Chapter Text
"Holy crap! You're freaking gargantuan!"
You flinched from a high-pitched voice next to you, making you instantly huddle up in your big sweater and bringing your rain coat close to you. As you followed where the random voice came from, there seemed like there was nothing, until you looked down. You noticed a child staring at you in awe.
"Mom! Look! She looks like a giant doesn't she?"
"Stop it S-oh."
The mother stopped herself as she took a good look at you. Her eyes widening as her head raise higher and higher by the second, as if she about to witness the most horrifying thing in her life. What she was witnessing, or what she's able to see, were two huge muddy rain boats and a massive yellow rain coat that completely cover your form. However, what really caught the woman eyes were (F/c) glowing orbs. No face, no hair, nothing. Just pitch black and glowing orbs. Seeing this send shivers down the woman spine, while her son continues to stare at you in awe.
There was a bit of an awkward silence between you three which the mother soon realized. She made a fake cough, "Um...sorry about my son! You know how kids are! Full of energy and never know how to control themselves!", she awkwardly laugh. You stayed quiet as you just stared at the two individuals, making the mother more nervous.
"Um...goodbye!", as the mother grabbed whatever she needed, she then grabbed her son hand and walked off as fast as she can.
You stared at they're retreating form for a little bit as you went back to what you were doing, staring at different sets of frozen crustaceans. You didn't want that awkward moment from earlier to spoil your mood knowing you and your whole family going to be having a huge feast soon. You were craving Japanese Spider crabs the most right now, they had a lot of meat while also having a sweet taste to them. However, you debated on this. You always choose the same crab and your family tends to complain about it. You grumbled, remembering the many whines and groans from all your siblings and relatives comments. Just so that doesn't happen again, you decided to choose other kinds of crabs, which were some Snow Crabs, King Crabs and Blue Crabs, types of Crabs that most of your family enjoys eating.
You asked the employee to grab the crabs that you decided to buy as well as wrap the crabs up and put them in a bag. As you wait, you turned around to look at the wide scenery of the supermarket. You were just going to mindlessly look around as you noticed quite a lot of people giving you uncomfortable stares.
You shuffled around a little, feeling uncomfortable from the amount of people staring at you. You assume it was the way you were standing. You had your back hunched over, your hood completely shadowing your face, making your eyes glow quite significantly. Many of the people assume you were some Lovecraft creature, such as the Yellow King. You decided to straighten your back, but the people around you were still giving you uncomfortable stares. If you were correct or just being paranoid, there were even more stares now.
"Maybe take that hood off of yo head (L/n).", the stocker clerk spoke.
You turned around to face him, tilting your head in confusion. The stocker point at himself, doing some kind of sign where he's taking something off.
You weren't sure what he meant still but decided to take off your hood. As you pulled down your hood, a pair of huge and long (F/c) tentacles and two pair of clubs pop out.
You turned around again to see some of the once citizens giving you uncomfortable stares flinched as they quickly walked off or went back to their own business.
You raised a 'brow' as you looked back at the stocker, "Why they gotta look at me that way..."
"Well, the way you were dressed as how you stand did made you quite suspicious looking. Most villains dress dirty with a significant feature to them. The way you looked before made people believe you were going to commit some heinous act or something. Honestly, I can't blame that they were staring at you."
You flinched from his statement, you huddle inside your sweater, your beak biting the edges of your sweater neck area, "I...I don't look that threating...I'm not even that tall to begin with...", you mumbled.
The stocker chuckled, "Yeah, a 8'8 foot tall girl definitely ain't tall."
You grumbled at the man’s comment, "Well, that doesn't mean they should stare..."
"Yeah it's rude, I get that, but do you gotta have that huge face mask and huge ass rain coat on? I get that it's raining right now, but it's not that bad. You should've brought an umbrella or something."
"Because I'm allergic to the rain...an umbrella would not cut it..."
The stocker raised his brow, "Uh huh...", he finally finished wrapping up the crabs and processed to put them in a few plastic bags, "And yet you're a Squid mutant."
You puffed your cheeks as you furrow your 'brows' as you took the bag, "A Squid and Octopus mutant..."
”Oi kid, what’d I say about that smart mouth of yours?”, you just rolled your eyes as you walk off.
As you leave the stocker, you pull up your raincoat hoodie and face mask. You quickly headed towards the front of the store, but before you check out everything. You could sense the uncomfortable stares on you once again and now bits of mumbling. It was a bit hard to decipher since you didn't have your hearing aids on, but you tried to make them out as best as you can.
"Oh god...doesn't that guy look creepy?"
"So damn tall..."
Bet they gotta avoid a lot of doors..."
"I can't imagined being that tall...they probably never got on roller coaster rides..."
You tried to ignore the comments as best as you can. You're use to this sort of reaction ever since preschool. You're not sure why so many people view you with such imitation. In your opinion, you're a pretty nice person, though a very shy and nervous one. You have a hard time opening up to other people because you believe they'll find your biology and quirk strange, confusing and even a bit creepy. But you were raised very well in your household so you were never once tried to imitate people. Though, there was a certain incident way back that to this day you regret every single day, but you try to move on from it. You weren't yourself that day and you had no ill intention of doing such a thing.
However, even though you try your best to be kind as much as you can to people, no matter how much effort you put, you'll always been seen and treated differently. And one little comment sent shivers through out your entire body.
"Should we call the police?"
You snapped at whoever the person was, but due to your hearing, you weren't sure who was who. God, what the hell is up with these people? Does your appearance really make them feel that unease? The kids at your Kindergarten and Elementary school being scared of you is understandable. Kids aren't use to seeing things who could possible pose a threat to them, but adults? Adults that live longer than you, adults that have more life experience than you, adults that witness the worst aspects of their lives. And yet they believe just the sight of you should be contacted by the authorities? Yeah, you need to get the hell out of here real fast.
You exhaled and inhaled, trying to calm down. As you do, you slowly took off your hoodie, once again revealing your features. You didn't even bother if the people around you calmed down, because you hastily rushed towards the cashier. The cashier looked bored, just waiting for time to pass by, he occasionally checked his wrist watch, which showed he still had a couple of hours left till he's able to leave. He was about to groan in agony until your looming figure overshadow him. At first he looked annoyed, but soon his expression turn nothing but horror. To him, it looked like you were staring deep into his soul and if he doesn't do what you say, you'll kill him, but in reality, you just had a slightly upset expression. You didn't say anything as you placed the food Infront of the man, which knocked him out of whatever trance he was in. After a few minutes of scanning, he asked if you needed a recipient which you just hummed in response.
After that, you quickly grabbed your things and leave the cashier. You headed to the front door in a fast pace until you accidently bumped your head against the wall. You rubbed your head, feeling the swelling up bruise against your palm. You glanced up to see the exit sign, which now looked a bit dented. You looked down to noticed the exit door was a bit shorter than you.
You once again hear mumbles, whispers and snickers around you, making you huddle and bite the neck area of your sweater. Yeah, this tends to happen a lot through your life. You don't want to feel insecure about your height, but every time something like this happen, you can't help but have the urge to run and hide.
As you hunched over the exit door, you noticed it was already nighttime. It also seemed like the rain was becoming much more harsher, base off the loud drumming of the rain, which you grumbled at. Luckily you were underneath a roof so you weren't getting drenched. As you pull up your raincoat hoodie and face mask, you finally left the supermarket. You noticed many people around you started taking out flashlights or their phones. You would take out your own phone for light, but since you were already under the rain, you don't want to risk an allergic reaction. You furrowed your 'brows', knowing what you have to do.
The tissue skin that was once nothing started to glow. Tiny bits of bioluminescence spots emerging all over your body, giving you a radiating glow. The people around you noticed your glow from they're peripheral vision and they couldn't help but stare at such a beautiful piece of light, which had many started taking pictures of you. They were in such awe, in admiration, they had no ill intention whatsoever but you couldn't help but feel uncomfortable by such attention. You quickly picked up the paced as you scurry away.
You never like drawing attention to yourself, especially a huge crowd of people. Something about it just makes you feel...odd, but you're not sure if you have the words for it, at least for now that is.
"Oi! You there!"
You jolted as you looked around. Despite your radiating glow, it's range wasn't that big so the alleyways were still pitch black dark and what's a head of you was sort a dim, so you weren't sure who was calling you. The develop of the harsh rain didn’t help either.
Your body started to shake as you look around some more, "H-hello?", you stuttered.
"You!", all of a sudden a flash of bright light hit your eyes. To any regular person and depending on the mutant, they would cover they're eyes from such aggressive light, especially if it was up and close to them. However, for you, this didn't bother you at all. Yeah you flinched, but that's because it came out of nowhere. Due to both of your parents being Cephalopods, instead of detracting, you were instead attracted by the artificial light. Hell, even your own tentacles were attracted by it, feeling them ruffle around in your hoodie. But despite this, you were quite nervous whoever was flashing this light at you, making your body shake a lot and breathing go quicker.
"Y-yes...?", you mumbled.
"Why are you using your quirk?!"
"Just cause it's night time doesn't mean you should use your quirk, mister.", 'mister'? Who in the world is calling you that? You took a good look at the two individuals in front of you, taking notes of they're physical appearance. They were both wearing light blue button up shirts, cargo pants, and some type of cap-toe shoes. However, what really caught your eyes were the badges, saying something along the lines of 'Okinawa...force...'.Realization soon came hitting you like a truck. These guys were police officers. Fuck, you should've think twice using your quirk.
You tried to speak but what comes out is nothing but small mutters, which annoyed the two men, "Speak up sir. We can't understand a word your saying."
Why are they calling you that? It was starting to make you feel uncomfortable.
"I...I'm only using my quirk for light...that's all...", you said a bit louder, but due to the heavy rain, the police officers still weren't sure what you just said. Due to this, you placed your hearing aids in your ‘ears.’
"Sir, if you don't speak, we gotta take you to our place."
Are they trying to arrest you?! All you are doing is using your bioluminescence! Is it that serious?! You come across many kids through out your years just causally using they're quirks in public, some you would say sorta deadly to be used in public, but for some reason you using your body as light is a problem?
"I-I was just...u-using my body as light." This time the two officers heard your voice, eyes widen from how feminine it sounded.
One of the officers rubbed his neck sheepishly, "Well turn that off. Using your quirk without a license is an act of violation you know."
"I-I know but I don't have a flashlight and I don't wanna risk my phone getting wet."
The two officers just sigh, one of them placing his hands on his hips, "Well, sorry lady, but you have no choice. Either go buy one or we gotta give you a fine for using your quirk in public."
"But I don't have any money left...I used it for food..."
One of the police officers raised a brow, "Well, you should've think twice ma'am. You are an adult right? You should've known better not to use quirks in public."
You gave the officers a baffled look, but soon furrowed your 'brows.' Here's another thing that a lot of people outside your circle tend to mistake you as, people thinking you're a fully grown adult. Through out your life, people assume you were fully grown or looked 'mature' just because you were a lot taller compare to people. Some people assume you're a basketball player, a teacher, a mother with kids, and other things that usual associated with adults. This sort of misrepresentation became a thing ever since you were in Kindergarten. From what you remember, when you were able to talk properly and walk, many of the kids believed you were some early Elementary School student because of how tall you were, which led to them teasing you a lot.
They would say "Oh no! Miss Giant gonna stomp on us! Everyone run!" or "You sure you're three? My mom said when a dumb student doesn't do well, they never graduate." It got worst when you started Elementary School. Just like Kindergarten, many kids would believe you're actually a Highschool student. Hell, even some teachers would give you strange glances and even leave comments such as "It's crazy, I feel like I'm teaching a whole college student, but you're just nine years old! Haha!" What's worst, you had to wear clothes made for adults which really amplified the bullying. Stuff like that always leave you agitated. And this moment right here makes you want to break a wall.
"I'm a minor..."
The two police officer gave you a baffled look, one of them taking a good long look at you, "I don't believe it...you look way too tall to be some child."
You clenched your hands, you feel your tentacles moving around in your hoodie in a much more aggressive state, "Well I am...I'm starting Middle School tomorrow." You need to keep your cool, your parents taught you well enough to be respectful and mature when it comes to people in authority.
"Are you some kind of mutant?"
"Yes I am...", you answered.
"Mutant or not, no one should be this tall."
Are they even allow to ask such personal questions like this? Should it even matter at this point? Weren't these cops more concern about you using your quirk before?
One of the cops noticed how your hoodie was ruffling all around, his brows furrowed, sweat developing on his forehead, his hand reaching towards a certain...object, "Hey...what's going on with your head..."
This caught the attention of the other officer. His eyes widen from what he was witnessing, his expression saying 'That's some The Thing type shit.'
"Ma'am...if you're about to attack or pull some kind of trick...we will have no choose but to detain you."
Shit, you hate when your tentacles act up. You wish you could freely control them like your bioluminescence, but you can't. You see, despite you able to freely control your own arms and legs, your tentacles do not count. They basically have a mind of they're own and it's hard to control them at times. And when you mean it's hard to control them, you mean it's impossible to control them. It's like they're a separate being from you but said being is a feral, rabies lion that will kill anyone in a second.
"I-I'm sorry...these are my tentacles...they're hard to control..."
"Take off your hoodie."
You looked at them with pure bafflement, your body becoming more shaken by the minute, "I-I can't..."
"Why?", one of the officer asked, his voice sounding very demanding.
"If I take off my hoodie, I will get a terrible allergic reaction..."
The way the police looked at you made you wanna shrink and hide in a hole. You feel like an idiot for saying such a thing, but it's true! Way back when you were a toddler, your parents witness you suffered a terrible allergic reaction which led you be stuck in a coma for a whole week...well that's what your parents told you at least.
The officers looked like they were becoming annoyed, one of them glancing at the other saying 'Were dealing with that kind of case, huh?'
"Okay, ma'am...tell us you're name, address and phone number. Will look over any possible records about you and contact you, alright?", the officer stated, still furrowing his brows from how your hoodie continued to ruffle around.
This is just ridiculous. These guys are acting like you're about to attack them at any moment! You held your bag close to you, trying to find any sense of comfort in this situation. Why are you being treated this way? Was there something you said or the way you said it made them tick off? In your opinion, you were acting accordingly to they're demands despite how scared you were. You acted accordingly despite the fact them giving a masculine term and not even apologizing in the process. It's not you're fault you were born this way. But...maybe you deserve this. You did broke the law either way, how you're feeling right now shouldn't matter. Besides, now you're going to cause trouble for your parents when they hear about this. You fight off the tears as you told them everything.
"Thank you ma'am. Anyways, again, turn that...uh...stuff off, alright? There's street lamps to guide you're way."
You nodded, your body slowly turning to a dim glow to now nothing, the only thing the officers able to see are your tiny glowing eyes. The officers cringe at the sight, but you couldn't tell what expression they were making. You bow at a 90 degree angle and walked off.
The two officers stare at your form from a distance.
"...You think we might've went a bit rough on her. What if she is just kid this whole? You know how mutant quirks do to people you know."
"Like I care. Anyways, let's hurry up back to the department. I don't want a million cases popping up about some creepy ass tentacle attack."
You ran and ran. Tears overflowing your eyes, pushing and shoving anyone who came in front of you. You cancelled out any of all slurs being thrown your way as you continued to run as fast as you can. You just wanna get crabs and hang out with your family and friends, not a couple of bastards misjudging you. Why can't non mutants just view you as an equal or just treat you nicely? Is that so hard to ask? Why does your physical appearances matter to these people? Is what you are as a character what's really important? You only once committed a violent act, but that happen years ago! Specifically when you were a child! Children do things out of impulse! It's not like those same actions should describe someone of what they'll become in the future! This is all just too frustrating.
As you go to a certain point where it was just you and the open ocean view, you placed your hands on the railings as you stared at the vast ocean. Despite your hearing, you could clearly hear the crashes and waves of the water. Even if you never stepped foot in the oceans, something about it always intrigues you. The way the longitude waves just go on forever and forever was music to your 'ears.' The flowing of the tide as it washes any and all items into the sea abyss was like slowly washing all the troubles you had earlier. All the stares, all the comments, everything. It was like they were now swept up and now sank in the bottom of the oceans.
You stared longingly at the sea, it was so threptic for you.
That's when you gain an idea, 'Maybe I should try swimming this year...just to get my mind off of a things...'
After a couple of minutes, you finally made it to your neighborhood. You were just a couple of blocks away from your house, but you were close to some of your old childhood friends houses, Koda and Shoji. In actuality, Koda and Shoji were the only friends you ever had growing up since you three were the only mutants in this neighborhood as well as attending the same previous schools together. You tried to make friends throughout your life but due to your shy demeanor and imitating appearance, you tend to struggle creating close bonds with people. Koda also counts too. He's terribly shy where it's pretty impossible to get a word out of the boy. He tends to speak in sign language to new people as a sort of a reflex, so there be at times where newcomers either understand him or not. You of course can understand him both verbally and sign, though due to your hearing you two tend to speak in sign, unless you have your hearing aid.
Another fact is that Koda doesn't look threating at all when it comes to his appearances. How do you describe it? Well you know those kinds of people that look like they won’t even hurt a fly? Or how puppies and kittens look that you just can't help but protect them? Yeah, that’s basically how you describe his appearance.
Koda struggle to open up to people, but when you get to know the guy, he’s actually quite the chatterbox. Whenever you two head to any of the forest in Okinawa, Koda will go on for hours about each and every animal he spots. You always wonder where he got such a vast knowledge of this, but it could be due to the many biology related books when it comes to animals. But despite that, you don’t mind that side of him at all. Besides, he’s the one that helps you get a better understanding of your own quirk.
You decided to head to his house first than soon Shoji. You wiped any and all tears from your face as you knocked on the door, a single knock mind you, the door slammed right open as you met face to face with Koda mother, Mrs.Koda.
She had a similar appearance to Koda aside the evenly shaped rock horns, yellow puffy hair and makeup, “(L/n)! It’s so great to see you dear!”
You took a second to catch your breath, it was like you heard a gunshot near your ‘ear’, “H-h-h-hello Mrs.Koda! H-how did you know it was me?”
”Well I know you always make those hesitant knocks of course!”, she smile brightly while you sweat dropped from her answer.
”Why you here anyways?”
”Oh! I wanted to invite you two to me and my families celebration party.”
Mrs. Koda eyes sparkle, “Of course! Koda! Your friend (L/n) here! Come inside, you must be freezing from all this rain!”
As you come inside and place your raincoat on the hanger and taking off your shoes, you walked pass the open living room. Koda house was a two story household. The living room was pretty small, only consisting a wide screen tv, a U-shaped sectional sofa, a night-stand, lamp and a little fish bowl underneath said lamp. The kitchen next to it took a bit more space in the first floor. The second floor consists of Koda, his parents, and the bathroom. You ran upstairs and knocked at his door.
After a few minutes, Koda opens the door, "Oh! Hey (L-", before Koda could finish his words, you picked him up by the arms and give him a good long hug, leaving him quite confused. You rubbed you cheek against his cheek, mumbling "Koda..." Something clearly was wrong from how you're suddenly being all clingy all of a sudden.
"I-Is something wrong (L/n)? Are you nervous about school starting tomorrow?"
You shook your head, you walked over to his bed as you placed him on his bed and then sat next to him, "Lots of stuff happen while at the market...just...ugh! People can be so mean! What happen to keeping opinions to ourselves?!", you yelled, which sorta made his room shake a bit, luckily nothing fell.
Koda pet rabbit hoped on his lap, he began to pet it as he looks at you with concern. You usually don't start venting all out of no where, because you believe that's rude, but when you do, Koda knows something terrible happen. He ponder a bit, it'll be rude of him to change the subject. The best option is to continue the subject just to let it all out. Yeah you'll become agitated in the process, but that's the process of letting things out. It's like a large boulder being lifted off your shoulder.
Koda rubbed circles on your back, "What happen (L/n)?"
You let out a long exhaled, "People kept staring at me and making rude comments about my physical appearance..."
"Why?"
"Just cause I was wearing my raincoat I guess...the stocker said I looked similar to what a villain would dress up like..."
Koda eyes widen a bit, "That's...a harsh comparison..."
"I know right?! And even when I took off my hoodie, I still kept getting comments, like my height for example...and the way everyone stared at me...it made feel...like I was some...some..."
"A creep...?", Koda hands over his pet rabbit to you, which you obliged.
You nodded at his answer, "I hate those uncomfortable stares...I wish they would stop...it got a lot worst when I got outside...people began to record me and junk...they all look so happy and amazed when I turned on my bioluminescent and I feel like I should feel...I guess awesome about it or whatever but it just made me feel uncomfortable...I don't know why."
Koda just hummed, letting you continued.
"Then the freaking police showed up..."
"The police?!"
"Mhm! They were all up and on me! They first wanted me to stop using my quirk and I explain to them why I have to use it, and then went out on this whole ordeal by not believing I was a kid, calling me mister and what's worst they thought I was gonna attack them!", tears began to flow down your cheeks, "Me! They think I was going to hurt them! Not my fault I'm the size of a damn mountain! And now they going to do background checks on me! I...I...It's not my fault I'm born this way..."
Koda looked at you with sorrow in his eyes. Even though Koda, you and Shoji try yall best to live a happy life as mutants, it's hard to go through certain days with a smile when yall are dealing certain levels of bigotry. Koda had his fair share of dealing with harsh bullying when he used to live in Iwate Prefecture. Lots of kids would make fun of appearance, calling him ugly or purposely turning away cause they don't like looking at him. Many would compare his appearances to fictional monsters like Frankenstein and other creatures because they weren't sure what kind of Mutant Koda was. So Koda understand what's it like to be viewed differently when it comes to being a mutant, many mutants do.
You took a couple of long inhales and exhales, trying to calm down your nerves, "I'm sorry I exploded all of a sudden...I shouldn't of done that..."
"No, no! It's okay!", he waved his hands around, "It's terrible you delt with all of that (L/n)...I wish that sort of stuff could stop happening...things are gonna continue being rough for us, especially when were now starting Middle School...", he gives you a warm smile, "But you're with us. People who accept you for who you are.", then an idea popped up in Koda mind, "Oh! If it makes you feel better! Let's head to the forest and possibly find any new wildlife over there! I heard our Middle School close by one so let's try to go it over the weekend when you're free!", you giggled, of course this dork just had to bring up his love for animals.
You stared at Koda for a short minute as you slowly formed a warm smile, you hug him while placing your cheek against the top of his head, "You're such a good friend Koda."
Koda smiles as he tries his best to pat your head, until he felt your body flinched, "Ouch!"
"(L/n)!"
Note to self, even though this happens multiple times, never place your head on top of Koda head.
You ran back downstairs, Koda currently getting dressed. You noticed Koda mother wasn't around, 'She could be getting dress. I know she usually wants to dress to impress the place she visiting.', you giggled to yourself. You headed to the living room as you plopped on the couch as you waited for the two.
You noticed the fish bowl on the side as you leaned towards it, resting your arms and chin on the arm chair. Base off its physical appearance, it had long and slim fins while having a duo of green and blue colors, shining from the light. It was like the fish made out of some diamond material.
”If I remember from Koda lectures…you must be a betta fish…probably a Betta Smaragdina?”, you smiled warmly.
You stared at the fish longingly, eyes half lidded. Something about Betta fishes just…intrigued you. Perhaps how small and cute they are? Maybe how pretty their scales glow from the light? How each and everyone of them have a unique and beautiful physical appearance to them?
How helpless and defenseless they are?
As your hand hovers above the fish bowl, you felt a hard slap against your palm. You jumped as you snapped your focus on Koda's mother, rubbing your palm, “(L/n)! Did you even eat anything?!”
You stared at Koda's mother for a bit, your thought process slowly coming back. As you come back to your senses, you said, "I-I-I was just looking at the fish!"
"Then why is your hand hovering above the fish bowl?"
You give her a confused look as you look at the position of your hand, which made you immediately retracted. Just when you were about to apologize, your stomach instantly growled. The growling was so loud that you're pretty sure Koda heard it from upstairs. Five layers of (F/c) appear on your face as you clenched your stomach.
Mrs. Koda sigh as she placed her hands on her hips, "(L/n) you gotta control that hunger of yours sometimes! Did you took any snakes with you?"
You shook your head, "Well here. Take some of these Tuna packets.", she hands you some from her fridge as you thank her in return.
After a few more minutes, Koda came busting out of his room and flying straight downstairs. His clothes were untidy and he was sweating like a waterfall.
"(L-L/n)! Were y-you seriously going to eat my pet fish again?!"
You frantically shake your head, "N-no! I was...uh...mesmerize...?", you fiddle your fingers.
Koda knitted his 'brows', "(L/n), how long has it been since you last ate?"
"Oi! I'm certain to store my own food well for awhile like my parents now! It's that when me and my dad do community service, which last a long while, it burns so much of the food I store! So now I can only store as much food for an hour!"
"Well that shouldn't be surprising, you are still growing after all. Octopus can hold fat for at least four and a half years...but dang only an hour?!"
You sweat drop when he started bringing up biology out of nowhere, but that isn't surprising. You sigh as you crossed your arms, "I know...I'm just praying that party does the trick..."
Yeah. coming from your dear friend Koda, you have a bad tendency of your hunger taking over you. You can live without food for three weeks but not up to a month unlike your mother or farther. To prevent this, you tend to bring fish snacks with you when you're up and doing long activates.
"I swear you two argue like a married couple.", Mrs. Koda sigh fondly, "Reminds me of my sweetheart and I back in Highschool."
You and Koda both sweat dropped, "Friends argued too...", you both said in unison.
"Anyways, let's get going! I wanna be the first one to eat your mother cooking!"
"But we gotta get Shoji!"
"Well of course Shoji coming! Can't forget the ultimate encourager of yall little group.", Mrs. Koda giggle.
As you three left the house, you all headed to Shoji household.
Shoji was a few blocks away from Koda household so it shouldn't took too long to get there. Just like what Mrs. Koda said, Shoji the encourager of yall group. Despite his creepy alien like appearance, he has a kind caring soul that always looks at the positive when it comes life. He watches and protects you two at all times when it comes to exploring, so he sorta the babysitter too. It's quite admirable to you that Shoji goes through the worst kind of mistreatment of being a mutant compare to you and Koda, but he always stands on his ground and see the good in things instead.
"Man! Miriko freaking rocks!", Koda shouted with glee.
Your tentacles perked up as you hunched over, your shadow casting over Koda's form, "Who she fighting this time?!"
"Seem like some huge muscular guy!"
From your viewing, it looked like Miriko was fighting off not just one villain but three other villains. The first one was a huge Serpent, second one was a man with razor sharp claws and lastly a guy cover in slime. She was then getting dragged away from the other villains while the muscular villain was going back to what it seems to be a bank.
"Holy crap...so many strong looking guys...", even if Koda wasn't in this situation, he feel the humongous tension coming through the screen.
"Well Miriko gonna take care of those guys easily! She's the best hero in the whole world!"
"What about that handsome Hawks guy? I heard he's getting a lot of attention recently!", Mrs.Koda mentions.
"Hmm...don't know much about that guy to be honest...but Miriko the real deal!", you beamed.
Miriko used her pure physical strength by pushing the Serpent strong tail grip off of her. After a few seconds, she was finally free. She did a couple of back flips as she then processed to rush straight towards the muscular villain in a beeline formation at full force, clearly focused on the true threat at hand. The other villains couldn't catch up to her. As Miriko was only a few inches from her target, she landed a full force side kick, sending her target flying and crashing onto a nearby building, knocking out the muscular villain.
Mirkio felt her ears twitch as she snapped to her second target from behind. A tail was heading straight her way. Just when it was going to grab her again, Miriko grabbed the tail with all her might then raised the tail above her head, making the rest of the Serpent body instantly fly up.
Koda, you and Mrs. Koda eyes widen. Despite you watching this through your friends phone, the sheer power this woman express is indescribable. For someone her size, she not only able to knock out that muscular man who was probably close to All Might height, but also able to lift up a whole damn Twenty-five feet tall Serpent villain! Something about Miriko aura was unmatched to any other hero that you have ever witness. Maybe cause she an already high rank hero that despite being part Mutant she still prevails and is loved by many? Her quirk that, despite how basic it sounds, she does incredible use with it? Everything about her is just so inspiring to you. You want to gain the same level of self confidence and pride like her. If you had an interest of becoming a hero, you would love to be her sidekick.
Just when Miriko only had a few seconds left until her arms give out, she swings the whole Serpent body downwards towards the two other villains, crashing them like a fallen truck.
Miriko let out a loud sigh of relief, wiping off a pile of sweat off her forehead, "Yall damn villains always too easy to defeat! Haha!"
Your tentacles perked up even higher as you jumped for joy, making the ground below Koda and Mrs. Koda feet shake, "She so freaking cool! Ugh! I wish I saw that in person! But she lives in Hiroshima! It's not fair!", you whined.
"Yeah, be cool to see her in person! I would love to get an autograph from her...", Koda mutters the last part.
You sigh, "All the coolest hero's like Endeavor, All Might, Best Jeanist all live so far away..."
"Well you get to see all the cool action from your father, (L/n)!", Mrs. Koda chirped.
Your once happy beaming face slowly turned into a stump one, "Yeah...true.", as you sheepishly rubbed the back of your neck.
Koda glanced up to you. Guessing from your demeanor, you look pretty uncomfortable with the mention of your father.
"Um...well luckily we can get a lot of Miriko merch! She's pretty popular in some cities!"
When you heard that you formed a small, found smile. Any mentions of that rabbit hero always brings a smile to your face, "Hopefully if were lucky tomorrow, the nearby stores will be selling some plushies too.", he continued.
Your eyes shimmer as you beamed happily, "I hope so too! Hm? Oh! Were already here!"
Shoji house was a simple one story household. Nothing about it stands out compare to the other neighborhood houses. As you knocked on the door and waited for him, Koda spoked up, "Is Shoji parents here right now?", referring to a couple of pair of shoes missing on the front porch.
"Pretty sure Shoji parents work pretty late at night."
If you remember, Shoji parents are hard workers that take long night shifts. Due to Shoji appearances he struggle to gain any meaningful relationships aside you and Koda. So to counteract this problem his parents spend as much time with him during the day so he doesn't feel isolated when you two aren't around. However, knowing what's to be come soon, he's going to be completely alone very often. Perhaps be a good idea to visit his place as much as possible.
When the door finally open, Shoji was wearing his usual light green tanktop, army style pants, comeback boots and his iconic face mask. You never once question why he wore that mask all the time, but you never bother to ask. Koda never figured it out either, believing it could be personal.
"Hello (L/n), Koda and Koda's mother.", he bow, like the gentleman he is.
"Hey Shoji! You uh...sure going to be okay in that tank top? It's pretty drizzly right now..."
"Don't worry. I can use my arms and-"
"Oh hush young man! Get a dang coat and get under this umbrella!", Mrs. Koda scolded.
As if she had some brainwashing quirk, Shoji folded and grabbed a huge coat. It's way bigger than him but that could be due to his arm to easily slide through. You wonder how and where he got the thing...
You try to hold in a snicker, "You know the way you dress right now really reminds me of those rich influencers flexing their wealth."
"Hey don't tease him (L/n)!", Koda scolds.
"It's fine Koda...she isn't wrong though....", as he examines the clothing, "I kind of look like one...", he and Koda sweat drop while you just snicker more.
Shoji never minds a couple of teasing from you or Koda, though Koda hasn't done that at all through the years of they're friendship, It helps brighten his day a little. It's one of the things that show how comfortable he is in yall friendship.
"So Shoji! Have you seen Miriko fought those bad guy? She took down those guys with no sweat!", Koda beamed.
"Sadly I missed it. I had to get these clams ready and gift it to (L/n) parents.", Shoji showing off a huge box in one of his arms.
You eyes shimmer, your beak starts to to drool as your tentacles perk up, "Calms?! Shoji you kind soul! You shouldn't have!"
"For your relatives, (L/n)...", he sweat dropped, "Your mother called me and ask if she could have these for your octopi relatives."
You blinked a few seconds, it was like everything you knew was a lie, "R-right...I knew that..."
"Wait...that huge box isn't like video games or something...? It's just...clams?!", Mrs. Koda exclaim.
"Well I do have a lot of relatives Mrs. Koda...", you sheepishly chuckled.
Mrs. Koda gave you a baffle expression, "Well yes...but (L/n)...you only have like six siblings...and I'm pretty sure you're the youngest..."
"Mom did you forget? (L/n) has over twenty million relatives.", Koda stated with an unsurprised expression as if this insane information was normal to him.
Mrs. Koda mind went blank, "Excuse me?"
"But don't worry Mrs. Koda! All my relatives are mature and well taught!", you gave her a thumbs up with an happy expression.
Once again, Mrs. Koda stared at you both with an blank expression, "Twenty million?"
After a couple of minutes, you guys finally got to your house. Now your house was on a high cliff where you and your family get to have a huge ocean view, plus despite how average your house looked, it was humongous. Bigger then any huge mansion, walking in there feels like you're a whole ass Smurf. Your father requested this house for your mother and they're future children. Though you do wonder sometimes why your house have to be so far off from you and your friend neighborhood.
You took a deep inhale and exhale. The calming sound of the ocean wave as it crashes against the rocks calm your nerves just a little. You stare at the door, 'brows' knitted and beak quivering. As you knocked on the door, the door open revealing one of your younger relatives.
"(Y/n)!", she beamed, she was a two feet tall mimic octopus, a Thaumoctopus mimicus. She wrapped her tentacles around your legs as she starts to climb up to your shoulder, "You took too long!"
You giggle, "Sorry...uh...lots of stuff happen...but I picked up Shoji, Koda and his mom!", as they peeked behind you.
Just from hearing that alone your relative peeked over your shoulder, her tentacles perked up, "Hi! Shoji! You always bring snacks, what did you bring this time?"
"Clams."
Mrs. Koda smiled at this warm atmosphere, she glanced at her son to say something until she noticed his demeanor. He was sweating bullets, lip quivering and 'brows' knitted. Mrs. Koda was quite confused from this. She usually doesn't visit your household often due to work so she was lost in the dark.
"We better hide...", he mumbles, making Mrs. Koda more confused.
"Guys! Shoji brought a big set of clams!"
As if your relative was some sounding alarm, loud aggressive rumbling was heard from the distance. Mrs. Koda frantically panic, is there an earthquake happening right now?! She picks up her son bridal style and when she was about to make a run for it, she is immediately stopped by a sea of squids and octopus children. Each and everyone of them having their own unique colors, patterns and some even had spikes all over them. Mrs. Koda stared at the sea of children with pure bafflement. Her eyes were darting left, right, up and down too the point she was getting a whole headache.
Mrs. Koda placed her son down as she held her head, "I-I think I need to sit down..."
You couldn't help but let out a snicker. You can't blame her bafflement though, it's rare for her to see this amount of kids that are all related to you.
As you placed one of your relatives on the ground, you turned to Koda and Shoji, "I'm gonna find my mom and dad that were all here. Also...", you stretched out some of your tentacles and grab some of the kids that were climbing on Shoji, "you kids should know better.", you growler. Despite your scolding and scary attitude, you weren't acknowledging that a few of your relatives were already climbing on you, making Koda, Shoji and Mrs, Koda sweat drop.
You heard your mother and father voices coming from the kitchen, "Ah...I'll be back guys! You guys watch over the kids.", Shoji nodded while Koda was about to object, but sadly you already flew off. As you were heading there, the voices were becoming much more clearer.
"You promise you're completely free?"
"Yes dear, this whole night."
"Mhm...that was the same thing you said on our daughter last birthday party."
"Ah...! It's...It's because there was a huge villain attack!"
You stand behind a wall, outside the kitchen. You knitted your 'brows', but try to calmed down. This is a special day between you, family and friends. There shouldn't be no personal family conflict whatsoever. You shrug off any and all conflicts going on in your head and just when you were about to go up to them, the kids that were on you beat you to it.
"(D/n)! (D/n)! (D/n)!", they all said in unison.
Your mother and father flinched from the sudden outburst as they snap to them, "Oi! I thought you kids were playing outside!", your mother growled.
"We followed (Y/n).", they snitched.
You flinched as you peeked your head from the side, why were you so nervous all of sudden? You made the choice of seeing them anyways, so what's going on? Could it be the discussion they were having?
Your father, a Hapalochlaena lunulata, is a high rank hero and a respectable one at that. He has connections and close bonds to many pro hero's such as Kugo Sakamata and Selkie. It's quite funny that he has a close bond with them when Orcas and Spotted Seals are known to prey on Octopuses. They're bonds are so close that Kugo and Selkie have visit to yours and your siblings birthday parties many times, as long they're off of course.
Your farther hero name is 'King Octo' since he's well known for using his eight tentacles in battle while also saving people in the process. However, that isn't the only alias he goes by, despite being a very beloved hero, not everyone favors him, and that's coming from people who have a clear bias when it comes to him being a mutant.
And that name is 'Davy Jone's.'
A name that sends shivers to millions of villains, citizens and even some hero's. You can understand why villains gave him such a title, your father is an absolute force to be reckoned with, but you don't understand why some citizens or hero's call him that. Maybe because Octopuses known to be predators? Or that they tend to be sorta creepy? Or maybe you're just over thinking and that Davy Jone's is just a kickass name to have.
Despite all that, you are well aware how many people look up to your father. Hell, he's one of the reasons why Shoji wants to become a hero. So you have no room to complain about your own problems about him. They are nothing but small, irrelevant problems.
Your mother on the other hand is just a normal, everyday citizen. Use to be a stay at home housewife, but now that all her children, aside you, are fully grown up and living on they're own, she finally has a job to herself and goes out when she needs to. She's an Architeuthis dux, 15'8 tall while your father is 5'1 tall. She works as a chef, but due to her size she mainly does it outdoors. Despite her size, she still gets the job done by using her tentacles to handle the food as well as serving them.
You're aware what kind of abilities you got from your farther but you're still not sure what exactly your mother abilities are. She always told you it's exactly like your farther quirk abilities, but knowing the type of Octopus your dad is, you're pretty certain she has some hidden quirk hidden in her selves, one of them being bioluminescence. Though knowing many Squids are able to glow in the dark, you could just be thinking too much. There could be a possibility that you and your siblings could've manifested bioluminescence on yalls own. However, another thing that boggles your mind to no end was you and your mother sheer physical size differences. You are a lot taller than your dad, but way taller than all your siblings. Now Squids do tend to grow quite large depending the environment their in as well as species, but those are sea creatures. They have sentients, but they can't walk, talk, live out of the oceans like you or your family. Maybe you and your mother were just fed a lot as kids but you'll never know.
"Um hey...I brought the stuff you need mom. Also brought Shoji, Koda and his mom.", showing off the bag from the supermarket.
Your mother smiled as she grabbed the bag of food from your hand, "Thank you dear! How about you head outside while I do this, it'll be done real soon. Honey, you go with her.", the way she said the last part was a little demanding.
The kids already ran off, just leaving you three. Just when you were about to walk off, you felt a pair of tentacles wrap around your waist, soon realizing it's your dad who was climbing up on you, now nuzzling his cheek against yours, "Hey my little squirt! You forgot your dear old pa!", he chirped.
You give him a sheepish smile as you give him an awkward pat on the back, "Sorry dad. Just couldn't help to have mom cooking! Besides, I gotta make a hurry. I trusted Shoji, Koda and his mom to watch over the kids."
"Well, I'm sure that they got it handle! Especially Koda! Pretty sure you two use to babysit a lot of these kids during last summer! Hahaha!"
"Actually Koda not use to taking care of kids...I'm pretty sure you meant to say Shoji...", you corrected him.
Your farther blinked a few seconds till he slowly slide off your body. He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly while glancing away, "Uh...I-I-I knew that..."
There was awkward silence between you two while walking through the hallway. You never liked when things turn out this way, but what can you really say? You didn't do anything eventful aside picking up trash at an open park through out most of the day then had your shitty experience at the supermarket. Should you even bring that up? When you think about it, you already vented about it to Koda so you don't want to bring up any heavy luggage out of the blue. Besides, you don't want to stress out your farther when he already has an everyday stressful job...even if he's going to find out what happen very soon.
You rubbed the back of your neck, "Well...how's your day been dad?"
"Pretty swell! Finally off today to spend some good ol' quality time with my girl! Though we spend time together all the time! Haha!", you just gave him a sheepish chuckled as a response.
"How about you squirt?"
"Hm? Oh...uh...nothing."
"Aw! Surely something! What about your little cleaning duty at the park? Made any friends?"
"Um...I was a bit too nervous to come up to anyone...and they all looked busy so..."
"Aw come on squirt! You gotta get out of that shy bubble of yours! You're starting a new school tomorrow after all."
You started playing one of your club tentacles, glancing away, "I'm trying...but...I rather just be around Koda and Shoji...I feel the most comfortable around th-"
"But you've been friends with those two boys for years! Ever since they moved here even! Don't you want to make some friends that are...you know...girls? You need your own little girl group after all."
Your grip on your own tentacle tighten slightly, "It's impossible for me."
"For you?! Dear, you are the most sweetest, kindest, loving girl ever!", your grip tightens more, "And you're also the most beautiful girl in the whole world that I'm sure every boy will be swoon b-"
"Dad."
He flinched a little as he looked up at you. Your demeanor was dark. The way you stare so blankly as if you're about to blow a feus leaves a bit of a shiver down your father spine. He needs to be careful with his words, but what can he think of? He rarely gets to see you and the only time he gets to see you is just on Sunday. He doesn't want yall conversation to end so soon.
"Sorry dear...I...I just wanna be a good-"
"I shouldn't spoken to you like that. I'm sorry. Let's just...act like that didn't happen."
Your father knitted his 'brows', "(Y/n)...did...something hap-" , before he could finish his words, a loud scream was heard through out the hallways.
"Ah! It's in my eyes! It's in my eyes!", you heard Koda load screams from afar which sent your tentacles rising high.
"Koda!", you quickly snapped at your father, your frustrated expression saying, 'I told you I had to hurry!'
You ran outside, your farther right behind you. As you two got to the backyard, you thought one of your relatives might've done something, turns out you were right. What you were witnessing just now was Koda face completely covered in ink, "Oh god...anyone have a wet towel?!"
Shoji quickly looked around but couldn't seem to find any around. Just to not waste anymore time, he stretched out one of his arms, cupped a couple of water from the cold ice bowl and hold in front of you.
"Will this help?"
"It'll do for now..."
You came up to Koda as Shoji arm stretched some more, now between you and Koda. You pulled the edge of your shirt and dabbed it a bit in the water, then rubbed the cold shirt on Koda face. Koda hisses a little from the bitter cold but still thanked you and Shoji. While cleaning his face, you shoot all your relatives a harsh glare, "Who did this?!"
Kids being kids, each and everyone of your relatives pointed at one another, hell some of them even pointing at Shoji. This was not a shocker to you whatsoever, most of these kids were around three and nine so of course they'll pull this immature stunt.
"Well can one of you guys at least tell me what happen?"
All the kids sweated bullets, millions of excuses being thrown around, until Shoji decided to drop the truth, "One of your relatives jumped and accidently shot ink on Koda face.", as Shoji processed to pick up the culprit.
You raised a 'brow', "Jumped from what?"
"I-I heard an loud explosion..."
Everyone snapped they're focus on the culprit, which made him shake a lot more. This made you even more confused, did someone fucked up in the kitchen while your mother wasn't looking?
"Explosion? I didn't hear any explosion.", you spoke up.
Koda rubbed the back of his neck as he picked up his phone. He turned it on and showed a live video of what it seems to be a villain robbery, "Think he got scared from this..."
Everyone gasped from the sight, but your father looked the most horrified, "Shit...I should've had my hearing aids on this whole time...", he mumbled. Without saying a word, he instantly bolted. Using his tentacles he latched onto the wall as he quickly starts to climb while removing his clothes that revel his hero costume. When he got to the rooftop, he disappeared.
Everyone, aside you, stared at your father in pure admiration and awe.
"Holy crap that was so cool!'
"(Y/n)! Your dad is freaking awesome!"
"Man! Now I wish he took me with him!"
Many of them continued to praise your father. You can't blame them, your father is a pretty incredible. He saved countless of lives, both on land and sea. That's why he isn't just called 'The Octo hero.' He shows true authority in both worlds, a force to be reckon with. You're 100% positive he'll take care of this problem without breaking a sweat. Yet, deep down, this whole situation leaves you in a void of frustration.
Shoji noticed your demeanor, he outstretched one of his arms as it rest on your shoulder, "I'm sure he'll come back real soon."
You looked at him as you give him a small smile, though it came off more melancholic to Shoji, "Yeah...I'm sure he will..."
As you stared back at the rooftop, you didn't realized the slight stinging feeling in one of your hands and abdomen.
After the party ended, many of your relatives either stayed at your place or left. You hugged both Koda and Shoji, "Be safe you guys. You know how dangerous it is for us when it's night."
"Will be fine (L/n)! We all live in the same neighborhood after all."
Shoji nodded, "Thank you for the concern...but..."
You tilted your head from Shoji sudden response, "Your father hasn't come back yet."
"Ah yeah...isn't pretty rare for him to show up..."
You scratch your cheek sheepishly, "Guys...let's not worry about that. I'm sure he's just working with the police right now!"
Shoji and Koda see how different your demeanor is, but decided not to push it. They both nodded as the left, going they're separate ways. As you close the door, you first went to the living room. Multiple upon multiple picture frames of you through the years, Many of them have you smiling brightly with your relatives, mom, though it had to be edited a lot of the time, and your friends.
But rarely you see your father in any of them.
What's worst is that you see more of Kugo and Selkie than your own father.
"Don't worry I'm gonna give him a long talk when gets back."
You flinched as you turn around and looked up to see your mother, "You...you don't have to do that mom..."
"Gonna do it anyways.", she smirked teasingly. She thought a bit of teasing could do the trick but you just stand there quietly.
She rubbed your head with one of her tentacles, "I'm sorry honey...maybe tomorrow you and me can hangout?"
You just simply nodded, "Is...it okay you teach me to swim?"
Your mother hesitated. The way she looks at you tells you what her answer is, "Let's....let's think of another activity! Like, maybe that cute anime boys movie you really wanna see!...But can I ask why though? You know you have a bad allergic reaction (Y/n)..."
You ponder for a bit, rubbing back of your neck as you glanced away, "Well...I just wanna be in the ocean...I feel like it'll help me keep my mind at ease..."
