placed the mini moon softly on the desk in front of her before continuing, "There's not even a door, so I don't understand why you would knock."

Brightney let out a little nervous laugh, "Sorry, sorry Vee," She walked forward and stood a little aways from Vee, "It's just courtesy plus I wouldn't want you getting scared."

Vee gave the toon next to her a look, as if she could ever scare her, she's as subtle as Shelly when she's trying to hold a secret in or Pebble when he's trying to steal treats. Brightney sat on one of the couches nearby adjusting her glasses on her face. Vee went back to observing the mini moon Astro had recently given her. It was one of Saturn's moons, Iapetus, she had no idea why it was one of Astros favorites, but she did like the splotches of brown on it. She felt Brightney looking at her and turned around, Brightney realizing Vee's attention was on her seemingly remembered why she was here in the first place.

"Oh yes- I forgot I had a question to ask you." Vee tilted her head slightly prompting her to continue. "I just wanted to ask about your new space segment on the show, I had no idea you were into space."

"I have always been interested in space, but it was only recently I decided to add it to my gameshow."

Brightney smiled, "Space is a great topic for gameshows, no idea why you didn't add it earlier."

Before Vee could reply she suddenly remembered something, "Hey Brightney weren't you meant to watch Toodles today for Rodger?"

Brightney's eyes widened a little before she quickly jumped up from the couch, thanking Vee for reminding her before rushing out towards the elevator. Vee snickered a little watching her leave and let herself go back to what she was doing before. Her mind however went back to a little over a week ago. Veronica had told her about her possible upgrades, she still didn't understand why she was the only one who needed them; it just wasn't fair. That same night though she hadn't wanted to go to sleep. Vee had roamed the halls and let herself just calm down from the day. She found herself wondering about the stars. Space had always been something she had liked but she often was busy with other things to indulge in her interest. When her and Astro would talk, he would often talk about the constellations. He'd sometimes talk about what constellations could be seen that day or the stories behind them.

She found herself in front of Astros room soon. Her mind on autopilot must've brought her here, she decided to see if Astro was up, though she doubted it; she would be shocked if his spirit animal wasn't a sloth. Knocking on his door she was shocked to hear a soft come in. She pondered what he'd be doing up so late. Opening up the door and walking inside she was met with Astro sitting in front of his bookshelf on a bean bag chair. He patted the bean bag beside him before going back to reading his book, upon closer inspection it looked to be a book about the planets. She sat down sinking into the chair and letting herself get comfortable. Astro looked at her before putting his book down.

"Did you know neutron stars can spin 600 times per second?"

Vee looked at the toon next to her confused. Of course, she knew that fact she knew quite literally everything. Knowing everything felt like that was the only thing she was good for sometimes.

"Astro, yes I already knew that."

He hummed a little before saying, "Just an interesting fact I thought I'd share."

Vee went back to thinking before she felt Astro poke her arm and she slowly looked at him wondering what he needed. She saw him pick up a random book off his shelf, he floated it over to her and she grabbed it before reading the cover. A book about the constellations. Looking at Astro who was already back to reading his book, she let out a sigh. If she wasn't going to be sleeping might as well read this book. The silence was comforting as she felt herself relaxing more as she read more and more. Astro often had a calming effect about him; he was a great listener as well. He had often listened to Vee complain about Scraps constantly winning and how unfair it was. She looked around Astros room, there was a soft blue glow throughout it, but one thing caught her eye. Whenever she visited Astros room her eyes would often find his collection of space items. His collection ranged from mini versions of the moons of planets to the full solar systems. Astro looked up from his book to catch Vee looking at his collection again. He placed his book down and stood up walking towards his collection. Inviting Vee to come over and join him.

He picked up Saturn, "This one was my favorite to make," he began, "Austin often gives me art supplies and while I'm definitely not an artist- it's a nice hobby for when I'm bored."

Vee inspected the planet closer noticing the messy paint job Astro had done. Astro held it out to her and let her get a closer look.

"Well, I can definitely tell you're not an artist." Astro gave her a little glare and Vee held back a laugh.

"It was one of my firsts, I like to think I got better."

She looked back at it and wondered what was so special about it. It was just a moon with brown spots. She decided to ask that question later. Astro went back to his bean bag chair, picking up the book he had discarded earlier and went back to reading. Vee still stood there looking at the moon before deciding to place it back down heading back to her bean bag chair. She relaxed back into her chair and let herself just listen to the quiet in the room. It wasn't often Gardenview was quiet after all. Before she knew it she had already fallen asleep. When she woke up a blanket was placed on her and Astro was fast asleep in his bed. She got up and let her limbs stretch, even a robot needs to stretch she can't let herself get rusty. Silently walking over to Astro and gently shaking him she watched him groan a little before opening his eyes.

"Hey Astro, I'll be heading back to my room"

Astro nodded before getting up. He walked over to his collection and picked up Iapetus and handing it to her.

"Here, I saw you liked this one in particular."

He dropped it in Vees hands and watched her process what he'd just given her. Before she fully processed though he shooed her out the door. Much as he loved having her over, he loved his sleep much more. Vee stood outside Astros door looking at the moon Astro had given her. She walked back to her room and opened her door. Her room wasn't nearly as calming as Astros. She went over to her desk and placed the moon on the surface. She'd find out where to put it in the morning but now she was tired and wanted to sleep.
