Hearts Divided To Intertwine

Summary:

What if the last time Duan Zi'Ang and Xiao Shuhe spent together was the first time they created life?

After the recent troubles of wars arising with kingdoms attacking both the Nan Hui and Jibei Kingdom to prevent a successful alliance, these two kingdoms were forced to part ways for a while to ensure safety.

Futile, it may seem.

Years later, sitting on the throne of the Jibei Kingdom as Emperor, Duan Zi'Ang received intel that sparked a clean fire within him. He had not felt that way since the beginning of the wars. Therefore, why the sudden interest?

Someone saw an Omega, looking too similar to the man who was barely his husband, a five year old boy with him; his features too similar to that of his own.

Notes:

Back again with another oneeee. Of course, I had to write an Omegaverse with these two as I always do with my stories.

This one is a little heavier than what I usually write but I hope you all enjoy nonetheless!

Also, note that XSH and DZA do not die. My heart will not allow it.

Introductory chapter! Was a little skeptical about starting how I did before going back in the past but let us try!

Tell me what you think about this chapter.😁

Chapter Text

“Zi'Ang.”

Duan Zi'Ang instantly turned around at the sound of his name. That voice was soft and gentle and one that he never wanted to stop hearing. Duan Zi'Ang had gradually come to love this voice. His gaze softened.

His husband, Xiao Shuhe came into sight and Duan Zi'Ang melted on the spot. Even after eighteen years, his heart still skips beats at this beauty. Upon seeing him, Duan Zi'Ang's smile was bright, even in the dim lighting in his chambers at his lover's soft appearance.

Xiao Shuhe was dressed in the colours of gold with accents of red, different to his own black and gold. Although his colour scheme was different from Duan Zi'Ang, it was still easy to see that he was a sovereign of the Jibei Kingdom. The colour scheme may be a bit different but the emblem and accents remained, securing his status by the Emperor's side.

“Shuhe,” Zi'Ang softly responded, tone smooth. He raised his arms out in front of him as his husband stepped closer. Shuhe could not hide his smile at that action.

Even in his sitting position, Zi'Ang hugged his lover once he was close enough. He rested his head gently on the large bump that was hidden under Shuhe's robes. Shuhe rubbed his husband's head, mindful of the guan, holding his hair together. His fingers even grazed the mark that he placed on his husband's neck all of those years ago. Shuhe loved the shiver that coursed through Zi'Ang.

“Baby is growing more by day,” whispered Zi'Ang as his eyes closed in comfort. He sighed softly, taking in the scent of Shuhe that was vanilla mixed with something else milky. It was expected with his pregnancy. “How are you feeling?” Zi'Ang then continued, rubbing his face on his husband's stomach, enjoying the smell.

“I'm fine, Ang Ang but it is not me you have to worry about,” Shuhe spoke and Zi'Ang could hear the tinge of worry in that tone. The mood instantly turned from a positive to a negative one.

The Emperor held up from his spot, eyes gazing into Shuhe's own, confused. “Is something wrong? A’ Hua? Yao-Er? Where are they?”

Shuhe sighed, leaning down slightly to cup his husband's cheeks in his warm hands. He guessed he was a bit at fault for Zi'Ang's worries. He did his best to calm him down.

Lightly scenting the alpha, Shuhe's vanilla scent surrounded Zi'Ang, making him feel more at ease. Zi'Ang scented his husband back, his cocoa scent surrounding them like a cocoon. Their scents complimented each other's greatly.

It also appeared as if the baby inside of Shuhe's stomach reacted to the relaxed feeling of his Omega father.

“Shuhua is already asleep,” Shuhe smiled softly as he spoke about his nine-year old. The little Omega was as quiet as her Omega father, loving to learn about poems and playing the zither.

“But Zi'Yao,” Shuhe continued, his brows furrowed. Zi'Ang could see it was impossible for his husband to hide his worry. “He's left the palace Zi'Ang. I hadn't alerted anyone of this since I believe he may want to be alone for a while and I didn't want anyone to worry." Shuhe winced and with a deep breath, he said, “That was two hours ago.” Ah, leave it to him to worry alone.

Zi'Ang stood up swiftly, a concermed look showing on his features once more. “Two hours? Shuhe, the Crown Prince disappearing for two hours is something to be worried about.”

Based on his movements, Shuhe knew his husband would send a search party looking for their sixteen-year old son. He calmly tugged on the Emperor's robe sleeve in an attempt to break him from those thoughts.

He did not have to say anything right away. Shuhe only shook his head. Zi'Ang searched the emotions on his Omega's face, a soft sigh eventually leaving him.

“I will go alone,” he murmured, stepping forward to softly kiss the lips of his Omega. Zi'Ang had a hand resting on Shuhe's baby bump, a sense of comfort surrounding him.

“Don't scold him, Zi'Ang. Just find out what is bothering him.”

Zi'Ang laughed lightly as he grabbed his cloak. Even as Shuhe drew the strings closer to cover part of Zi'Ang's face, the Emperor was still laughing.

“What is so funny?”

Zi'Ang shrugged. “You're making it seem like I'm a monster.”

Shuhe smirked, fixing the cloak. “You can be when you want to be.”

Zi'Ang could not argue with those words. Instead, he only said, “I will be back soon my love and with what is ours.”

Shuhe smiled, placing a hand on his stomach. He could feel the baby kicking but did not tell Zi'Ang since he knew his husband would stay back a little longer. He needed his oldest back soon.

“Hurry back. I don't need the kingdom in an uproar over the disappearance of the Emperor and the Crown Prince. They might kill me if I can't produce answers," Shuhe lightly joked.

Zi'Ang's expression darkened and with furrowed brows, he said, "Don't joke about that. I'd kill everyone here."

Shuhe lightly smacked his husband's arm, a small laugh leaving him. "But really, Ang Ang. Hurry back. They really will be worried if they can't locate you both."

Zi'Ang chuckled but understood where his husband was coming from. Without any more delay, he left the chambers through the window, being mindful of the palace guards down below. He barely looked up for a split second, seeing Shuhe gazing down at him. The Omega blew a kiss to his Alpha, chuckling to himself when Zi'Ang pretended to catch it. His husband then disappeared into the dark of the night.

The Emperor was stealthy, as one should be. He was quick on his feet and quiet, cloak drawn close to him so he could blend into the darkness.

He eventually made it past the walls, able to go over them. Zi'Ang had to lighten his breathing when he alerted one of his guards. Of course, they wouldn't attack him but he couldn't allow anyone to know he was leaving the kingdom.

When he landed on the ground, he ran into the forest. The city was nearby but something told him his son would not go far -assuming he wasn't captured or something.- If his son was in the city, word would've reached him by now.

Coming onto a clearing, Duan Zi'Ang saw a dark-hooded figure by the stream. He couldn't see the person's face but the simple sleeve of the robe the person was wearing was enough for him to know this individual was his son. His scent was clear as parents are easily able to detect them in a crowd.

Zi'Ang stayed behind the tree for a while longer, watching as his son flicked at the flowing water. He was in a stooping position, head resting on his knee.

The Emperor couldn't help but shake his head with a smile, finally making an appearance.

When Zi'Ang showed himself, Duan Zi'Yao stood up almost instantly. He drew his sword and Zi'Ang saw his husband and also himself in those features, especially now that he was angry. He was a perfect mix of the two of them.

His scent clouded the area, even in an open space. At sixteen years old, Zi'Yao’s scent was strong, exuding nothing but the traits of an Alpha. Zi'Ang had to clear his throat otherwise he wouldn't be able to control himself for praising his son for such strength.

Besides, now was not the time.

Zi'Ang didn't have to lower the hood of his cloak right away. Zi'Yao’s features softened when he picked up on the scent of his Alpha father, immediately sheathing his sword. The young Alpha, there and then, lowered his body to that of a bow, hands clasped in front of him as he bowed to the Emperor of the Jibei Kingdom.

“Father,” Zi'Yao spoke, eyes casted down. Zi'Ang hummed in approval, removing the hood from his head.

“Care to explain why you left the palace?” He asked his son who still had his head bowed. Even with his face lowered, Zi'Ang could see how Zi'Yao pinned his lips, his expression souring. The Emperor sighed when the words of his husband came to mind, reminding him not to scold their son.

Damn. Maybe his Omega was right. Was he really a monster at some points?

Before Zi'Yao could respond, Zi'Ang pulled him to sit down on nearby stones.

“Let me rephrase,” Zi'Ang continued once they had gotten themselves comfortable. “What made you so worried that you did not think to talk to me or your father? He is worried, you know.”

Zi'Yao’s head snapped toward his father, brows furrowed in concern. “Is he okay?” He knew of his father's condition -everyone did- but he didn't want to be responsible for his worry to make him sick.

“Shuhe is fine but he will be better once he sees that you are alright,” at those words, Zi'Yao stood up, ready to make his way back home. However, Zi'Ang grabbed his son's hand.

“Sit, we are not finished here,” Zi'Yao paused but he wasn't going to disregard his father's words. He obeyed.

“There is a reason you left, Yao-Er. So, what is it?”

Zi'Yao bit his lip, avoiding his father's gaze. He rubbed at his arms, even clothed in the long sleeved robes. How was he going to bring this up?

Zi'Ang did not rush him. He remained quiet until his son was ready to speak. He would when it was time but it had to be now. He couldn't have any of their children thinking it was fine to run off and deal with their worries alone.

When Zi'Yao’s lips began to tremble, Zi'Ang didn't say anything. Instead, the Emperor, no father, pulled his son close, allowing him to rest his head on him. Zi'Ang sighed as he painfully listened to the soft sounds that his son made.

He allowed those tears to wet his clothes and his son to be vulnerable. He knew the world they lived in could be a harsh one with all of the expectations and deadlines. After building this kingdom brick by brick again, Zi'Ang promised himself to make life easier for himself and his family.

“Sorry, father,” Zi'Yao whispered as he held up. Zi'Ang shook his head, a bittersweet smile on his face as he looked at his son.

“There is nothing to be sorry for. Even the strongest shed tears, Yao-Er.”

Zi'Yao smiled softly, head lowered as he twiddled with his fingers. It was quiet for a while but when the young Alpha took that deep breath, Zi'Ang remained as quiet as he could be.

“I think I like someone,” he said those words so softly that Zi'Ang almost missed it. The older Alpha was barely able to hide his smile, having to fold his lips so as to not scare his son away.

There was so much he wanted to say but one step at a time, Zi'Ang. Let your son speak.

Zi'Yao's smile faded as he thought about those words. “But,” Zi'Yao sighed and did not continue.

Zi'Ang raised an eyebrow. “But?” He pressed.

“But… this person is not royalty."

Zi'Ang let out a puff of air. He wasn't sure what he was expecting but it wasn't this. He was quiet for some time, even as Zi'Yao risked a look in his direction to see his father's expression.

Zi'Ang cheered himself up which in turn did the same to his son. “Is that it, Yao-Er? Is that what made you so upset?”

Zi'Yao looked at Zi'Ang in confusion. “Father, I just told you I am interested in someone that is not royalty. Isn't that like a bad omen or something?”

Zi'Ang blew out a puff of air, waving off his hand. “You have nothing to be worried about, Zi'Yao.”

Zi'Yao still did not look convinced and this showed clearly on his features. “What about the royal court? Surely, a Crown Prince will not be able to be seen with someone they consider of lower status.”

Zi'Yao told no lies there. A Crown Prince was supposed to be married to an Omega of royalty or someone of a high status. It wouldn't be allowed either way.

Zi'Ang cleared his throat, huffing as he looked at his son. “Am I not the Emperor? Whoever you want to marry it is up to me to allow or disallow it.”

Zi'Yao laughed softly, his mood instantly brightening. He liked moments like this when he could speak to his father without consequences or having to worry about others thinking as if he was disrespecting him. Although an Emperor, Duan Zi'Ang was his father first.

“Who is this person though? Do I know them?” Zi'Ang then asked. Zi'Yao hummed but shook his head.

“Not so fast. I want them to be at peace for a little while longer,” Zi'Ang had to tilt his head in confusion.

“What? What are you trying to say? Would I annoy them?

Zi'Yao only stayed quiet, a smug grin on his face as he stood. He pulled the hood of his cloak over his head and Zi'Ang did the same as he walked next to his son.

“Fine, you don't have to say anything,” Zi'Ang pouted and looked nothing like an Emperor at this moment. Zi'Yao guessed he had his Omega father to blame for spoiling this Emperor.

“I want to get back home to my pregnant Omega anyway," he then whispered under his breath.

Zi'Yao continued to laugh as they exited the clearing. They still had a ways to go to get to the palace so they had some time to talk.

“Right, father," Zi'Yao spoke after a moment of silence. "How did you meet Baba anyway? I remember the second meeting when I was five but I mean before that. The very first time you met him.”

Zi'Ang was surprised at the question. Everyone in the kingdom knew Jibei was built a second time but no one really spoke of it. If they did, Zi'Ang did not know. He tried his best to keep the dark past of their lives from their children.

Zi'Yao was sixteen though, Zi'Ang thought. He would eventually have to find out about that particular part of his history of their kingdom.

Their past was already like a ticking time bomb but his and Shuhe's connection practically gave them less time.

Until there was none at all.

Zi'Ang smiled with a lowered head. When he raised it, he looked at the stars that were shining brightly in the sky. He had to be thankful that he could at least tell his son this story. In later years, he would probably tell their younger ones if they asked too.

With a deep breath, Zi'Ang spoke.

“I met your father when I was eighteen.”

Your first peek at the Jibei Kingdom

Chapter Text

Set in the current dynasty, multiple kingdoms ruled. There were those kingdoms of the east and west as well as the south. In the north, the kingdom that ruled was that of the Jibei Kingdom.

An Alpha Emperor by the name of Duan Xiang was the current leader. As any Alpha Emperor should be, he was strong, intelligent and any other positive trait one could think of. He had no Empress by his side as she had passed some years ago. Concubines? There were none. The Jibei Kingdom was probably one of the few kingdoms where the Emperor did not take concubines.

One mate was enough whether alive or dead.

Duan Xiang had three sons and that was enough for the royal council which probably strengthened the reason why he did not have to take any concubines. The late Empress made them proud as she had borne the structure of this nation, providing them strong Alpha sons.

There was Duan Zi'Ang, the second son of the Emperor and an Alpha who showed no fear. His scent was that of cocoa that made most people compliment it. His confidence also made his people feel safe. An Alpha who was confident but not prideful was a blessing.

At this present moment, the second son sat at one of the tables present in the throne room. There was a meeting commencing between the royal council and the royals of the Jibei Kingdom. Duan Zi'Ang was listening to the speech of those belonging to the royal council, observing and breaking down their words of the matter at hand they were discussing.

His brother, the Crown Prince, was standing next to Duan Xiang. Duan Qi'Ang was the first of the kingdom's Alpha sons, strong and independent. His scent was woodsy but was easy on the air; a pleasant one to smell.

Then there was Duan Huaiyi, the youngest Alpha son of the nation. His scent was that of rain on fresh grass. He was calmer than his two older brothers, more refined and keeping a clear mind in matters like these.

“Therefore, we fear attacks from the Eastern Kingdom, Your Majesty.”

Duan Zi'Ang blinked at the words of the war general as his father hummed. The matter at hand they were discussing was the tension among those kingdoms of the east, west and even their own. Ever since Zi'Ang was young, he had always known about the threats from these outside kingdoms. The reasons varied but the people believed or more likely knew that the real reason was that those outside kingdoms feared the increasing numbers of the North and South.

“Any suggestions for increasing strength at the borders and within the kingdom?” Duan Xiang finally spoke. For the entire meeting, Xiang listened to his council speaking without himself uttering a word. The ministers would've urged him to say something but he refused to speak.

When he did, the others in the room paid attention. Even Zi'Ang looked at his father as he spoke his first words for the afternoon.

The ministers looked amongst each other but no ideas came to mind. There were murmurs and only when Emperor Xiang raised his hand, everyone went silent.

The Emperor spoke again.

“Let it be known that the Jibei Kingdom is not weak, though other kingdoms may be stronger,” the words were like a slice through the silence, sharp on others’ ears. Everyone listened clearly, afraid to be cut.

“But, there is no shame in alliances. The Southern Kingdom is also seeking alliance as they have now become targets to these outside kingdoms as well.”

Those words alone raised heads, everyone looking at one another but no one could disagree. The Southern and Northern Kingdoms never had much interactions with each other but there wasn't exactly any tension between them.

At the Emperor's words, his three sons looked at him. Alliance usually meant marriage whether sought or arranged.

“Permission to speak, Father,” the Crown Prince raised his head from next to his father. Duan Xiang nodded in acknowledgement, allowing his son to speak.

“Are you suggesting marriage? If that is what is needed to be done to ensure safety, I do not object.”

Duan Xiang hummed at his oldest son's statement. He guessed he could understand since with alliances, usually the oldest is married off first. He never wanted to force his children to marry because a mate was someone you were to hold dear. A mate was someone that would bear your mark and have children in love. Bonding was something special and he was glad to have that chance.

...but now, sadly, duty had to be first and at the forefront; especially when it came to matters like these. Jibei may be in danger if the kingdom did not gain added strength.

However, the Emperor only shook his head in disagreement. Everyone looked at the Emperor as they waited on him to continue. His eyes were solely on his second son as he said, “The Omega Prince of the Nan Hui Kingdom is closer in age to Zi'Ang.”

Zi'Ang immediately raised his head, shock displaying on his face. He blinked dumbly, in an attempt to process his father's words.

Murmurs arose again among the council and everyone nodded in agreement as quick as the words came. “An arranged marriage to ensure the strength of the kingdom. This is intelligence indeed, my Emperor.”

No one mentioned it since they could not think of a Kingdom to merge with. Jibei did not have interactions with Nan Hui, therefore, that wasn't an obvious thought for others.

Zi'Ang could not say anything at the moment. Even if he did, the turmoil of thoughts running through his head would not be appropriate for him to speak at this very moment. He might be killed on the spot for challenging the Emperor even though he was his father.

Instead, Zi'Ang bit his bottom lip harshly, also trying to hide the disapproval on his features. With a soft sigh, he arose from his seat, hands out in front of him as he bowed slightly.

“This second son hears his father's words.”

As everyone in the room was pleased at the newfound information, Zi'Ang was probably the only person with heavy thoughts. He wasn't exactly looking forward to an arranged marriage so early in his life.

His younger brother next to him pinned his lips tightly, nodding slightly. He did not say anything but Zi'Ang knew this was his attempt to comfort him. Huaiyi was still young, only fourteen so he would not have to worry about such matters as yet.

Probably not at all.

The increase of threats from the Eastern Kingdom forced their hand and the Southern Kingdom was probably being affected as well if they were seeking alliance as his father said. As soon as Duan Xiang made the statement of the arranged marriage, letters were already being prepared to be sent to Nan Hui. It will reach them in approximately seven days.

“Your Majesty, what if the Nan Hui Kingdom rejects this proposal? What will we do?”

Duan Xiang tapped his fingers on the throne, a grin appearing on his face. The Emperor chuckled lightly with a shake of his head.

“Nan Hui will accept this proposal. Although we do not do business with them, Xiao Shuyian is a good friend of mine. Fear not.”

The Emperor then stood from his seat and the people in the room bowed right then. “Send the letter as soon as possible. War does not wait on anyone.”

In unison, everyone said, “Yes, your Majesty.”

When Duan Xiang left the room, Zi'Ang felt as if he had a bitter taste in his mouth. He was, of course, not pleased with the recent events and for any ordinary person, their scents would've gone haywire. For Zi'Ang though, with all the training he had to go through to keep his scent at bay, no one would be able to detect his feelings by scent.

His expression showed everything, however.

He didn't even realise that he was still sitting in the room, even as everyone left. The scent of wood clouded his nose as he blinked out of his thoughts. He looked up to see his older brother in sight.

“Follow me,” Duan Qi'Ang softly said. Zi'Ang swallowed but with a simple nod, he got up to follow his brother.

Qi'Ang walked with his hands clasped behind his back, his brother doing the same. As they walked past servants and others, heads bowed in respect to the Alpha sons. No one approached them.

Qi'Ang led his brother to their gazebo, the area nothing less than beautiful. There were some flowers that he wasn't too sure about but the clearing alone was easy on the eyes. A servant quickly came forward with a tray, two cups and a pot present.

Qi'Ang and Zi'Ang sat, facing each other. Even as the servant placed the tray down and left, Zi'Ang still had that distressed look on his face.

Noticing that his brother may not speak with listening ears around, the two guards that were present, the Crown Prince raised a hand to them. Without any words, the two men took their leave.

The two of them remained silent for a while, only taking small sips of their tea. Qi'Ang glanced at his brother a few times, having to laugh softly when he saw the pout on Zi'Ang's face.

“Zi'Ang, this is good, you know,” Qi'Ang began breaking the silence. Zi'Ang looked up at the Crown Prince before looking down at his now empty cup.

“Easy for you to say,” Zi'Ang spoke and the pouty look remained on his face. Qi'Ang laughed.

“You know, I was actually ready to marry for this alliance. If Father didn't disagree because of the age difference, I'd save the kingdom and as a plus, have a pretty Omega by my side.”

Zi'Ang glanced at Qi'Ang, a blank look on his face. “How do you even know if this Omega is pretty? What if he is ugly?”

Qi'Ang shrugged. “But how do we know that he isn't? Zi'Ang, arranged marriages happen all of the time in our world though we know Father wouldn't have if he had any other choice,” Qi'Ang poured some more tea for them to drink. “Sometimes, we have to do things we do not want to.”

Zi'Ang did not say anything for a minute. He held his cup in his hand, staring at the contents as he thought.

“I just don't want to marry some snobby Omega,” he murmured with a roll of his eyes. Qi'Ang tilted his head in his confusion.

“Wait, are you afraid of the arranged marriage or are you afraid of who you think you might get married to?”

Zi'Ang shrugged his shoulders, placing the full cup back onto the tray. “I just don't want some snob annoying me for the rest of my life."

Qi'Ang stared at his brother with an open mouth. As he processed Zi'Ang's words, he huffed out a laugh.

“Zi'Ang, I told you already about watching all of those plays in the city. Who says this Omega is a snob? You might actually come to love him.”

Zi'Ang still wasn't convinced and Qi'Ang realised this. So, the Crown Prince continued.

“At least meet him for me? We should receive word in a fortnight on Nan Hui's intentions.”

Zi'Ang was still a bit put off by the news but speaking to his brother did help. With a slight smile, the eighteen year old Alpha nodded. His scent that was showcasing his uneasy feelings had now lightened. In the presence of his brother, he had no reason to hide his feelings and that included the emotions in his scent.

“Alright but if he is a snob, you have to marry him,” Duan Qi'Ang filled the air with his loud laughter.

“That is fine with me,” he then trailed off. “Father could've granted me the alliance duty, you know. We are only eight years apart.”

Zi'Ang laughed softly. “You might scare him off, old man.”

Zi'Ang woke up early to train. He usually did but he was extra early this morning. He guessed he had to blame his rampant thoughts for making his body move before the sun even came up.

It was the fifteenth day after his father sent out the letter to the Nan Hui Kingdom, which meant today if the Emperor of the Southern Kingdom responded right away, would be the day they received word back.

His thoughts were all over the place and this showed as he pushed himself even harder. His cocoa scent was surrounding the area but it wasn't going to affect anyone since there was no one around. Besides, training easily caused people's scents to naturally come out.

The Alpha sighed as he sheathed his sword, taking a deep breath as he sat down on the ground. He opened his water flask and took a big gulp. His mind was still flowing with these thoughts.

What if the request for the alliance was accepted? He would meet his supposed husband in less than a month. Damn, was this even real? Zi'Ang could not even believe it himself.

He guessed he didn't believe he would ever be married, whether for love or just arranged. His brother was the Crown Prince so he always thought he would be the one to marry first since he would be the one to claim the throne.

When it came to love, Zi'Ang never showed any interest in anyone or at least he didn't find the time to. He mostly would practice to make himself stronger to be able to fight for his kingdom. Everyday was the same for him; arise, eat, train, sleep, repeat.

It wasn't boring to him. If he found interest in any other little thing, he'd do it for a month before he grew tired. He, of course, did not want to subject some poor Omega to this life of his. Sure, most would not mind since the status that would come with it would be enough. However, that was not enough for Zi'Ang. He'd like to think if he had to marry and have an Omega bear his mark, he would have to love this person with every fiber of his body.

Besides, he could not exactly marry someone unless they were of royal status. All of the Omegas he met whether they were invited because his father knew their fathers or because there was some event in the palace, Zi'Ang never liked them. They were either trying to push themselves on him to gain attention or probably just his royal status to give their family some more status.

He even wondered if there was an Omega who was high in the hierarchy that was true to him or herself.

And that was the bad thing about it. Zi'Ang knew he liked both genders but everyone he met was just -he couldn't even put it into words anymore.-

Zi'Ang sighed, putting his flask back on his belt with force that even scared himself. The sun was beginning to rise which meant he was already training for two hours. He was becoming hungry.

It was probably around the seventh hour of the day now so breakfast would be served shortly. Zi'Ang quickly made it back inside and was greeted by one of the maids.

“Prepare a bath for me. I will join my family when I am finished,” the woman bowed and set off to do what she was told with a few short words of acknowledgment.

The maid and a few others quickly prepared the bath. When they were finished, they left the room, letting Zi'Ang know that breakfast would be ready in half an hour.

Zi'Ang relaxed into the water, a deep sigh leaving him. When he realised that his mind was ready to form thoughts, built on nothing but expectations, he quickly cleaned himself.

Zi'Ang got himself dressed, not even bothering to get help from the maids. He just wanted to reach the dining room and fill his stomach with food. Maybe the voices of his family would be enough to drain these thoughts.

He made it to the dining hall and both of his brothers and father were present. There were some maids around as usual and guards as well.

When Duan Zi'Ang came into sight, Duan Xiang raised his arms. The Emperor took some time to swallow the food in his mouth but still called his son over.

“Zi'Ang! Come, come.”

Zi'Ang bowed slightly, before raising his head and sitting down at his position. Breakfast was already served which he was thankful for.

Zi'Ang looked at his father strangely and when Xiang noticed this, he laughed. “We haven't heard anything back as yet. You're still single for a while longer,” he joked lightly. Zi'Ang laughed a bit at that though the matter was serious. This was his life promised to another, after all.

“We do have to laugh a bit, Father,” Qi'Ang then spoke and ears listened. The Crown Prince sighed, not wanting to bring up the kingdoms of the East so, he did not. He hid his expression that was about to be sour, instantly lightening the mood as he served a plate to Zi'Ang.

The family spoke about whatever they wanted in that moment, being mindful of certain things to keep up a particular standard, especially in front of the others present in the room.

It was then that a guard came closer to the table from his spot at the door. The man bowed, capturing the attention of the four Alpha men.

“Your Majesty, the messenger has arrived.”

Duan Xiang raised his eyebrows, shock showing on his features. “Then what are we waiting for? Bring him in!”

The guard nodded, looking at the others at the door. At the Emperor's words, they opened the double doors, allowing the messenger to enter the dining hall.

Everyone's attention was drawn to the letter in his hand. Usually, with matters such as this one, the Emperor would call a meeting in the throne room. That could not wait, however. This was a long awaited letter.

The messenger bowed, the letter out in front of him. “Your Majesty, Xiao Shuyian, Emperor of the Nan Hui Kingdom has responded.”

Duan Xiang took the letter after cleaning his hands and drying them. His sons who were eating silently, stopped, their attention drawn on their father's actions.

Xiang opened the letter and as his eyes trailed the contents of it, everyone waited patiently.

The Emperor's expression went through a series of changes. His brows were furrowed, then they raised. His mouth that was chewing, paused and then finally, the Emperor raised his head.

“Xiao Shuyian has accepted the alliance. He and his entourage will arrive on the sixth day of the seventh month.”

“That is ten days from now,” Qi'Ang spoke up.

“I have to marry the Omega Prince of the Nan Hui Kingdom in ten days?” While Duan Xiang did not pay his second son any attention as he read the letter again, Duan Qi'Ang and Duan Huaiyi looked at their brother through squinted eyes. Qi'Ang looked worried and Huaiyi just looked as if he was calling his brother a fool silently in his mind.

“Of course not, Zi'Ang,” Qi'Ang lightly tapped him on his back. "It is usually a few months after meeting but once tension does not arise amongst us and the enemies, you will be given more time to court the Omega Prince of Nan Hui.”

Zi'Ang nodded in understanding, breathing out a sigh of relief. He had to quietly ask his brothers to forgive him for his dumb moment.

Duan Xiang spoke, placing the letter on the table and then he continued to eat. “This is wonderful. We have to make sure this meeting is nothing short of perfect.”

The Crown Prince agreed, making a suggestion to his father. “The best food will be served and the best entertainment will be provided. Leave this part to me, Father.”

Duan Zi'Ang believed his older brother was a bit too excited for this meeting.

Duan Zi'Ang only hummed under his breath though his nerves were grating at him. At this point, the only thing he could do was wait until his future mate arrived at the doors of the Jibei Kingdom.

Chapter Text

As recommended by the royal council, the arrival of the delegation of the Nan Hui Kingdom should not be grand. Sure, they would arrive and may capture eyes but the outside world should not know who these visitors were.

At least not yet.

This will prevent word spreading to those outside kingdoms. After all, to gain money, outsiders would be allowed to visit the city whether they were visiting or passing through. Word could easily spread by the wrong eyes seeing or the wrong ears hearing.

The citizens of the kingdom believed it to be a celebration for the recent gains. Most have heard about the increase of monies coming into the kingdom so they thought nothing of it when carriages upon carriages arrived in Jibei's Kingdom Halls. These carriages were filled with dancers, musicians and other forms of entertainment. Some citizens tried to steal a peek through the doors but were blocked by the guards.

This was just preparation for tomorrow. Nan Hui's entourage would not arrive until tomorrow but it never hurt to prepare early. As Duan Xiang said, this meeting must be nothing short of perfect. After all, he had to make sure that Xiao Shuyian knew his son would be safe. Duan Xiang had no Omega sons or daughters but if he had one to give their hand in marriage to someone else, he would want to know that they were cared for.

Especially with the rise of wars.

In this present moment, Duan Zi'Ang could just watch as many people ran around the imperial palace trying to get things in order. Even at his spot in the garden as he sipped on some water, the maids were not hard to miss. The newcomers that were the musicians as well as others were taken to rooms to rest in. Their food will be served to them at various times.

Zi'Ang took a deep breath as he watched silently. In just a few short hours, he would meet his future mate. It didn't get any more real than that.

He remembered the words of his older brother and because of that, Zi'Ang tried to be more open about the situation. His mind then wandered since that was all he could do at the moment. He began to think about what kind of Omega his future mate could be.

Would he be nice? Would he be quiet? What kind of scent did he have? Was it a scent that would compliment his cocoa?

What about his views on the future? Did he want any children and what did he see for himself? What did he like to do? Duan Zi'Ang had so many unanswered questions but as any sensible person would think, they could only be answered if he spoke to the source himself.

He could only hope that the pressure from the east and west would ease a little so he would have time to at least court the Omega Prince of Nan Hui. That would be nicer than just jumping into a marriage with him.

Zi'Ang sucked his teeth, getting up from his spot. He passed a few of the bustling people in the imperial palace as he made it back to his chambers. He had some work to finish up but it could wait.

His mind would not allow him to successfully complete it anyway.

Night had fallen and from the darkness of the outside world, everything became more real for Duan Zi'Ang.

The crowd in the imperial palace had calmed down much to his relief. Duan Zi'Ang entered the throne hall for the first time that day and everything was transformed.

Where there was just the colours of Jibei and his father's throne along with other small decorations, more tables were added with plates and cups placed down in a specific order. Duan Zi'Ang walked around and his eyes travelled until they landed on their flag, standing proudly beside his father's throne. The easiest thing to see was the grand carpet leading from the double doors right to the Emperor's throne.

Zi'Ang thought for a moment when he remembered it was suggested not to make everything so grand but then he recalled that thought. Everything must be perfect as his father and older brother mentioned. Besides, when the carriages arrive tomorrow with Nan Hui's delegation, no one will see the people on the inside. The carriages will be led through the gates and the gates will be closed. The people of Nan Hui will only get out once the carriages safely reach the imperial palace of Jibei.

“What do you think?” Zi'Ang turned around as that familiar voice caught his attention. His older brother came into sight, a gentle smile on his face as he walked closer to Zi'Ang. Zi'Ang only hummed.

“Well, it certainly is ‘perfect’ as you and Father wanted it to be.”

Duan Qi'Ang chuckled softly, a soft sigh leaving him. “This is a big change, especially for you," The older Alpha said teasingly. Then, he continued with, "Zi'Ang, how about going into the city tonight to take your mind off things for a while?”

Zi'Ang was a bit surprised at the slight change in topic but responded just as quickly. “How can I? Father would want me to practically scrub myself clean in preparation for tomorrow.”

Qi'Ang scoffed though it sounded more like a laugh. “You have all tomorrow morning to do that. Don't worry, Zi'Ang. I will cover for you so go ahead.”

Zi'Ang bit his lip, still a bit skeptical at the suggestion. However, he couldn't deny that he did want to get away for a while. The second prince looked between the double doors and his brother, the suggestion getting the best of him.

“Okay, then. I will be back in an hour or two,” the younger of the two said. “Don't let Father know I am gone.”

Qi'Ang patted his shoulder. “Don’t worry, Zi'Ang. Go ahead and just be careful. Don't let anyone see you. Here,” the older Alpha continued, taking off his cloak to hand to his brother.

Zi'Ang took it with a smile and with a simple nod, the second prince left the imperial palace, being mindful of the guards present.

In about twenty minutes, with the help of his martial arts, Zi'Ang was able to make it to the city quickly. He drew his cloak closer since the wind blew the bottom from his face. Some people looked at him strangely but since his brother's cloak had their kingdom's emblem, those people only shrugged and turned their heads. They probably assumed he was an imperial guard.

Zi'Ang looked around but what caught his attention as he walked were the citizens entering this particular inn. Some of the inn's workers were outside inviting them in and since it was so big, more people decided to show up. Zi'Ang was one of those people.

He couldn't help but look everywhere as he entered the inn. The city crowd was larger than usual today, people celebrating the recent increase of funds for the Jibei Kingdom. However, something was telling him that the innkeepers had something special going on to draw most of the crowd there.

Waiters were scrambling to deliver food as people waited. Others were watching the dance that was currently commencing, their eyes drawn in awe. The noise in the inn was loud but not annoying. It was just people enjoying themselves.

“Young Master, are you perhaps looking for a table? We have plenty but you may want to be seated quickly. A foreigner has requested to play a musical piece for us,” Zi'Ang looked down through the top part of the cloak as the waiter who approached him spoke. The man was currently still talking but Zi'Ang did not hear the rest of what he said. Instead, he nodded to be seated at a table.

Zi'Ang was seated, thanks to the waiter. The waiter then told him he would get him some water and a little later, he would ask him about what food he wanted. Zi'Ang only nodded since his attention, as everyone else's were now on someone else.

A figure walked up to the front. Eyes immediately landed on the young man, murmurs sounding throughout the inn. The same noise that Zi'Ang heard as soon as he entered the inn was quickly dwindling as this person captured the people's attention.

‘Wow, such beauty. Is he an Omega?’

‘A zither? Not many people can play those instruments well.’

Zi'Ang had to agree with some of the statements but the one that stuck with him the most was how handsome this person indeed was. The robes that he wore were enough to tell that this man was a noble of some sort but the waiter did say he was a foreigner. So why exactly was a foreign noble in Jibei?

Moreover, why was a noble playing music in some inn? Usually, it was someone playing music for a noble, especially in an inn such as this one. Zi'Ang's interest piqued but not for the same reasons as the others present.

The Omega bowed and took a seat in front of everyone. The citizens who were eating and drinking immediately went quiet as the first string of the zither was plucked, no time wasted.

Zi'Ang watched as the noble continued to play, his eyes sometimes closing as he focused on his musical piece. The Alpha tried his best to figure out what place this music sounded like it was from but he came up with no answers. It certainly did not sound like some of the music played in the North.

The second prince did not realise he zoned out as he began to think. It was only when he heard noise again that his mind cleared.

As everyone applauded the Omega, Zi'Ang only watched him intensely, strange thoughts running through his mind. When a waiter offered the beauty a seat down below with everyone else, Zi'Ang's eyes still followed. Even as another waiter beside him was asking him what he wanted to eat, Zi'Ang only raised a hand to silence him. The waiter grumbled and walked away.

A few people, mostly Betas, approached the Omega once he was seated. The Omega did greet them but Zi'Ang could tell he was a bit uncomfortable. Zi'Ang took it upon himself and slowly approached the table.

With his cloak, being mysterious and all, when he reached the table, the Betas and Alphas looked at him. Their faces immediately scrunched as they looked at him awkwardly.

“What do you want?” One of the Betas asked, voice laced with annoyance. Zi'Ang paid him no mind as he continued to gaze into the eyes of the Omega who was now looking at him.

“Is he deaf?” Another asked, laughter following behind it. Zi'Ang then decided to look at them, his teeth gritting as he sat down, uninvited.

“Scram,” he calmly said, causing the strangers to look at him strangely. They began to laugh but Zi'Ang was serious. He assumed they did not see the emblem he was wearing. At least thinking he was an imperial guard would scare them a little. Perhaps, they were too drunk.

“Are you fucking stupid? Can't you see we are busy here?” They ignored Zi'Ang and looked at the Omega again, grimy smiles on their faces. “Pretty Omega, do you have a mate?”

Zi'Ang could only laugh to himself. If he had to remove his cloak, that would be enough to scare these fools off. However, he couldn't be that stupid. His father would then know he left the imperial palace.

Instead, Zi'Ang released his scent, his cocoa bursting through the room and turning heads. Everything in the room seemed to pause; the music stopping and the dancers looking around.  Even the foreign Omega had to place a hand to his nose, eyes watering as he attempted to shield himself from it.

Zi'Ang's eyes only darkened as the Betas and Alphas at the table became submissive to him. Zi'Ang remained unfazed as the strangers got up from the table swiftly, leaving the inn. They even forgot to pay the innkeepers.

Reeling back his scent, people could breathe again though it still lingered. Zi'Ang then turned to look at the Omega whose lips were parted slightly. Whether in shock or thankfulness, Zi'Ang did not know.

Normally, at an Alpha displaying his or her scents in such a dominant manner, it typically frightened off Omegas. However, this Omega only drew his zither closer to himself, his hand slowly moving from his nose as he tilted his head. “And who might my knight in shining armor be?” Asked the Omega, a small smirk on his face as he propped himself upon his arm. Zi'Ang raised an eyebrow. He did not miss the small sniffles from the Omega. His scent probably still lingered.

“No knight in shining armor,” he answered, tone a little stern. “This Alpha is just wondering why a noble Omega is out here alone. Especially one from a foreign state.”

Zi'Ang dissected the Omega's expression but could not pick anything from it. He looked calm, a bit too calm as he slid his fingers along the strings of his zither. The Omega then pulled a pouch from around his waist, placing some gold down between two fingers that was enough to pay for his unfinished meal as well as the Betas’ and Alphas’ own who ran away.

“I'm guessing based on the disguise that you are a guard of some sort? Alpha, I'm only here on business. You have nothing to be worried about.”

Zi'Ang squinted his eyes at the loose term of the word ‘Alpha.’ He cleared his throat in an attempt to focus on the matter at hand. He could not allow his eyes to gaze at those plump lips too long or that nice jawline. The Alpha prince hummed and looked down at the food.

“Business typically means trouble,” he then said, breaking the silence once more. He was too paranoid with the threats from the outside kingdoms and he could not blame himself for that. It was best to be paranoid than unsure and then take no action, for it to then cause problems for his people.

“Well, this Omega doesn't want trouble. If it helps, I do not know any martial arts,” and Zi'Ang could tell now. He found it a bit strange that he could not feel any qi rolling off this man in waves. Even as an Omega, he should still have a bit, especially as a noble.

Now that it was mentioned, Zi'Ang was a bit surprised. That was quite unusual.

“Why?” Zi'Ang asked, more curious than anything.

The Omega chuckled softly as he got up. Zi'Ang, like a puppy, followed behind the Omega who was leaving the inn. He convinced himself that it was for answers.

“Why?” The Omega parroted, taking his time as he strolled down the street. “Alpha, at least get to know me first. That question is a bit loaded for the first date, is it not?”

Zi'Ang paused in his tracks even as the Omega continued to walk. When he processed the question, a blush bloomed on Zi'Ang's face, his voice catching in his throat as he tried to speak.

“What? At least tell me your name!” Zi'Ang shouted as he stayed at his spot in the middle of the street. In instances such as this one, Zi'Ang would pester until he received answers. However, something was telling him that this Omega was not as dangerous as he made himself out to be.

People looked around at him at his outburst but he couldn't be focused on them. His attention was solely on the beauty standing beside a toy stand, a vendor selling paper fans and rabbits.

Zi'Ang watched closely, even in the dim lighting as the Omega smiled, eyes gazing at the stand before looking back at him, “Xiao Tuzi,” he answered, a smug grin on his face. “See you soon, Alpha.”

The Omega disappeared as he continued on his journey, leaving Zi'Ang where he was. Zi'Ang was confused as to what just happened.

Especially now that his heart was skipping beats without permission.

Zi'Ang made it back to the imperial palace, the Alpha quickly taking off the cloak. His mind was still as baffled as when he left the streets, constantly going back to the strange Omega.

He was mindful of the guards as he was when he first left. Once he got back over the walls, he was greeted by Qi'Ang who had a confused look on his face.

“Zi'Ang," his brother spoke quickly, brows furrowed. "We agreed on one or two hours! You were gone for four. I thought something happened,” Zi'Ang grimaced. He didn't realise it was that long.

Zi'Ang had an apologetic expression showing on his features. “I'm sorry, brother. My mind was just all over the place.”

Qi'Ang’s features eventually softened, a sigh leaving him. “It is fine. It was just I had to keep Father unaware. I've never told so many fake stories in my life.” Zi'Ang had to laugh at that. “Anyway, what kept you out there for so long?”

Zi'Ang sighed, his bottom lip trapped between his teeth. As his mind replayed the events of tonight again, another sigh left him.

“I've met a foreigner.”

Qi'Ang raised an eyebrow. “So? That is expected now.”

Zi'Ang shook his head. “No, this one was an Omega noble. Brother, his flirting skills were unmatched."

Qi'Ang reeled back a little, an amused expression on his face. “No, no, Zi'Ang. Don't go falling for someone now that you have to be married," Qi'Ang teased but his tone held a sense of seriousness. "Besides, what makes this Omega so different from the rest? You've never shown any interest in the ones you've met.”

Zi'Ang pouted, scratching at his head. “I don't know and I don't want to talk about it,” Qi'Ang shrugged, laughing softly.

“Good because you are promised to another.”

Zi'Ang shot his brother a look. “I'm going to bed.” He was not awake enough for this conversation.

Zi'Ang was woken up early, though this was his normal schedule.

He ate breakfast with his family and then he was pulled away for a bath. A basin was well-prepared for him in his room and a few maids were there to clean him. Due to the influx of his thoughts, Zi'Ang told them he'd like to be alone.

He cleaned every part of his body though no one would see any part of him under his robes. The said robes were laid out for him, black lined with gold accents to showcase his status as second prince and one of the nation's Alphas. Once Zi'Ang was dried, the Alpha carefully put on his robes. He was actually putting effort into his appearance.

His father would not have it any other way.

A maid was called to do his hair in a ponytail. He could do it on his own but something told him his father would not be pleased if he knew that he did. A maid would be better able to do it for him.

Once the woman was done, she bowed and then spoke. “Young Master, everyone is already seated in the palace hall. They are awaiting your presence.”

Zi'Ang nodded once, the Alpha turning to take in his appearance in the mirror. He raised his head high and even with the heavy robes covering his neck, he could still see his scent gland showing greatly. Those large veins were great for attracting potential mates.

His scent, however, was not as strong now. Anyone who came close would still be able to smell his cocoa scent.

“You can lead me there.”

The maid nodded. “Yes, Second Prince.”

Zi'Ang followed the maid as she walked down the halls. They both eventually made it to the doors on the side that would lead to the imperial hall, guards present.

The guards at the doors bowed and pushed them open. Once he had entered the rooms, everyone's heads turned toward him. Duan Xiang had a large smile on his face as he welcomed his son, Duan Qi'Ang and Duan Huaiyi smiling as well. The royal council that were also present bowed to greet their second prince.

“Zi'Ang, you are well-dressed! Come, come. Nan Hui's delegation should be here shortly.”

The Emperor took his seat back on the throne and Zi'Ang took his seat between his brothers. He noticed how everyone had plates and cups along with utensils present on their tables whereas his own was bare. It was questionable but he had no time to raise it to receive any answers. A voice broke him from his thoughts.

“Your Majesty! The entourage from The Nan Hui Kingdom has arrived!” The high eunuch announced. Everyone's heads in the room turned toward the double doors that were already opened.

Duan Xiang stood up just as he sat down, the Alpha Emperor displaying a large smile on his face. His cheek bones were probably strained at this point in time. “Quickly, invite them in!”

The others in the room stood. Duan Zi'Ang did not once take his eyes from the doors as he waited to see what could be considered the rest of his life walk through those doors.

Once everyone quieted down, the eunuch spoke.

“Introducing the Emperor of the Nan Hui Kingdom, Xiao Shuyian!” The High Eunuch’s voice ran loud in the throne room. It was then that Xiao Shuyian graced the room with his presence, head raised high with a large smile on his face.

“Shuyian!” Duan Xiang stepped down from his high steps to be levelled with Shuyian. Both Emperors greeted each other as they had known one another for years while the others in the room bowed slightly. Duan Xiang did mention they were old friends.

“I was thrilled to see the invitation for an alliance, my friend,” Shuyian mentioned. “With the recent threats and all, this is a good move. I did not think about it, I'm afraid.”

Xiang hummed in agreement, patting his friend on his shoulder. “Less worries, friend. Merging our two kingdoms will help us greatly but enough of this. Come meet my sons. This is a happy occasion.”

As Xiang introduced Qi'Ang and Huaiyi, the rest of the entourage of the Nan Hui Kingdom had entered the throne room and were seated. Even as Xiang brought Shuyian to Zi'Ang, the second prince's eyes were still on the double doors, awaiting the star of the show.

Zi'Ang was able to pull his eyes away for a couple of seconds to greet Xiao Shuyian.

“Well? Where is your son? I am sure everyone is waiting to see him,” Duan Xiang said exactly what everyone was thinking. Murmurs arose but were ceased just as quickly as the Jibei's Emperor raised his hand. Xiao Shuyian nodded his head.

“Shuhe is still in the carriage. You know how I love grand entrances and all,” Shuyian smugly said. Xiang could not disagree.

“Ah, one thing that never changed about you.”

When Xiang raised a hand to the high eunuch the man quickly acknowledged the Emperor. With that small action, he introduced the long awaited person.

“Introducing Xiao Shuhe, Omega Prince of the Nan Hui Kingdom!”

Zi'Ang stared, even for those long seconds where the doorway stood clear.

A pin could drop in the room and it would be heard with how quiet it was. Everyone watched as a figure graced the room with his presence, clad in the colours of white and gold, accents with his state's emblem proudly on those robes.

A fan blocked his face but his scent made a bold statement. Even behind that fan, one could tell that the Omega Prince had his head high, proudly showing that he was one with the Nan Hui Kingdom whether or not he would be married into Jibei.

One foot in front of the other, he walked the path until he reached the two Emperors standing in the middle. Once he had reached his destination, Xiao Shuhe lowered his fan, hands out in front of him as he bowed to the Emperors.

“This Omega kindly greets the Emperor of Jibei,” his voice was silky and held a sense of reassurance as he spoke. “My name is Xiao Shuhe, sixth prince and only Omega of Emperor Xiao Shuyian's children.”

Even as his father praised this ‘Xiao Shuhe’ for his gracefulness, Duan Zi'Ang was in a state of confusion. Even as the people in the room commented on his beauty and his state of dress, speaking about how soft and gentle he appeared to be, Zi'Ang's mind was still muddled with thoughts.

Who would've thought the Omega he met last night would be the one he would be married to? Did this ‘Xiao Shuhe’ know it was him last night? Did those words ‘see you soon, Alpha,’ held any sort of real meaning? Duan Zi'Ang believed he was thinking more than he should.

The only words that could pass his lips at the moment, however, were ‘Xiao Tuzi.’

He whispered those words to himself quietly.

Chapter Text

Zi'Ang was staring at his promised Omega that he did not notice his father calling out to him. It was only when his younger brother lightly tapped his shoulder that he snapped out of his thoughts.

“Already lovestruck, are you?” Duan Xiang teased. Zi'Ang blinked and cleared his throat, catching himself as he walked toward the three. He barely saw Xiao Shuhe bringing the fan to his lips, his cheekbones high which made it easy for him to see that the Omega was smiling.

Now that he was close by, his father continued. “Your tea and snacks have been set up in the gazebo. You can thank your brother for suggesting this.”

If Zi'Ang had half a mind, he'd ask his father which one but he was 100% certain that it was the older one.

Instead, he nodded to his father and turned to bow toward Xiao Shuyian. “Permission to escort your son to the gazebo, Emperor Xiao Shuyian.” The Nan Hui Emperor was surprised to say the least but the older Alpha agreed.

“Of course.”

Duan Zi'Ang held out his hand, body still out in a slight bow as he waited on Xiao Shuhe. The Omega had his lips parted, those same lips that teased him all throughout the night the day before.

When Shuhe placed his hand in his, Zi'Ang held it gently. It was soft, even though he was sure these hands constantly played the zither. It was a stray thought but Zi'Ang couldn't help but smile to himself.

He hid it before anyone could notice.

He led Shuhe to the gazebo. It was only when they made it there that the two separated hands which was surprising to say the least. He first waited on Shuhe to sit comfortably before he took his own seat in front of him. A couple of guards were present from the Jibei Kingdom and Zi'Ang noticed another that he was not quite familiar with.

“This is Huo Ying, my personal guard,” Shuhe said when he saw Zi'Ang staring at him for longer than expected. When Zi'Ang heard those words, the Alpha nodded.

Shuhe poured the tea for the two of them, eyes focusing on the task at hand. Duan Zi'Ang stared at the Omega as he watched him. He could not deny that Shuhe was a beauty and he thought that from when he saw him yesterday.

He wasn't head over heels or love stricken but he could not deny it when he saw a handsome or beautiful Omega. Shuhe really was beautiful and his outfit seemed to bring out that beauty more. The chain lying on his forehead accentuated the look and the structure and layers of his robes did too. His vanilla scent complimented him as well.

He wanted to ask him many questions, the main one being if Shuhe knew he was one of the princes last night. Zi'Ang's thoughts basically remained in his mind.

“You do not have to worry, Alpha. After all, I am not going anywhere.”

He did not get to utter a word, confusion etched on his face as he processed what was said. Zi'Ang blinked when Shuhe spoke again and asked, “What do you mean?”

Shuhe placed the teapot back onto the tray, placing a cup in front of Zi'Ang. “You are staring so immensely so I am just assuring you.”

Zi'Ang sucked in a breath, inaudibly. This Omega was planning to kill him with these words. Zi'Ang hummed but decided to change the subject.

“So,” he took a sip of his tea. When he swallowed, he continued with, “Xiao Tuzi?”

Shuhe chuckled softly, slender fingers picking up one of the sweet biscuits on the plate. He brought the treat to his nose, taking a small whiff. Zi'Ang did not miss the small smile on his features before the Omega spoke. “You didn't expect me to give a stranger my name, did you? Besides, you may call me bunny some time in the future.”

Zi'Ang had to clear his throat for what seemed like the umpteenth time since he met this Omega. He could feel his cheeks growing hot and he wondered if Shuhe would be able to see the redness in them.

He hoped not.

“But for now, you can call me Shuhe,” Shuhe continued, deciding to spare Zi'Ang from more of his teasing. He wasn't sure if the Alpha could take anymore of it. The thought alone made him laugh a little.

Zi'Ang hummed and said, “Then you can call me Zi'Ang,” he wasn't sure if his heart could take this Omega calling him ‘Alpha’ for much longer.

It was silent once more. Zi'Ang continued to sip on his tea and Shuhe ate a few more of the biscuits. The Omega looked at them and nodded in approval.

“What do you think about the arranged marriage between the two of us?” Ziang asked, breaking the silence. He wasn't sure if this was a good topic but he didn't exactly want to talk about the threats from the outside kingdoms. Furthermore, he couldn't allow them to sit here silent for the rest of the time they had. After all, they were going to be married so they should get to know one another.

Shuhe looked up at the Alpha as he spoke. He took a napkin, lightly patting his lips to remove any crumbs. Once his mouth was empty, he answered.

“I was not particularly opposed,” said Shuhe but then he hummed. “Do not get me wrong. I didn't exactly want to marry a stranger but when Father mentioned that courting would occur first for some months, I was grateful. At least I could get to see who I will be spending my life with before the marriage.”

Zi'Ang nodded slightly, understanding where he was coming from. For him, the moment the thought came up, he was opposed to it. He did not want to tell Shuhe that.

He was glad the Omega did not ask the question in return.

“Another thing too,” Shuhe spoke again after some time. “An alliance between two kingdoms can help us.” The Omega's eyes did not meet Zi'Ang's own as he talked. However, Zi'Ang was looking at him.

His mind could not prepare him for the next statement.

“You're also handsome, Zi'Ang. I just hope your personality is the same.”

Zi'Ang had to pat his chest when the biscuit went down the wrong pipe. Shuhe stood up from the table and went to rub the Alpha's back to soothe him.

Zi'Ang broke out in a cold sweat once he had composed himself. His thoughts were running rampant as his mind replayed what Shuhe said. This Omega really was good with words. Zi'Ang was becoming more intrigued and impressed by the minute.

One of these days, he would get Shuhe back. After all, they had a lifetime.

For now, he would see how much teasing his heart could take.

“Are you okay?” Shuhe had a slight smile on his face, hand still to the Alpha's back. With how close he was, Zi'Ang could smell his sweet vanilla scent. The Alpha cleared his throat.

“I'm fine,” he mumbled, drinking some of the tea to wash down the biscuits. Shuhe really had the audacity to ask him if he was alright after his shamelessness.

Zi'Ang couldn't lie and say he did not like it. Shuhe did not hide his speech and that was more relieving than anything. A noble Omega was expected to be meek and quiet, showcasing softness and keeping a certain standard.

Shuhe to Zi'Ang was shameless though he had a particular softness to him. His appearance was that of an Omega and he spoke well but the playful side to him had a nice touch.

Zi'Ang still did not feel anything for the Omega in front of him or at least he willed himself to believe that. Time would eventually tell.

Trying to change the subject, Zi'Ang asked the question he wanted to since the beginning. “Did you know it was me last night? And also, how come you were in the inn?” His eyes were still watering a bit from the cough and his throat was a bit raspy. He barely heard the soft chuckle from Shuhe before he spoke.

“Well, I knew you were someone. We arrived in Jibei earlier than we expected so I took the chance to explore. Father did not know I left when I did,” Shuhe began, a ghost of a smile on his face.

“I like to play music and saw the inn had a celebration so I thought why not? I played and then I saw this mysterious figure. The cloak you wore was different from the guards and I saw the emblem, so I assumed you were one of the Princes of Jibei.”

Zi'Ang listened carefully as Shuhe continued. “I wondered exactly why this prince was out in the city unguarded but figured it was the same reason as me. To probably clear his mind from an arranged marriage and the thoughts about how his life can drastically change in a blink of an eye. I assumed it was you but I guess my assumption was right.”

When Shuhe was finished speaking, Zi'Ang did nothing but stare at him. The Alpha had to close his mouth when he realised he had it slightly ajar, clearing his throat from any embarrassing feelings surging through him.

He looked at Shuhe for a bit longer but the Omega did not look at him. He appeared to be deep in thought, his fingers mindlessly playing with the sleeves of his robe.

Zi'Ang saw him in a different light. Shuhe may not have martial arts but he was smart. If he was able to think about all of that just by looking and observing, that was enough.

Zi'Ang wanted to talk with him more.

The two were together for a while longer but not as long as Zi'Ang would've liked. A maid eventually came up to them. The woman bowed and then spoke.

“Second Prince Zi'Ang, the Emperor requests your presence. Nan Hui's Sixth Prince Shuhe, the Emperor prepared a room for you to play your pieces. He believes that you will be pleased.”

Zi'Ang and Shuhe shared a look. When the maid was finished speaking, Shuhe smiled, the Omega clapping softly.

“Really? How thoughtful of His Majesty. I must thank him.”

Zi'Ang sat for a little while longer. He knew he would find his father in his office room, probably present with Emperor Xiao Shuyian. More than likely, he was expected to be there to discuss the ongoing matters with the outside kingdoms. As Zi'Ang thought about it, he almost wanted Shuhe present. He decided to leave him, however, since he was excited about playing his zither.

He watched as Shuhe stood up to follow the young maid. Before the Omega left, however, he turned around, a gentle smile on his face as he bowed to Zi'Ang.

“I guess I will see you soon, Zi'Ang? Maybe you will allow me to play a piece for you.”

Zi'Ang stared at Shuhe for longer than necessary and the Omega did the same, the two of them not blinking. When Zi'Ang processed Shuhe's words, the Alpha nodded.

“This Alpha will be pleased to hear your music.”

Shuhe chuckled, fixing his robes as he followed the maid. Zi'Ang did not miss the way the Omega slightly looked back as he walked ahead, his personal guard following next to him. He had to look away when he found his eyes gazing inappropriately.

Zi'Ang sighed and made his way to the Emperor's office room, his thoughts more than when he first came to the gazebo.

Night had fallen. The meeting took longer than Zi'Ang expected.

He hadn't seen Shuhe since the morning time but he figured it would be too late to go to the Omega now. After the meeting this morning, Zi'Ang only had time to eat before he had to train and was thrust into another. It was a long day.

At this point, Zi'Ang only wanted to sleep.

He left his father's office room, his older brother following close by. The older Alpha nudged him with his shoulders, his hands clasped behind his back.

“So?” Qi'Ang asked, a smirk on his face. Zi'Ang raised an eyebrow, having to put a hand to his mouth as he yawned. He really was tired.

“So, what?” Zi'Ang questioned. He had a general idea as to what Qi'Ang was getting at but found it best to fish for answers.

“So, what do you think about the sixth prince of Nan Hui?” Zi'Ang shrugged but then something came to mind. He remembered telling his brother about the foreign noble he met at the inn but did not tell him it was Shuhe.

“Do you remember that thing I told you yesterday? About the foreign noble?” Qi'Ang nodded, though a bit skeptical, trying to understand where the conversation was going. “That person was Shuhe.” Zi'Ang blurted.

Qi'Ang stopped in his tracks, his eyebrows practically through the roof. “Nooo,” he muttered and stressed the word. Zi'Ang nodded his head.

“Yesss. It was a surprise when I realised.”

Qi'Ang brought a hand up to his chin in thought. “What was he doing out there anyway? That means the delegation has been here since last night,” the Crown Prince murmured. “Hm, they could've spent the night here if they wanted to.”

Zi'Ang hummed. He thought about what Shuhe told him about playing in the inn but found it best to speak nothing about it. He guessed it would be their secret.

Qi'Ang remained silent for some time as the two of them continued to walk side by side. The older Alpha made a questionable sound that made Zi'Ang look at him.

“Well, I guess the Omega you showed interest in will be yours now,” the Crown Prince grinned. “I was actually looking forward to taking his hand in marriage in case you changed your mind, you know.”

Zi'Ang laughed loudly, startling some of the maids that were walking the halls. Qi'Ang also had to laugh at his brother's outburst.

“You're still on that?”

Qi'Ang nodded his head. “Of course! Do you see him? He is such a beauty and if you said he was a master flirter, points for me.”

Zi'Ang shook his head in amusement. “Father has to find someone for you. That Omega is already taken.”

Qi'Ang hummed, a slight smirk on his face. “Then… I guess you are not against marrying him?” His voice came out in a teasing manner.

Zi'Ang shrugged his shoulders. “For the time that we spoke, he seemed… interesting. I don't love him but he isn't hard to like either.”

Qi'Ang nodded in understanding. “And that makes sense, Zi'Ang. No one would expect you to fall head over heels with him on the first meeting. This time is for you both to get to know one another so use it wisely. Perhaps, in the near future, Xiao Shuhe will bear your mark and you will his. Thus, a successful alliance.”

Zi'Ang didn't say anything. He just thought about his brother's words. After some time, the older Alpha broke the silence when he talked again.

“Anyway, enough of that. How did it go? I realised Father got a room prepared for Xiao Shuhe to play his instrument,” Qi'Ang trailed off. “I didn't know he played the zither. Not many people play.”

Zi'Ang cracked a small smile. “Mhm and he plays well too.”

The two brothers continued to converse and Zi'Ang almost forgot that he was tired, too immersed in the conversation with his brother about his future mate.

A few days later, Shuhe found Zi'Ang.

For the couple of days that Shuhe was in the kingdom, Duan Xiang arranged certain things for them to be able to spend more time together, whether it was dinner or time around the imperial palace.

Now though, Shuhe was walking the gardens after lunch, his zither in hand. He had the room that Duan Xiang allowed him to use but outside was bright and sunny. He chose to be in the gardens today.

Walking on the outside, the Omega paused in his tracks when he heard the swish of a sword. Grunts followed and he wondered if there was some training going on. The garden in the imperial palace was large but not big enough to train an army.

It hadn't sounded that way though.

Peeking around a pillar, Shuhe saw the person responsible for the sounds. There Zi'Ang was, the Alpha practicing with effortless ease as he moved his body. His swordplay was like an art and Shuhe watched as if he was the one that was going to paint.

The Alpha was handsome, his black robes making him more so. His sharp jawline also brought out his features more. Shuhe could not help but smile.

Holding his zither tightly, Shuhe made himself seen though Zi'Ang was still engaged. He was focusing so hard on his training that he did not see Shuhe.

Shuhe sat on one of the benches in the gardens, laying his zither on his crossed legs. He watched the Alpha for a bit longer, taking in his cocoa scent that became more prominent the longer he trained. When Shuhe settled himself, the Omega took a deep breath.

Shuhe plucked the first string and a sound was made. He began to make more notes, playing a soft sound that he composed. Only a few notes in, did Zi'Ang recognise that he was there.

The Alpha paused his training but Shuhe did not stop playing. “I promised to play for you,” the Omega softly said, a smile still present on his face.

Zi'Ang stared at him for a while. The Alpha stepped forward and went to sheathe his sword but Shuhe shook his head.

“No, don't stop training,” he mentioned, fingers still plucking the strings of his zither. Even through his speech, he did not miss a beat or hit a wrong note. “Your swordplay is like an art and I want you to move to my music.”

Zi'Ang was speechless, eyebrows raised at Shuhe's comment. The Alpha may have wanted to say something but he wasn't sure how to. Instead, he pulled his sword out that he only had sheathed halfway to continue his training.

Zi'Ang moved to Shuhe's music, no. Zi'Ang moved and Shuhe matched his movements. At the realisation, a rare smile formed on Zi'Ang's face. The Alpha only appeared to move much more carefully, the swishes of his sword increasing in sound. His hair danced in the wind and his robes followed; Zi'Ang creating the art and Shuhe's music telling a story.

Zi'Ang could feel his heartbeat increasing and he wasn't sure whether it was from the intense movements or the way Shuhe's music matched his movements. Zi'Ang was not certain if it was from his intention to impress the Omega or the words he said before.

Shuhe felt no different, the Omega watching the Alpha like he was telling his favourite story. Shuhe did not know whether the intensity of it all made him feel hot or if it was the sun. He felt a bit confused.

He almost felt a bit scared.

He wondered if Zi'Ang felt the same.

So engaged with each other, they didn't even notice prying eyes. However, it was nothing to worry about, only the Crown Prince of Jibei smiling softly before he left them to be alone.

Chapter Text

A month had passed since the delegation of the Nan Hui Kingdom arrived in the Jibei Kingdom.

Emperor Xiao Shuyian had to go back to his kingdom which was expected. He could not be away for too long, although his oldest son, the Crown Prince of Nan Hui took his place.

He received word that there was a potential breach at their western gates. Emperor Duan Xiang told Emperor Shuyian if there was anything he needed, be it men to help strengthen their posts or minds to help create more ideas, he would be there to help.

Usually, when the Emperor left, his people would follow him. However, Shuyian did not want that and requested for his sixth son to stay in Jibei longer with his betrothed. It didn't seem as if Shuhe wanted to leave as yet either. In a case like this, since Shuyian had to go back to Nan Hui, he sent his oldest son, Xiao Shu Qian to be with Shuhe.

Duan Zi'Ang was not sure he liked the change.

In the space of the past month, he and Shuhe were able to spend more time together. Of course, Zi'Ang still had his duties where he had to train and attend royal court meetings. They did not have any follow-through threats so far as Nan Hui did but his presence was still vital in times like these.

When there was time -and his father made sure there was enough of that- he and Shuhe were able to take walks and visit various places in the city. They were still in the ‘getting to know each other’ phase but slowly and surely, the two would be reaching that point.

Though, Zi'Ang felt that with everything they did, Xiao Shu Qian was watching.

Whereas, with the Emperor of Nan Hui, if Zi'Ang wanted to take Shuhe out of the imperial palace's walls to show him the kingdom, it was fine. Both of their fathers only required they have guards with them. Shuhe's personal guard, Huo Ying, had to be present as well.

With Shu Qian, it was a different story.

And he was only in Jibei for nine days!

Zi'Ang, at this moment, wanted to take Shuhe to a place where he knew many people came to play instruments. It was presently the only place in Jibei where music of all sorts was played and someone who enjoyed music such as Shuhe would want to go.

He had told the Omega about it a few days ago and Shuhe was extremely excited. Zi'Ang already had the carriage prepared and already made space so nothing could ruin the day. Huo Ying was already alerted about the plan along with another guard. Everything was perfect.

Zi'Ang was also dressed for the occasion, the Alpha wearing dark blues robes and hair done in a tight ponytail, only a few strands out to frame his wonderful face.

When Zi'Ang saw Shuhe, he felt as if his breath was taken away from him. Spending time with Shuhe for the past month every single day was enough for him to gradually start to have feelings for the Omega and many other factors contributed to that.

Shuhe was quiet and sensible just as he was shameless. Thankfully, they still have more time to get to know each other more. Duan Zi'Ang just wanted to be sure this was not a fleeting moment and this was really what he wanted. They would still have to be married nevertheless but knowing where his heart lied was just as important.

He wasn't sure if Shuhe felt the same since the two of them never mentioned it between each other.

They didn't have to label it yet.

The Omega was dressed in white with accents of gold, his gold forehead chain present as well. His robes weren't the usual where they were heavily layered. Instead, he wore two at most. The typical feminine robes that Omegas wore.

Zi'Ang had never seen Shuhe dressed this way but whatever way the Omega was dressed, he was just as beautiful. Zi'Ang could not deny that fact.

The two were ready to go into the carriage when they heard a voice. When Zi'Ang turned around, the Alpha had to basically force himself not to roll his eyes. Shu Qian was there in all of his glory, the Crown Prince of Nan Hui having a stern look on his face as he gazed at the two.

“Ah, Gege,” Shuhe smiled, holding out his arms to give his brother a hug. Although embracing his younger brother, Shu Qian's eyes were on Zi'Ang and if the Nan Hui's prince had the ability to scorch him with his gaze, Zi'Ang would be burnt to a crisp.

“Where are you two headed?” Shu Qian asked. Zi'Ang guessed he should've said something but the Alpha was just so hard to approach.

Shuhe hummed, his smile never faltering. “Zi'Ang is taking me out to a musical gathering. It is said the best musicians will be there.”

Shu Qian blinked, immediate disapproval showing on his features as he muttered, “Is that so?”

Zi'Ang refused to speak. Why was this man so upset? The two of them were to be wedded and were given the chance to engage with one another before that step. This was benefitting for both kingdoms.

In his stead, Shuhe spoke, his smile now faltering. “Yes,” and realising the situation and his brother's unsatisfied face, he held Zi'Ang's arms in his. It felt like a comforting touch, as if Shuhe was reassuring him.

“Well, we will be going,” Shuhe murmured, pulling Zi'Ang along. Once the two of them were outside, the guards already present by the carriage, Zi'Ang did not miss how the Omega let out a sigh of relief.

They entered the carriage, Shuhe sticking to the Alpha. Even from his spot, Zi'Ang could see how the Omega peeked at him. He probably noticed his furrowed brows.

“Don't mind him, Zi'Ang,” Shuhe softly said as the carriage began to roll along. Only the two of them were inside. “He is just overprotective of me.”

Zi'Ang guessed he could understand to some extent. He had no Omega siblings but since they were described as fragile, one may be protective of them.

They still had to grow, however.

“Why so much though?” Zi'Ang asked through pouty lips. “He looks like he wants to kill me for being close to you. He knows we will be wedded, right?”

Shuhe laughed softly, drawing himself closer to Zi'Ang. Zi'Ang realised the Omega was doing this more often, a form of comfort found in skinship. He did not refuse the Omega.

“I have no martial arts so my brothers were reluctant to join this alliance. My father told them they could not keep me in Nan Hui forever. You would've thought that he would be the one reluctant to let me go.”

Zi'Ang blinked a few times. “I guess I understand.” He spoke softly. “Well, you're here now. So they have to put trust in Jibei that we can protect you.” Zi'Ang spoke with a firm voice. He wanted to say something else, in between minds if he should actually continue. In the end, the Alpha made the best decision he could yet as opposed to keeping his thoughts to himself.

“And I can too.”

Shuhe gazed up at him, the Omega automatically parting his lips in slight surprise. He was usually the one to push himself toward Zi'Ang, throwing flirty words or obvious signs that he may be interested despite the short meeting time span. Zi'Ang was practically the opposite though he did not ever disregard him.

So to hear his words now, Shuhe could not help but be surprised. A small smile formed on the Omega's lips and instead of saying anything, Shuhe rested his head back on the Alpha's shoulder, hands squeezing his arm gently.

He was comfortable, taking in the scent that was cocoa. He hadn't noticed that his vanilla aroma made a stronger appearance.

Zi'Ang noticed it.

He did not say anything.

Instead, he smiled.

Making it back to the imperial palace after a long day was more than relieving. However, Zi'Ang could not deny that the afternoon was well spent, a small smile on his face as the carriage rolled to a stop.

Shuhe was sleeping on his lap, the Omega's hair framing his soft features. Zi'Ang unconsciously ran a hand through those strands, sometimes touching Shuhe's face as he gazed at him. The Omega did not stir.

When the curtain was drawn back, the guard was about to speak. Zi'Ang quickly brought a finger to his lips to silence him, his eyes never leaving Shuhe and his hand still rubbing the Omega's head.

After a few moments, Zi'Ang realised that Shuhe was not going to wake up. So, the Alpha gently held up to carefully shift Shuhe, pulling him in his lap so he could cradle the Omega. Zi'Ang quietly asked the guard to keep the curtain open so he would be able to get out while holding Shuhe in his arms.

On his way out, Zi'Ang had to pause in his tracks when he noticed Shu Qian right in front of him. The Alpha gritted his teeth but said nothing. To be respectful, he nodded in acknowledgement to the Crown Prince of Nan Hui before making his way to where Shuhe was resting for his stay in Jibei.

Zi'Ang noticed Shu Qian following. When he made it to Shuhe's room, maids present by the door, Zi'Ang rested the Omega carefully on the bed. He took off his shoes all the while his soon-to-be brother-in-law was watching. Zi'Ang did not pay any attention to Shu Qian.

A soft smile was on the Alpha's face as he ran a hand down Shuhe's face. Even with Shu Qian watching like a hawk, Zi'Ang did what he usually did. Zi'Ang wasn't sure exactly what the Alpha was thinking at this moment, watching him like this. He wasn't going to do anything to Shuhe but he guessed Shu Qian watching wasn't a problem. After all, he was in Shuhe's safe space.

It could almost be called a nest.

After looking at the Omega for a bit longer, Zi'Ang took his leave. The maids by the doors closed them both carefully, mindful not to wake a sleeping Shuhe. Zi'Ang exited the room and looked Shu Qian in the eyes, waiting for his speech.

“May I have a word with the Second Prince?" Shu Qian asked. Zi'Ang tilted his head a bit but the Alpha did not once show fear. Shu Qian had to understand that Shuhe would be his mate whether he liked it or not. The two Emperors made an agreement that was sealed and no one could break it. Besides, he would not show fear to Shu Qian. If he wanted to prove to him that he could protect Shuhe, he had to remain strong both in mind and in physical appearance.

“Yes, you may,” answered Zi'Ang confidently. Shu Qian stared at him for longer than necessary, the Alpha huffing under his breath before he began to walk off. Zi'Ang did not show fright as he followed next to him, the two of them ending up roaming the imperial palace's walls.

It was quiet for some time. Zi'Ang refused to speak since Shu Qian wanted to speak first. The Alpha waited patiently.

When Shu Qian eventually began, Zi'Ang listened carefully.

“Shuhe has never shown any interest in anyone, let alone any Alpha,” the Crown Prince of Nan Hui spoke, his voice holding a tone of authority. Zi'Ang blinked a few times, but kept his lips tight together.

“When Father received the letter for an alliance, my other brothers assumed it was going to be one of us. No one expected for the Jibei Kingdom to ask for the Omega Prince of our nation.”

Shu Qian continued. “Shuhe does not have any martial arts but I believe you already know that. Duan Zi’Ang, understand that my brothers and I would do anything to protect our youngest brother, even if that means dying. Shuhe has a heart of gold and we know that when he falls in love, he will fall hard. I can already see it in such a short space of time.”

Duan Zi'Ang still remained quiet, allowing the Alpha to continue and Zi'Ang actually listened to his words despite the start they had. “This alliance is beneficial but Shuhe is more important. He will be here for a few more weeks and we hope that all goes well. Duan Zi'Ang, take care of our brother or it will not end how we both want it to.”

Zi'Ang thought about Shu Qian's words, taking everything he said into consideration. He knew it was mostly protectiveness over the sixth prince and he could understand that. He would do anything to protect his brothers also.

After a moment of silence, Zi'Ang parted his lips, ready to speak. He thought for a bit, closing his mouth again. When he knew what he wanted to say, the Alpha tried again.

“Xiao Shu Qian, your brother is an interesting one,” Zi'Ang spoke and for a second, he couldn't believe he was here having a normal conversation with Nan Hui's Crown Prince. The Alpha that was giving him dirty looks not too long ago was actually here with him, listening to what he had to say. Zi'Ang continued.

“Rest assured that Shuhe will be safe with Jibei. I may be young but already have the morals of my father. We were taught that one mate was enough and although I'm still getting to know Shuhe, it is not impossible to see him as such,” Zi'Ang paused, the words having a certain taste in his mouth. He smiled unknowingly.

“If I was not interested, it would be easy to tell. Xiao Shu Qian, do not worry. I will do my best to protect him and Jibei will too.”

Xiao Shu Qian looked at Zi'Ang, the Alpha searching the latter's face to find any bit of truth in his words. After a long while, Shu Qian probably smiled for the first time to Duan Zi'Ang. It did not reach his eyes but for Zi'Ang, that was enough.

“Alright, Duan Zi'Ang. We will leave the rest to you.”

Zi'Ang took a deep breath as he relaxed in the bath, his mind replaying events of the day.

Beside the conversation with Xiao Shu Qian, Zi'Ang thought to himself that the day went well. Even after that conversation, Zi'Ang believed the day went well too. He understood Shu Qian's concerns. He and Shuhe were surely getting there, after spending so much time together. No one made any confession but Zi'Ang guessed that time would be soon.

A smile unconsciously formed on his face as he thought about his Omega to be. Shuhe clinged to him as they walked through the city streets, practically pointing at everything that caught his attention. The two of them had to wear cloaks to block their faces but nevertheless, it was a good day.

When he caught himself, he cleared his throat although no one was in the room. He could only imagine the smirk his older brother would be sporting if he ever found him subconsciously thinking about Shuhe.

Zi'Ang rested his head back on the rim of the basin, his long hair splayed over the tub. He didn't wash it this time though he believed he should. He didn't want to go through the trouble of drying it at the moment. The events of the day were catching up to him in the form of sleep.

Zi'Ang was so caught in his tiredness that he did not notice the opening of the doors. Even so, he had retired for the night so he was not expecting anyone in his room. Especially not his bathroom.

When he heard the soft gasp, the Alpha jumped. He didn't attempt to hide himself though he was already submerged in the water. Shuhe, on the other hand, who saw him in the bath, attempted to leave the room, only to bump his head on the frame and drop the tray he was carrying in his hand.

“Sorry, sorry,” the Omega spoke, well, more like he muttered the words under his breath. Duan Zi'Ang heard it clearly.

Zi'Ang wondered for a second why and how Shuhe even got to his room. His and Shuhe's rooms were guarded against each other to prevent any mishaps. After all, they were an Alpha and Omega pair in the process of courting and marriage. Anything could happen.

There were heats and ruts and to prevent any premature mating, the two were kept separated in cases like this. So, this was all a bit confusing.

Zi'Ang didn't have any time to think about that, however. The Alpha hopped out of the basin to go and check on Shuhe.

Dripping wet and water loudly hitting the floor, Zi'Ang walked the short distance to help the Omega who was holding his head, not once paying attention to his nude figure.

“Shuhe, are you alright?” He was genuinely concerned. Shuhe, who had his eyes closed, nodded. He too did not think about anything, not until he opened his eyes and let out another soft gasp as he did when he first entered the room.

Shuhe wanted to pull away and run far. Zi'Ang had a tight grip on him, however. Not to scare him but more in concern at the hit he received on his head.

“Zi'Ang,” Shuhe's voice trembled, the Omega not once looking down as they both stood from the floor. The little snacks that were on the tray were left forgotten.

Zi'Ang only noticed what Shuhe was talking about, water dropping from his body in the form of large drops, soaking the floor beneath them both. In most cases, Zi'Ang would instantly cover himself to hide from whoever, even the maids.

Now though, Zi'Ang's mind was thinking of the exact opposite.

The Alpha smiled, one that was quickly forming into a smirk. He let go of Shuhe's hands that he was holding and with one step forward, Shuhe took one step back. Zi'Ang took another step forward and Shuhe followed suit, taking another step back until he reached the wall, his back touching it.

Zi'Ang was a complete contrast to how he was a few seconds ago. Shuhe was not hurt so concerned behaviour quickly turned into that of a teasing one when he saw the blush coating Shuhe's cheeks. Whether it was from the heat in the room or the actions now occurring, Zi'Ang did not know.

“What Shuhe?” Zi'Ang's voice was small until it sounded nonexistent. Shuhe heard him loudly, even though his heart was beating in his ears. His eyes were rapidly searching his potential Alpha's eyes, constantly shifting from left to right.

Zi'Ang remembered all of the times Shuhe teased him that he wondered if the Omega ever felt shame. Now, he had him exactly where he wanted him and Zi'Ang could not hide that desire to make Shuhe just as flustered as he often made him.

Shuhe tried to look everywhere except for down below. The Omega's eyes searched Zi'Ang's face and even his neck where that large scent gland lay. Shuhe gulped, watching the water sliding down the Alpha's neck and down to his collar bone. His body immediately slicked due to no command of his.

If Zi'Ang could smell it, he made no obvious reaction.

“So you can tease me and I cannot tease you?” Zi'Ang continued, his voice silky smooth as he brought a hand next to Shuhe's head, purposely putting his body in a viewing position for Shuhe's eyes.

This time, Duan Zi'Ang held no shame.

He almost wanted Shuhe to look down but the Omega was not budging.

This was dangerous. An Alpha and Omega pair, even with one naked and the other fully clothed was still a problem. Arousal was clear in the room and the strong scent of vanilla was clouding Zi'Ang's judgment. His cocoa scent followed suit.

He leaned forward, nose pressing against Shuhe's scent gland as he sighed softly. From the moment his nose touched Shuhe's neck, the Omega whimpered. It was music to Zi'Ang's ears.

This was dangerous, even more so when Zi'Ang stuck out his tongue to trace Shuhe's ear. He felt the shiver that wracked through the Omega. Zi'Ang smugly grinned.

It was only when Shuhe's slick became stronger that Zi'Ang instantly snapped out of his thoughts. He would've liked to take this further; every fiber of his body knew he wanted to but rationality took over.

He looked at Shuhe, shock written all over his face. For their bodies to react in such a way meant they both felt something for each other. It was a relief as much as it was scary.

Zi'Ang did not have time to think about anything more as Shuhe looked at him for a bit longer before he scrambled out of the room. The tray with the sweets was left forgotten.

Zi'Ang himself did not want to look down, embarrassed at the feeling coursing through him. For a moment though, he couldn't help but smile softly to himself.

He wondered what the day would hold for them tomorrow.
