A blessing of our own

Summary:

"Let's just say... I won't be the only recipient of your ocean of love."

"What do you mean?" Alan looked more puzzled.

"It is a surprise. A good one, I promise." he said, thinking Alan is getting more and more anxious for no reason. "Why don't you come a little closer?" he playfully suggested, index finger signalling to lean in.

Notes:

Hellooooooooo my cuties!! Missed me much?

I present to you another Alanjeff mpreg! -not a continuation of "Little Apricot", it is a completely new story- cause every single episode of the 2nd season kept convincing my brain that Jeff is with child (fuck you mean he is not?! 🤨🤨). People also asked for it (a poll on tumblr) and who am I not to threat myself or others? So I'm here to deliver baby✨✨✨

A not-so-fun-fact: ideally this chapter would have been uploaded a day ago but almost the ENTIRE municipality of Patras (areas all around my village- which I had to evacuate! -as well as multiple areas around the city I live) and other three cities in Greece are on fire for two days in a row, one after the other!...which is infuriating cause this is a total tragedy, the worst summer of all and despite the fact that we KNOW there would be fires every summer, the goverment chose to hire/appoint more policemen and priests instead of firefighters!!! ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶p̶l̶a̶y̶ ̶s̶u̶g̶a̶r̶ ̶d̶a̶d̶d̶y̶ ̶w̶i̶t̶h̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶p̶l̶a̶c̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶a̶t̶ ̶c̶o̶m̶m̶i̶t̶s̶ ̶g̶e̶n̶o̶c̶i̶d̶e̶... and overall not helping as they should 😃😠
But we are safe. On alert, but safe.

*deep exhale* In any case, let us all have a whale of time with this new fic☺😋.
Hope you enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Jeff walked downstairs, towel in hand as he dried his wet hair. He gave a quick look around in search of his mate.

"Searching for me, dove?" Alan called for him, drawing the other's attention towards the kitchen counter where Alan had finished washing and was now putting away some dishes.

"In a way." Jeff approached him.

Alan closed the cupboard and turned to face him. "Missed me already?"

"No, not really." Jeff replied, stopping in his track and turning to leave.

"Oi!" Alan exclaimed playfully, gently grabbing Jeff by his wrist and pulling him back towards him, his hands instantly wrapped around the younger's waist. "Teasing me, huh?"

Jeff kept looking away, only sparing a glance at Alan, trying to hide his grin. The alpha stared at him, a soft, yet, mischievious smile on his lips. He leaned in, kissing Jeff on the lips, first a peck, then a bit slower and deeper. Alan picked his mate up and sat him on the counter, his lips travelling down his jawline and neck, his teeth lightly grazing the skin just below the bite mark.

He withdrew a little, just a breath away, enjoying how Jeff was somewhat flustered. He kissed him once again, ever so slow, Jeff felt it was more erotic than the previous ones. "Ever so etheral... What am I gonna do with you?" Alan gazed lovingly at his omega.

"I'm in my pyjamas, ready- hours ahead- for bed."

"And?" he asked, as if that changed something.

Jeff shook his head. "Very sappy."

"There is no reason to hold back my love. It can't be contained."

"Yeah, you have a lot of engine space after so many years being alive."

"Why are so mean now?!" Alan reprimanded and pinched his cheek.

"There, there." Jeff patted his shoulder as if to console him. "I can't complain... I like your attention."

"Yours only." Alan caressed the other's right cheek.

Jeff giggled softly and stayed silent for a while. Alan frowned a little, confused but he waited. Some seconds later, Jeff looked back up. "Well..."

"What do you mean 'well'? Do I need to fight someone?"

"You didn't even try to hide your jealousy." Jeff laughed. "But if there was someone else flirting with me, you think I would brag about it right in your face?"

Alan gave a slow nod. "No, you're right... What is it, though?"

"Let's just say..." Jeff stopped for a moment, "I won't be the only recipient of your ocean of love."

"What do you mean?" Alan looked more puzzled.

'It is a surprise. A good one, I promise." he said, thinking Alan is getting more and more worried for no reason. "Why don't you come closer?" he playfully suggested, index finger signalling to lean in.

The older did as he was told, waiting patiently for the other to speak. Jeff's lips hovered over his ear and whispered. "I'm pregnant"

Alan's head jerked up, eyes widened in surprise and staring at Jeff's soft ones, his smile wider within passing moment." Se...seriously?! You're..." his eyes for a second on his abdomen before looking back at him. "We're..."

Jeff nodded excitedly. Alan laughed quitely as he squeezed the other into a hug, both rocking side to side. "That's amazing! Oh my god, that's so amazing!" Alan withdrew a little to hold his mate's face. "We are having a baby!" Alan said, feeling his own words leave him breathless.

"We are having a baby." Jeff repeated, beaming at Alan's excitement.

"I need to start preparing. There are so many things. Make the nursery, buy all the necessary stuff, babyproof everything! We need to book a doctor's appointment asap! Have all the nutritious options-"

Jeff slapped his hand right on his alpha's mouth, silencing him. "Can't have you overheating that early. Doctor's appointment is already scheduled. We can see about the other stuff as the time goes by. You mentioned food though and not gonna lie, I'm a bit hungry now. So, how about you start on dinner, dad?"

Dad.  Both of them liked the sound of it.

"Of course." Alan replied and let go, but not before kissing Jeff's palm and stomach, to start cooking.

Alan unlocked the front door and allow themselves inside, Jeff heading straight to the kitchen to get some water. "That was an experience."

"It's the second doctor's appointment and you're still nervous?" Jeff teased. "And don't tell me you weren't kind of nervous. Excited, yet, nervous" he put his glass down.

"First time and all..." Alan tried to defend himself. " Of course it will be gone, it's just the beginning. After all, you shouldn't even be nervous in your condition, so I'll absorb any nervous feeling you may have."

"True." Jeff chuckled and went to sit on the couch. "Wonder what would be the earliest we can have a scan photo..." he commented, yet, didn't really expect any answer. More of a thought said aloud.

"Well..."

Jeff rose an eyebrow. "Alan?"

"We already have. You're a little over six weeks now so a scan is possible. So I asked for one." Alan rubbed the back of his head.

"You know it is literally a dot." Jeff smiled.

"A very beautiful dot!"

"A beautiful one indeed." Jeff beckoned him over, Alan happily obeying as he took the photo out of his jacket's pocket, handing it to his mate.

"Feels surreal... that this little dot is our baby."

"They are going to be the most adorable, most bubbly and cutest baby there is." Alan remarked with a proud smile, wrapping a hand around Jeff.

"So certain, huh?"

"Yeah. It's our baby after all."

"So in some years we can be like, 'Behold! The long-awaited competition you were all so excited about: who is the bubbliest? Our baby or North?' " Jeff joked and Alan couldn't help but laugh at the theatrics.

"That would surely be entertaining. Until then, we'll be entertained by their surprised faces when we tell them."

Jeff nodded. "I don't doubt that at all. But...can we not tell them yet? It's nice to have a little secret of our own and... kind of want to be safe about it. For some reason, I feel like being too happy will jinx it."

Alan took his hand in his own and kissed it. "Don't be afraid to tell me what you want. Truth is, I also think it's better. There is no rush after all, all in due time." He ruffled Jeff's hair. "In the meantime, would you like to place bets on what each guy's reaction would probably be as we eat?"

"Yeah. Go bring the food, I'm starving."

"Why don't you say so all this time?!" Alan quickly got up and jogged to the kitchen.

Chapter Text

Cars all lined up, engines revving up. Racers and mechanics going back and forth, getting everything and themselves ready. The press and vloggers alike reporting about the long awaited new season of the Grand Prix race.

With a camera in hand, North moved up and down the starting line, showcasing X-hunter's racers, very quickly exchanging a few words with 'The King' and 'Prince' of the Hallow as they were walking to their cars, all in all, hyping X-hunter's fans up for the race.

Babe and Charlie stopped in front of their cars where Kim was waiting. "Ready for today, Kim?" Babe asked.

"Of course." Kim leaned away from his own car, standing up. "You're lucky we are on the same team but even if we weren't, I would still manage to be on top." he fist bumped with the other.

"How come a month ago you were chill but just now you starting dissing each other?" Alan joked from a few feet away but closing in, Jeff following suit.

"It builds character and the team's dynamic." Babe replied with a smile on his face, Kim trying to hide his own.

"Seriously... picking up a fight before the round starts? Anyway," Alan carried on, "we are alright. We follow the plan. No worries, no fear."

"Hey, Jeff. Take a look at my car." Kim requested. "Make sure everything is fine."

Jeff nodded but before he could even take a step foward, Alan held him back. "Oi, Kim... Only I get to boss my mate." Then, he turned to said omega. "Will you take a look please?"

"Sure."

"Thank you."

"I know you love him dearly but dude..." Kim rolled his eyes.

Soon enough the race began. Every racer giving their absolute best as their teams guided them and fans cheered. An intense, captivating race. Especially when the new racer of ETA won first place, Babe only centimetres behind him, Charlie and the rest of them following right behind. A twist no one expected.

Alan thought that Babe would probably launch at this Willy during this 'show-off' of an interview. If not him, then North for sure and he was glad he held him back. Thankfully, this whole 'rooster-fight' was cut short, allowing them to go back to their stations. He put his jacket on and headed out, Jeff already waiting for him by the door of the garage.

"All good?"

"Yeah, just some instructions and stuff. Ready to go?"

Jeff nodded and Alan motioned him to follow him to the back where he had parked the car. On their way, they talked about the race. "What a race, huh? Didn't expect anyone could beat Babe."

"Yeah..."Alan replied, almost a bit absent-minded.

"It's just the first race. I think Babe just lost a bit of rhythm. It can happen sometimes, even to the best."

"Babe's trained a million times. He can't have just lost rhythm. But that kid Willy, his skills are scary. This is what I'm skeptical about. Who knows, the title might be given to someone else this season..." Alan trailed off.

Jeff shook his head. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Like I said, it is the first race." He paused for a bit. "Maybe something to do with the loss of his senses?"

"You've seen Babe race against your brother." Alan wrapped his arms around the other's shoulder. "He blew past everyone on the team. Because of his experience, not some lost 'sense'".

"Willy must be an extremely skilled youth."

"I think he is older than you." Alan joked.

"A joke on my age is a missile attack on yours." Jeff squinted, a threat in a way.

Alan shook his head as he leaned lightly on his car. "He kinda reminds me of Babe as a kid. But that kid Willy is a real little shit though. Maybe I shouldn't have held North back."

"We'll figure out how to turn this around." Jeff giggled, gently holding the alpha's arm. "This year's title still belongs to X-hunter." he reassured and offered a smile.

The other gave a light nod. "Yeah. Come on, let's go home. But first..." he emphazised, Jeff waiting for him to continue. Then, Alan offered his cheek, also softly pouting. "Can I get a consolation prize?"

Jeff looked around, as if what he was about to do was scandalous. With no one around, he drew closer and gave him a peck, like a bunny bopping their head against another or their owner to show their love.

"You are seriously too cute." his mate ruffled his hair.

Suddenly, visions of lab equipment plagued Jeff's mind, his body for a moment freezing out of instinct. He tried to find an explanation for it, but Alan's voice brought him out of his thoughts.

"Hey, you okay? Is there something wrong?" he looked him up and down.

"Yeah. Thought I had forgotten something important. "Jeff lied. He, himself, couldn't really put his finger on it, there is no reason to make the older worry for, if proven so, nothing. "Let's head home."

"Hm." Alan hummed and looked down one more time, smiling as his fingers traced the younger's lower abdomen. "I think you're about to start showing."

"I do?" Jeff was surprised and placed his hand on his body to feel. "Yeah,  you're right...Well, that explains why my suit felt a little tight today. Gonna need a bigger one."

"I'll give you my overalls. At least for some months."

"Then I can mix and match. Let's see how much of a fashion icon I can be. But for the meantime, let's go home."

"Let's go." Alan pinched Jeff's cheek amd turned to get in the car.

Jeff circled the car to get to his seat, his body, however, froze in place again as another vision came, more vivid this time. Somewhere in a lab again. Two men very close to each other. One of them rose his arm towards the other. 'Is that!?'

The vision dispersed, clearing his mind. He took a deep breath, trying to find a rational reason for the vision he saw. 'Must be really tired...to dream such things.' Jeff thought. 'I just need to rest.' He quickly wiped the blood off his nose and got into the car.

As the hours passed, the more he thought about it, the more Jeff feels jittery. The man in the vision was definitely Way. But how? Way is dead, they buried him. He can't have just faked his death for a whole year now... So here he is, late at night pacing around the pool, trying to contact Charlie, see how they proceed. Another failed attempt. Jeff sighed annoyed, typing another text to his brother.

"I thought you'd come to bed. What are you doing out here so late?" Alan walked outside and towards him, the distance giving Jeff a couple of seconds to put his phone in his pocket. "I waited so long I nearly fell asleep out here."

"I just haven't finished my work yet. You can always go ahead and sleep first. You shouldn't have to wait for me if you are tired."

Alan almost felt offended. "No way. I can't fall asleep without you." he said, an amused expression on the younger's face. "Also, the ones who should be getting plenty of sleep and not stay up is you two. Come on, let's go to bed." He wrapped his arms around Jeff's waist but the other slightly pushed him away.

"Wait a sec. I'll be inside soon."

"Why?" Alan furrowed his brows.

"It's nothing. Really."

"Oh, come on. You pulled your hands away from me just now. "You don't want me to touch you or something." he pouted but Jeff smiled softly. Then, something seemed to click in his brain. "Or is it... that your ability to see the future has come back?"

I cannot even answer for myself. I want to believe it's just a very weird dream. But I'm not too sure...

He smiled at him. "I've been able to control my powers for a while now."

"Hm...That makes sense. Otherwise how could I cuddle you every night?" Alan winked and right after gave Jeff a peck on the lips. "Come to bed."

"I'll be right there."

"And why not now?"

"I still have to go over some reports with the mechanical team."

"You can just do it tomorrow. You are the mate of the owner of the garage. No one's gonna chase you and won't dare do so 'cause they will have to deal with me."

"But we work as a team. That's what you preach, remember? I don't want to hold anyone back... and tomorrow is Way's death anniversary, isn't it? So, I better finish it tonight. I'll be with you as soon as I'm done. You go first and maybe warm the bed a bit. It is getting a bit chilly these days."

"That's true. You need to stay warm." Alan fixed Jeff's jacket so as to close it. "Max five minutes. Promise?"

"Mhm."

"Stubborn as ever." the alpha fuffled his hair. "I'll come and carry you back to bed if you take too long."

"I won't take too long."

Pleased with his answer, Alan smiled and gave a little smack on Jeff's butt, taking the other by surprise. He was about to comment but Alan only smirked and headed back inside. Once he was inside, Jeff took his phone out to check if Charlie had responded by any chance. Suddenly, another vision. The serene dark background replaced with the same bright-lit laboratory seeing the same two men- Pete and Way?- standing beside each other, next to him. Jeff took a few deep breaths to compose himself, feeling a thin line of blood drip from his nose.

He wipes it off, staring at his bloody fingers. "Definitely not a coincidence. Need to talk to Charlie as soon as possible..."

========

Next morning rolled around. X-hunter's busy as always, either with the upgrade or maintainance of the cars or with running errands.

"North! Come help me push the car." Alan called.

"Give me a sec, I'm coming!" North answered from the break room finishing something on his laptop.

"I'll get it rolling a bit." he informed, ready to start pushing it.

Jeff approached him, putting his hands on the hood. "Let me help you a little."

"Absolutely not." Alan stopped to pull Jeff's hand away. "You shouldn't push or lift heavy things."

"I won't do squats with the car, Alan." Jeff groaned, annoyed. "I also can't just kick the car and have it roll, so the least I can do is play pretend."

Alan looked uncertain for a few seconds but he eventually hummed in agreement. The next second, North was by their side and began moving the car. "Do we get it to the entrance?"

"Yeah. I'll move the cars outside myself later." Alan told. "Come on, put some effort into it, North."

"What? Seriously, uncle? I'm very helpful. Your lover's the one slacking here."

"Did you just diss my mate?" Alan hissed through clenched teeth, kicking North's leg.

"Double standards, huh?!" the other pointed an accusing finger.

"Yeah. Now just a little more and then stop it.

Someone, a familiar voice, called the uncle's name and seconds later the three of them saw Sonic jogging towards them.

"Heyy!" Alan smiled widely, arms open inviting him for a hug.

"I missed you."

"How have you been? You're doing okay?"

"Yeah. I'm doing good." Sonic answered and looked around the garage, taking in the new decor. "The new garage is actually pretty nice."

"Glad you like it." he patted him on the back.

Sonic got closer to Jeff, hands grabbing his shoulders. "How've you been?" he looked him up and down, his lips curling into a smug grin. "You're totally giving off 'garage owner's boyfriend' vibes. It's glowing off you."

"He is radiant, isn't he?" Alan commented, his tone flirty.

For a split second, Jeff thought Sonic had somehow picked up on his pregnancy but he didn't show it. "And how is France? Despite studying fashion design, you come back and decide to dress in a more lowkey- tone."

"Don't tease me." he playfully nudged him.

Sonic's eyes then fell on North, whose eyes and posture couldn't really hide his excitement. He got closer. "Hey man."

Jeff noticed North seemed like the words where caught in his throat. "Didn't think you would actually come... you were off the radar for quite a while."

"Had to adjust. But, hey, I'm back now, aren't I?" Sonic replied, his attitude matching a kid's that tries to persuade someone.

Alan then spoke. "Call me mean but I think proper catching up would be better after our little memorial. So, North, how about you take Sonic to help you get stuff ready?" The two of them gave a nod and Sonic followed the other to a room. Alan sighed. "It is quite painful to see two people that love each other trying to hide they do."

"You are playing matchmaker now or what?"

"They've been circling one another for years, might as well do so."

"Returning the favour, huh?" Jeff joked.

"Hm... maybe? Well, I did question some suggestions about how to woo you but they made me think about what I should do and, in the end, get the boy I wanted." Alan grabbed Jeff's hand and kissed it. "But like I didn't follow any advice to the letter, neither will they. At least, I hope I can set things in motion.

"Always dependable. Now a very important question, the snack drawer you have in your office, is it full?"

"Yeah. I think any of us barely touched it this week or so. Might not be full but there are definitely stuff."

"What I wanted to hear. Gonna steal some." Jeff's eyes lit up a little and happily strolled towards his mate's office, Alan's eyes glued on the omega as he left him behind, replaying this short exchange to find the point behind the random question. In a matter of seconds, it clicked, making him smile. "He started having cravings. Gonna keep an eye on it to fill it accordingly."

"Sir." A mechanic called for him.

"Coming."

======

Half an hour later, Jeff decided to stop scrolling and go look for Alan. He walked out of the office and glanced around. Not spotting him anywhere in the working area, he headed upstairs and sure enough, there he was, leaning against the railing, the cigarette in his mouth ready to be lit. "Hey."

The other turned his attention to him, removing the cigarette from his mouth. "What's wrong? you look stressed." Jeff prompted.

"Kinda... Kim asked me to leave the team."

Jeff pressed his lips lightly. "I figured he would come talk to you about that at one point. How do you feel?"

He didn't reply but the omega knew his mate and the latter's expression proved so too. "There can only be one number one on the track after all. It's not, by any means, your fault."

Alan sighed. "Still hurts though. Sooner or later, everyone's gonna grow and go their own way."

Jeff wrapped his arms around the other. "No matter where they go, I'm still here with you, aren't I? We are. You shouldn't let 'empty nest syndrome' get to you, when the nest won't be empty now, should you?"

Alan gave a slow now, smiling. "True. Well, we can have a gathering since Kim is leaving and Sonic came back."

"Sounds good. Tell them to come around later. Let them on our little secret while we're at it."

"You're sure?"

"Hm. I want to tell them about our baby."

Voices were heard in the garage and both turned their heads to see that the team had gathered and it was time. "We are all here then."

"Let's go but first," Alan grabbed Jeff's hand preventing him from moving further away, "let me guess what you had a craving for." he said, kissing him. He didn't mind the light slap Jeff gave on his arm. "Caramel filled chocolate cookies."

"I ate them like ten minutes ago. Just how?!" Jeff responded, clearly impressed. "But admit it, you wanted a reason to kiss me."

"Guilty. But I thought I didn't need a reason to kiss you." he smirked.

"You don't. But it is entertaining to see you try... Let's not keep the others waiting."

Chapter Text

"Sonic, get off the phone and come bully Kim with us." Babe plopped down on the couch.

"Are you suddenly scared I will actually be on top?" Kim smirked.

"Top him? That's what Charlie does." North commented, very skillfully avoiding Babe's slap, causing a few giggles.

"No, no, don't leave." Babe urged." My slap wants to tell you a little secret."

"I'm a very open person, I can't possibly keep a secret." he laughed and scooted over the edge of the couch, thankful for Charlie serving as a barricade by sitting in between them. " Don't you dare move, Charlie."

"And if I do?" Charlie pretended to move away.

"Don't." North kept him in place.

Sonic joined them, sitting next to Kim. "So, Sonic, tell us about Paris."

"It is a very beautiful place. Lots of stuff to see and try and the people I've met so far are really lovely."

"Not even a French with an attitude? In the fashion industry? Damn, 'Nic, you hit a jackpot." North commented, taking a sip of his drink.

"How many people do you think can rival Sonic's attitude?" Alan playfully chimed in as he placed a couple of dishes on the table. "Come on guys, dig in."

They started eating while catching up, talking about anything and everything. Alan at one point picked up his glass. "Let's make a toast. Sonic, welcome back. Kim, although it is sad that you leave, we wish you the best, a great career and never forget you are a member of this family."

Right after they clinked glasses, Kim said." Thank you. But I hope you know my departure doesn't mean I'm cutting ties with you all."

"It'd be a bit quiet when you leave." North told.

"You are loud for the both of us." Kim joked.

"Rude, my bro."

"Nah, ever since his partner there," Babe gestured to Sonic with a tilt of his head, "left for Paris, he's been quieter."

Hearing this, North almost choked on his food but, thankfully for him, no one noticed so no one could question the timing.

"North? Quiet?" Sonic gave a quick glance at him. "I don't believe you."

Alan turned to look at Jeff. Judging by the look in his eyes, Jeff knew he was checking if they should go for it now. He nodded and took his last bite, letting the other do most of the talking. Alan cleared his throat a bit, enough to draw their attention. "I have some news." he began, his expression and tone controlled, allowing no emotion to betray him. "One member is leaving, one returned but there will be a new member joining our team soon."

"You already found my replacement?" Kim remarked, making everyone laugh.

"I'm not that harsh!" Alan explained. "I kind of wanted to recruit someone new. Have them under our wing or something like that."

"How come we didn't know of that?" Babe asked.

"Well, I just wanted to be completely sure of it. I haven't thought about posts yet but we'll figure that out eventually. Oh, I have a photo of them."

He reached into the pocket of his jacket and, after stealing a quick look, he placed it in the middle of the table so that everybody could see. The others moved closer to see who this 'mysterious' new member was. But all they saw was a black and greyish picture. Needless to say, they were confused.

"Is that the correct picture?" Kim asked.

"That's a sonogram." Charlie stated, confused but then his eyes immediately widened, as Sonic's jaw dropped. "You're-"

"Pregnant. Yes." Jeff confirmed with a smile, his head resting on Alan's shoulder.

"Congratulations, guys!" Charlie and North hilariously exclaimed together, the others also congratulating the couple.

"Well, that was some news. Must be super excited judging by your expressions." Kim gave a couple of playful slaps on Alan's arm.

"We are." Jeff said, turning to Sonic." I honestly thought you had somehow figured it when you told me 'It was glowing off me' in the morning. Like, you're here for not even a day and you got it?! But good to know we surprised you." he admitted.

"And I was only talking about you fully embracing uncle's influence. Just imagine..." Sonic giggled.

"Wait," Babe popped in, "you were impressed with Sonic, so it must have been a while since you knew."

"Why don't you take a guess?" Alan entertained, reaching for his drink.

North took the photo in his hand to quickly inspect it. "I'm gonna be way off but like three weeks."

"Three months." Jeff answered.

"What?!"

"Huh?!"

"Months!?" North emphasized.

"No, years. There is actually a toddler hiding behind the counter." Jeff deadpanned, yet, tried to hold back his smile.

"You pull our leg right now but it won't be too long till there is an actual toddler running around." Charlie told.

Babe picked up his glass. "To X-hunter's little mascot."

Everyone joined in. "To X-hunter's little mascot."

Chapter 6

hi, hello, life happened but here I am ✨✨

Chapter Text

When Jeff told Charlie about his powers acting up, how instead of subsiding they seemed enhanced, how he had seen Way alive and well, he didn't expect him and Babe to present the team with a photo of the new researcher, a carbon copy of Way, only a week later. For the time being, they had agreed that this was probably a doppelganger situation -of course until proven otherwise- but it got everyone thinking.

Some glass scattering brought Jeff out of his thoughts. He rose from the floor where he had been working and headed to the kitchen, spotting Alan crouching down and picking some shards. He heard him hiss when one piece pricked his finger.

"Be careful." Alan extended his arm, indicating to his mate not to come closer but Jeff grabbed the broom and dustpan to clean up. Tossing then into the bin and searching the first- aid kit for a bandage, he motioned to Alan to let him have a look at it. Alan didn't protest at all, he just let the other do as he pleased, standing still and admiring.

Jeff gave a light peck on the finger. "All healed now... stressing out and fixing stuff again?"

"Can't really hide anything from you, huh?" he shook his head. "You are reading my mind or something?"

Jeff couldn't help but help but feel his heart race a tiny bit faster after such statement. But he didn't let that show. "It's Pete's new researcher that's bugging me. Can't be the only one..."

"It's crazy... Having someone who looks exactly like Way suddenly show up so close. It really feels weird. Do you think someone planned it?"

The omega sighed. "Why would you comfort Babe back at the garage telling him it is a coincidence when you're overthinking it yourself?"

"I just don't want Babe to do something reckless, you know how he is."

"You guys miss Way, it is okay to second-guess it.

Alan took a deep breath. "Missing him or not, it won't change what happened. We should let Chris do his work, help with the skill-nullifying drug to help all the power users. But you probably won't need it since you can control it so well." he ruffled the other's hair.

Seeing how Jeff stared at him absentmindedly, Alan joked. "Why the long face? Don't tell me you grew attached to your power?"

"Are you?" Jeff entertained.

"Nah, that's for you to decide."

"Well, till the moment comes, quit stress- fixing stuff. Go. Find me something good to eat and then join me in the living room." Jeff urged and turned to leave but the alpha was quick, wrapping his arms around the omega's abdomen, softly cushioning the forming baby bump.

"I don't know about food but can I take a bite out of you instead?" he grazed his teeth over the other's neck and immediately after kissed the spot.

"Oi!" Jeff playfully tried to break free.

Alan kissed his cheek and rested his head on Jeff's shoulder, his eyes looking at where his hands rested as his thumb gave a gentle stroke. "Little one surely makes you have an appetite. Any specific preferences or do you want it to be a surprise?"

"I'm fine with anything. I'll let you do your magic. Let me go finish my work before we leave." Jeff withdrew just enough to be released from his alpha's embrace and held his hands, giving him a kiss and leaving to continue his work.

===========

Alan thought that the sight of Sonic, North and Charlie sitting around and focused on Babe training on the simulator had the potential of a 'renaissance' kind of painting which he found funny. However, he understood Babe's frustration as well as how current circumstances could affect the team's performance, as North was correctly pointing out at the moment. "Uncle, we're totally outnumbered like that."

He couldn't help but grin a bit. "All we need is a new racer to replace Kim. It can't possibly be that bad."

"In the middle of the racing season?" Jeff reprimanded. "As if someone would be willing enough to switch teams."

Then Babe spoke. "Alan, I'll be okay myself and I'll help train Charlie. You just focus on coming up with a plan for the duo that we will be."

"I'm confident in your skills, I don't doubt them. Honestly, I don't need some super skilled racer. I need one who gets how our team works. Skills get more refined as time passes but what really matters is attitude and their willingness to do teamwork. So, it's someone who's been with us for a while."

North shook his head. "Tsk, tsk, aiiish, uncle. The baby isn't even born yet and you already show nepotism. You gonna have Jeff race?" Everyone laughed.

"My mate is extremely skilled indeed." Alan drew Jeff closer by the waist and gave him a kiss on the temple." But no. There is no way I'll have him do that, I'm very lenient even now 'cause he shouldn't even be working." He glanced at him for a second as if to reprimand him and then turned to North. "North, this year you're moving up to the main league."

"Wait -seriously, uncle?" North was speechless to say the least.

Alan nodded with a smile on his face. Everyone shared the excitement, congratulating him on his promotion, Sonic giving him a squeezing hug and Babe lightly shaking his shoulder.

"Okay, racer found. What about a mechanic? Kim took his personal mechanic with him remember?" Sonic asked.

"So, who is gonna help?"

"You can come in now."

The team didn't hide their confusion at Alan addressing empty space but just two seconds later, Dean appeared from around the corner taking them by surprise.

"What are you doing here?!" Babe almost jumped at Dean but Alan and North held him back.

"Calm down, alright? Chill."

"What the hell is going on?" Babe demanded to know.

Alan started explaining about Dean's surprise visit last night. About the unexpected- almost suspicious- release from prison and in the middle of nowhere and what Alan had in mind. "I'm willing to give him a chance. But I can't take that decision just by myself. You all have a say in this. Mostly you, Babe. It's your call whether he stays or not."

"Babe." Dean spoke cautiously, afraid the other would righfully launch at him again, "I want you to know... I really do regret it. I can't be excused though, so if you don't want me, I won't come back again."

Babe thought for a moment. "I get it. They used you so you have your dream."

"I'm done with racing. I'll be more that okay with being a mechanic or whatever post you give me. All I want is to gain your trust back."

"He can work under me." Jeff added. "That way everyone knows nothing shady is going on. He won't have time to mess around after all."

A moment of silence before Babe smiled. "Well, with you returning to the garage, we'd better hide all the wrenches. Just looking at them freaks me out."

"I'm back for real?!" Dean's voice was scared, yet, hopeful.

"Hm, thank Alan for that."

"I'm really grateful to both of you." he gave a light bow.

"Just a head's up," North chimmed in, "since you will be under Jeff's wing, don't overwork him. In fact, prepare to take on a lot of work in two months or so."

"I... I don't mind but is there a reason?" Dean asked, unsure of North's comment.

"Well, he is not wrong. Keep an eye on him and our little one." Alan said, lightly caressing Jeff's belly.

"Oh! Congratulations." Dean's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh, now I feel bad sneaking around the house. I can imagine what you were thinking."

"If you were dangerous, I would have beaten you with the club, wouldn't I?"

"That's true." He turned to Jeff. "Don't hesitate to give me any work, you can depend on me."

"I can't have you do all the work but I'll have it in mind."

Alan gave a light pat on the other's knee. "Go help North." Then he raised his voice. "And I want all my racers on the track in fifteen for practice!"

======

"First day of training and North's already puking."

"Don't be meaaaan! Charlie and Babe ganged up on me, otherwise I wouldn't have messed up."

"You were alright, North. Keep it up." Alan said.

A few carried on with the chit chat, others just enjoyed the company of their teammates while checking their phones or their performance statistics. Jeff finished typing some things on his computer and left to check Babe's car, giving a quick smile to his mate who passed by him to check something with Dean. He extended his arm, ready to lift the hood up but his whole body froze. Flashes of an outside setting that he couldn't really distinguish, the screeching sound of a car's tires and a crash. Jeff's knees gave out a little, making him kneel on the ground, head pounding.

From a few feet away, Charlie called Jeff to come see something, which prompted Alan to look towards the younger. Although everything seemed okay, the alpha took a step back to have a clearer rear view, noticing Jeff on his knees. He didn't lose time to approach him. "Jeff?" Getting closer Alan saw Jeff on his knees, heavy breathing, with one hand protectively over his abdomen. Alan's heart dropped." Jeff! Talk to me... Babe! Bring me my phone now!" He knelt beside him trying to figure out what had happened, despite him panicking.

"I'm okay now." Jeff shook his head lightly. "I got dizzy for a moment."

"I'll get him some water." Sonic jogged back to the mini fridge they had.

"Sit down." Charlie urged.

"I'm really okay." Jeff replied, yet, not really resisting his mate and brother sitting him down.

"Do you feel any pain anywhere?" Alan asked, scanning him up and down, signalling Babe to pass him his phone.

"No. I'm fine." he insisted. "Baby too. I must have instinctively put my hand here."

"Here, drink some water." Sonic passed him the water.

"Maybe you overheated. It is pretty hot today." North pointed out.

After Jeff took some sips, Alan took the water bottle pouring some on a towel Sonic had also fetched and dabbing it on Jeff's face and collarbone. "Let's get you in the trailer. Can you stand up?"

Jeff nodded and he helped him up. "Are you still dizzy?"

"No. I'm actually a lot better now."

"Why don't you call it a day?" Dean suggested. "I can handle the rest, you go and rest."

"He is right." Charlie agreed. "No need to push yourself."

Jeff let himself be led back in the trailer, where Alan laid him on the little sofa they had as he rang the doctor. A minute later, Alan put his phone in his pocket. "Plenty of rest and water and not overdo it. If you feel dizzy again, let me know so I can inform the doctor too."

"Sorry for worrying you."

Alan ran his fingers through the omega's hair, caressing it. "I admit it, I panicked a bit but it is not your fault. I'm glad you are alright. Now, how about you get some sleep while I go pick up some food to feed you?"

Jeff hummed softly. Alan smiled. "Then I'm off. I won't be long."

The memory of a car crash in vision replayed itself in Jeff's mind, making him grab Alan's hand and halt his movement. What if it was Alan who got into a car crash?

The other was about to ask him but Jeff spoke. "Why not just have something delivered? We do have the rest of the day clear from our teammates. You could use some rest too."

"That works too. The usual?"

"Yeap."

"Let me see if the other want anything. It'll only take a minute."

"Get some cookies too."

"Already had that in mind." Alan leaned in for a kiss on the forehead.

(about a week later)

"Jeff, is anyone else coming to train today?"

Jeff looked up from his computer and turned to look at Dean walking up to him, thinking. "Babe might swing by. At least that's what Alan told. No changes so far."

"The others?"

"North can't make it today and Charlie has that appointment. If you are done, you can head out. I'll handle the rest."

"You sure?" he asked, receiving a nod. "Kay. I'll head off then."

"Bye."

Jeff got back to his work, computer in his hands as he sat in the passenger seat to check the car's statistics, when all of the sudden, instead of the parked car he was sitting in, he was- as the vision dictated- in the passenger seat of a moving car.

In spite of his confusion, he did his best to access the situation, even though it could be to no avail. On his right, Babe drove calmly, making him think harder of the possible scenarios, yet, his thoughts were interrupted when another car crashed into them, window breaking and the car swerving due to the forceful impact.

Jeff breathed heavily, his head pounding. Wiping the blood off his nose, he got out of the car, only for his knees to give out. His body trembled and ached. Why was he feeling pain? Should he even feel pain from a vision? But what if something was wrong with the baby?... His heart sank at the thought. So many thoughts yet so much pain and so little time, as he was sure he would pass out.

He fished his phone out of his pocket and quickly dialed the number he wanted. After two rings, Alan picked up but before anything, Jeff said. "Call Babe now. It's urgent!"

He could hear his mate's voice over the phone, calling his name probably confused and concerned but he couldn't keep his eyes open...

-------------------

Charlie and Pete quickly navigated through the hospital's hallways to reach the team in the waiting area. "How is Babe doing, uncle?"

"He is safe. He is really lucky, he just got a strained tendon. The doctor's running a few more test but unless something is wrong, I think he will recover soon enough."

"Do we know who hit him?" North asked.

"The cops say it was a hit-and-run, so they haven't found them yet."

"After such a bad crash and that dude doesn't have the slightest injury?" Sonic was skeptical.

Alan shrugged. "We can only speculate, the security camera didn't help the cops much in figuring out where that car came from. A witness said it ran a red light and didn't even dare brake."

"It was on purpose." Jeff managed to say. His heart felt heavy as every turned and stared at him, confused about what he meant. He could sense guilt slowly settling but he had to explain, for his sanity and their safety. "I saw this future coming."

Alan drew closer. "What do you mean? Didn't you say you had your power under control for almost a year now?"

"I.... just started having visions again. The first time I thought this wasn't really it. Either a weird dream due to tiredness or maybe a gut feeling is more accurate. But it is real."

"That's why you called me... to check on Babe." Alan's voice trailed off, his mind racing. "When did it come back?"

"Quite recently... I really thought I was controlling it just fine." Jeff rose his head a bit, giving a quick look at his mate, as if it could convey the helplessness. "But now, I felt pain."

Alan's heart seemed to stop. "Pain?" Why he felt pain?

Jeff nodded. "Like the car had hit me too, even though I wasn't there..."

Pete spoke. "Jeff, if seeing the future physically hurts you like this, it's not exactly a good sign."

"Your special ability has gotten even stronger than before, I think." Charlie told. "We will need to run tests to ensure that it won't affect you or the pregnancy in any way."

"Something so serious and you didn't think to tell me?" Alan asked, his tone concerned, yet, angry.

Jeff offered a little awkard smile, in an attempt to be reassuring, although he knew it would be in vain. "You couldn't have helped me, you know how my power is... I'm okay now, really. I didn't actually get hurt."

"So what?" his expression and tone obviously angry. " Should I wait for you to die before you tell me if something is wrong?"

"No! Just- Alan!" Jeff called out but the other kept walking away. "Alan!"

"Give him some time." North suggested. "Let him let it out and everything will be okay."

Jeff hoped so too.

But unfortunately, that wasn't the case. A whole day- dangerously closing in two- has passed and Alan straight up refused to have a conversation, unless work-related or to momentarily check up on him (Jeff had caught him a couple times stealing glances). But other than that, he ignored him. It both hurt him and frustrated him.

His options weren't great either. Dean's suggestion to strike up a conversation regarding work wasn't successful, Charlie's was off the table without second-guessing it and North's offer to pretend he has noticed him unwell to draw attention was not something he wanted cause what was the point of worrying his partner more, especially when he had hidden his collapsing?

He paused working, thinking of possible ways. He picked up a wrench and tossed it away, pretending the tool had slipped from his hands. Despite the warning he shouted, Alan, who had been working on another car next to him, gave an indifferent look at it and went back to work. The omega sighed a little as he picked up the wrench and returned to his car. What could he even do? Alan's stubborness was really getting on his nerves at this point. He had a look at the engine, one hand supporting the hood. 'Maybe I'll try out North's suggestion after all.'

He closed the hood of the car, hard enough to make it sound like it had slammed, holding his hand and groaning as if he was in pain. Alan immediately turned around to check. "Hey, you got hurt?" He got closer, checking his mate's arms for any cuts or bruises. Although relieved he was okay, Alan wasn't exactly thrilled the other had pretended to do so. He turned to leave but Jeff caught his arm. "Hold on. Can't we talk first?"

"When we could have talked, we didn't. I don't see what's the point now."

"I know you overthink stuff. That's why I didn't tell you, not because you don't deserve to know. I just didn't want to be a burden to you."

"Sir, they are calling for you." one of the engineers said to Alan.

"Have to go." the alpha said and left.

An hour later, Jeff decided to try talking once again. So here he was, leaning against the doorframe of Alan's office. "How did the meeting go?"

"Quite okay honestly." Alan grabbed a paper and started typing on the computer.

"That's good. Oh, everything is okay with Charlie."

"Yeah, he called and told me."

"Should we go home? Everyone else already left." Jeff decided to ignore the indifferent tone.

"I'll finish the paperwork first."

"I can do it." he offered. "You should use your time for something else."

"It's alright. Go and rest." Alan remained focused on his work.

Jeff stared at him for a moment, contemplating. He then walked away, towards the car where he had left his laptop. He pressed a few keys and waited.

In his office, Alan was typing things in the computer when suddenly it seemed to malfunction. For a second, he was worried he lost important data but then a picture of him and Jeff popped up with a text saying 'let's make up' so he knew Jeff had hacked in. He got up from his seat and went up to his mate. "Why did you hack my computer?"

Jeff closed his laptop as he turned to face him. "Well, you just keep sulking and won't talk to me, no matter how much I try...I've apologised a hundred times, still not good enough for you?" he said, his frustration in his voice unable to stay hidden.

Alan took a deep breath. "Let me ask you something. Do you even know why I am mad? Earlier you said you didn't want to be a burden. That word shouldn't even exist in a relationship. A couple can depend on one another when something is wrong. Not push each other away and what you did was just that...What our relationship means to you... please think it over properly." he told, heading back to his office.

Jeff simply stood there, not really sure how to feel about it.

Jeff opened the door and dragged himself inside the house, very tired- both physically and emotionally.

His thoughts were still plagued by Alan's words and betrayed expression, as he replayed the conversation he had an hour ago with his brother in the lab. He tossed his bag at the foot of the sofa and was about to head upstairs when he caught with the corner of his eye Alan sitting on the step outside, probably gazing at the garden outside.

Jeff stayed still for a moment. Then he approached him.

He walked slowly towards him and sat down next to him. Alan didn't seem to react but now he wasn't so deep in thought. Jeff rested his head on Alan's shoulder, his hand gently hugging the other's arm. "I shouldn't have kept it a secret...I'm sorry. Can you forgive me?"

"This isn't something small, you know. It's about trust..." Alan turned his head lightly. "To be honest, I'm not mad that your power got out of control. However happy I was that you didn't have them and everything was okay, I'm not fool, I had in mind this could be a possibility. I'm mad because it hurts you to the point that it is physically painful and you didn't even tell me. You tell me that I couldn't help. Do you know how irritating it is and how helpless I feel knowing you cannot depend on me or trust me to help you if need be?"

"I trust you. More than anyone. What I can't trust is my future..." He paused. "Do you know why I never told you what I saw in our future?"

"You had another vision?" Alan's interest was piqued, yet, he was concerned by how gloomy his mate appeared.

Jeff nodded. "I had that a bit ago. I didn't tell you because what I saw was that, in the end, we might not be together...That's why I didn't want to talk about it with you. Because, every other flash of that vision, I saw us angry or you weren't there at all and now, with Tony somehow still alive, it will either be separation or death and I don't know which one is scarier..." he admitted, his voice trying to hold back his emotions. "So, no, I do trust you. I don't trust my future because it wants to ruin the life I wished and fought so hard for."

Alan repositioned himself so as to sit opposite of the other, his hand cradling his face as Jeff leaned in to his touch, his thumb wiping away a tear that almost escaped. "But even knowing that, we are still gonna stay with one another, right?" He gained an eager nod from the younger. "That's all it matters. Whatever the future holds, we're still gonna be together. You are not alone anymore. No matter what happens, I'll always be by your side. I'm not letting go of you or this little one." Alan's hand lightly caressed his belly. "I will glue myself to you so as to prove it, you're gonna be sick of me."

Jeff cracked a smile and Alan pulled hin in for a hug. "I'm sorry for being a dick. It wasn't fair for you."

"Don't dismiss your feelings. We are both at fault after all."

Alan withdrew a little to hold the omega's face in his hands. Hearing a little annoyed groan, the latter asked. "What's wrong?"

"Now I'm mad at myself for being mad because I haven't kissed you for two days... oh gosh two days."

"Are you going to keep yourself mad or do something?" Jeff smiled.

"I'm gonna kiss you so many times you'll lose count." he leaned in and kissed him, each kiss longer and more passionate than the last.

Alan's eyes opened slowly, blinking away the sleep. In front of him, the wonderful sight of his mate sleeping peacefully in his arms, his face nuzzled against the alpha's neck. He smiled to himself and slightly tightened his grip, leaving a soft peck on Jeff's forehead.

A while later, Jeff stirred awake, raising his head a little and seeing Alan smiling at him.

"Morning."

"Morning."

"Did you sleep well?"

Jeff hummed in agreement as he stretched, rolling slightly away from the other because of it and allowing Alan to sit up on his elbow. "Good thing we don't have a lot of work today."

"We don't have work today."

"What do you mean we don't have work?"

"It means," Alan towered over him, "that boss has decided we have the day off today. Take some time to unwind and also apologise for stressing you out. So! For the entire day, you choose what we're going to do."

"You are definitely getting me food."

"I already have places in mind." Alan winked.

"Good. We could visit the aquarium. Have a walk at the park."

"Anything else?"

"I'll think later. Are we having breakfast here or somewhere else?"

"Your day, you choose."

"There is a new place I want to try."

"Yes, sir. Now, go get yourself ready, pretty boy." Alan kissed him on the cheek, then gave two quick kisses on his belly and got up to get dressed.

=========

"Think your plan is working out?" Jeff asked.

Alan took a sip of his coffee before he answered. "I guess. Can't figure out why they act distant."

"They haven't fought, have they?" Jeff took a bite of his breakfast.

"Not that I know of."

"Well, if it can even count as something, I think I saw Sonic put a pin on North's suit for good luck."

"That is something indeed." Alan's expression clearly showing a hint of excitement.

"From what era are you?" Jeff laughed. "Why so scandalized?"

The other laughed at the comment too. "Okay, not a jaw-dropping scandal," he lifted his spoon in th air waiting for Jeff to eat, "but it is entertaining."

"What did you get again?"

"Chocolate mousse."

Jeff leaned in and took the bite. "Oh, that's nice."

"It is." Alan agreed, eating a spoonful as well. "Do you want to ask the waitress for one more?"

"Nah, the waffles were very filling and we will hold back for now 'cause there's a spot at the park that makes great sweet crepes." he said, his hand resting on his small bump.

"I hope there's proper lunch too in your plans."

"Of course there is, I'm not weird."

"Good to hear." Alan chuckled.

=========

"Oh, that is just amazing. Look at all of this!"

"That is definitely a sight. "Alan couldn't help but giggle at Jeff's excitement. "It is bigger than I imagined."

"It is so serene. Makes me want to just float and go to sleep."

"Felt that."

Jeff grabbed his hand and they moved along the hallways and display tanks, both of them occassionally pointing at something that caught their attention to the other. But most of time, Alan's gaze was glued on his mate, loving every expression Jeff made. With the younger still distracted by the school of fish swimming by, Alan took put his phone and took a picture of him.

Just in time before Jeff turned to steal a glance, meeting with Alan's loving eyes upon him. "What?"

"Just admiring the art." He looked down for a second. "Both pieces of art."

"Sappy." Jeff smiled. "Glad there is no 'no photos allowed' sign, otherwise you'd have to forfeit your treasure."

"Then I'm glad I get to take said treasure home 'cause they are mine." Alan gently pinched the other's cheek.

Jeff twisted Alan's hand just enough to check the time on his watch. "It's almost closing time. Shall we go?"

"Mh, let's go."

=========

After they finished eating some sweet crepes at the spot Jeff had recommended, the couple decided to stroll around the park before they had to go home, talking about whatever.

"These crepes were honestly so good."

"Told you so." Jeff said, pride in his voice. "I'm so full with all the food we ate today I think I'll skip dinner."

"You need a balanced diet. No way you are skipping meals. Just something small."

"We'll see."

"So, anything else in mind that you want to do before heading home?"

Jeff shook his head. "No. The day was pretty nice. It was fun."

"It's nice to hear you enjoyed the day."

"Did you?"

"Of course. Why wouldn't I enjoy our date?" Alan stopped walking and stepped in front of Jeff. "Never think I hate spending time with you. Got it?" he pressed his forehead against his.

"Okay." he nodded.

Satisfied with the response, Alan gave him a peck on his lips.

"You know what we haven't visited lately?" Jeff asked.

"What?"

"The skating ring"

"Are you trying to kill me?!"

"Oh come on, why?" Jeff asked while giggling. "You did great that day."

Did great with not breaking any bone or busting a hip." Alan countered. " Also, refrain from it for these few months. I really don't want a heart attack."

"Don't worry. I bet the more they're growing, the less motivation I'll have for it. But you and baby can train alongside each other when the moment comes."

"Just say you take pleasure in seeing me fall."

Jeff just laughed, gently rubbing the other's forearm. "I'm not that harsh. But falling for me? Yeah, that I enjoy." He kissed him on the cheek. "So, that is a future plan, in the meantime, why don't we start going home?"

"Lead the way."

Chapter 10

Notes:

hello, hello! enjoy <3

Chapter Text

a week later

A punch.

And here he thought things would be alright- given the situation with Tony- but the universe was really against it.

Another punch.

Some days prior, he was talking about wedding rings with his mate, teasing Charlie and Babe about their own promise rings, celebrating the first victory this racing season, in general enjoying his time with the other members of their team, grateful for the serenity and balance. Then, hell seemed to slowly break loose. North and Sonic were distant, Charlie and Babe were fighting- the former moving out as well as leaving the team to concentrate on the nullifying drug trials and the latter now absolutely hurt and unmotivated. His own shoulder was acting up out of the blue. Tony seemed to move on with his plans without a care in the world.

Another punch on the box sack. Gosh, was he pissed off.

He delivered another two punches before the pain in his shoulder made him groan a bit.

"Why don't you take a break?" Kenta prompted as Kim helped Alan sit down. "That was enough of a workout already. Take it easy or you'll hurt youself more."

"I'm fine." Alan took off the boxing gloves. "If the team I built half my life is falling apart, a busted back or shoulder isn't that big of a deal."

"You've dealt with a hostage situation, sure this is less dramatic."

Kim threw a glance at Kenta, as if a warning before speaking. "Now I feel bad man."

"Hope so, you were the first to leave." Alan pointed an accusing finger. "You and Charlie, what do you guys think my team is? Coming and going as you please?..." He shook his head and sighed. "Sorry for ranting but honestly what did I do wrong? I really feel helpless."

"If it makes you feel better, go ahead and yell at me. I don't mind. But if running the team is stressing you out so much, maybe you ought to take a break."

"Normally, I should be stressing over choosing a good crib, a basinet, baby covers and all that stuff but circumstances don't allow it... If I step back, what will everyone else do? I know each of you are capable but I can't just neglect you."

Alan picked up the gloves again and rose up, ready to resume training but Kim held him back. "You care about everyone so much, you forgot your own happiness... Come on, man, you are going to be a dad! The main focus is to dot on your mate and child."

"That's the main plan but I bet I'm already stressing him enough."

"Because you bottle up too much. That's no good. Be careful or you'll probably end up like Kenta." Kim adviced, not paying any mind at Kenta's questioning look towards him. He patted Alan lightly on his back. "Come on, wear them and throw a few more punches. I'm not letting you go back to Jeff like this."

Alan offered a tiny smile. "That's why I came to unload in your place. You owe me for leaving, pay part of the price."

-----------

"Why are you mad? I quit the team for a while..." Charlie carried on with putting away groceries.

Jeff rolled his eyes. "How can I not be mad? I haven't seen my mate that mad. Seems like everything is going the worst way possible, yet, you still have guts and come find me like nothing changed."

"You are at the apartment."

"And who texted me to come? Trying to irritate me?"

"This is more important than your mate's mood." Jeff was about to respond but Charlie went on. "The other day I raced with Willy. I think he is an alpha with special power, just don't know what it is."

"So...Babe's suspicions were right. Why do you keep fighting then and not apologize?"

"Can't just say anything yet."

"Why?" Jeff asked, confused and almost annoyed.

"Because the one who sent Willy is Tony."

"Huh!?"

"I followed him to figure out whatever I could. Tony sent him to take out everyone around me. He wants to use me for something."

"It's you instead of Babe this time. How original..." Jeff took a seat on one of the stools, finding himself caressing his baby bump.

"I can handle it. He probably knows what my power can do by now, so I can expect certain scenarios."

"So you hold up this facade..."

"It's better than putting everyone at risk." Charlie leaned on the kitchen island.

"You think solving everything on your own will do the trick? Just because you voluntarily offer yourself to him, does not guarantee Tony will stop hunting us down. I hope you have that in mind."

Charlie seemed to think for a moment yet he spoke firmly. "I do."

Jeff sighed, not sure if there was still a point to convince him otherwise. "Hope your plan works- cause I want my child to have all of their uncles."

"I'll first spoil them rotten and then die. That's a given."

"Keep it that way, will ya? Got to go now." Jeff looked at his watch and stood up. "Sure you don't need something?"

"Yeap. Go home now."

Jeff waved his brother goodbye and exited the apartment. After driving around for some errands, he got back home. As soon as he got out of the car, he saw Alan closing the front door behind him and walking towards him.

"Didn't expect you to be back so soon."

"Me neither but one of them cancelled for today so here I am. You're going to the doctor right?"

"Yes."

Jeff noticed he was somehow out of it. "Why that face? Stressed? I can come with you to see the doctor."

Alan shook his head. "No, no, I'm fine. You go and rest, I won't take long."

"Sure?"

"Sure."

"Drive safely." he gave a peck on his cheek.

With Alan out of the driveway, Jeff headed inside, just standing in the doorway, answering some text messages. After five minutes or so, he put his phone away and was about to start organising some stuff when Alan walked through the balcony door.

"Alan?" Jeff asked, totally confused. Hadn't he just left?

But Alan didn't respond. He kept walking towards the kitchen. Jeff followed suit. Maybe he forgot something? But why walk in from the garden or not call him to fetch it outside?

But then, out of the corner, he saw himself walking past him and towards the couch where Alan was sitting and sitting down with him. The very next second, 'he and Alan' were walking down the stairs. Chills ran down Jeff's spine. He was confused, wary and creeped out, with no way to explain the sight of their own...doubles?

"What is going on?"

His head started pounding, a splitting headache, a high-pitched static in his ears. Jeff winced, shaking his head. He felt something wet trail down almost instantly, tasting iron on his lips. Trying to calm himself, he took a few deep breaths, wiping the blood off his nose and mouth. He should probably call somebody. Alan? Charlie? An ambulance? 'Gosh just call someone!' But he hesitated. Something was off... Could he even wait? What if it was getting worse?

Jeff stormed out of the house. He got into the car and started driving. Was it smart? Honestly, he didn't know. For all he knew, he might not be driving even and simply laying on the floor. Everything seemed to spin around, other things appeared double and the few moments of clarity he had didn't feel real.

"Please pick up, pick up."

----

In the doctor's office, Alan tried to pay attention to the doctor as he was talking about his diagnosis and possible treatment. However, the vibrations from his phone in his hands didn't stop. He couldn't look away from Jeff's name on the screen, which only made him more worried.

"I'm sorry. It is urgent." Alan walked outside to answer it. "Jeff? Is something wrong?"

"Hey, can...can you hear me?"

Jeff's tone of voice was starting to scare him. "Are you alright? Wh-"

"I think my power's getting worse. It is more intense. I don't know."

"Where are you right now?" Alan took a deep breath, trying not to lose his calm.

"I don't know... It's like I'm seeing double. Everything is overlapping."

"Jeff?"

A car swerving on the road. Then a crash.

No matter how many times he called his name, Jeff didn't respond...

Missed me? 😋

Chapter Text

Alan believed his heart had stopped beating.

Time and body alike frozen. Despite the utter silence, the thoughts in his mind were too loud.

Fear. Fear and words of hope in prayer that not once stopped being mumbled.

He didn't dare breathe. Only when he heard the doctor telling him Jeff and the baby are well and out of danger, only when he himself saw his mate sleeping- maybe in some pain but overall peacefully- feeling his heart beating strong, his warmth, did Alan let out a relieved, shaking breath, trembling hands gently resting on the baby bump and holding Jeff's hand, giving it a kiss as a tear escaped from his eyes.

Hours passed by. Jeff's eyes opened slightly, blinking to adjust his sight. He turned his head to the left, falling on Alan's resting form beside him. Jeff rose and sat up, the other immediately lifting his head as he sensed movement, also standing up. "Jeff? How are you feeling? Any pain?"

"What happened?"

"You crashed the car. Luckily there is no brain damage or broken bones."

Jeff lifted his hand to his stomach. "The b-"

"Baby is fine too. We have a little fighter as the doctor said."

Out of the corner of his eye, Jeff saw Charlie and Babe appear from behind the wall that divided the room. Charlie approached the bed, his hand pressing lightly on his leg. "Are you okay? Alan told me everything. The side effects of your power got worse, didn't they?"

Silence. In front of them, Jeff stood still, completely silent and staring into space, his breathing a bit laboured. Charlie tried to draw his attention back to him but to no avail. "Jeff?"

Alan cupped Jeff's face and made him look at him, finally managing to bring him out of his thoughts. "Is everything okay?"

Overwhelmed though he was, Jeff tried to be calm, shaking his head lightly. "I... don't know. What is happening exactly or how to explain it. I'm seeing double all over again. Everything is overlapping and all these flashes of the future that I can't even decipher. I... I don't think I can control it anymore."

-----

"Is his condition really this serious?" Babe asked as all three were walking out of the room, Alan following them to see them out.

"Doctor wants him to stay a night so as to monitor the two, should an emergency arise. Now regarding the powers, I can only hope there is at least something to handle it... That ability-reversing drug you're working on, there is still hope, right Charlie?"

Charlie lightly pressed his lips together, his imply quite clear. Alan sighed. Out of habit, Alan rolled his shoulder back to stretch but he instantly felt pain in his neck. Babe shot him a concerned look. "You okay, unc?"

"Yeah." he nodded, taking a deep breath.

"Have you seen a doctor yet?"

"Just this morning. Chronic spinal compression in the neck. They say I need surgery."

"What? It's that serious?" Babe was taken aback and so was Charlie.

"Apparently. But I'm not doing it yet."

"Are you out of your mind? Why hold back?"

"Don't worry about me. I will do it. It's just now that I can't. I need to be here for Jeff. In any way I can... The best I can at least, given the circumstances. If I go in for surgery, I can't help him or you at all. I'd hate that for myself... and I already hate that I am not strong enough to protect any of you."

"Hey. If we didn't have you, many things, including our lives would have been worse. Whatever we have to deal with, you are always here for us. So stop blaming yourself. "Babe reprimanded, annoyed by how Alan beat himself down.

Alan patted him on the arm. "Well, have to go pick something and you guys should get going too. We'll talk."

The two bid goodbye to Alan and stood there, watching him move away. Babe prompted them to start walking but Charlie told him to go ahead, lying he had to go to the bathroom.

When Charlie made sure neither Babe nor Alan would suddenly return, he got back to his brother's room. He walked in as quietly as possible in order not to draw attention. Luckily, Jeff sleeping. He got next to him, sparing a glance at him and then grabbed his arm, an intense surge of power passing through one body to another. And so did the visions of experiments, of injuries and blood, of death.

Overwhelmed by the visions and the power itself, Charlie held on tighter, as if somehow for support. Due to the pain in his arm, Jeff opened his eyes, at first confused but soon enough understanding what was going on. Jeff immediately tried to pry himself out of his brother's grasp but to no avail. "Charlie, what are you doing? Let go!"

"So you won't have to suffer anymore."

"Not like this, Charlie. Not like this, let go." Jeff begged him again but Charlie didn't- rather couldn't- hear him. Neither could hold out for too long. The imbalance of power was greater than they have ever been used to. In a matter of seconds, Charlie and Jeff were laid unconscious.

============

To everyone's relief, Charlie's daring move had the best possible outcome. Some days after Jeff's discharge from the hospital, tests were done to both him and especially Charlie for any unwanted and serious side effects but there were no signs whatsoever. Of course, Charlie would be monitored thoroughly while getting used to it, learning to control and navigate such a strong power but everything was okay.  On Jeff's part, having his power taken away caused no complication to his physical or mental state which consequently didn't affect the pregnancy in any way. A literal gift after years of pain, though Jeff had some reservations. After all, remnants of his power could still linger without a trace.

"Alan?" Jeff raised his voice trying to locate Alan in the house as he entered.

"Couch." Alan stretched his head up to glance at him. "How is Charlie?"

Jeff approached him from behind, his hand on the other's shoulders lightly massassing them. "A bit better than yesterday. Getting used to it can take a very long time. What are you looking at?" he pointed to the tablet.

"Setting up new training schedules for Dean. Gonna push him harder. He's doing well but it is still his comeback, so gonna figure out what rotation works best."

"Working hard as always...I kinda get heartaches seeing you handle all the work."

Alan lifted his eyes up, offering a little smile. "Absolutely not."

"Oh come on."

"But I guess I need to recharge a bit." he looked up again.

"Recharge you say?"

Jeff climbed on the couch, curled up next to Alan and wrapped his arm around Alan's shoulder in a tight embrace. "Battery charged yet?"

Alan caressed his arm as he pretended to think. "About 70 percent."

"Only 70? Unacceptable. It needs to be maxed out, we have to up the dosage."

So Jeff climbed on Alan, his arms wrapping once again around his neck and face nuzzling against the crook of the alpha's neck, as Alan hugged him back, almost as if someone would come up and snatch the omega away. A few seconds later, the younger withdrew. "So, how's that?"

Jeff leaned in and kissed him, the kiss deeper than Alan had anticipated but enjoyed regardless.

"Fully charged."

"Then maybe I should hang around the garage and be your charger."

"Another excuse for me to show you off wherever I go. I'm really spoilt for choice." he kissed Jeff's jawline.

"It's so nice we get to hug like this... Without any fear of any visions of the future. It surely feels surreal that I finally do this. Live in the moment and only dream of the future, not try to fight back." Jeff confessed. "Now I get to hold you and soon enough our baby without something spoiling the moment."

Alan hummed softly in agreement as he slowly pulled them up -so that Jeff wasn't leaning too much- hugging him again and resting his head on his mate's chest. "I've always been worried about your power hurting you. Even more this last month. When you got into the crash, it was so scary. I couldn't breathe knowing you two are in danger. I'd rather be the one who got hurt..."

The other caressed his cheek with his thumb. "I'm happy I do not have it anymore. But now, it feels like everything's falling on Charlie instead."

"It's ...a weird situation, but all of us will help him, like we did and do with you. You two are strong." Alan placed a peck on the corner of Jeff's lips and then glanced at him lovingly. He also noticed the other was thinking, almost concentrating on something. "What?"

"Nothing." he shook his head, lips forming a tiny smile.

"That was some thinking for nothing." the alpha joked.

"I'm just trying to catch it."

Alan titled his head in question. "Catch it?"

"I think... I'm not too sure yet but I think I can feel the baby moving a little."

"You do!?" Alan's eyes lit up

"I think. It's still early for a kick or an intense movement like that but they say you can maybe feel a fluttering sensation." Jeff explained as he watched Alan's hnad lightly touch the baby bump.

"So about a month till we can feel them kicking."

"I guess, yes."

Alan's phone began ringing. He got it out of his pocket, took a look at the caller ID and then silenced and tossed it to the side.

"Who was it?"

"Nobody. They can call later. Now I have some overdue kisses for my child." he said, gently scooping Jeff up and laying him down, leaving kisses on his belly.

The hospital or whoever else could wait. He doesn't have time for this. His family comes first.

Chapter Text

'He'll leave X-hunter alone. Everyone goes their own way no one loses anything. Think about it."

He should have punched Winner right then and there. How dare he come find him, flaunting the enjoyment on their suffering and helplessness. It made Alan furious. He should have cursed at him and left.

But he didn't. He was desperate. Desperate to find Dean, to ensure he was alive after their plan to rescue Charlie- although successful- had taken an unexpected turn. Desperate to somehow help Charlie. He had to keep everyone safe. Find out what the hell they wanted from them or, at least, get a lead on them.

So he let Winner lead him to their hideout, now standing in front of Tony.

"Would you look at that!" Tony smiled as he put the gomoku piece down to the board. "Blessing us with your presence."

"Cut the pleasantries. I want Dean out of here and you out of our lives." Alan cut straight to the point. "What do you want?"

Tony leaned back on the couch, slowly looking the other up and down, as if inspecting him, the mischievious smile not fading away from his expression. "So willing to meet me though...You must truly be at your limit, Alan"

Alan didn't answer. He stood silent, waiting.

"Charlie's blood."

Alan wanted to laugh. "You want me to bring you Charlie's blood? Like I can't think of twisted ways you want to use it. You're out of your mind if you believe I will do so. You have hurt all of them more than enough." He turned on his heels, about to walk away.

"Suit yourself. How is Jeff?"

Alan stopped dead in his tracks. As best as he could, he remained calm. "Why do you care?"

"Am I not allowed? He was one of my favourite kids."

"And here I thought you only worshipped the ground Babe walks. After all, you don't have the right to play parent. You've done more good to them rotting away than the supposed safe life you offered them."

"Getting worked up over a simple caring question..." Tony shook his head as if disappointed.

"I'd rather cut my veins than tell you anything about Jeff."

"Ah...there's the alpha instinct to protect your infatuation. Probably boyfriend by now, judging by that day at the auction, a literal human shield for him. Truly fascinating... And I believe you are his type too, so I doubt he would reject you."

Tony rose up, taking slow steps towards him. "He is one of my best. A cute presence. An even greater asset. Just imagine what a bidder could offer for a powerful- with the ability to see into the future- omega."

Alan immediately launched at him, grabbing him by the collar of his shirt, ignoring the gun Winner pointed at him. "If you dare lay a finger on him, I will tear your throat out myself."

"Happy to indulge in your fantasy if you are that certain about the outcome."

Alan was fuming, his blood boiling. But he was scared. Tony wanted to use Jeff for his sick and disgusting plans. He needed to protect him. Keep Tony away. No matter how. He needed the other to believe Jeff still possessed his power. He could actually very well reveal Jeff had lost his power now but then, Tony would suspect that there is something more. It would be a matter of seconds before Tony might reach the conclusion of a child factoring in this situation. He needed him to be unaware of their child. He had to protect them. Even if that killed him.

"Charlie's blood and myself as a test subject for your skill- enhancing drug. You get what you want and you have to leave each and every one of us alone. For good. This one condition and we have a deal."

He hated it. But he didn't have any choice. He knew very well that providing the other with the blood would only bring more casualties but he would try to reason with them, depsite the betrayal and they could buy some time till he used it against them for whatever. Tony would not try to abuse Jeff. And if he was lucky enough, the experiments he would be subjected to would most likely give him a stronger body. An advantage to this literal power-play.

He had to protect his friends. He had to protect his mate and unborn child. He would offer himself as sacrifice, even if that literally kills him. He preferred to do so than be helpless. He owed them this much.

Tony's lips curled into a smile. "Deal."

Chapter Text

Jeff walked towards the small, secluded lounging area at the laboratory, meeting up with Babe. "You seem deep in thought, thinking about what Chris said?"

Babe rose his head, watching the younger take a seat opposite of him. "Can you blame me? The witty American turns to be not only Way's twin but Tony's biological son too." He huffed. "Dozens of orphans by his side but he abandoned his very own kid."

"He had warranty if the product was defective." Jeff entertained, making Babe laugh.

"God, don't make me laugh. This is a sad issue already."

"Well, all of us were spare parts for him. We are only valuable because we have powers. Even Kenta suffered without having any ounce or sort of power. Chris was blessed to have been abandoned."

"Speaking of, was I the only one who thought Kenta was actually his son?"

"Nope, I did too and I figured it out embarrassingly late. Hope we can have a lead on this research though. He is the best chance we have."

"Seems logical but... I can't help but be skeptical." Babe frowned, leaning back on the couch."

"We have to trust him. Like I said, he is the next best candidate since neither of us could be tested nor there was progress with Charlie or Pete."

"At least we may be able to fight him with his own blood or whatever we manage."

"We can only hope so." Jeff took a sip of his drink.

Babe stood up. "Popping to the toilet real quick. Be right back."

"Don't worry about chaperoning me. I have this one keeping me company." he placed a hand on his stomach.

"And here I thought you liked my company." Babe joked. "Want me to bring you anything by chance? I think I can get something sweet."

"No, I'm good. Thanks."

The other gave him a thumbs up and walked away, allowing a moment or two of silence for the other to enjoy. No sooner had Jeff started thinking it was too quiet for his liking than Alan ran back in there, carrying Charlie unconscious in his arms.

"What's wrong?!" Jeff asked, following Alan right behind to the nearest bed there was. "What happened to Charlie?"

Alan laid Charlie down. "I don't know. I found him unconscious in the hallway."

"Charlie?! Can you hear him?" Jeff shook him lightly but the other didn't move at all.

"What happened ?" Babe's scared voice echoed, quickly kneeling next to Charlie and grabbing his hand. "Charlie! Charlie can you hear me? Alan, what happened?"

"I don't know." Alan said, unaware of what was happening. "I found him unconscious on the floor as I was coming back."

Babe called out Charlie's name again, trying and hoping to get him to open his eyes. Just when Alan was about to go find Chris or any other person to help them, Babe let out a relieved sigh seeing his boyfriend wake up and meet his eyes. "Heyyy, gosh Charlie you scared us. Are you alright? Do you feel weird? Any pain?"

Charlie stared silently, almost uncomfortable. "Do I know you?"

All three looked at each other in disbelief. Charlie can't have possibly forgotten who Babe is... Surely they must have misheard him. "It's me, Babe. I'm Babe. Come on, Charlie, you know who I am, don't play with me."

Charlie turned to Jeff. "Jeff, where are we? Who are these people?"

"Don't play with us, Charlie. This isn't funny." Babe reprimanded while he himself tried not to lose hope.

Charlie was scared. Jeff was really at a loss. "They are our teammates. Right now, we're at the lab, working on the dissolving serum. Does anything ring a bell?"

"No...I don't remember..." he shook his head.

"You don't remember anything before you fainted? Nothing at all?"

"Papa, do you remember Mama?" Babe called them by their nicknames in a desperate attempt to jog Charlie's memory, yet, the latter was growing more and more anxious about this 'unfamiliar' person being all over him.

"Charlie, " Jeff had him pay attention back to him, "this is your boyfriend, Babe. And this is Alan." he pointed to his mate.

Charlie looked at the two alphas with no interest whatsoever. He really just wanted to be out of here. He groaned in pain, pressing his hand on his head trying to handle the headache.

"Let's not pressure him for now" Chris' voice was heard before getting closer to them. "He should get some rest first. Allow him to get him settled and we'll discuss this in a moment."

-------o--------

Pete turned his head to the side, spotting Chris walking down the hallway to meet them." Chris, how is Charlie?"

"He's doing okay. At least for the moment being."

"What could have happened to cause this all of the sudden?" Babe asked.

Chris removed his glasses for a second to wipe them off. "From what I can tell, it's likely sudden -onset memory loss. Possibly acute dementia."

"Looks like Charlie pushed his powers past the limit." Jeff sighed. "That may have triggered this condition."

"So what should we do now? How we help him?" Alan asked.

"First things first, I'll consult a neurologist to be sure we don't cause any damage by mistake, given the unique situation. Once we know more, I'll keep you all updated. But we do need to monitor him."

"Uncle," Babe turned to Alan, "can I stay with Charlie tonight?"

Alan let out a rather sad laughter. "It's really not up to me. But I do believe that Charlie won't be that comfortable with someone he can't recognize. For this day or the next, you and I are like total strangers for Charlie. Only Jeff can stay with him. He is the closest to him so he will feel more safe."

"I know... but I'm worried his condition might get worse."

"How about we do some sort of shifts?" Jeff suggested. "I will stay tonight here in any case, so you can either stay with me now or see him in the morning. I think the second scenario could work a little better cause I'll be able to explain a few things to Charlie."

Babe gave a slow nod and Jeff offered a smile to comfort him. From the corner of his eye, he caught Alan's quick frown. "Why the frown, love? Weren't you the one telling Babe that I should stay?" he teased.

"I just don't want to leave you alone. What if you need something?"

"All dramatic..." Jeff shook his head. "The only thing I will probably need is dinner, which I can always order too. You can drop by and bring me food though. But honestly I shouldn't even allow you that. I'm still mad at you for deciding to skip surgery and not telling me."

Alan was about to say something but Babe patted his shoulder. "Yeah, can't help you with that. Have to take the loss."

"But honestly, guarding Charlie and expecting him to remember anything will do him no good. So go home and rest. Should anything happen, I'll give you a call."

-----------o---------

Late at night. Jeff was laying on one of the couches scrolling on his phone and occassionally checking up on his brother since he hadn't woken up yet. Either Charlie was exhausted or Chris had probably slipped a sort of sedative which might actually be helping him relax.

He got up and stretched, walking around the lab as he gazed around the place. His phone buzzed at one point so he fetched it out of his pocket and started typing something.

"Jeff?"

Jeff whipped his head around to see his brother standing some feet away. "Hey, your awake." He got closer. "How do you feel?"

"I'm... okay."

"Is there any pain? Headaches or something?" Charlie shook his head. Jeff smiled. "That's good."

"Where are we?"

"At the lab brother Pete has set up. A safe space, worry not."

"For what?"

Jeff was about to speak when one of the doors opened and Alan stepped inside, waving at them as their attention was on him. The two approached him, although Charlie seemed hesitant in his steps and very suspicious of the sudden appearance.

"I thought you would be in bed already." Jeff gave a smile.

"Yeah, I know that's what I wrote in the messages but I couldn't help it. I wanted to make sure everything is alright." Alan handed him one of the bags he was holding. "I brought two blankets in case you feel cold and I cannot have you starve so I made food." he motioned to the other bag as he set it down on the table near Charlie. "I made your favourite side too, Charlie. Only the second time I'm making it but I hope I did just right."

Charlie didn't respond. Just stared at Alan. With anger, as both Jeff and Alan noted but the latter tried not to think too much into it. "So, eat up and get a good rest. Ah, there are also snacks in there too. Figure it would be a good time to get these new chocolate bites you had an eye on."

"And here I thought I wasn't that hungry. I have to say, perfect timing."

"It's one of my duties. I'll get going now."

"Let me see you out." Jeff said.

"There is no need. If you need anything, call me."

"I will."

"Goodnight." Alan held Jeff by the back of his neck, kissing him on the lips and bending slightly to kiss the baby bump too.

Jeff watched his mate leave until he closed the door then turned his attention back to Charlie. "Let's eat, shall we?" he prompted, slowly opening the lid of one bowl to see what Alan had brought them. He gave a quick glance at the other, seeing he was looking at him up and down, thoroughly examining him, anger still in his eyes but also sadness, as if Charlie was about to cry. "Charlie, what's wrong?"

Charlie grabbed him by the arms. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry, so terribly sorry. I couldn't protect you. I couldn't protect you from him. You...you had to suffer...But everything will be alright. I'll get you out of here. We'll go somewhere no one can find us. We'll find a way to undo the marking. And this baby...will always be yours. Yours only, not this bastard's. We'll escape, Jeff. One way or another."

"What are you even talking about?" Jeff couldn't hide the disbelief and offence in his voice.

He almost wanted to slap him. Go off on him for insulting Alan and for the implied suggestion of giving up his baby from Charlie's pause when he mentioned it. But then it clicked. The only people Charlie remembered was him and essentially Tony. So, timewise, in Charlie's mind, they haven't met the team yet and are still hiding from Tony. Thus, he thinks that Tony managed to captured them and sold him to Alan who apparently had forced both marking and pregnancy.

"No,no, Charlie. You haven't down anything wrong. We are not in danger either. Hear me out, will you?" He spoke softly.

They sat down and the younger began explaining what had happened up until now. He knew Charlie would need time to process all this information but at least it would set some things straight and clear up misunderstandings.

"That was a lot...But I am really happy we are all free of him, even though there is still trouble."

Jeff passed him the bowl with the side Alan had prepared, picking his own right after. "Sometimes I'm afraid I'll jinx it with my happiness." He paused to take a bite. "Gosh, I really needed that."

The other grinned at the sight. "I can correctly assume the mere thought of him or sound of his name is enough to make you smile. He loves you so much."

"Half an hour ago, you looked at him like you wanted to tear him apart."

"In my defence, if he was an abusive bastard, he could have pretended because I was there."

"Alan may pretend other stuff, like not hearing you disrespect him or similar things but his love and care for people close to him is never pretentious. Any possible thing I can think of to describe his love for me will just be an inaccurate comparison. Like it transcends any binary. He had told me, with a confidence I couldn't even question, he would get me out of the cave I was in and he damn did it. He took me out of a prison I thought I would never really escape. He offers his heart and soul to me like I'm the only person in his world. He is my safe space. Falling in love with Alan was the best thing in my life. And it is becoming better with this little one." he gently rubbed his lower abdomen.

"This is all that matters. That you are happy."

Jeff hummed softly. "I am. Come now, let's eat while it is still hot."

Chapter Text

"Dove?" Alan called, closing the front door behind him.

A bit of silence for a couple of seconds. Then Jeff spoke. "I thought the meeting would take much longer than this."

"Thought so too." Alan turned to find him on top of the staircase. "But apparently, there was already an agreement between the sponsors which made my job much easier."

"That was surprising. Good for us."

The older smirked. "I absolutely love admiring you from every direction but don't you think you are being too harsh not coming down?"

"Why don't you come up here, pretty boy?" He leaned on the banister, tilting his head a little and winking.

Alan put his hands in his jacket's pockets and slowly climbed up the stairs, never losing eye contact. Once he reached the top, Jeff rose up and approached him, trying to be sneaky with a kiss and leave but Alan wrapped him with his jacket, still not bothering to take his hands out, lightly rocking them side by side before enveloping the younger in a proper hug. "You are so squishy."

"Me, baby, or both?"

"Mostly you for the time being. Baby will be sick of me in due time."

"I can already imagine fighting about who gets them longer." Jeff giggled. "But honestly I'm not gonna be any better. Poor baby will despise us...Have you eaten? Want to heat up something?"

The other shook his head. "Maybe later, I'm not really in for it now. So...what exactly is trying to load on the TV?"

"There's an update in my game, should be done in five or so minutes. Why don't you have a bath to freshen up and come join me?" Jeff said, taking off his mate's jacket and tapping his finger lightly on the other's cheek. "I'll go heat up dinner."

"I'll be quick." Alan turned around to head to the bathroom.

Soon enough, the couple were sitting down on the couch, plates with food in front of them at the coffee table, Jeff snuggled up on Alan as he played while Alan watched him- also going through some work emails here and there.

"Did I miss anything?" Alan focused back on the game as he put his phone down.

"No, they still talk." Jeff kept pressing once again the skip button so the dialogue could wrap up faster.

'Won't you miss important information like this?"

"I skim through it but whenever I see something familiar or attention-catching, like further lore or whatever, of course I'll read it normally or at least slow down." Jeff clicked a few more buttons once the game allowed player mode again and handed Alan the console. "Want to play?"

"Um...sure."

"Don't worry, there won't be any boss fight, I dealt with it. Maybe some smaller fights but just follow the quest guide." Jeff grabbed his plate and continued eating.

Minutes passed by, enough of a time for Alan to have completed the quest. That is if he wasn't stopping by every character that could talk and check every clickable thing possible. "Just go talk the the guy already."

"But that noticeboard seems important."

"Most of the time is like tabloids but you don't even check them in real life unless told so. Why the need now?"

"There might be gossip."

"Move on from the noticeboooard. This is the third time you read the same thing."

"Maybe there's a hidden achievement."

"Go finish the queeeest." Jeff groaned as he playfully shook the other's arm.

Alan's phone buzzed for a split second. He picked it up and passed it to Jeff to check who it was, as he continued with the game.

"Sonic says you have a file to send him."

"Ah, yeah that. Trade." Alan gave him the console and took his phone back. "Ah, dang, have to take a photo of it. Be right back."

Alan stood up and headed upstairs to the bedroom. He looked around the room in search of the thing but for whatever reason he couldn't find it. Maybe he had misplaced it. He tried to think of possible places as he searched for a second time. "Jeff?" he rose his voice, trying to catch his attention.

"Yeah?"

"Is my jacket by chance somewhere near you?" he asked, getting out of the room.

"Yeah, next to me. Why?"

"Can you see if there's any type of paper in the inner pocket?" he asked, now standing on top of the stairs pausing for a moment, trying to remember if he left it anywhere else and also give the other some time to check. Suddenly, his eyes widened and quickly went down to prevent him from looking. "No, wait, don't-"

But unfortunately, he wasn't quick enough. The small black box was already in Jeff's hands.

Jeff stared at it, then turned to look at his mate. Alan smiled and got closer. 'Another time would probbly be better but why wait any longer?' He got down on one knee in front of his partner, glancing at him lovingly, his hands cupping Jeff's own before slowly taking the box from him and opening it up to present the ring within. "Will you marry me?"

Jeff, although he stood there, speechless, couldn't hide his smile. "Yes."

Alan took out the ring and put it on Jeff's finger, kissing it and then lifted himself up just enough to reach his lips and kiss him. "I love you."

"I love you too." Jeff smiled softly, his hand caressing Alan's cheek, the glimpse of the ring on his finger a rather endearing detail. "I hope I didn't ruin whatever arrangements you had in mind."

"You can never ruin anything in my life. Only make it better." Alan kissed him once more. "Maybe I would have liked something more grande but the only thing that matters is that I love you dearly and you are by my side and no matter what the future has in store, I want to go through it all and spend my life with you."

"I wouldn't trade you and this life we have together for anything in the world. You can't escape me."

"I have already surrendered to you."

"I don't think I even tried to run away from you either."
