Chapter Text
Check Please universe;
Hockey was the center of attention for many players. Across different worlds, they lived and focused on the sport. However, many worlds existed beyond hockey. In one world, Jack, Bitty and their friends live life in a world magic was real and anything was possible.
Still, the friends go through the ups and downs of life. It just happened to have magic involved. They had many to learn and experience.
the master bedroom, a castle;
Alexei and Kent had some alone time. Their brand new pets perched on the bed with them. Katya napped while the cats groomed each other and settled in. This was their little family, small but mighty. They hoped to expand it one day, but this was the perfect start for them.
a room somewhere in limbo;
Holster and Ransom were seated on a couch. They were confused. The room was non descript beyond a single TV, couch, and white walls and floor. It was almost painfully bright.
“What happened? Where are we?” Ransom asked.
The flickered on, revealing Alexei and Kent napping. The camera panned to their pets and the zoomed out into the wider room. It alarmed them as they knew the couple did not have cameras in their home.
“How are we seeing this? Why are we seeing this?!” Holster yelled and then his words popped on the screen. It played back to them like a narration.
“Are we… narrating this?” Ransom said, both if them still horribly confused. Something had to let them know what was going on.
Chapter 2: The Winds of the Compass
Summary:
Rick and Suzanne raise their family on a farm.

Here's Ch 1, Ch 2-3 will be posted next.
Chapter Text
in a land far far away;
Snowy, March, April, and Camellia made up the compass. The quartet were all winds. March was the West wind, and April was the South wind. Snowy was the North wind, while Camellia was the East wind. They all went their different ways, but they moved together to sail ships, guide birds, and cool hot summers.
They were graceful and neutral, but they were awfully beautiful. Their power was subtle but mighty, and they used it with clear intention.
Bittle farm, the countryside;
Rick and Suzanne went about their usual routine with their children: Eric, Jeff, Tony, Kent, May, and June. Jeff and Tony were known by their nicknames, Swoops and Tango. Many kids meant they needed plenty of space. It was lucky that they lived on a medium sized farm with plenty of space for their kids to spread out, have their alone time, and safely make it back home.
"Ma, Dad and I are heading out to get the eggs," Eric said. "We are heading into town if you need anything."
"Oh! Can I go?" June said. "We need some things for the home."
Rick waved her over and they rushed out. They didn't want to spend so long in town.
front porch; Bittle farm;
Rick and Suzanne had some rare free time to themselves. Their kids were with their friends or at their lessons. The animals were tended to all in the morning, leaving them the free few hours. They sat on the stoop of their home, sipping hot tea and rocking in their chairs.
It took many years, blood, sweat, and tears to build up their farm. Now, it was running better than ever. The kids were active in its maintenance, and they were all learning lessons together. It was interesting, but they could not imagine not having a life like this with their children and their life like this.
the marketplace, a local village;
One day, Suzanne went to the market with Eric and Kent in tow. They followed after her, holding their baskets of sweets and other handmade foodstuff. Suzanne was famous for her cooking, and she was easily able to trade for their needs with some simple lemon cakes. Clothes, supplies, small amounts of feed, and more were accessible with an offer of cured goat meats and preserved vegetables.
"Be careful," Suzanne said as they lugged their goods back. They baskets were heavy with everything they needed to keep themselves safe and the farm working. Not a single pie or a vegetable was left.
a cave in the wild;
Elsewhere, a polar bear named Alexei, or Tater, was in deep thought. For years now, he had been stuck in bear shape. And he was getting lonely. He sought out his true love and fought against an arranged marriage. In retaliation, his intended's mother cursed him.
You will never know true love after your disrespect of my child, she sneered. That left him here, wandering around in this silent, lonely existence.
Chapter 3: Strong Winds

Chapter Text
a castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
Somewhere far away in a place east of the sun, west of the moon, a castle stood. Jack, Chowder, Nursey, and Xavier were unlucky prisoners of the witch queen that lived there and her daughter. They had limited movement and were fed. They spent their days, reading the same books they were allowed to have, day in and day out.
There was no sign of the outside world. They hadn't seen it in years. It might as well have been a figment of their imaginations. They kept to themselves, but they plotted a possible way to get out.
a bakery, two years ago;
Jack and Bitty had gone out for a meal. Suzanne saw them off, supplying them with some water and tea before they left. The couple joked as they walked the path, arriving at a small stall that sold mutton and chicken in grain dishes. It was simple, but delicious.
Once they finished their meal, they stopped at a small bakery and had spiced buns. It was the perfect evening with romance and good food. Neither of them knew how they would miss these moments later.
the front yard;
Rick and Swoops went out to cut down trees for some firewood. Sadly, their work kept being complicated by the wind. The wind was being exceptionally strong today. It was difficult to get any work done, so they had to put the horses in the stable and cows in the barn.
"What is going on?" Rick asked. "It is rough out here."
"Maybe a storm is coming?" Swoops suggested before grabbing his hat to not get blown away. Come on, Dad. We need to go inside. We can't get blown away!"
the main house;
Indoors, Kent and Tango were doing their usual chores. It was their turn to retrieve all of the laundry from the line and sorting it out. They sat at the table, checking each item for any bugs that decided to hitch a ride. After it was done, they sorted it out and delivered it to the shared rooms.
a room somewhere in limbo;
Holster and Ransom were in the room narrating the fairytale. Just as they finished up a chapter, Holster's eyes went wide.
"I know this story!" he exclaimed.
"How?" Ransom was curious.
"It's a Norwegian fairytale. A couple of my teammates mentioned it." Holster answered. "Their kids are taught these! Let's continue!"
Chapter 4: The Journey

the pasture;
Rick was astonished when a polar bear came to the cottage. He woke up early to clean up the pasture on his own. It gave him time to think and take in the world around him. However, the world was thrown out the window when the giant bear appeared before him and talked.
"My name is Tater and I need a companion." Tater begun. "Can you help me?"
"You can talk?" Rick asked, his shock cut by the jolt of a speaking animal. Tate just nodded.
"I would like one of your children to accompany me as a search for my return to my human form," he continued. "If you allow me this, I will agree to pay for your family to get better homes and more stable lands for your animals and crops."
Rick flinched. That offer was too good to pass up unfortunately. The land was starting to fail, and no matter what mixtures they prepared, nothing was growing as it should. If they didn't change something soon, they would be out of food and options.
"I will speak with my son. If he says yes, you must uphold your end." Tater nodded and Rick sighed. Time to go wake up Kent.
Kent's bedroom, the cottage;
Rick sat Kent down for a discussion. Rick explained Tater's offer. He watched as many different emotions passed over his son's face. They were hard to read as Kent was usually hard to read.
"It's a simple yes or no question." Rick said. "Whatever you decide, we will enforce." Kent thought about it.
"I'll do it." Kent said. Rick hugged him and kissed his cheeks. He was scared, but he also knew his son was capable. Kent would be safe, and they would be waiting for him to get back from their journey.
the center of the compass;
April, March, Snowy, and Camellia were gossiping. Well the girls were while Snowy listened. They were all standing around, watching all of this play out. Now, the winds were invested in the chaos of the expedition. This young man is just going to pack up and travel with a random talking bear.
"My, humans are far more peculiar than we believed," March stated. The others had no choice but to nod. They were an interesting sort, but they were more interested to watch where this would go.
the front room, the cottage;
Kent said his goodbyes to his family. He hugged them all, accepting small tokens, food, and a safety kit from everyone. Suzanne cried and Rick pulled him in for a tight hug.
"Take good care of yourself and come home," Rick stated. Kent nodded and accepted the kiss on his forehead. It was difficult leaving them behind, but something out there was drawing him to this adventure. He loved the farm, but he wanted more. This could be everything he could ever ask for and more!
the castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
Elsewhere, the witch queen named Whiskey was in deep thought. Time was running out and soon his daughter would have her husband. They just had to wait for the time to pass along, before they would seek him out. Then, he could put this ugly chapter aside.
It would be worth it, right?
Chapter 5: Evening Songs
Summary:
Tater brings Kent to his home in the mountains.
Notes:
Here's Ch 4, Ch 5-9 will be posted next.
Chapter Text
Tater's place, the mountains;
Kent and Tater arrived at Tater's mountain home. His home was really a cavern system with different tunnels connecting the caves to each other. Inside were furniture. There were bathrooms, bedrooms, a library, a sitting room, a kitchen, and many more. From the outside, it did not seem like much, but the inside was truly a surprise.
"This is your home? How did you create this?" Kent asked, looking around the room.
The bear spoke, "It was built by my family. I am the only one to live here still. Please, have a rest. We have to discuss our journey soon enough."
Kent sat in a firm but comfortable couch that helped soothe the aches and pains he felt from the long walk. Soon enough, his eyes fell closed and he napped. His host left him there, not wanting to ask more of him than he already has.
the compass;
Camellia, Snowy, March, and April caught up on the local gossip. The topic was Tater's new companion that followed him home. He did not stop to speak with anyone and simply lead the young man into the mountains.
"My, isn't he quite handsome," Camellia said, hiding her smile behind a cup of tea. March and April chuckled while Snowy bit into a stuffed pastry.
"I wonder what he wants with him. Is he hoping he'll help him break the curse?" Snowy asked. The others shrugged. Alexei was tightlipped normally, but he was especially careful about what he told them before he left his home. Now, he was back with a stranger.
"We should keep an eye out for him. I'm worried," April admitted. All of them couldn't deny they were also worried.
the mountains;
Alexei and Kent spent time together in the home. The day wasn't over yet, but once Kent was up from his nap, he insisted they talk. Alexei, not one to openly chat, decided to instead play card games with him. His guest didn't argue, instead listening to him describing the rules.
He made it his mission to get Alexei to open up more.
Bittle farm;
Rick and Suzanne settled in their new house with Bitty, Tango, Swoop, May, and June. The house was two-stories high, and home to a bigger farm with a fruit orchard and a barn that held horses, a cow, and a chicken coop. The land was plush but not vast that they would hurt themselves maintaining it.
"Rick, this is beautiful. This is ours?" Suzanne asked. The man nodded. Alexei kept his promise, having people come to move their things that very afternoon. Now, the next morning, they were moving in to the home that would hopefully be their own forever.
Kent's bedroom, Tater's mountain home;
Kent settled down in his bedroom. It took him two hours before he fell asleep. Unknown to him, he was joined by Alexei in his human shape. He was dressed in his sleep clothing, his face clean shaven and radiant. He settled by his side with Kent nestling into his arms. They were both asleep by the time the insects started singing their evening songs.
Chapter 6: Unease
Summary:
Kent is plagued by an uncertain feeling.

Chapter Text
the mountains;
A few days later, Tater and Kent settled into a new routine. In the morning, they would share breakfast with Alexei in his bear form. Then, Kent would help him research ways to reverse his curse. The rest of the day would be spent finishing small things around the home or refining their plan. As the day drew to an end, after their dinner, they cuddled with Tater in his human form.
They were in a slow dance, walking around each other but not getting too close. They were so used to being in each other's arms that they didn't even speak about it after it first happened. Instead, they went to bed every night in each other's arms.
the kitchen, the mountains;
Tater and Kent bonded after their lunch. They had a simple deer stew with vegetables. It remided Kent of his mother's spiced dish, a special treat that was served with bread if they were able to get the meat. His smile seemed to fall as he looked down at his bowl.
"What is wrong?" Alexei asked, looking at his companion.
"I miss my family. I knew I would miss them before I left, but I cannot help it," Kent answered. The bear did not know what to do besides brush his nose and furry cheek against his friend's hand. Kent buried his fingers into the soft surface and let Alexei soothe his nerves and heart.
the dining room area, Bittle cottage, a few years ago;
Rick, Suzanne, Kent, Bitty, Tango, Swoops, June, and May bonded. The family enjoyed meat from a large deer. The rest was already salted and prepared for preservation. It was delicious and soaked up all the sauce that Rick made just for it. They didn't often have enough meat to feed the whole family, so this was a welcomed and appreciated treat.
the castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
At the castle of the Witch Queen, Jack, Xavier, Nursey, and Chowder had front row seats to a new prisoner. Scraps was among a group of prisoners that were brought into her dungeon. This was their form of entertainment: watching to see who else would join them deep in the bowels of the castle. They were taken aback by the sheer amount of prisoners.
"What does he have up her sleeve?" Nursey asked, stepping away from the bars.
Kent's bedroom, the mountains;
It was nighttime again when Alexei got in the bed in his human form. He spooned behind Kent. Kent was deeply asleep but he felt something off. Something was plaguing him. Even as Alexei's warmth seeped into his back, he could not shake the feeling something would happen. Sleep did not come easy, nor was it restful.
Chapter 7: Closer
Summary:
Kent and Tater build their life and routine.
Notes:
Here's Ch 6, Ch 7-9 will be posted next.
Chapter Text
the living room area, the mountains;
One day, a month into his time with Alexei, Kent got new pet cats. Dabi, Kit, Bianca, Zane, Boreas, and Rose were all taken in as strays that wandered the streets for food and comfort. Boreas and Rose wee kittens, while Bianca and Zane were half grown, Dabi and Kit were adult cats. Dabi had soot black fur, Bianca and Zane had white fur and blue eyes. Boreas, Kit and Rose stuck out with their orange and brown fur in wonderful waves and patterns.
Kent's smile was bright as he cuddled the cats that kept him company. The cats also liked to lay on Tater when he settled in the floor, taking warmth from his own fur. His companion laughed and he couldn't find it in himself to be upset.
the living room;
Later in the day, Alexei and Kent hung out. The pair made sure the cats ate and settled in to read books. Kent was starting to venture out into the village, using some money to buy different books and forms of entertainment. Their routine had not changed, but they were growing even closer.
the Bittle farm;
Rick, Suzanne, Bitty, Swoops, Tango, June, and May went about their usual routine. The family slowly made their new home their own. There was a change in the children now that they were in a stable, safer house. They had more energy and were visibly happier.
Suzanne even looked brighter. Years of toiling the other farm even as it failed aged Rick, his hair at the temples bleached white by the stress. Now, his face was bright and his hair continued to grow in his natural auburn hue. It was a wonderful change in pace.
"I miss Kent," Rick admitted, when the other children were asleep. Suzanne kissed his cheek. While they would love to have their son home, they knew he was safe by Alexei's side.
the compass;
April, March, Camellia, and Snowy met up. The group ate their meal together and talked. They were still watching Alexei and Kent carefully. Well, Kent was spotted as Alexei was rarely seen in public. They enjoyed themselves, and their gossip, hoping to see more of the companions.
"I wonder how long it will be before there is a wedding," Snowy teased. However, April and March looked at each other with their secretive smile. Camellia snorted, but finished her pastry.
Chapter 8: Coming Close
Summary:
Alexei and Kent grow closer as their search continues.
Notes:
Here's Ch 7, Ch 8-9 will be posted next.
Chapter Text
the dungeon area, the castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
Jack, Chowder, Nursery, Xavier, and Scraps went about their usual routine. They started their morning with breakfast. It was a simple gruel as that was all the guards were ordered to bring. Sometimes, they didn't even bring that. They just needed to survive off of what they could get.
"Once you get used to the prison, not much can hurt you," Jack warned Scraps. It was important he got accustomed to this life and fast. He would not survive otherwise.
the forest;
Alexei and Kent were on their journey. They had their packs on their back, walking through the path that cut through the forest. The weather was compliant, warm but not too much. That meant less stops for rest and they could make good time.
a camping site;
Over the last few months, Alexei and Kent had gotten closer and fallen in love. One vital thing held them back: Tater's curse. While they had made inroads, there were a few pieces missing. Some of the riddles surrounding his curse were hard to decipher.
"A relationship would just distract us," Kent told himself as Alexei slept beside him. He didn't want to ruin what they had as they tried to save him.
Bittle farm;
Rick and Suzanne sat down to dinner with Bitty, Tango, May, June, and Swoops. They had roasted duck with a hearty stuffing and gravy. They filled their plates with the meal and enjoyed it alongside wine.
Since this land was far more hospitable to crops, they were able to grow and sell enough at a reasonable price. Now, they had more than enough money to buy from others instead of trying to survive on their limited animals. The new house was truly a blessing in disguise.
Chapter 9: Request
Summary:
Kent asks Alexei a favor of his own.

Here's Ch 8, Ch 9 will be posted next.
Chapter Text
the castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
Whiskey and Chad went about their usual routine at the castle. They were up early to clean and prepare. They kept out of the way of the guards or other castle servers. They did not like to socialize, preferring to just stick together instead.
"If we get done quicker, we can go back and have more time for tea," Whiskey suggested.
the forest;
Alexei and Kent talked on their latest journey to find the ingredients. Kent was homesick and wanted to visit his family for the day. So, he made a request.
"I would like to visit my family," Kent said. "It has been months, and I miss them terribly."
Tater hesitated, his paw stopping on the path. His furry face was wrinkled and worried. "Why would you do that? Are you going back with them?"
"What? Alexei, no. I just want to visit. I have never lived so long without seeing at least one of them," the young man stated. He placed his hand in the fur on the polar bear's back. It was extra soft with the winter a mere four months from its first bite. Alexei looked at him, his eyes soft.
I can never say no to him again, Tater thought. Tater relented, so he and Kent made a deal.
"You can go home for a small visit. However, you must return to the hut before the four mornings," Alexei stated. "You agreed to help me fix myself. I need you by my side."
Kent smiled and pressed his face into the fur on the bear's neck. He breathed in the earthy smell and laughed happily. He would see his family soon enough.
the Bittle farm;
Rick, Suzanne, and their children went about their usual routine. The morning brought some early work. Their harvest was almost over, but there was plenty of preparation to do to the land. The soil needed to be rotated before this year's crops could be planted. They changed out this year's crops and would need to nourish them with the waste from meat and vegetables.
"Ready?" Rick said. The children nodded and they all got to work.
the compass;
March, April, Snowy, and Camellia went about their usual routine. The group had their tea and cookies. They noticed Kent leaving the cottage, getting into a carriage, and waving to a waiting Alexei. The bear looked horribly sad and their hearts caught in their chests.
"Are they no longer together?" April asked.
Snowy shook her head, "I don't believe they ever were. Where could he be going?"
March hummed and thought about it, "Could he be seeing family or going on a journey for Alexei?"
"We could ask," Camellia said, but none of them listened to her. They were too busy making up their own ideas of the truth.
Chapter 10: The Return
Summary:
Kent visits his family at their farm.
Notes:
Here's Ch 9, Ch 10 will have to wait a bit. I'm switching to DiD next.
Chapter Text
the front yard, the Bittle farm;
Kent visited his family at their new farm. He spotted his mother on the porch, serving lemonade to his father and the older children. They must have been out in the fields this time of year, and he just missed the harvest.
"Kent? My boy!" Suzanne yelled, pushing past the others to run after him. He rushed into her arms and held her tight. Her face was softer with her wrinkles less pronounced than they were before. She didn't even have the sunburn that she would get from long hours tending to a field that would grow nothing.
The young man smiled. He handed a note to his escort who nodded and rode back down the road.
"He will be back in three days," Kent told her. "For now, may I have some jam and toast?"
the front room, the farm;
Rick, Suzanne, and the family sat down to catch up. Kent sat in one of the armchairs, his feet pulled under him as he finished his toast and tea. His siblings peppered him with questions, but he made sure to keep a tight lip on certain details of their expeditions.
"Is Alexei treating you right?" Rick asked. Kent smiled softly at the mention of his dear friend.
"He is an excellent host. He makes wonderful sweets and takes me into town to meet others," Kent reassured. Rick beamed while Suzanne eyed her son a bit more. While she did not deny that this Alexei fellow was quite nice, she wanted to speak with her son without interference.
the front room;
After the break was over and Kent's siblings were busy with chores, Kent and Suzanne had a talk. They talked about the expedition. Then Kent let slip about him cuddling with bear shaped Tater causing Suzanne worry.
"What on Earth would make you do that?" Suzanne asked. Kent shook his head and reassured her.
"No, Mama, he was human," Kent said. "At night, his body would allow him to shift. When the morning comes, he leaves and shifts in his own room."
Suzanne took a deep breath and let it out. "You could have started with that. My heart was beating out of my chest." Kent kissed her cheek and chuckled to himself.
"Wait, you cuddled with his human form?"
"Okay, I think I hear Papa calling for my help," the young man said, rushing away. His mother's laughter followed him through the front door.
the castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
Jack, Nursey, Chowder, Xavier, and Scraps went about their usual routine. They were up early to do their share of the work. Strangely enough, the Queen was not in to bother them about anything. Seems she was more focused on other things than the prisoners she had.
"I wonder what she has planned," Scraps asked. Jack shook his head.
"The less we know, the better things will be," he stated with finality, making Scraps go back to their work.
Chapter 11: The Truth
Summary:
Alexei and Kent confront their feelings.

Here's Ch 10, Ch 11-13 will be posted next.
Chapter Text
the mountains;
Tater, Kent, and the cats returned home. They made it back to the home after their journey. Kent was smiling ear-to-ear, his joy from seeing his family filling the house. The polar bear was no longer so gloomy, a definite result of his companion's presence in the home again.
"We will need to meet after you settle back in," Alexei stated. The young man nodded and fed their cats. He could use some time to decompress. They were once again working against the clock.
the sitting room, Tater's mountain home;
After their midday tea, Alexei and Kent had a meeting. They sat down and hashed everything. Kent finally found out the full extent of the curse.
"You have to get married," Kent said, his voice steady but his eyes low. Alexei wanted to place his paw over the human's hand, but he thought better of it. He wasn't an idiot. The feelings were there, but a bear cursed to remain so without marrying another was not exactly romantic. However, he knew he could not force love for something like him.
the castle, several years ago;
Alexei refused to marry his step sister. He wasn't interested in incest, even if it was through their parents' marriage. Plus he didn't love her and he didn't appreciate the attempted blackmail.
Whiskey, not used to defiance, became furious and cast a curse, transforming his stepson in a polar bear. The young man was given a task, find his true love or get someone to fall in love with him. True love would break the spell. He had a certain deadline.
"If you fail, you belong to my daughter," the man threatened. Then started the long journey to seeking out answers and freedom.
the sitting room, Tater's home;
Alexei talked with Kent. This was the last time they would be together. The time had come for their companionship to end. They were no closer to the answers than they were halfway through the journey, and Alexei was losing faith.
"You have to keep searching," Kent insisted. "I won't give up on you!"
"Find me at a castle. East of the sun, west of the moon." Alexei said. kent looked like he was going to cry, but he listened. He would follow Alexei to the ends of the earth.
If only he knew.
the compass;
April, March, Camellia, and Snowy met up to talk. Well gossip. There was plenty of that, and they were known for it. Just like that, they kept their appointments.
"They look miserable yesterday. What is happening in that cottage?" April asked. The group gasped. Alexei and Kent were their favorite couple. However, they were nowhere near a couple. While they did not know the details of Alexei's condition, they were sure Kent would cure it.
"It's a shame. I though they would be forever. I heard Kent is preparing to go home soon," Snowy said
"No!" they all yelled before quieting themselves. No, that cannot happen. They could not be done already.

Tater's mountain home;
Kent woke up alone with the cats around him. He sighed and got right up. There was no time to waste on sleeping in. He fed them and then himself before packing his bag. His journey began now.
"It is too quiet," Kent lamented, looking at the cats as they ate. April would be there soon to care for them however long this took. He was certain he would come back, no matter how overconfident he seemed. There was no room for failure.
the sitting room, the mountains;
A knock disturbed the heavy silences over the house. The cats perked up as their owner let in a beautiful, bubbly woman. Her smile was contagious, but her eyes looked over every inch of their home.
"Do not worry," she reassured him. "I will take good care of them. You go get your man."
"He's not -"
"Kent, do not insult my intelligence," April scolded before smiling. She placed a cloth bag into his hand. "Bread with fish fritters for your meal. Keep it with your water pack and it will be safe to eat after you rest."
With that, he was on his way to "get his man."
George's cottage;
Kent met a witch named George. However, he did not know that she was a witch. In his eyes, she was a woman struggling to complete her chores. Like the good gentleman he was raised to be, he helped her get everything into the house and cleaned up.
"Do you need anything else, madam?" he asked before lifting his pack. The witch smiled and showed her true form.
"You, my dear, are the first to aid me in my distress. For that, I give bring gifts." She thanked him with gifts; golden apple, golden pear, and a golden comb.
"You will know what to do with them when you need them," she smiled at his confusion. "Take care on your journey. The sun is not long before it sets."
a room, a castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
However, while Kent traveled, Tater was in a coma. The witch-queen didn't want him awake to flee. Before he could finish his journey and wait for his companion, Whiskey kept him in an enchanted sleep. His snarl was hideous.
"You almost ruined this!" he yelled at the motionless body. He settled with a deep breath.
"No worries. We will fix that and your little friend too."
the prison yard;
Jack, Xavier, Chowder, Nursey, and Scraps went about their usual routine. No one was once again back down to bother them. In fact, they had full bowls of gruel with some meat and bread. It was unusual to receive even a piece of meat that wasn't just fat.
"Something is going on," Chowder mused. "What does that Queen have planned?"

the road;
Kent met Camellia and asked her if she had ever been to the castle. He was going off of a map that seemed more outdated than anything. Camellia was on a journey to a friend's house when he caught up to her.
"No, I haven't ever visited there. Maybe my sister March has been. I can take you to her." Camellia offered. "She is in our mother's favorite cottage."
"That will be great! April still has the cats, correct?" Kent requested.
"Yes, but we have to leave to attend to a sick family member. Is there someone we can take the cats to be with?" she asked. Kent smiled.
"I can send you the location of my family. Eric can take them."
across the water;
After the cats were dropped off, Camellia took Kent south to where March was. They traveled over the water, and the merfolk poked their heads out of the water to look at Camellia's new passenger, Kent. They whispered about his beauty as the sun warmed his skin.
"Do not be alarmed by them. They are just curious," Camellia reassured. Kent smiled at her.
"Thank you for helping me," Kent said. The woman beamed at him, patting his hand.
"I just love a good love story. And do not deny it," she laughed. Kent's cheeks heated up as the red filled his face. He was so transparent.
March's cottage;
A few hours later, Kent was dropped off with March with introductions. Then Camellia bid them farewell before taking her leave. She left him with enough food to take along for the journey. March led him to his room for the evening.
Kent's bedroom, March's cottage, in the south;
Holster and Ransom took their break and turned to Kent. The pair appeared before him, startling the man. He couldn't even speak before they interrupted him.
"Here's the star of the story, Kent Cyboane!" they announced.
Kent spoke, "I think I am going insane."

Chapter Text
the castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
At a certain castle, east of the sun, west of the moon, Jack, Xavier, Nursey, Scraps, and Chowder went about their usual routine. They were up once again to work, but this time, they were not chained. The guards did not elaborate.
"Move it!" one yelled, before they all departed. That left the prisoners to clean without being interrupted or tied down. This amount of freedom was unexpected. What were they hoping to gain from this?
"Something is going to happen," Nursey said. "This can't be a silly mistake."
the kitchen, Bittle farm;
Eric was taking care of Kit, Dabi, Bianca, Zane, Boreas, and Rose. He was in the middle of cleaning their food bowls when his other siblings found him. They were shocked to see so many cats in one place.
“Where did you get them from?” Tango asked.
“They’re Kent’s. His friend dropped them off.” Bitty answered. "I am responsible for them, but in the meantime, they just had lunch."
One of the younger kids was approached by Dabi. He glared at the kid but he accepted the soft scratches and coos. Eric's eyebrow raised. Even though he was known to be the most strict with his space of all the animals, he was so nice to the kids. Well, that was quite the twist.
the docks;
George met up with Camellia. The witch could not get past the nice gentleman that helped her. She did more research and found they had a mutual connection with the woman. In the amount of time it took him to get to the ship, they were able to make a deal.
"I did my end of the bargain. The rest is on him," Camellia stated. The witch hummed and brought up an image of the young man sleeping using her magic. He looked peaceful and far more well rested than he was when she encountered him.
"I hope he gets there in time to put an end to this."
Chapter 15: Help Along the Way

Chapter Text
March's cottage;
After Camellia took her leave, Kent explained his mission to March. He had to explain what he was doing before he set out. There was no guarantee he would come back, and someone had to tell his family if he was lost forever.
"Have you ever been to a castle, east of the sun, west of the moon?" he asked. "Alexei told me find it."
"No, I haven't, but maybe my sister April has. I can take you to her, if you'd like." March responded.
"Really?" Kent said. "Oh, thank you so much!" March smiled and stood. She packed away from food and water, blankets, and small necessities. They would have to travel to April as she was on her own trip.
March had the carriage packed and ready to take off. Kent settled in, hoping this was not another dead end.
across the kingdom;
The birds watched as March took Kent on a journey, traveling west. They took turns guiding the horses with some breaks to feed and rest them. The pair stopped at an inn and took a rest. Once the morning arrived, they were three hours away from where March stayed.
"There she is," March said before bringing the horse to a stop. "Sister, it's your turn to aid our friend."
"Welcome, Kent. I will help you move forward."
the west side of the kingdom;
As March left, Kent look at April, and vice versa. Finally, Kent sighed and explained his request. April thought carefully before replying.
"I have no idea what you're talking about. But our brother Snowy might. He is the strongest of us," she said. "He is not far from here. I could even walk to him."
"Please!" Kent said before calming down. "I need to help Alexei."
"Then follow me," she beamed.
north;
April dropped Kent off with Snowy. Kent explained his tale one more time, having to recite the speech. To his relief, Snowy replied and gave him a proper answer.
"Yes, I remember that castle. I can take you there, if you want." he replied.
"Great!" Kent beamed. Snowy made sure they had food, clothing, and other needs for the journey. He was going to take Kent all of the way, and hopefully, Kent would end this curse once and for all.
Chapter 16: Preparations
Summary:
Whiskey prepares for his plan to come to fruition.
Notes:
Here's Ch 15, Ch 16 will have to wait a bit. I'm switching to CC next.
Chapter Text
the castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
Whiskey and Chad were preparing for the wedding. The witch dreamed of this since Alexei was born. His estate with Whiskey's influence would make him the most powerful person in the realm. That would open so many more doors and help him truly take power.
"My daughter will make a beautiful bride," Whiskey smirked. It was only a matter of time. Either that bear married or he died.
outside the castle;
Chad stepped out for some fresh air when he met Kent. He eyed Kent's golden comb. Kent saw what Chad was looking at, and he got an idea. This was his one chance to get into the castle and see Alexei.
'"I will give you the comb, if you let me have a night with Tater," Kent said.
"Deal." Chad replied as he took the comb. His eyes were blinded by greed, so he did not see Kent's joy. He ignored all of the warnings that Whiskey gave him. Kent just needed to be with his love again.
the castle;
Xavier, Jack, Scraps, Nursery, and Chowder went about their routine. They were let out of the dungeon to clean the castle. It was important that they get it spotless or they were at risk of losing their extra rations. It gave them an opportunity to watch other people and listen in.
"No one suspects us, so they just say anything," Scraps observed. "They just ignore our presence."
"Don't knock it. Information is the strongest currency," Chowder stated. They had some time before they were back in the cell. They had to make use of it.
Alexei's bedroom;
Kent was let in Alexei's room. Sadly, Alexei was in a drugged sleep and didn't respond when Kent tried to awaken him. Kent sighed and crawled to lay beside him. He could hear his breathing and feel the rise and fall of his chest. At least he was alive.
"I just need to be by your side," he whispered, holding onto Alexei.
the compass;
Snowy arrived and collapsed into a heap. March, April, and Camellia were singing when Snowy arrived. They went over to their brother and pulled him up to the carriage.
"Did he make it inside?" Camellia asked.
Snowy nodded, "We barely made it. I can't get inside now, so he is on his own."
The women bundled their brother into the carriage. They needed to find somewhere to lay their head. They could not go too far or risk Kent being totally alone without outside support.
Chapter 17: Warning
Summary:
Kent continues to try to awaken Alexei.
Notes:
Here's Ch 16, Ch 17-the epi will be posted next.
Chapter Text
outside the castle;
Chad met with Kent. They made a deal, as they had before, and Kent got his night with Tater while Chad got the golden apple. Chad believed nothing would come of those nights. They were not getting away with breaking the spell, and he got something incredibly valuable for his troubles.
"How naive," Chad chuckled as he cradled the golden apple.
the Bittle farm;
Bitty and the cats went about their new routine. They grew close to him, sticking by his side in the lively home. He made sure to feed them on time, brush their fur, and give them as much play time as he could. Even Dabi was warm with him.
"I am going to be so sad when Kent comes back," Bitty pouted. "I love you all so much."
The cats purred and accepted all of the pets and scratches.
Alexei's bedroom, the castle, east of the sun, west of the moon;
Alexei was in his drugged sleep when Kent was let in. Once inside the room, he tried to awaken Alexei with no success. Kent cried as he tried to awaken his love. holding him close in his arms. He struggled to hold on and stop crying, but his heart was breaking.
"Please. I love you, Alexei. Please, you cannot leave me here. I need you to come back," he sobbed, clutching him close and rocking back and forth.
the dungeons;
Unknown to Kent, the prisoners, Jack, Scraps, Xavier, Chowder, and Nursey, heard him trying to wake Tater up. They became curious, and Jack's ears perked up. He tried to hear what he was saying.
"That voice sounds familiar." Jack noted. However, it couldn't be him. He was far away somewhere, and would have no reason to be anywhere near this awful castle.
the courtyard;
The next day, Tater was let out for a bit. During his free roam, he encountered Jack in the yard. Jack approached him, careful not to look too suspicious. The guards may be lazy, but they were not idiots.
"Kent was here," Jack said. "I think he was. I heard him."
Alexei froze, "How do you know him? Who are you?"
"I am Jack, and long before I was a prisoner here, I was a friend of Kent's," the man explained. "I am telling you because I think I heard him weeping and begging you to wake up. You need to get back to him before it is too late."
Alexei froze as the news settled over him. Kent was here, and he was not giving up on him. With the fire renewed in him, he was determined not to let the witch win.
Chapter 18: Trickery
Summary:
Kent puts his plan into action once again.
Notes:
Here's Ch 17, Ch 18-the epi will be posted next.
Chapter Text
outside the castle;
Chad met with Kent again. As it was routine, they met under the cover of dark, when Alexei was once again asleep and restrained. They made another deal: another golden apple for another night with his love.
Chad smirked, "You must really care for him to give up something so valuable."
"He is the most valuable thing I have," Kent admitted, handing over the apple. Chad unlocked the room and gave the same speech to be gone before the sun rose. With that, he walked away with the golden apple and a greedy smile on his face.
Tater's bedroom, the castle;
Kent was let in, and he went to wake Tater up. He followed the routine, making him comfortable and cradling him to his chest. However, this time, Tater woke up and they reunited.
"I knew you would wake up!" Kent gasped, but Alexei pressed a finger to his lips. He looked around, not seeing anyone stationed outside his bedroom. He must have been under a strong spell if they weren't even going to keep him under watch. His eyes looked towards Kent.
"We cannot stay here. As much as I would love to hold you all night, we need to get out of here," he stated. Kent nodded and listened carefully as the man explained his plan.
This had to be perfect. There was no room for error or neither of them would make it out of this castle.
the parlor;
The next morning, Alexei put his plan in action. It was simple trickery. Chad just had to do a task: wash Tater's shirt. Sadly, he failed, and Kent came in. He washed the shirt, only to succeed. Whiskey and Chad were livid. No one was able to clean it, and a mere human doing the task enraged him.
"You ruined me! You ruined my plan!" Whiskey yelled. He grabbed Chad. "You will not get away with this!"
"I already have," Kent smirked, kissing Alexei's cheeks and letting the magic change him. Whiskey yelled and snapped his fingers, and he and Chad escaped in a puff of smoke.
"How anti-climatic," Alexei said. Kent laughed and kissed his lips once again.
"I love you."
"Oh, how I love you," Alexei beamed.
the dungeons;
Jack, Chowder, Nursey, Scraps, and Xavier found out that the witches were gone when Tater and Kent came down to free the prisoners. They were relieved, seeing two people that weren't their captors. However, Jack was stunned to see Kent.
"Kent! It was you!" he exclaimed, flinging himself at his friend. Kent laughed out loud, rocking his friend back and forth.
"Jack! We always wondered what happened to you," Kent replied. "Wait until Bitty sees you!"
"B-Bitty? Is he here? I'm not dressed for him!" the man rambled, but Kent settled him with another loud laugh.
"No, but if you stick with us, you'll see him soon enough."
Chapter 19: Coming Home
Summary:
All of the former prisoners are returned home.
Notes:
Here's Ch 18, the epi will be posted next.
Chapter Text
the kingdom;
Alexei, Kent, and the former prisoners made their way home. The winds came by and transported them. They floated on the winds, watching the wretched castle grow smaller behind them. The couple held onto each other tight while the others were just looking at a world they hadn't seen in years.
"This is what freedom feels like," Jack sighed, breathing in the fresh air. Once the winds landed, they greeted them all.
"You're home, Alexei. Glad to have you back," Snowy smiled. Alexei held Kent close and beamed.
"It is good to be home. However, my home is where Kent and his family are. Is it too much to be taken there?" Alexei asked. March clapped.
"Not at all. Let's get you where you belong."
the Bittle farm;
Alexei and Kent were brought to Rick and Suzanne's home. The family was inside eating their breakfast when they landed. The winds took off, leaving the couple and Jack behind.
"We heard about you and Kent's brother," April teased. "Seems you may be staying here as well."
The trio walked onto the porch and knocked. The door slowly opened, revealing one of Kent's youngest siblings. Her gasp alerted the rest of the family who rushed in to see Kent, Alexei, and Jack waiting for them.
"Kent! My boy!" Rick yelled, rushing to bring his son into his arms. Kent cried into his father's shirt, breathing in his scent. The smell of wood and fireplace smoke filled him with comfort.
"Everyone, meet Alexei. Again," Kent smiled. Alexei, a bit red in the face with nerves, was swarmed by his future in-laws. All of them wondered what happened to his fur.
the front room;
While Kent was introducing his human shaped fiance to his parents, Jack and Bitty reunited. Bitty gasped when Jack appeared in front of him. He didn't speak, running right into his arms and holding tight.
"I never thought -. We thought you were gone," Bitty gasped and Jack kissed his hands and face.
"Come fire or storm. Nothing could make me stay away," Jack said. Bitty blushed and held him even closer. They were going to be okay.
the compass;
Snowy, March, April, and Camellia met back up after seeing everyone home. They smiled in relief that everything had worked out. Their friends were back home, the witch was gone, and they got to have enough gossip to for a year's worth of tea.
"Job well done," Camellia smiled. With that, the siblings settled in their home, and enjoyed their finger sandwiches.
Kent's bedroom, the Bittle farm;
Alexei and Kent had some alone time. The couple settled in Kent's room. His father took until dinner to warm up to the idea of him staying in the room with his fiance while unwed. However, his mother insisted they be left alone.
"They've survived a witch, Rick. Let them have this."
The couple did nothing else but cuddle and sleep. After the journey, mentally and physically, they needed this moment to recover and care for themselves.
Chapter 20: Epilogue
Summary:
Alexei and Kent are finally married.

Here's the epi and the final chapter for this fic. However, there's more patater fics. But further updates will have to wait, I'm switching to CC next.
Chapter Text
a local church;
A few months later, Camellia, April, March, and Snowy met up to watch a wedding. They wanted front row seats to see the next beautiful chapter of the love story they helped facilitate. Of course, they were given great seats as they helped get Kent to the castle to be with his love.
"How do I look?" Snowy said, his suit crisp and embroidered with the couples' flowers of choice.
"Stunning. We all are," April smiled. "However, our lovely grooms will outshine us all."
As they talked, the wedding music started to play, they stood up and watched as the couple was guided in, one-by-one. They were in love and happy, and that was all that mattered to them.
a church;
Alexei and Kent were married. The couple were met at the end of the aisle by a priest. Before their friends, family, and complete strangers that helped them anyway, they were wedded and loved. The joy in their eyes was visible and their love shined through everything. Nothing mattered but themselves.
the wedding reception;
The guests consisted of Kent's family and Alexei's friends. The food consisted of beef with pasta and salad. The wedding cake had three layers; the bottom was chocolate, the top was strawberries and cream, the middle was vanilla. The frosting was buttercream with sugar polar bears.
"Really?" Bitty chuckled. Alexei shrugged.
"I was a beautiful polar bear," he reasoned, and his brother-in-law rolled his eyes.
The reception was merry. People laughed and smiled as they mingled. Some danced on the dance floor. All of them were having the time of their lives well into the night.
the master bedroom, Alexei and Kent's new place;
Alexei and Kent had some alone time. The couple settled in their marital bed in the home Alexei built for them. It was not far from Kent's family home, but it was at the right distance to have some privacy. They had some leftovers from the wedding before falling into their bed, bone tired but elated.
When Whiskey had cast the curse on Tater, he didn't expect the twists and turns his life took. Kent hadn't been expecting a love story like the one he got. Yet, he couldn't bring himself to regret it.
He had the love of his life and his family. A man couldn't ask for more.
