Finality

Summary:

It's their final showdown, their final fight. Buffy stakes Spike, and that's it; he's done, he's gone.

And then they both wake up the next day...

Notes:

I actually totally forgot that I was planning to work on and post this for drabblemania, doh. So I'm starting a little late and have no idea how much I'll get posted before the end of the month, but welp, gonna see what happens!

The plan is for these to actually be traditional 100 word drabbles or maybe some double or triple drabbles? But also I'm not gonna worry if they're not, and given the site's dodgy word counter, I dare say even if they are in my word processor, they might not be here ?

Character death for obvious reasons but it's all temporary.

Tentatively set sometime after Spike is chipped, but before he realises he's in love with her, in an AU where he discovers his chip doesn't work on Buffy. I might pin it down better than that at some point, but for now, it's just vaguely S4/early S5.

Chapter 1: Past & Future

Chapter Text

foreground is spike on the left Buffy in the right both looking forwards. In the background we see Buffy and spike fighting with weapons to each others necks, spike Jas a knife and Buffy a stake

Okay, if Buffy's honest, it's kind of a let down? Somehow she expected their final fight to feel more... final. To be a bit more spectacular.

She and Spike always sparred and fought and hit hard, it's always been close, she's never felt confident she knows who has the advantage.

It bothers her more than she's comfortable with. Shouldn't she be more grateful it was easy? That she got shot of that bleach blond pain in the ass without too much difficulty?

But she'll never get to fight him again, and the feeling of disappointment stays with her all day.

Chapter 2: Dancing

Summary:

Prompt: dancing

Chapter Text

He always wanted her to be the one who dusted him, if he didn't get her first. Discovering the Slayer was the only human the chip didn't work on, well...

Maybe he's out of practice, but he sort of expected the dance to be longer, for his final defeat to be a bit more glorious, but then her stake is in his chest and her wide green eyes are the last thing he'll see in this life; on the whole, he can't complain too much.

He can and will complain about waking up and doing it all over again, though.

Chapter 3: Time Loop

Chapter Text

Killing Spike really messes with her head, so much so that she's only vaguely aware that she's gotten stuck in Groundhog Day. Everything just feels... wrong.

She's glad he's gone, she really is - he's been a thorn in her side for years - but he can't be dead, it doesn't make sense, it doesn't feel right. It's not like she's grieving, it's just... the world has shifted on its axis somehow; she can't keep her balance anymore.

She sleepwalks through the whole day right up till Spike jumps out at her on the quad, growls out, "Slayer," then breaks her neck.

Chapter 4: Pool Table

Summary:

please check out the gorgeous new banner in chapter 1 by tragic I love it so much!

Chapter Text

Spike spends the whole day crowing about his triumph to anyone who'll listen, though he gets some very weird looks. Don't these demons know this is his third Slayer?

Couple of the cheeky sods ask for proof; Spike is more than glad to demonstrate his ability to kill by breaking their necks, too. Willy looks like he wants to complain, but Spike's in a belligerent mood; Willy's smart enough to realise Spike could get around the chip if he really wanted to, and leaves well alone.

The Bronze is the natural place to end his night. He plays a few rounds of pool, starts a few fights even if he can't finish them, and considers seducing some pretty blonde chit as a sort of tribute to Buffy. (The thought leaves him a little uncomfortable, but he's ignoring that.)

It's a bloody good time, as well it should be, so it's weird that when someone taps him on the shoulder and he turns to find Buffy with a broken pool cue in her hand, his immediate reaction is a whole-body rush of relief.

(Unfortunately, it's rapidly followed by the sensation of a cue thrust through his heart and disintegration into dust.)

Chapter 5: wild card

Chapter Text

After almost a week of regularly killing each other, Buffy's starting to lose her sense of humour about it. She thought Spike's chip had stopped working, she thought it was necessary, and...

It's not that she wants to keep him around, okay? But she's... used to him. Killing a vampire she knows has always felt ooky. He's not exactly helpless anymore, but if she's the only person he can hurt, then it's not as if he poses a wider threat.

She'll do it; he's still a problem for her, which realistically she can't ignore, but she's starting to hate it.

Chapter 6: prank calling

Chapter Text

At first, Spike's kind of mad that Buffy won't stay dead. It seems unfair; given how bloody hard it is to kill a Slayer, it's deeply unreasonable that he has to keep doing it. And... okay, look, snapping her neck unexpectedly wasn't the most enjoyable, the fights since have been a lot more satisfying, and the loop means he takes more risks, and has more fun. So...

He does start to love that he can savour the fight and the kill (and even the being killed) safe in the knowledge that tomorrow they'll both be back. He enjoys killing Buffy, but the times when she's dead are honestly... a little boring? Sure, somewhere out there a new Slayer is being called, but not his Slayer. Some little girl of sixteen is not his idea of a fun time - he's not Angel.

After the first week and a half, he starts having to find distractions after he's killed her. Turns out, one of the more fun ones is prank calling said Brooding Forehead. And isn't it interesting how any time Spike tells him Buffy's dead, he sounds angry but almost relieved?

Some soulmate. If Spike's honest with himself, Buffy deserves better.

Chapter 7: Over It

Chapter Text

Buffy's so over this. She'd stake him as soon as see him, but then this day will never end. "Damnit, Spike."

"What?"

"You killed me!"

He shrugs. "It's what we do!"

"But when we kill each other, the loop resets. It's annoying! Do you have any idea how irritating it is to write the same essay seven times?"

He raises an eyebrow at her. "Is that why you've been so hard to find?"

"I was avoiding you on purpose! I'm so sick of this day, I thought maybe if we didn't kill each other-"

"But it doesn't work like that!"

Chapter 8: torturous

Chapter Text

"I know!" She's on the verge of tears.

At least this explains why she hasn't tried to off him yet. Poor chit's not really built for killing the same person every day, is she? Someone she knows, at that. Thank fuck for the bloodlust that makes it natural to him. If he had to stop and think about this... he shudders.

Doesn't explain why he hasn't tried either, though. He still wants to fight her, if the whole bloody day didn't reset, he'd probably be happy for months; for Buffy with her whole righteous warrior schtick, it must be torturous.
