Broken Tooth Realizations

Summary:

Buddy had seen a lot of weird things here on Snaktooth. The Bugsnax themselves was a good example. But this, this took the cake. An island they KNOW wasn't there a minute ago rising out of the sea in front of their and their sibling's eyes. There was no way they weren't going to explore such a strange phenomenon!
Gathering Shelda, Floofty, and Triffany, they set off to explore the new island.
...But the mysteries don't stop at the creatures, old civilizations, and a new island. No, the others will find out something much more.

Buddy's secret couldn't stay a secret forever after all.

Notes:

I actually can't believe we're already here. This is the beginning of the end, but also the one I had been the most excited to write. No warnings on this first chapter, enjoy!

Chapter 1: Part 1

Chapter Text

“Um my dear sibling, please come see this-” That was quite the way to come into town, Buddy looking at Snorpy worriedly. Chandlo and him had been off since he was yelled at about going up to the mountain without telling the other. So, to say they were worried seeing him like this was an understatement. They followed him to the side of the mill, where his sensor lay. “The seismic readings have been off the charts today, I fear something terrible is happening just off the coast. We're heading to Simmering Springs to investigate, as we know you'd go on your own and we won't let you.” He said sternly, making them shyly blush. “I-I’ll make sure I have everything, then we'll go there.” He nodded, petting through their heads and making them melt into the touch. It seemed the other Grumpi were all very much aware of them being touch starved now, and all that meant was a lot more pets, hugs, and general affection. Which was amazing! They shook away the desire to just stay there and let their older brother pet through their fur for hours, hurrying over to grab supplies. They decided to grab some more med stuff, just in case, and their back up snaktrap.

After triple checking their bag, they hurried back to Snorpy, following him and Chandlo down to Simmering Springs. “Bros, you got enough sunscreen on?”

“...Why would we need sunscreen on if we have fur?-” They giggled as Chandlo noggied them for the comment, yelling playfully to quit it. “Snorpy help!!” He laughed, picking up the smaller and placing them on his shoulders. “There, you are safe from the bully.” They giggled, sticking out their tongue making the other sigh exaggeratedly. “Not cool bro, using your height against me.”

“Anything to protect my younger sibling from your schemes.” Buddy once again laughed, looking out at the sea. “What's gonna happen Snorpy?”

“I'm unsure, but the event should be happening any-” They all yelped as the ground shook, Buddy gripping onto their brother fearfully as the other two kept their balance. “What was that?? They're usually not so intense!” Chandlo called out, checking on the other two. Buddy said shakingly they didn't know, as another hit the 3 once more. They heard the ground splitting, looking quickly over to the sound despite how scared they should be. They knew Snorpy wouldn't let them fall though. They trusted him.

Using the new glasses Floofty had given them, they were able to see far into the water… and see a sight greater than anything.

An island they KNEW wasn't there before just rose out of the sea, fully formed and everything.

“IT'S A WHOLE NEW ISLAND DAWG! We gotta get over there!” They nodded quickly, in pure shock seeing an entire new part of the earth that had risen in less than a minute. “...I, yes, but, surely this is a job bigger than just us 3.” They didn't understand his worry as he peaked up at them. But apparently Chandlo did. “...Bro, I understand why you're worried, but Buddy will go with or without us. At least we can keep an eye on them.” It was weird, hearing someone worried for them. “I-I have to go! This is revolutionary!” Snorpy held their legs close to his body, them softly hugging his head to comfort him. “You're right though dawg, we should gather some more Grumpi for our expedition. Shelda’s wisdom with nature could certainly help!”

“...Yes, Shelda… We should gather our smartest scientific minds! Triffany and, ugh, Floofty.” Buddy playfully flicked him, they liked Floofty a lot. They were, honestly seeing the scientist as another sibling slowly. “I can go get them, you both try and think of a way across!” Snorpy, though not wanting to, nodded helping them down from his shoulders. “Very well, we shall see you soon sibling.” They nodded and hurried back to Snaxburg to talk to the 3.

They were so excited! Exploring a whole other island was already amazing, but with their new friends and siblings by their side? What else could they wish for! They hurried over to Shelda first, since she was as usual closest to Simmering Springs. “Shelda!!” They shouted, hurrying over. She looked up, obviously confused. “Child, what is the reason for your excitement?” She didn't talk much in her prophet voice to Buddy anymore, unless around others. “You'll never believe it, a whole new island popped out! Me, Chandlo and Snorpy are going to explore it, I came to ask you and 2 others about joining!” She smiled down at them. “I, am very honored you'd ask me Buddy… I accept. Cause, if that island is what I'm thinking it is… I need to see it for myself.” Though confused at the cryptic answer, they still happily nodded glad she'd be joining. “Wait by the path to Shimmering Springs once you're ready to go!” They called out, hurrying to find Triffany.

She was, unsurprisingly, in her tent looking at a skeleton she dug up. “Oh hello dear! You seem excited, what's going on?” They once again explained, Triffany smiling brightly. “You better believe I'm coming along! Islands don't just pop into being usually, how interesting!” They nodded excitedly, telling her to pack and meet them at the path, before going to look for Floofty. For once they were actually inside their hut, looking over before they could even knock.

“Greetings. What is the purpose of your visit Buddy?” As they explained, it was weird seeing their usually completely neutral expression turning into shock and general confusion. “Hm… so an unknown piece of geography erupted from the ocean, unexplained and unstable, possible to sink again… Of course I'm going!” They giggled. “Let me just grab my equipment, I'll meet you and whoever else you gathered at the path to the beach.” They nodded, heading over to where they told everyone to meet them and waiting. Unsurprisingly they came mainly in order of how they told them, with Floofty taking a bit longer with grabbing all of their equipment. “...Oh, great, you're bringing along the liar.” Floofty said while glaring at Shelda. They grew anxious, as Shelda scoffed.

“One will not bother with interacting with the foul chemist.”

“Oh your still pre-”

“Stop! Please-” They begged, the two quickly looking to them. “... Buddy, one is sorry. One is ready to go.” Floofty only was silent, but still placed an awkward hand on Buddy's shoulder to apologize before heading along. They sighed in relief, following them down the winding path.

Their eyes widened as they noticed the dock and boat that was certainly not there 30 minutes ago. ‘How fast is Chandlo??’ They thought bewildered, heading over. “We're ready!”

“Oh, so soon?”

“Yeah, it's perfect we just finished!” Snorpy cleared his throat. “Well, I'm unsure I still think we should take a bit to think-”

“Wow, nice work on that raft Chandlo!” Triffany interrupted. “Thanks Broffany!” They laughed at the nickname lightly, not noticing how the sound brightened everyone's mood. “Of course you can easily get volunteers Snorpington.” Floofty said, looking out towards the newly formed island. “...You know, 6 folks is kind of, a lot for a newly formed raft. Maybe one of us should stay home.” Somehow, both Floofty and Shelda said “which one” at the exact same time, Buddy tilting their head letting their strongest brother pick them up.

Anyone else would probably be more annoyed by how often they all did so, but they really enjoyed being held. “Um, well, maybe me and, Chandlo and, no that’s pretty much all of us, uh-” Buddy grew concerned seeing how Snorpy was acting, obviously anxious. “What? Why would we not go, we're who built this in the first place! And we both know Buddy ain't gonna be stopped.”

“I know- BUT LOOK AT IT! It could so easily be a death trap, it's dangerous-”

“... So you gathered us to be bait?-” Triffany said, more so joking but concerned with how Snorpy was acting. “No! But-” Buddy made a small gesture to be put down, Chandlo slowly abiding as they hurried and hugged their other brother. “Snorpy, it's ok to feel anxious about this… maybe you should stay here? Keep an eye from back here? You could always contact us through the radio.” He slowly nodded, though still seeming unsure. “But, bro! We do everything and go everywhere together! What if something happens to you while I'm gone?”

“Wh- me?? Chandlo you all are the ones going off to uncharted territory!”

“Yes yes anything can happen, you two act like the world is ending whenever your seperated. It certainly isn't healthy.” Floofty said, their arms crossed. Shelda, though not purposely, agreed with what they said. “You two are like mirrors, reflecting endlessly. One must look away from the infinite abyss and gaze down at only oneself.” They held back a giggle as Snorpy said a loud confused what, as Chandlo nodded understandingly. “Far it be for me to give any life advice, but there's nothing wrong with a lil’ time apart. It's actually healthy to not be with someone 24/7!”

They didn't know that… guess it does make sense though. Being too dependant on anyone, even if that person was great, probably wasn't good. “... Alright, if, you all agree…”

“I agree Chandlo, plus we'll be in contact through the radio the entire time!” The green Grumpus slowly nodded. “Right… ok. Let's get this party started then!” They held back a flinch as Snorpy suddenly wrapped his arms around them, then melted into it hugging him back. They didn't like making him worry… but no way we're they not going to explore. Chandlo walked over, hugging Snorpy back. He whispered something to his, totally not boyfriend-  which made their heart melt.

“Don't worry, I'll protect our little sib Snorp. I promise you.” The other's tenseness drained, thanking him silently. They held back smiling as brightly as they wanted to, slowly separating. “...Be careful everyone.” They all agreed, slowly heading onto the raft. Once everyone was sitting down, Chandlo unwrapped it from the dock, heading to the island.

They waved at Snorpy until he became no more than a blob, slowly sitting on Chandlo’s lap for the journey. Staring at the new island, they couldn't help the nervousness swirling through their stomach.

…Why did something about this feel so wrong?

Chapter 2: Part 2

Notes:

Next part! No warnings for this one, it's mainly just an introduction into Brokentooth, like the dlc itself!
Also, important info. I will not update this story at all next week, as I'm going on a vacation! It's my first time doing so without parents (I'm turning 21 in a few days) so I'm really excited! The schedule will once again resume the week after though, so enjoy!

Chapter Text

After an hour of sailing, they finally landed on the other side. Chandlo worked on beaching the raft as everyone climbed off, looking at their surroundings. It definitely gave off the feel of being risen from the ocean, with dying/dead coral around. It looked so cool, and so ancient! Once the raft was beached Chandlo called Snorpy. “Alright Snorp-dawg, we made it to the other island! Found some kinda reef-cove thing to land on.” They grew fearful as they heard how the other responded. “Chandlo listen to me this is very important. I need you to understand that-” The radio began cutting out, the only other thing they could understand being “remote detonator” before it went to pure static. “Snorpy!! Shit the radio’s broken-”

“No, I think we are simply out of range.” Triffany explained, Buddy hurrying over to hold their brother's hand. He slowly tried to calm himself, looking over Snaktooth.

“But what if he's…”

“One is sure that Snorpy will be just fine young one.” He sighed, nodding. “Yeah, Snorpy knows we got this. Let's look for a way up across that weird bridge.” They all nodded, Buddy and Chandlo heading up. “Ah, think the Tripshot can do this?” They nodded, seeing a fire that needed to be lit on the other side. They gasped in shock as the bridge expanded, wondering how that technology even worked, let alone after having been in the water for goodness knows how long. They ran across excitedly, Chandlo following. A strange door greeted them, parts still moving despite the water damage. Slowly the others caught up.

“Well would ya look at that! Some kind of ancient maze carving with moving parts and everything!” Triffany said in awe.” “Well, whoever built it put it in our way. Chandlo, you excel in brute force, destroy this.”

“You got-” Both themself and Triffany said no, stopping him. “We shouldn't just smash through things willy nilly! Buddy, mind trying out your Buggy Ball?” They nodded, grabbing Sprout and heading over, putting him in the entrance. They lead him through the maze to the finish line, nearly jumping as the door fell as soon as he reached it. “Goodness! That mechanism still works? How incredible!” They nodded, but still were so confused about how any of this works.

They picked up their little buddy (heh), reaching inside to pet the little guy (who gave a few purrs) and followed the others as they all went beyond the door. They stopped in shock at the sight of the new land, it looked so… cool. Like something from the times of the dinosaurs. “Woaah- It's a jungle out there!”

“Oh goodness, to think that this WHOLE valley was underwater not that long ago! There's evidence of civilization from who knows how long ago! Check out that temple!” They did so, in awe seeing how large it was. “It is impressive… but one is more concerned with the ominous crater that lies beneath.”

…Huh. Shelda was right, how did they miss that. “If my eyes do not deceive me, there's a lot of new varieties of Bugsnax as well.”

“Whoa, sick! Think they could be dangerous?” Buddy grimaced, sure they were. …Holy shit they were huge too!! “Before we get too ahead of ourselves, we should set up a base camp.” Triffany stated. “Wonderful idea, one could use time to- ow- recenter.” Buddy looked at Floofty deadpan as they criticized Shelda. Luckily, before they went further, they all had been shocked hearing Chandlo call out to them. “Brosss! Come check this out!” They hurried to look down, their eyes widened. It looked like a Bunger, but it was HUGE! “It's Bunger time dawgs!”

“Yes, why don't you go fetch it for us Chandlo?” Floofty said sarcastically, focused more on setting up their tent. He hurried down, Buddy immediately following. The other 3 stayed up to get the camp set up.

Buddy looked at the huge creature, unsure how exactly they would catch it. “Chandlo I don’t know if this is a good ide-” They both yelped as the Bunger ran over, Chandlo grabbing Buddy and dodging barely out of the way. It smashed into the wall behind them, revealing some weird stuff. It was a statue of a Grumpi holding something… something with purple mist coming off of it. “... Buddy, I'm so sorry sib. I gotta stop just running into danger…” Buddy nuzzled him calmly to say it was fine. “What's that stuff anyway?” They wondered, scanning it.

Shrink Spice

This strange smoking powder will temporarily shrink gigantic Bugsnax.

They showed it to Chandlo. “... Yo that's weird. But cool!” He helped Buddy onto his shoulders, grabbing the vase and running to the Bunger. Once he threw it, the Bunger immediately shrank to a normal size, to which Buddy set up the trip shot to knock it out. “Nice job bro! … Wish I could give you a bite.” He said with a look of sorry, to which they nuzzled into his fur. “I'm ok bro, I ate a good amount of sauce. Just enjoy your meal.” He nodded doing so, his left horn changing. “Damn, that was like a huge meal in one Bugsnax! Let's go back to the others.” They nodded, holding onto him as they traveled back up to everyone. They worked on helping unpack, impressed at how everything was already coming along. After a bit they got the fire set up, Chandlo basically vibrating ready to say what they found.

“It's crazy! Even the Bungers out here are as big as Mama Mewon was!”

“Gosh, we could be seeing a prehistoric species that was preserved at the bottom of the ocean!”

“And it would aline with my theory that size correlates to age.” They listened curiously, nodding from Chandlo's lap. They enjoyed how often their brother now embraced them, it was so nice. “... The lost sister of Snaktooth lies unburied, yet you marvel at the engorgement of the toxins that dance on her grave…” Shelda muttered, looking out at the island. “Tell me Chandlo, how did you both capture this specimen.” Floofty asked, ignoring the oldest. “We found a jar of some kinda dust, came from this old lady statue thingy.”

“A statue huh? What'd it look like?” Buddy turned to Triffany, explaining. They watched as Shelda's expression turned to shock and horror, growing worried. “No…”

“That sounds like a shrine to Mother Naturae!” Shelda was still sitting there in shock, her Snakified paws shaking lightly.

“Oh yes, why would Mother Naturae, noted despiser of Bugsnax, be dispensing Bugsnax-catching equipment?” Floofty said with the biggest smirk on their face. “Your God, is a hypocrite.” Buddy and Chandlo winced at the same time, knowing quickly how this was going to go. “SILENCE YOU WRETCH! THE MOTHER GUIDES, PROTECTS! IF YOU DARE TO INSULT HER THEN ONE WILL WIELD THE LIGHT OF TRUTH AGAINST YOUR BLASPHEMY!!” Shelda immediately ran off, Buddy growing worried. “... Ok… guess Shelda's gonna go check out those shrines… Meanwhile, I'll go take a look at all the ruins around here. There's so much ancient history to uncover, I'm giddy just thinking about it!”

“I am fascinated by this Shrink Spice and its effects on Snakmatter. If I can determine what exactly it's made of, we certainly can use it for other things.” They all agreed, Buddy still uncertaintly looking over to Shelda. “I know I'm no scientist but I gotta hypothesis. If this island can make Bungers bigger, maybe it can make me bigger!”

“... Not a hypothesis. Honestly what does my brother see in you.” Buddy stuck their tongue out at Floofty, and nearly giggled at her incredulous look. “Did you really just-” “Of course sib ;3”

They all looked at Buddy in shock. “... OH LORD BEFFICA TAUGHT THEM THAT?!”

“HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU DO THAT WITH YOUR FACE??” They broke into laughter, making Chandlo and Triffany chuckle as Floofty held a rare soft expression. “Alright, let's all rest for the night. Then we'll get going.” Everyone headed for their sleeping bag, saying goodnight before letting sleep take them.

… As everyone rested, the island looked to the youngest in thought. …If they weren’t dead yet, it could at least try and make them more useful. So, it sprouted a small flower by them, the smell slowly going into their nose. And it conjured up a dream, one it hoped would finally make their insecurities useful.

But, like everything it tried with Buddy, it always brought something else with it.

Chapter 3: Part 3

Notes:

IM BACK
I didn't have nearly as long of a vacation as I expected, but I still got to see Halloween Horror Nights! It was awesome-
Anyway, this chapter is pretty important, gives a glimpse of things even Buddy doesn't know ;) Warnings for implied child abuse, starvation, self worth issues and referenced nonconsensual drugging.

Also there's some crazy text in this, if you can't read it the end notes contain translations.
Enjoy!

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

“Subject 2436, otherwise known as “Buddy”, doesn't seem to be taking to the matter that we gave them.” Their vision was blurry, but not like it usually was without their new glasses. It felt more unnatural, like they had felt after accidentally taking a pill that certainly wasn't meant for a young Grumpus. They tried to move, but it was like their body was disconnected to their mind. They couldn't even lift their paw at all. “Clumby Clumbernut brought in the 12 year old for their annual check-up, and as usual we gave them a shot of Bugmatter. They usually would show snakification for a moment, then their body would change back quickly. This time, as soon as we gave the shot their body shut down to rid of the infection. No Snakification appeared either.” They couldn't understand, what was happening? Were they dreaming? But why were they dreaming of being young and, hearing some sort of scientist? They again tried to at least move their head, maybe see their surroundings? But they couldn't, couldn't even see if they were on a bed or not.

“It's fascinating, this is the first recorded child to ever consume Snakmatter. Now their immune system knows the reality of these things, and even appealing to their insecurities won't work. The subject isn't aware of Bugsnax, so it isn't anything to do with their knowledge. It is simply their body rejecting it.” They could hear the sound of a pen scribbling onto paper. “We have many tests to do to prepare them for their journey, but Ms. Clumbernut is getting rather frustrated at this pace. Said, and I quote, “I'm stuck taking care of this brat, treating them like shit like you all want, why can't I at least get some use out of ‘m.” Upon asking what kind of use they want out of the young Grumpi, they asked if it was possible to make them work for her. In my professional opinion, that is too risky. They shouldn't be in any sort of public space, since they legally don't exist. But that is up to the higher ups, and I suspect due to Clumby's value they will come up with a way to let “Buddy” help them out. Anything to keep someone I don't even think we really need keep quiet about our organization.” The stranger sighed, as they saw a blurred figure walk over to whatever surface they were on. “But it is not my decision. Clumby has apparently started starving the child, to see if their stomach will take the parasites if they're hungry enough. If our plan to use them to help control the Snax is to work… they need to be completely resistant to the pull, even if they are desperate for substance. The mental turmoil option must also be tested.” Buddy’s breath hitched as they felt their head gripped tightly, trying desperately to struggle away as they noticed a feeding syringe in the strangers hands. But they still couldn't move. “And so will begin the experiment.” As the matter touched their tongue, they were reminded of the Strabby they had tried. But they couldn't do anything but swallow, even while their mind and body screamed trying to reject the liquid. As it slid down their throat, they could now hear voices.

Then they suddenly woke up.

They shot up in their sleeping bag, their chest heaving. Buddy felt they couldn't breath, their lungs felt like there was rope around keeping them restricted. They gasped and hiccuped, tears falling from their eyes. What, what the hell was that?? This was far from the first nightmare they've ever had, but their dreams were usually at least somewhat realistic. Before the island they were mainly Clumby finally throwing them out, old memories of her hurting them, them calling them worthless and watching them die in some way… or the few dreams they had were of their… guardian? Treating them with actual care, or of two indiscernible Grumpi holding them close.

Although, since growing close to the other's, they had many more good dreams, mainly of the others treating them as family. … And that dream of two Grumpi still stayed, but they could see their fur now, being grey and white. And they could hear voices saying that they loved them, that they weren't alone anymore. The voices were completely understandable yet they couldn’t hear anything about the tone, whether it was feminine or masculine, nothing of that sort. Of course their nightmares changed to also include the others saying horrible things about them, hurting them… and sometimes even dying in front of their eyes.

But nothing was like what they just experienced. It felt so… real too. But it didn't make sense.

They felt like they could still hear that voice in their head, saying to feed, saying to give in.

Maybe it just was their fear of Shelda being right that conjured up such a strange dream? They tried to calm themselves, looking over to the fire.

…Floofty was awake, but hadn't seen their panic. They seemed to be sitting on the log and writing…

‘... Didn't they say they also have nightmares?’ They recalled, unsure about going to talk to them. But… sometimes dreams can mean something right? They needed to rest in order to help best… Slowly they wiped away the sweat from their forehead, carefully climbing out of their sleeping bag and quietly walking over. Unsurprisingly Floofty still noticed them no matter how quiet they were. “Buddy, why are you awake? We both know how much you'll be doing tomorrow.” Suddenly they felt stupid, they shouldn't be bothering them- “I-I just, noticed you up, wanted to, s-see if you were ok-” The other sighed, adjusting their glasses. “No offense but your lies are not convincing to me whatsoever… based on your expression, I would ascertain you had a nightmare?” They slowly nodded, anxiously rubbing their arm. “I didn't mean to bother you…” “Nonsense, I am already up. Now, come sit down with me.” They lightly relaxed at their words, doing that. “I personally do not like talking about my dreams, but perhaps you do?”

“... U, Usually I don't… but this one was really strange…” Floofty put down their notebook, giving Buddy their full attention. “Please speak about it if you so wish then.” They smiled shyly, beginning. “Well… I overheard a scientist talking about feeding me Bugsnax, which was weird- they kept talking as if I was a test subject, yet also saying I was 12. I couldn't move, or see anything really. It was all a blur, like I was… drugged? I didn't understand what was going on, as they kept speaking about my body “rejecting snax” and of me being used to help control Bugsnax? I don't understand it at all… my dreams aren't ever really that, strange and unrealistic, and it just didn't make sense… then he forced Bugsnax down my throat and… I heard voices. They started trying to confirm my worst insecurities. I woke up to them telling me to “give in” and to “let them control me”. I just… don't understand it.”

Floofty’s expression was confused and thoughtful. “That is rather strange Buddy… I've heard a matter of dreams, but nothing of that sort. This is the first kind of dream that you've had like that?” They nodded, the Gastroenterologist thinking. “... Unfortunately I am not very versed in the Oneirology, and I am unsure if anyone here is.” They silently nodded sighing. “It's fine… thanks for listening Floofty. I'll go now, sorry for bothering you-” The other sighed in frustration. “Buddy, I am going to say this simply. Asking for help is not a bother. It would only be bothering if I said no and you forced me to say yes, which I feel is something you are incapable of. Plus I can tell you are not feeling ok enough to go back to bed.” The other got up, offering their Snakified paw. “The lump you call “Stepbrother” is unfortunately asleep, and I am well aware of how you'll refuse to wake him up to ask if he'll allow you to sleep with him. Yes, I am aware of how sleeping near others helps your nightmares disappear. So, you will join me in my sleeping bag.”

“W- I wouldn't want to force you into-”

“You fool, let me say this clearly. I am usually not ok with that, but with Snorpington claiming you as his sibling, that means you are technically also mine. And although I am aware I can be, cruel, I am trying to do better. And family is much more important than me trying to act as indifferent as I do. So, you will come rest with me, because you need to sleep as long as possible before you stretch yourself thin with your helpful selfless nature.” They felt tears gather in their eyes, looking at Floofty hopefully.

“... I can, call you older sibling then?”

“Yes, you squeeb.” They said with a smile, making Buddy hiccup emotionally. They took the other's paw, letting the scientist lead them over to their sleeping area. Floofty sat down, as Buddy carefully sat next to them. The older, completely shocking the aqua furred Grumpi, let them rest their head in their lap. They basically melted into the purple fur around them, inhaling their scent with a content sigh. They let out more noises exclaiming their calmness as their fur was slowly pet through, forcing them into a sense of pure lethargicness. Floofty, despite their seeming lack of competence at affection, knew how to pet them better than any of the others. It was hard to explain, they just seemed to know exactly how soft, and where to run their paws through to make them go boneless at the touch. “Rest little sibling, you deserve to dream of good things.” They heard the other's voice say, with a softer tone then Floofty had ever used. Slowly their eyes drooped, letting their body give into the exhaustion. It took only a few moments before they began snoozing again.

… But at first Buddy's dream was of those voices screaming their insecurities.

About how their only use was getting the other's Bugsnax.

About how they needed to keep feeding them, or everyone would leave them…

T̸̞̒h̴̟͋̕e̸̲͈̾i̸̔ͅr̶̫̄ ̶̨͗ͅo̸̹͒̎n̴̙̈̂l̴̻̘̇̉ỷ̶̢ ̶̟̐ů̶̫̺s̶̈́ͅe̶̟̽̔ ̸͖̎ẅ̴͕́å̸͖̕s̸̞̦͆̌ ̷̝͛f̵̙̜̽̔ǫ̷̡͌͠r̴̖͋͘ ̶̡͎̌̀f̶͚̙̿e̴̥̔e̸̘̺̓d̸̻̥͌̿ḭ̵̫͐n̵͔̦͊ǵ̷̦̼̓.̶̺͙̕ ̸̻͛͛

They didn't register the whine that left their throat, shaking. But suddenly they felt arms wrap around them tightly, and heard the sound of a voice. They couldn't hear everything… but they heard enough.

“You aren't a burden. We are your family. Nothing will change that.” Slowly the voices quieted, as their nightmares changed. Now, they were dreaming of affection from their new family… and they knew in their heart everyone loved them for real.

Chandlo awoke as the sun began to rise, yawning and stretching. ‘... Man I don't like waking up without Snorpy…’ was his first thought, looking over towards the journalist's sleeping bag. He froze seeing it empty, shooting up looking around crazily. “Funkbun, no need to panic.” The green Grumpi looked to his technical sibling in law, relaxing and holding back an awe at the cute sight. Man he wished he could take a photo and show Snorpy this, how Buddy was curled up to Floofty, and how the scientist was petting through their fur. “Let me guess, bro had a nightmare?” He asked, to which they nodded.

“Yes… it was a concerning and, strange one as well.” His face showed his concern, walking over but being silent as he sat on the floor by the two. “What ya mean?” They explained what the other told them, his expression turning more and more worried. “That's… concerning.”

“I knew they'd refuse to wake you up so I said to rest with me. Only a few minutes after they fell asleep I heard them mumbling things… about how worthless they were. That they couldn't let us down, how they needed to help so they wouldn't be thrown away.” He froze, looking at his sibling with a sad expression. “... Do… they really think that?”

“... I wish I could say that is preposterous, but the idea they don't is more so. I held them and whispered somethings to calm them down, they seem to be resting well now.” He sighed quietly.

“... I'm worried Floofty. There's so much about them that, makes it clear their home life wasn't, or isn't, ok at all. And I just…”

“...I know, I sense the same. But unless they feel inclined to tell us, we really can't do much but comfort them.” He slowly nodded. “...I don't really think I care about testing out that theory anymore… I just wanna help them out with the others tomorrow.”

“... I'll see if my hypothesis can be tested without them, but we know they'll refuse to not help out the other two. Just stay and make sure they don't overwork themselves.” He nodded in agreement, softly petting his sibling. “...I’m going to search for anything else they can eat on this island…” They nodded, watching as Chandlo got up and left.

He hoped he could help his sibling eat something other than sauce.

Chapter 4: Part 4

Notes:

I'm not the proudest of this chapter honestly, cause most of it is just the normal dlc missions but with Chandlo added. But, it does add some fluff! Anyway, next week will end off the dlc... but I might be taking a break at one point as I have not finished the last part of this story. There's a lot more for me to write out then I at first realized, and since I started posting this I got more and more ideas... so yeah-
Anyways, enjoy!

Chapter Text

Once Buddy awoke, they ate some pb and chocolate sauce by the fire and enjoyed listening to Chandlo talk. “Sorry I couldn't find any other food for you sib…”

“It's fine Chandlo, thank you so much for looking. So, want to go test out your theory?” They asked calmly. He sighed. “Nah, I just wanna help you with the others today bro. I know you'll help with or without me, so I can at least make it easier on you.” That melted their heart, hugging and saying multiple thank yous. He held them back, nuzzling them. “Alright, who first?”

They decided to head over to Shelda, who wanted to check out a shrine unsurprisingly. They headed down, figuring out how to break open the wall to the river, and opening a side entrance to the shrine. They followed Shelda into it, looking around in awe. “This place… it's almost identical to the places I used to visit in my youth.” She said with a smile. Chandlo was shocked hearing her talk in a normal tone, but luckily didn't call attention to it. “...But it's been twisted. Corrupted. Here, Mother Naturae is the Bringer of Bugsnax… I've heard so many stories. Warnings about the toxins, they had even came from experience…” Buddy, feeling anxious, asked about those shrines she had seen first. “Yes, the place where I learned about the beauty and wisdom of this world… It's a frickin parking lot now unfortunately…” the two Grumpi grimaced sympathetically. “Was this the Mother's original form Broda?” Buddy held back a giggle at the nickname, Shelda playfully sighing. *Oh no, she is of purest light, her ageless wisdom vastly predates these violent monstrosities. But of course, her followers are a different story. No one starts on the Path, we all need guidance.” They lightly nodded, asking about the stories she heard. “Grew up hearing about the dangers of Snaktooth Island, from the descendants of those who had survived it. Not that many did live… just enough for a clear message. The toxin must NOT be consumed.” They bit their lip, hoping she wasn't right.

Because if she was… then this was all partly their fault. “W… Why shouldn't Bugsnax be consumed?”

“Because it leads to doom. What kind… I don't know. The stories have gotten frustratingly vague over time.”

“Then Shelda, why'd you come here dawg? If ya knew these aren't good?” She was quiet for a moment. “... I'll let you know once we head to that crater. There's something else I wanna see.” They both slowly nodded, following her. They soon appeared, looking at the strange nest like area. “...Yes, this is the place. In the stories they called this place Brokentooth. So the story goes, the toxins influence grew so great and powerful that the sun itself went dark. And so, Mother Naturae unleashed her wrath on her errant followers, purging the toxin and sending everything into the depths of the oceans.” They listened in shock. “That… was the story you heard?”

“Yes… and now it has somehow risen again. But you know… that story never sat right with me. Destroying the followers who strayed? That doesn't sound like the Mother I know… she can't be the bringer of Bugsnax either, I can't get a straight story so what am I supposed to believe? And if I can't rely on the past wisdom, then what's left is my own experience. That’s why I came here, I had to know. I must meditate…. May you two crack three of those eggler shells while I do so? I, need to think.” They both nodded, letting her do so as they went to find out where the other eggs were. There was one next to where they first found their way into the shrine, by the ancient egg cracker, but they couldn't find the last one.

Chandlo suggested that maybe helping the others could lead to finding where the final one was, to which they nodded. Next up was Triffany, who wanted to head around to the jungle. They followed, her sighing once they were far away from camp. “Kind of nice to be away from the others for a minute huh? Floofty and Shelda’s arguing is a bit much.” Buddy nodded, Chandlo shrugging. Buddy got to opening the maze, inside being a cool looking underground chamber. Inside was a pie like Bugsnax, a pillar that seemed to hold leaders of the past, a collapsed entrance to a chamber, a huge campfire, and a ton of sleeping places for Grumpi. “Yo… it's really cool here.” They nodded in agreement. “I'd say this is a communal living space! Gosh, the technology and nature are so much more advanced than we've seen so far. This must've been the center of Stone Grumpus Society! And the center temple was most likely led by a priestess of Mother Naturae!” They were shocked hearing all the history around them. “Why do you think they made those mazes?” “That's a great question… I'm feeling they probably are simply to show off, as there's much easier ways to lock a door.” They nodded, asking for her information on the Mother. “Honestly don't know too much, I'm not Shelda, but she is a part of the oldest practicing religion! On that subject, it's quite odd there's nothing about Mother Naturae on Snaktooth… perhaps she showed up rather late in their culture and added to the existing worship of Bugsnax.”

Suddenly it made sense… this island combined the two to make a whole different religion in a way. “Well, shall we explore the temple?”

“Thought’d you'd never ask!” Buddy gasped and giggled as Chandlo picked them up, heading up to the temple and using their Snakgrappler to remove a wall. “Remind me to ask if Snorpy can make one of those for me!” She joked continuing up the path. “Alright, now how shall we open up the temple?”

“Something about these flares seem to be working well.” They nodded, setting up the Tripshot and reaching the other side to open the door. Inside was a HUGE maze. “Ok, yeah I think this is just the ancients showing off Broffanny.” Chandlo commented, Buddy nodding with wide eyes. “Yes… but this probably also means whatever is behind this is very important!” They nodded, as the youngest began leading Sprout through it. After about 5 minutes they finally finished. “Great job! Alrighty let's see what-” She stopped seeing the many corpses and boulder that had fallen.

“Yo… this looks bad.”

“... Well, that's a kick in the teeth, so much for seeing the temple… judging by these corpses, this collapse must've happened while they were still living here. Maybe this is connected to that crater? We didn't find a corpse in the commune for some reason… Well, I'll get these boulders outta the way!” The two looked at her like she was crazy. “Dawg, you can't get this done alone. Even I can't do this alone!”

“Oh don't you two worry about that-” Chanflo interrupted sternly. “Bro, we could all open this, but only if we work together.”

“... I'm unsure… those two can't go more than an hour without starting a big fight and I just… freeze up.”

“I know it doesn't seem like it, but those two can cooperate if necessary. Just give me some time ok?” Buddy offered. She sighed but nodded. “Alright, for now I'm heading back to camp. I'll see you two there!” She left, Chandlo looking at the other. “Alright Buddy, now let's take a break so you can eat some sauce.”

“I-I'm ok we-” He held up a paw to say not to bother arguing. They pouted, but began eating some cheese sauce they had packed away. He chatted as they relaxed, looking around them.

… They didn’t know what, but something was wrong with this. They couldn’t help but think about the dream they had, wondering why they had it.

‘...I hope Shelda isn’t right. If she is… I might be responsible for anything bad that happens.’

Chapter 5: Part 5

Only warning is injury, but more so a mention of it happening- Enjoy!

Chapter Text

After their Chandlo enforced break, they began to look for the last Eggler egg they needed for Shelda. Eventually they found a Spaghider carrying it, using their Snakgrappler to bring the egg down. Chandlo managed to carry (just barely) the Eggler down to the Cracker. It was weird seeing him struggle to lift anything, but it must’ve been really heavy. They headed back to Shelda afterwards, her nodding. “Thank you, you two. Know it wasn't an easy task. They're so often in the shape of unliving things, yet these shells are just… shells. Also the only good source of calcium on this island-” They grimaced, but asked if they could maybe cover them in sauce to make them taste good. “... Perhaps?” She shook her head, looking up at the sky.

“Alright… this is going to be tough, so don't feel you have to do this. I'll need the huge flying Bugsnax.” They nodded immediately, them and Chandlo spending a while to figure out how to do so. Wow, was Buddy glad to have Chandlo with them, cause otherwise they would've had to wait forever to be able to perfectly throw on the Shrink Spice before Tripshotting them into the water. Once they grabbed the snak they gave it to Shelda. “Thank you, swear I'm not gonna eat it this time.” She said sarcastically, making them giggle. “I seek the very essence of Bugsnax, what drives them to create their poisonous delights. Unfortunately, have no grumping clue how to do that.”

“You could ask Floofty!” They exclaimed. “... Are you out of your mind- one would never consult with that wicked alchemist!”

“But you said you wish to learn.” She sighed. “...Yes, one wishes to learn. Not to receive long-winded insults. But one must admit, when it comes to delving into the unknown there isn't anyone bolder than Floofty. Well, if that is how it must be, I suppose I don't exactly have anything to lose.”

Heading over, Buddy and Chandlo acting as a median, they waited to see how it would go. “Greetings, one is here on a quest for understanding, to unlock the forbidden knowledge of Bugsnax.”

“Oh, and you've come to me? Why not ask your “Mother Naturae” or a crystal, or whatever you do-” Buddy elbowed Floofty, them scoffing but stopping talking, letting her speak. “The path is… shrouded at the moment. One believes that clearing this impasse requires a more scientific lens.”

“How interesting! Are you certain? I've heard that I tend to “exude a foetid aura of utter evil from every pore”.” They said sarcastically. “Ok, listen. You are reckless, arrogant, and SO SO rude… but I don't actually think you're evil.” They sighed. “Alright, fair. But I want you to speak to me normally, no riddles.”

“... Fine. I wish to learn the essence of Bugsnax, what they're made of. If I can understand that, then I might know whether they're actually separate from Mother Naturae, or born from a dark history of hers…”

“I'm not going to solve your philosophical quandaries. There is no answer to a “why” of the universe, Bugsnax simply are.” Both of them sighed in annoyance.

“Floofbro…”

“You will not change my mi-” Buddy used their secret weapon… puppy dog eyes.

“... You are the actual evil Grumpus.” They grumbled, yet still pet their head. “Very well, I can show you how to extract live Snakmatter for microscopic viewing without it denaturing. Oh yes, and denaturing is-”

“I know what it means Floofty.”

“... You do??” She rolled her eyes. “You know, you might make more friends if you stop assuming they don't know everything.” Floofty was silent for a moment, seeming to actually be thinking about it. “Very well, let's begin our lesson.” They left to their tent, Shelda bowing respectfully. “Thank you for your help child, I appreciate it.” They smiled brightly, waving as she walked over to Floofty. “Nice job Bro, you got those two to actually work together.” They smiled brightly, unconsciously letting out a yawn.

“Alright, I think that means it's time for bed.” They mumbled a no, cuddling up to their older brother. He chuckled, bringing them to their sleeping bag as the sun began to set.

With Chandlo by their side, they didn't have any nightmares that night.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the morning, it seemed the two had finished their experiments, and upon talking to Floofty they found out they had done what they wished to while Buddy had been busy, and had even talked to Shelda about needing help with the Shrink Spice last night! They were very proud. “Well, guess that's everything bro-”
“No! I wanna help you Chandlo!”
“... I really don't think I need anything, I doubt those are gonna help at all. Instead, why don't we shoot some hoops?” They tilted their head. “Are… you sure?”
“Yeah sib! Let's have some fun instead of working!” Buddy immediately nodded then, liking the idea of hanging out more with Chandlo. After setting up a small court, they began to play. Chandlo admittedly went a bit easy so the other could win, but ultimately they had a blast.
… And Buddy thinks it's the first time they really, felt like a normal 16 year old. A few hours after playing, they had noticed Chandlo acting off. “Bro, you hang out here… I think since I'm without Snorpy I'm gonna ask the others a bit of advice. You'll be good on your own right?” They nodded, waving as he walked away.
…They shouldn't eavesdrop… but they wanted to know what he was asking. So they peeked over, listening as he talked to Shelda about his paranoia and anxiety, Triffany about “what if the Grumpinati wasn't just a delusion”, and finally Floofty about what started this. They felt anxious for listening… but they were worried about their brother too. And, they learnt a lot… and it all started to make sense.
They quietly looked out at the setting sun, wondering about how to help their brother…
Therapy seemed to be what he needed… but until they got off of Snaktooth they couldn't give him that. And-
…What were they talking about? By the time they returned to society… they would be going back. Back with a story that might make Clumby proud of them sure… but they knew she'd never do what the others did. They'd never love them like they did. And certainly the others wouldn't care about a random journalist after they returned home…
They bit their lip, looking out to the temple. They slowly left, seeing if they could discover how to get in easier, thinking having a mission would distract their thoughts. Plus nothing would be lost if they failed, they'd just have to wait till the others were ready. They walked up, past the Bugsnax not noticing how every one of them stared at them now that they were alone.
They came across the entrance to the ruins… and were shocked to see the path was open? ‘How… this was blocked not even a day ago!’ Heading into the suspiciously small entryway, they looked around… till they heard something behind them collapse, even ripping their backpack and crushing half their stuff. They yelped, turning back around and seeing the rock suddenly back. ‘How-’ Hurriedly looking for an exit, they called out for help. But they couldn't hear anyone… They felt their breathing get heavier, they were alone- they didn't want to be alone, trapped- They looked in their broken bag to try and grab Sprout… but noticed he wasn't there. “S-Sprout! Please please you weren’t crushed-”
They heard a sound of alarm and worry from the other side, them nearly collapsing in relief that he was ok. “Please, please go get help-” They pleaded, unsure if the snak could even understand them. He let out noises that could’ve been confirmation, and they could hear him rolling away. But did that mean he was doing it? Or just running away from them? They whimpered, trying desperately to find a way to move the rock.
They kept trying, but couldn't do anything… and suddenly the entire place started shaking. They cried out as they slipped from the ledge, falling into the ceremonial chamber. They whined as they felt their ankle twist from the landing, cursing at the throbbing pain. Inside… looked like a place for sacrifice. They froze, as something in the middle burst out. It looked like a cheeseboard… and was the biggest creature they had seen.
They shook as it slowly looked to them… and screamed as it ran ready to slam them into a bloody mess.
