Kiva's Cavalcade of DC Prompts: Captain Marvel

Summary:

Welcome to the Cavalcade of DC Prompts, a series where I note down small ideas for the DC Franchise.

Not a real reboot, just DC Ideas I don't want to forget, but store and share. Though it may slowly build for something.

And this entry is about a young man whom becomes a hero with a simple magic word...SHAZAM!

Chapter 1: The Marvel family monikkers

Notes:

This entry just shows shortly what the family looks like and what their monikkers are.

Chapter Text

First of all, it is the Marvel family. Not the Shazam family. What good is a superhero name if you can’t say it without triggering the transformation. To me it is Captain Marvel, and It will be how I refer to him in this reboot from now on.

They consist of:

Billy Batson/Captain Marvel – The foster child whom finally finds a home with the Vasquez family and becomes Captain Marvel after being granted the power by the Wizard Shazam.

Mary Bromfeld/Lady Marvel – In the New 52 she is Billy’s older foster sister instead of bio-sister. However, like the pre-New 52 she would later find out she and Billy are actually bio-siblings. She goes by the alias Lady Shazam because you don’t use your first name as a moniker.

Freddy Freeman/King Marvel – He used the alias King Marvel like in Kingdom Come because the ‘Jr.’ part doesn’t make sense since he’s not the Captain’s kid.

Eugene Choi/Doctor Marvel – Since he is the brainy tech whiz and he even gains technopathy upon being transformed, Doctor Marvel seems like the right name to emphasize his intelligence.

Pedro Peña/Lieutenant Marvel – I gave him the title of Lieutenant Marvel. There were a trio of minor Lieutenant marvels in the Golden Age of comics, so I make that reference with him.

Darla Dudley/Miss Marvel – Yeah, she is a little miss so I call her miss Marvel.

Victor Vasquez/Father Marvel and Rosa Vasquez/Mother Marvel – The loving foster parents to Billy and his siblings. On the rare occasion, especially in emergencies, Billy shared his powers with them. Again, it is not very common but they get monikers.

Dudley H. Dudley/Uncle Marvel – Here he is the bio-uncle of Darla. After his sister and brother-in-law passed, he didn’t have the funds to raise Darla. Luckily the Vasquez family allows him to visit her often. He has become a honorary uncle to the other kids as well. On the rare occasion he has become Uncle Marvel. This is my way to include Uncle Dudley, whom after the new 52 wasn’t included in the

TJ/Tawny Jr./Cat Marvel – The family’s pet cat, whom transforms into a super powered tiger familiar to Captain Marvel. He was named after Tawky Tawny, the anthropomorphic tiger that is an ally to the Marvels.

Chapter 2: Captain Thunder

Chapter Text

William ‘Willie’ Fawcett/Captain Thunder was created as a DC counterpart for Captain Marvel before they were able to acquire the character proper to officially make him a DC character.

In this universe, Willie Fawcett is Billy Batson’s predecessor during World War II, and would be fighting the Axis and other wartime enemies the Marvel family had during that era.

Since the original Captain Thunder doesn’t have a backstory, I gave him one. He was orphaned in the war, and was taken in by a kindly priest. He grew up as a nice and well mannered boy, one of great faith.

As the Wizard had bestowed powers of different Pantheons upon others, Greek/Roman for Billy and Egyptian for Black Adam, he bestows the power of angels in Christianity and Judaism.

The strength of Turiel, whom is known as ‘the Rock of God’.

The speed of Haniel, the ‘Grace of God’.

The burning courage of Uriel, the ‘Flaming Light of God’.

The endurance of Netzach, the Angel of Eternity

The wisdom of Danel, the teacher of ‘the signs of the sun’.

The wings of Exael, one of the Watcher Angels.

The power of Ramiel, Archangel of Thunder.

Chapter 3: Mr. Banjo

Summary:

Cap Marvel's early enemies aren't easy to reimagine

Chapter Text

Kurt Filpots aka Mr. Banjo…in the comics he was just a spy, a guy with a banjo whom uses said Banjo to transfer messages.

Here Mr. Banjo is a full on musical assassin. He can use his banjo to create soundwaves, he can play a tune that allows him to create minions from surrounding materials, and even rain down the elements, every song a different spell.

Taking away his trademark Banjo isn’t enough, because even without the banjo he just hums a tune and can attack. As long as he can make music, he can deal damage.

He has sold his soul to the demon Paimon, a demon of music, whom gives him his powers and longevity, in exchange for unleashing havoc on Earth. And sabotaging the war efforts so that there be more despair and evil for the demons of Hell to feed on is just fine.

He fought Captain Thunder during World War II, and has resurfaced in the present to torment the present-day Marvel family as well.

NOTES

-Yes, his portrayal is inpsired by Scaramouche from Samurai Jack

Chapter 4: WHIZ Media Group

Notes:

...STop laughing!

Chapter Text

The WHIZ Media Group is a reimagining of the WHIZ Radio, though a modern version of it. It not only deals with radio broadcasts, but news channels and Podcasts as well.

Billy Batson works at his place, where Billy does a podcast called ‘Truth from the Youth’, where Billy talks about the stories of kids in their daily lives, and how they don’t always have it easy. Billy hopes that way he can reach out to families, in the hopes they learn to listen and communicate and come together. It is also therapeutical for Billy as by talking about it, he slowly starts to grow closer to his new family and overcoming his own issues.

Sterling Morris – Owner of the WHIZ Media group, his family having founded it in WWII, when it was still a simple radio station. He is a benevolent boss whom treats his employees with respect and acts as a kind uncle to Billy.

Joan Jameson – A woman whom is Billy’s assistant, despite being older then him. Billy does the talk and put effort in the program, but Joan is the woman whom makes sure everything keeps running smooth behind the scenes. Equipment up to date, that everything gets started on time. She knows Billy is Captain Marvel but keeps it a secret out of respect for Billy, whom she sees as a nephew, or little brother.

Cissie Morris – Sterling’s daughter (his niece Cissie Sommerly in the comics), Billy Batson’s crush. She presents a weather segment on WHIZ TV’s WHIZ-Kids Channel. Her bubbly personality makes her ideal to bring the reports in a fun way.

Gwyneth Tate – A reporter for the WHIZ Media group. She seems to be completely unflappable, delivering all her reports in the same neutral, professional tone. Even when a fight breaks out near her. She would just report ‘…and it seems now Captain Marvel has engaged Oom the Mighty in a battle right behind me.’ As if she was talking about the weather.

Steamboat Bill – Samual Williams is an African-American chef whom works at the WHIZ Media Group’s building’s cafetaria. Retired military officer. Hails from New Louisiana and serves his Cajun soul foods at the cafetaria whom everyone loves.

Chapter 5: King Kull

Chapter Text

King Kull is an enemy of the Marvel family. In the comics he is portrayed as a former ruler of the "Submen", a brutish but technologically skilled humanoid race that ruled over early man until being overthrown in a sudden revolution.

In my universe King Kull is a Cro-Magnon, simply known as Kull and he is the son of Vandal Savage. In fact he is one of Vandal’s first children and his oldest surviving child.

He has inherited his father’s longevity and has over the years assisted him in his ploys. He has been put in charge in finding a way to claim the power of Shazam for the Light, by reaching out to Black Adam, try to find a way into the Rock of Eternity or join the Monster Society as a representative of the Light.

Despite his age, he can still give in to his  brutish caveman impulses and is overcome with a desire to smash. When he can suppress those, he is shown to be clever, cunning, as well as a technological genius. It’s just that he has far more problems keeping his temper in check then his father.

It seems that he is not as adaptable as Daddy dearest and he does his best to win Vandal’s approval but he doesn’t appear to be the favorite child, which frustrates him.
