Work Text:
Merchant
"Six hundred."
"Excuse me?" Haley balks. "I must have heard you wrong. I thought you just tried to tell me a coffee bean costs six hundred gold. You meant sixty, right?"
"You heard me correctly. Six. Hundred."
"You can't be serious. I only have two hundred!" Haley whines. "I need this. It's for a gift. Help a girl out, please?"
"A shame." The merchant smirks. "Better luck next time."
One month of penny-pinching. Four photoshoot sessions pushed on friends and family. Two events at half her normal rate.
Haley returns, six hundred gold in hand.
"That's one thousand gold, now."
Artist
Haley sees red. Unwilling to beg for a ride, this merchant is her only option. This plan will come to fruition.
She spies paintings adorning the cart's interior. One familiar creature featured in all.
"A trade?" She points to her camera bag. "Six hundred gold and an artistic portrait of the pig."
"You are the pig," the merchant scoffs. "He is companion. He has a name. Esteban."
"I'll make Esteban look like royalty."
One hour to set up the display. One hour to get the pig in place. One hour to process the film. One precious coffee bean in hand.
Manager
"Are you sure you'll be okay?"
"Yes, Doctor Harvey. I know how to manage the phone."
"The schedule is clear?"
"For the third time, Doctor, yes."
"I could stay, in case an emergency comes up. In case George is ill again."
"It's your birthday, Harvey. Haley is waiting. Get out of here."
"Miss Jackson, I don't appreciate the tone. And I need to be here if-"
"Gooo," Maru groaned, pushing him toward the door. "You're allowed to have an afternoon off. You're allowed to enjoy yourself. The town will be here tomorrow. She might not, if you stand her up."
Farmer
Delicate hands planted seed, smoothed over dirt.
Checked daily for moisture.
Photographed growth.
A sprout, a shriek for her sister.
Tall leafing vines, a satisfied smile.
Dozens of beans, a job well done.
First batch a disaster. Burnt and shriveled.
Second batch, light, but acceptable.
Several more batches, nearing perfection.
One pound of roasted beans, bagged.
One decorative label, printed and stuck perfectly in place.
One green bow taped to the top.
'Harvey's Morning Delight' by Haley Watkins.
Ingredients: Coffee beans and love. Just add water
Haley swallowed beneath a nervous blush.
Tears in his eyes, Harvey hugged her tight.
