Oh Baby!

Summary:

Tim and Conner mess around in a lab and (accidentally) create a clone baby.

Notes:

I love them so much and I LOVE Tim Drake as a parent

Work Text:

“Your dad is going to kill me!”

Tim sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. Conner’s outburst was not helping the situation. They were in huge trouble and they both knew it, but it wasn’t like they had planned for this to happen! It had been a regular day in the lab when Conner got the bright idea.

Conner knew he was a clone kid, everyone knew that. He wasn’t ashamed of it, in fact, he didn’t think about it much. Sure, Lex brought it up sometimes, but that was about it. So when he mentioned it to Tim, they made the bright decision to try and figure out the science behind it. They took some blood and other DNA samples before getting to work.

It was 13 hours of work, trying to run simulations and tests to see how it all came together. The fact that Lex had figured it out without using magic was truly astonishing. They were at a loss, not even sure how to begin. In a desperate attempt to get somewhere with their work, they did a little bit of everything and mashed some buttons. (Of course, that was Conner’s idea. Tim was not amused.)

The computer started to alarm, a loud noise resonating from their testing chamber. Tim nearly fell over as he scrambled to it, pulling the door open. There, tucked inside, was a baby. A living, breathing, newborn baby. A girl, as small as a cantaloupe, with soft black hair and striking blue eyes. Tim nearly choked on his own breath, hands trembling as he carefully picked her up.

“Oh,” he mumbled. Conner was equally shocked, his eyes as wide as flying saucers. Of course those two hadn’t stopped to think about the repercussions of what they were doing. The little girl looked up at Tim before promptly bursting into tears.

“Shit!” Tim cursed, holding her close. Conner looked around in distress, realizing they had a real issue. He was freaking out until Tim snapped at him.

“Go fly and get some formula or something! And diapers- clothes? I don’t know, just get anything you can!” Tim instructed. The other nodded and promptly took off, flying as fast as he could. Tim looked down at the crying child, their child. He gently rocked her, making a soft shushing noise.

“It’s okay, shhh. Your dad will be right back, I know you’re hungry,” he whispered. Tim was feeling restless, nervously nibbling on his bottom lip. It was only a matter of minutes before Conner returned with bags upon bags of things. He scrambled to retrieve the formula and a new baby bottle. They were doing their best, even if Conner did have to google how to prepare formula for a baby. He made a bit of a mess in his haste, but Tim couldn’t find it in himself to scold the boy.

Eventually, he brought the bottle over and scooped the baby into his arms. Tim watched as the small girl tentatively took to the bottle, calming down slightly as she began to drink. He swallowed roughly, gazing up at Conner.

“What are we going to do?” he asked quietly. Conner met his eyes, shaking his head just a bit.

“I don’t know,” he replied solemnly. Tim nodded a bit, knowing they were both lost for words. The lab filled with a serene silence as the baby ate her food. Tim slowly reached out, gently petting her hair.

“Maybe… Sofia?” Tim said, tilting his head slightly. Conner raised his eyebrows, looking back at him.

“Sofia? But- if we’re doing this, what’s the last name situation?”

“I guess it would be,” Tim paused to think, “Sofia Wayne-Kent.” Conner’s lips twitched slightly before he managed a sharp nod.

“Yeah, I like that name,” he replied. The two of them looked back down at Sofia, taking in her soft skin and curious eyes. She had the same nose as Tim, but her soft freckles were a dead ringer for Conner. Tim still wanted to run some DNA tests, but he had no doubt she was 100% their child. It was quiet for a few moments before Conner gasped in alarm.

“Your dad is going to kill me!” Tim blinked a few times, rubbing the back of his neck before he chuckled. It was a strained noise, one that nearly startled him. He licked his lips before replying.

“Yeah- he probably would if it wasn’t for his no kill rule.”

“He’ll totally break that rule when he finds out what we’ve done! We’re teen parents!” Conner sighed dramatically. Tim groaned, slapping his hands over his face. Sofia must’ve found it funny, because she made little grabby hands for him. Tim immediately obliged, taking her hands in his. The situation was overwhelming, unplanned in the most possible way.

A baby wasn’t something they needed. Both of them were vigilantes, one of which could literally fly (Oh God, Tim hoped Sofia wouldn’t start randomly flying someday). A baby meant responsibility and time. Of course they had the money, Tim was a Wayne after all, but they didn’t have the mentally capacity. They were both 17, still in high school!

Sofia made a face, one that Conner had made many times when he was upset. Tim couldn’t help but smile, taking her into his arms.

“What’s wrong, little one?” he hummed softly. He remembered some of what he’d learned from the dreaded baby project in school. The baby needed to be burped after eating. He propped her up against his shoulder, gently patting her back. At the same time, Conner carefully tucked her into a soft blanket. He hadn’t been sure what size clothes she would need, so he bought pretty much everything in the baby store. He had Tim’s credit card, it was fine.

They needed a home, a nursery for Sofia. But they didn’t have that. What they did have though…

The safe house on the edge of Bristol was about as inconspicuous middle class as you could get. It was regarded as a vacation house for some business-savvy couple. But now, it was going to be used as a temporary home. A home for the three of them.

“I told Bruce I was going to stay at Titans Tower for a bit,” Tim mumbled as he dragged the crib into the corner. Conner hummed in response, holding Sofia in his arms.

“Good idea, I’ll tell my dad the same thing,” Conner replied. The room was already full of baby items, better decorated than any other part of the house. Sofia had been crying on and off all day, so much so that even coffee was failing to keep Tim awake. He had eyebags as dark as dirt under his eyes. Conner, ever the superboy he was, looked perfectly fine. It really wasn’t fair how much good those kryptonian genes did for him.

The walls were a soft pink color, the ceiling decorated with zoo animal stickers. Her crib was white with a simple pink sheet and the whole room seemed to follow a similar theme. She had enough clothes to last her several lifetimes, as well as a strong supply of formula and diapers.

“There’s like twenty containers of formula on our counters. Do those expire?” Tim asked under his breath. Conner shrugged, using his free hand to hold Sofia’s. It was surprisingly calm, despite the insane situation. They had gotten her a music machine that played lullabies, yet it was surprisingly calming for them as well.

Sofia’s eyes fluttered closed for a moment, a soft coo escaping her lips as he fell back asleep in Conner’s arms. He let out a relieved sigh, placing her in her crib. They were incredibly paranoid, considering everything they’d seen in their lives. They had the baby monitor all set up, their room right next to hers. It also helped that Conner could sense heartbeats. They left the door open, tiptoeing to the room one door over. It was much more plain, they hadn’t had the time to decorate it yet.

Tim fell face first onto the bed, letting out a loud groan. Conner just chuckled, crawling into bed next to him. They stayed like that for a few moments before Tim reached over, tucking some hair out of Conner’s face. There was a serene quiet in the room before Conner finally spoke up.

“I think we need to-”

“Tell our parents?” Tim finished for him. Conner shrugged, biting his bottom lip.

“I think it’s important. You know what all those mom blogs say, ‘it takes a village’ or whatever,” he mumbled. Tim chuckled, resting his hand over his face. He wanted to block the sun from his face, wishing he could sleep right about now. It’s funny how sleep had never been a priority for him until now. He moved closer to Conner, wrapping his arms around the man. He buried his head in the crook of Conner’s neck, humming softly.

“I guess we can, but if we’re going to tell them, we have to tell them at one time. I don’t want any of my brothers finding out about it from Bruce,” Tim mentioned. They snuggled closer under the blankets, enjoying the warmth they provided. After a few moments, Conner managed a small mumble.

“We should get some new blankets,” he slurred before falling asleep. Tim hummed, letting his eyes drift closed.

“This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever been invited to,” Jason muttered under his breath. Dick, Jason, and Damian were sitting on the couch. They all had different expressions, ranging from boredom to excitement. Dick was happy to be there, Jason was bored, and Damian never let his expression show (though he seemed to be enjoying the food they had provided).

Bruce was sitting to the side, his arms crossed over his chest. Just like Damian, he had the same blank expression. Clark looked somewhat pleasant, having a conversation with Jon as they stood to the side. Conner stood up, resting his hands on his hips before awkwardly moving them to rest behind his back. Tim cleared his throat, looking around.

“Uh- Bruce and Mr. Kent, thanks for being here,”

“Oh my God, who did you kill?” Jason asked. Dick elbowed him, making a shushing motion with his finger.

“This feels overly formal, can we cut to the chase?” Damian asked with a scoff. Tim shot him a look, which surprisingly worked to shut him up. The room filled with a few shaky breaths (that Conner soon realized was coming from him).

“So first of all, Tim and I have been dating for a few months now,” Conner began. Dick stood up abruptly before being shoved back down by Jason. Even Jon looked surprised, his eyes wide.

“You’re dating?” Jon exclaimed. Clark and Bruce seem equally shocked, although Clark was better at hiding it.

“Well congrats, I always thought Tim was the best of the bunch,” Clark joked, earning a brief snicker from Bruce. Conner and Tim looked at each other and the nervous look made everyone quiet down a bit.

“We also made a bit of uhh, well not an accident, I guess. Maybe we should call it a- unexpected surprise?” Tim said. Everyone looked at him, clearly waiting for them to spit it out. As if he was a robot, Conner shuffled out of the room.

“Just keep an open mind and uh- don’t yell, you’ll wake her up,” Tim whispered. Everyone stared at him, processing his words.

“Wait-” Dick started before Conner walked back in with Sofia in his arms. If the confusion on everyone’s face was evident, then Tim and Conner didn’t acknowledge it. Tim took Sofia into his arms, cradling him close to her chest.

“I can’t believe this! A fucking baby?” Jason asked in a combination of yelling and whispering. Damian was up in an instant, looking at the baby intently.

“She looks just like you two, how did that happen?”

“We were talking about the science behind how Conner came about, y’know, as a clone baby-” Tim began.

“And then we were messing with our DNA without thinking too much,”

“Obviously,” Jason cut in, earning another nudge from Dick.

“And we managed to accidentally figure out how to make a clone baby. Then we realized that meant we were left with a clone baby,” Conner finished. Bruce was glaring at the two of them, all the while Clark looked like he might pass out. Eventually Dick stood up, standing next to the pair. He carefully reached out, touching Sofia’s hair.

“So she’s biologically yours?” Dick asked for clarification. Tim nodded, looking up at him.

“We ran some more DNA tests just to confirm it,” Conner mumbled. Jon shuffled over, standing on his tiptoes to get a good look at her.

“She’s adorable!” he grinned.

“Her name is Sofia Wayne-Kent.” Clark and Bruce perked up at this, exchanging a glance. Jason finally decided to get up, walking over to get a better look.

“God, the poor kid looks just like Tim,” he joked dryly. Despite that, he reached out to gently touch her small cheek. She let out a soft coo, making all the boys inhale slightly. They all seemed content to look at her, taking in how small she was.

“How old is she now?” Jason asked, unable to hide his genuine interest.

“About a month,” Tim replied. Jason hummed in response.

“She’s healthy?” Dick questioned.

“Yeah, we had Leslie look at her,” Conner admitted. Tim and Conner had had a hell of a time trying to get her to Leslie without Bruce finding out. Damian made a noise, leaning closer to Sofia. He tried to play uninterested, but they could still hear him as he whispered.

“I will be your favorite uncle,” he murmured. Dick gasped dramatically, shaking his head. Jon seemed just as offended, his lips twitching into a playful frown.

“I don’t think so,” Jon replied, putting his hands on his hips. The four of them started to argue quietly before Bruce gently guided them away. Clark moved closer as well. They stood in front of the two boys, looking down at them before looking at the baby. Sofia took this opportunity to open her eyes, gazing towards Bruce.

“She has your eyes,” Bruce said, resting a hand on Tim’s shoulder. Tim nodded weakly, swallowing back a sob that threatened to escape his lips. He hadn’t expected such acceptance from his family. He had prepared for arguing and disappointment, but it never truly came. Bruce was clearly not happy they had so recklessly created a clone baby, but he didn’t scold Tim. He obviously knew Tim and Conner had been through enough, trying to figure out fatherhood.

“Sofia,” Clark said softly. The man hesitated for a moment before looking at Conner. He ruffled his hair, smiling a bit. Conner beamed, giving him a thumbs up.

“I never thought Tim would end up the teen parent,” Bruce said.

“Oh, I’m sure Dick has some secret kids running around somewhere,” Jason joked. Damian snickered, crossing his arms. For his part, Dick looked pretty offended. He let out an indignant huff, staring daggers at the other. Tim couldn’t help but smile a bit, his eyes finding Conner’s.

Throughout the night, everyone took turns holding the baby (after washing their hands, of course). Damian was as gentle with Sofia as he was with his beloved pets, treating her with more care than he ever had with any of the other siblings. Dick cried multiple times, prompting Jason to continuously make fun of him through the evening. Still, even Jason couldn’t help but get a bit sentimental when he got to hold her.

Bruce held her as if she was the most delicate creature to ever exist. Clark held her with equal care, though he was certainly more relaxed. Tim couldn’t help but take pictures, wanting to capture the precious moment. It had been a turbulent month, but he knew things would be fine as long as they had their families.

Tim sat on the couch, leaning against Conner and resting his head on the man’s shoulder. Conner pressed a kiss to his head, smiling softly.

“I love you, Conner,” Tim mumbled quietly.

“I love you too,” Conner replied in a mere whisper.

Once the two families left, Tim and Conner tucked Sofia into her bed. She was safe and sound, her hands clenched into tiny fists as she wiggled in her crib. They carefully swaddled her up, giving her a few kisses before shutting off the light. The pair disappeared into their bedroom, climbing into bed. Conner wrapped his arms around the other and within a few moments, the two had drifted off into a blissful rest.
