Work Text:

Hawks hated doing patrols. He hated long nights where he was away from home longer. Hated when he had to be a double agent and didn’t get time to get back home for dinner. The hero’s hollow bones ached and felt sore as he rolled his shoulders and stretched from side to side. He kicked open the door to his apartment, closing it tight behind him before sitting on a bench near the door. A long sigh left his mouth as he finally let his body relax from all the work and pain that had filled his body. His eyes closed letting the weight of his body become heavy. Tight gloves began to disappear form him hands freeing the talons that were trapped inside. He clenched and unclenched his has getting feeling back in them trying to get the pain to subside. Shoes and jacket were discarded but before he could get comfortable his wings shifted causing him to perk up with excitement.

Little steps could be heard coming down the hall. They moved in small rhythmic motions before speeding. A blur of black feathers tackled the hero as chirps and Coos followed. “Hello little bird, how was your day?” Hawks asked, lifting a small Tokoyami into the air. A shadow came flying around his should nuzzling into his cheeks causing him the laugh “And hello to you too Dark Shadow.”

Tokoyami coed in happiness, the Toddler beyond happy to have Hawks back home. After a painful encounter with a villain whose quirk ended up with some nasty side effects leaving his fledgling turned into a toddler the little bird has been in Hawks’ care. Because of this Hawks has been secretly caring for him and honestly he couldn’t be happier. Having a son as cute as Tokoyami was Hawks Biggest dream. The two started to gain a routine. His once daily life was now complemented by a little one and it was great.

“Have you two eaten dinner yet”

“No?” Tokoyami asked, causing Keigo to laugh.

“WAITED FOR YOU!!!!” Dark shadow shouted be for babbling nonsense about the day they had causing Tokoyami to fall apart in a fit of giggles

“Come on tail feathers, let's get you taken care of.”

Just like that the three moved about their routine. Keigo cooked, well he burnt the Mac and Cheese but the small toddler didn’t seem to be the wiser let alone to care. Evening soon turned to night and it was time for a bath which was always a struggle for the hero. He argued with his three year old, losing each battle almost like a pro. His hair stuck up on his head and puffed out his feathers while he chased the naked toddler around the room.

“Come on little tail feathers I gotta finish getting you ready for bed” hawks yelled to his three year old as the boy rounded the corner giggling. Dark shadow yelled at the top of their lungs singing ‘E I E I O’ while Tokoyami quaked like a duck to add to their now remix of Old Mc Donald.

“I ahhhh I ahh. I want snack.” He said looking at Keigo with big round eyes and an open mouth.

“Chickie, we just had dinner, are you still hungry?”

“Yeah!”

“Alright alright. Let me give you a bath first and then we can have a bed time snack.” Hawks said, sitting on the floor hoping for a compromise. Tokoyami thought about it but before a choice could be made Keigo’s wings started to shift. Someone was here. On the balcony at least. His heart rate spiked as he felt a heart rate at the balcony. He looked down at his son before internally cursing. He couldn’t stay there but whoever was outside and Keigo could make a pretty good guess, couldn’t hang outside. Anyone could and would see him. “Toko, go into Kassan’s closet. And wait until I come to get you okay?” He told him in a low whisper.

“Is it bad people?” He asked, knowing this routine too well. He wouldn’t be his best kept secret if they didn’t have a plan. Like hell was Hawks gonna let the commission find out about this. He gave a nod as the fledgling took off to the bedroom leaving hawks to move to the balcony. His feathers tensed at the idea of Dabi on the roof balcony. The two Men have started having an interesting relationship.

Ever since going undercover as a spy for the commission Hawks has spent a lot of time with Dabi. Every moment together has changed Hawks a lot. Maybe for the better. He was starting to question what he wanted. Dabi was slowly chipping away at the persona his handler and finding the bird that was underneath. And as for Keigo? He was starting to think there was more to life than the orders inscribed into his head. Things started to change, and he wasn't sure when he started to align himself more with the league but he was sure it had something to do with the black bundle of feathers he was trying to keep hidden.

Hawks moves toward the balcony internally trying to calm himself hoping this could be over quickly. He turned before opening the door, taking in the sight of his apartment. The once minimalist space filled with nothing but a bed for Hawks to sleep was now covered in toys and mess. Art work that Toko did was hung up everywhere there was space. Hawks refused to let his gifts go to waste. Toys from today’s endeavors scattered the floor, a problem that was usually left to be cleaned after the little bird was asleep. Books were piled on the couch waiting to be read before Bed time. Keigo considered talking with Rumi about helping him find another Nanny for when he was out but he shook that thought away. At least the current one was gone 3mins before he got home to keep his identity safe and she was an Ex Teacher so Toko’s studies weren’t falling behind. Hawks wasn’t sure how long this would last but he sure as hell wasn’t going to slack in the time given to him. Turning back to the door he took a deep breath before moving closer. As he opened the door he was met with a pretty tattered sight. The man looked awful. Drenched in water from the rain. The smell of blood is heavy in the air. Keigo cringed at the thought.

“What happened to you ?” He asked trying to calm his tense wings while keeping them big enough to shield the view of his now slightly busy and not even close to being child proof apartment.

“It doesn't matter bird brain, I need a place to crash.” Dabi growled smoke steaming off of him. So it was bad. The dark haired man let his eyes glide over the Hero’s appearance. He’s never seen him this disheveled before. Blond hair a mess, And what looked like burnt pasta stuck to some of the ends. Feathers slightly out of place and fluffed up like he was distressed or maybe distracted. Dabi debated on making a comment but decided against it when he felt a sharp pain at his side from a particularly shallow breath.

“Sorry Hot stuff I don’t have room.” He said before moving just slightly to block the door. Dabi’s eyes darkened, irritated at most, debating whether to burn him at best.

“This isn’t a joke, Hawks.” Dabi growled clearly annoyed with the results of the day

“I wasn’t joking Dabs. I can’t have you tonight I’m sorry-“ before Hawks could even finish his sentence a loud crash was heard from inside. A distressed chrip rushed out of the birds mouth as he rushed inside. Soon a loud Wail came from his room and the hero picked of the pace. He didn’t even notice Dabi entering behind him slamming the balcony door shut and following a frenzy of stressed red wings to his bedroom.

When entering his bedroom the first thing Hawks noticed was the box of extra nesting blankets on the floor. The next thing he noticed was a very upset dark shadow crying while Toko held their hands, tears in his eyes. A broken chirp left the hero’s mouth as he fell to the ground pulling the two in his lap. “Baby bird what happened, are you okay?” Hawks asked, looking over the toddler and peppering kisses anywhere he could reach.

“The box fell and scared dark shadow. I’m okay. But I think it scared them. And then they got upset for making noise when we were supposed to hide.”

“I SORRY DADA DIDN'T LISTEN WELL. I'M SORRY!” Dark shadow yelled over Tokoyami who was trying to explain. Hawks quickly shushed the two, rocking them gently to help calm them.

“Don’t worry about the tail feathers. Dada isn’t mad. You did so well. My smart babies I’m so proud of you” Hawks reassured, kissing their heads. He calmed the toddler down, rocking his body back and forth.

“Since when did you have a child?” Dabi grumbled looking at the kid in Hawks arms, “And why is he naked?” He questioned taking in the still naked toddler that was very much protesting the bath just a bit ago. Tokoyami Skwaked in surprise at the intruder jumping and running to hide in the piles of blankets causing Hawks to sigh.

“It’s a lot longer of a story than I would like to admit. But this is also why you can’t stay. Listen Dabi, As much as i would love to have you here i can’t right now im not taking the risk.” Hawks said dropping the usual playboy act. He looked exhausted standing to meet Dabi’s eyes. As much as Hawks loved taking care of Toko it was also clear that it was weighing on him and maybe he was a little too in over his head.

“Yeah cause you are doing such a good job with a kid.” The fire quirk user scoffed causing him to wince in pain. That small movement was all it took for the smell of blood to get worse within the room and a blur of black feather to move closer to the fire user.

“ARE YOU HURT BAD?” Dark shadow yelled in the man's face causing him to wince and hawks to pull the toddler closer. Dabi looked at the kid, his grim look faltering a little. Toko peaked out from behind Hawks legs with concern written on his face.
“I’m fine little one. Are you giving this hero here a hard time?”

“He’s not a hero, this is just Dada! We were playing before you got here” Toko said with a smile as he looked up at Hawks with a look of awe. It was clear that he loved Hawks a lot. Loved spending time with him, playing with him, and even more just learning from him.

“Is that why you are naked?” Dabi asked amused written all over his face

“DADA WAS TRYING TO TORCHER US AND DROWN US IN SOAP AND BUBBLES ITS TRUE!!!” Dark shadow shouted out, never really knowing when to use their inside voice. Or maybe they just refused to even try. Hawks shook his head clearly asperated.

“I'm not gonna torture you tail feathers, it's bath time. Besides you love taking baths you can even use the new bath toys we got.” Hawks tried to bargain but it was clear dark shadow was against it. For being attached to each other Tokoyami and Dark shadow always had conflicting opinions on everything. THat was always the hardest thing for Hawks to work around trying to cater to two toddlers instead of one most times than not.

Dabi laughed at the display. His brows pinched as the pain at his side became more prominent but he chose to ignore it so as to not scare the toddler. “I have an idea for you. How about I show you a cool little trick but you have to get in the bath and listen to be able to see it?” At the proposition of a trick Tokoyami squealed, taking off with dark shadow for the bath. “ And you have to let me stay if you want this to go smoothly.” Dabi said, cornering the Hero.

“Fine, sure whatever. I just need to get baby bird to bed, do whatever you want.” Hawks grumbled clearly annoyed with Dabi trying to sluk past him. Dabi blocked his way a finger trying the winged mans chin forcing him too look at the villain.

“Don't be like that, I'm great with kids.” Dabi spoke lips a little too close to Hawks face. The winged hero could feel his heart stutter from the proximity. The tips of his ear turned red. Here he was society's most wanted bachelor blushing like a school girl over a man who was more staples than he was Skin. But those staples always caught his eyes and always made something in his bird brain want to swoon with want’ The fact that he was offering to help take care of his chick wasn’t helping those thoughts in the slightest. The fire user on the other hand just couldnt take his eyes off of how domestic Hawks looked with the kid. How he wanted to ruin that. How he wanted to be apart of that. Before the two could get caught up in their thought a loud swauck was heard.

“TOO COLD TOO COLD> NO LIKE NO LIKE DADA DADA”

Hawks sighed, ducking away from Dabi and heading to the bathroom, the villain hot on his trail. For what it was worth, the sight coming into the bathroom could have been worse. The bath water that hawks had started earlier had long since gotten cold and judging by the water that now was all over the floor neither of the toddlers enjoyed that. Dabi chucked before moving closer. He leaned over the tub rolling his sleeves up just a little to reach in the bath tub and pull the plug. He let the water drain just a little bit before stopping. He turned the faucet to fill the tub not adding much warmer water but more so to get bubbles to start going.

“Still cold” Toko pouted even as he tried to catch the bubble in the water.

“Now for the trick.” Dabi said. With wide eyes Tokoyami and Dark shadow watched as dabi lit both his hands and a bright blue fire danced upon them. Dabi let the fire light the room in a beautiful blue, flooding out the warm lighting of the lights. The heat that radiated off the flames made the toddlers hum in delight before they watched the flame die down and then to the surprise of all the birds in the room, dabi shoved both hands into the water heating the water to a temperature perfect for the toddlers.

Crips and coos of delight left the toddler's mouth as Dabi continued to play with them. Dabi was handed a variety of toys being begged with big eyes to play some more and for once the villain couldn;t find it in his heart to refuse. He played with the toddler as HAwks bathed the boy plucking and bushing his feathers till they shined. The moment the bath was over Tokoyami was begging and clinging for Dabi to stay. Demanding him to read a story and to join him for a sleepover.

“You don’t have to give into his demands, you know. Toko and Dark shadow are both a little spoiled. Probably my own doing. THey wont be upset if you say know tho. It's almost past bed time and I know they will pass out the moment their heads hit the pillow.” Hawks said as a very excited toddler pulled Dabi toward the kitchen with the promise of snacks.

“Dada bought me and shadow cookies!!!!!! I share my cookies with you and then we can have a sleepover. Come on!” Tokoyami exclaimed, pulling on dabi’s arm causing him to wince. At the notice of pain and the smell of blood the smaller boy dropped his arm immediately alarmed and worried. “Dada, Friend is hurt.” He whined looking at his father with teary eyes

“ Toko how about you go grab a cookie and get in bed. I will help our friend real quick and join you okay?” The winged hero asked before and small tokoyami nodded and hurried off. Not without giving Dabi a very gentle hug goodbye. “Alright tell me what happened.”

“Just got caught up with some work…fuck i forgot i was in pain dealing with the little bird until now. It’s nothing too big, you were just the closest place to heal.” Dabi grumbled, sinking to the floor and shrugging off his jacket. A stab wound, not too deep but still all too painful could be seen just below his ribs. Hawks left the room before returning with a First aid kit. The hero began to clean Dabi up before looking to meet his eyes.

“Thanks for helping. I clearly needed this. As happy as i am doing this alone is…. Well its alot so thank you.”

Dabi scoffed before pulling the hero in for a kiss. A surprised chirp leaves hawks’ mouth as they kiss, causing Dabi to laugh, keeping the man’s body close to him. “I have been wanting to do that for a while” He grumbled as their foreheads met and hot air was exchanged between the two of them. Hawks melted into Dabi’s touch causing the villain to laugh. “Thanks for patching me up Pretty bird. Now come on, I need to sleep this off and I was promised a sleepover.

As the night stilled the Two found themselves tangled in bed with a small toddler snoring in between them. They snuggled up in the nest soft whispers of secrets being swapped and a new found hope blooming on both. As hawks began to doze her heard a gruff laugh. “Told you I was good with kids, pretty bird.” Dabi spoke before the world faded into darkness.
