Chapter Text
At first, I didn't understand why Wednesday wanted me of all people to room with her brother. I, of course, didn't mind. I owed her for being my friend when nobody else wanted to, and for caring for me when I was in my coma—caring like no one else did. She, of course, warned me about him, saying he had "more emotions" than she did and that they'd get along well.
Eugene assumed: "Oh! He's just a more emotional Wednesday! I can deal with that just fine!"
Oh boy… was he WRONG.
The first time he met him, He hadn't even learned his name before he shook his hand and he ZAPPED him. It hurt, of course, and Eugene yanked his hand back, rubbing it because it HURT. Pugsley didn't even look apologetic about it; he just smiled. His smile was definitely unnatural.
Apparently, his name was Pugsley, and he was clearly a Spark. True to the Addams name, he was just as much an Addams as Wednesday or her parents were. Eugene will admit he was a bit harsh during their first meeting, but that was because he was freaked out! The guy scared him: he threatened to eat his baby bugs, said getting nearly gutted by a Hyde was "cool," and had a very creepy view of things that just terrified him.
Eugene thought he could handle Pugsley, but he hadn't lasted even one week before he ran to Enid and Wednesday's room, curling up in Enid's plush carpet while yapping to her about how freaked out he was because of his roommate. Enid half-listened, half-stared at Wednesday.
Eugene's POV
"I just don't understand him, Enid! I understand he's an Addams, and I know he's kooky, but this level of kooky is too far!" I yelled into the fluffy blankets and pillows. I poked my head up and looked at Wednesday's desk, where she typed away at her novel. "No offense, Wednesday," I added, dropping my hands back down with a huff. I truly did want to be friends with this boy, but how could he when he freaked me out so much?
"Have you tried talking to him on the same ground as any Addams?" Enid asked, finally looking at Eugene with a tilt of her head.
"I tried! I really tried! But, Enid, even for the Addams, he's weird. I—I thought he'd be like Wednesday or maybe like his mom or dad, but he's not! I've caught him SEVERAL times trying to eat my babies!" I said, exasperated, throwing my hands in the air as I ruffled my curls, unable to wrap my head around his roommate's strange actions.
"Pugsley has never been one to fit in with anything, from what I've been told very scarcely about him and seen from him. Maybe he's like Wednesday and just doesn't understand 'normal' people," Enid offered, seeing how distressed her roommate's friend was. She pointedly avoided looking at Wednesday, whose hands had stopped typing on her typewriter.
"Eugene," Wednesday said, turning in her chair to face them both, getting the beekeeper's attention.
Eugene lifted his head, looking at Wednesday when she called for him. "Yes?" I asked, wondering what my goth best friend wanted.
"You complained Pugsley shocked you the first time you met, constantly tries to follow you, eats your insects, and as you stated, 'creeps' you out, correct?" She listed, waving her hand when she said "creeps" as she folded her hands in her lap. I blinked and slowly nodded.
"Yeah? Why? Is that like… usual for you Addams? Does it have some… meaning?" I asked, confused, watching Wednesday's dark eyes as she took in the confirmation. She turned back to her typewriter, clicking away again. I looked at Enid for translation, but she shrugged, unsure as well.
"Nothing relevant yet, it seems. Tell me if he does more, though. I will talk to him if my theory is right," she said instead, confusing him even more. Was he missing something?
"Enid?" Wednesday said, getting the colorful wolf's attention without turning back again. Enid perked up at the goth's voice.
"Yes?" she confirmed.
"Take Eugene to the Nightshades Library. Try and find the book on this paper. I would like to see if my theory is right," she said, holding out a folded paper to both Enid and me.
Wednesday's ink writing was already bleeding through the paper. Enid took it without hesitation, while I was just confused. Why were they going to the Nightshades Library? Why did Enid know where it was? What book did Wednesday want after my answer?
"Sure! Any other books to pick up?" Enid said, immediately cheerful as always. She hopped up, fixed her blazer, vest, hair, and shoes, and offered Thing to come with them. Thing did, once he knew Wednesday wouldn't need him, and Enid nearly dragged me along.
"Not at the moment, but show Eugene the book cover and the way into the library. I'm unable to walk away from my novel at the moment but wish to burn this string before it gets tangled," Wednesday answered, typing on her typewriter again.
Enid nodded skipped out of the room happily. As I had to scramble to follow her, hopping while trying to get my shoe on as Enid skipped down the hall. I had to follow her and try to avoid getting caught in the girls' dorm, breathing a sigh of relief once we were in the library.
Third person POV
He followed until we got to the old Edgar Allan Poe statue with his raven and book. Eugene blinked, confused, about to voice his question when Enid snapped twice. Eugene watched the statue slide and stairs lead down.
"How long has this been here??" Eugene said, confused. He had hidden here all the time from bullies or kids picking on him. He used to hide behind Edgar Allan Poe's legs because he was small enough to, before his growth spurt last year, but he never knew it moved before.
"I don't know, it's been here for a while, is my guess. Anywho, come along!" Enid said, ignoring his shock and skipping down the staircase.
Eugene stared around as they walked down and landed on the floor. Dust floated around as he looked all over the beautiful circular room with bookshelves everywhere and paintings lining the walls. He briefly glimpsed faces he recognized, like Wednesday's parents and even his mom. Apparently, she was a Nightshade and was in the same hall as Morticia back then—that was cool to him.
Enid looked around and pulled out her phone, scrolling through it quickly before looking at a photo and matching it to a bookcase. She looked through the spines as Eugene looked around, liking the design of the room and able to feel the little spiders buzzing at his power. Enid pulled a book from the shelves, disrupting a cobweb. She read the spine and snickered, drawing Eugene's attention away and peaking his curiosity. Why did Enid seem so smiley and smug?
"What's up? What's so funny? Did you find the book? What is it?" Eugene asked, stepping forward, trying to peek at the book title. He was only able to see the word "Spark," making Eugene look even more confused as Enid put it into her satchel instead, smiling like she knew something he didn't.
"Nothing, just something funny I realized. Wednesday might be onto something," Enid said, smiling as she started walking toward the stairs.
Eugene blinked, confused. Was this an inside joke?
