Work Text:
On the corner of the street, Three walked into the small store. She was hoping to find something cheap enough she could buy for One. It was the least he could do for them! Scouting around the store, Three found.. absolutely nothing worth buying. When it was something nice, it was out of budget. Even though Three had two dollars to work with, nothing caught their eye.. back to the house.
Before walking far, a small object caught Three's eye. It was two quarters and a dollar. Yes, that's all I needed! Quickly snatching the money up, Three ran back into the store and tried to find the gift he saw earlier. Within a minute, they found it again. It was a small necklace with blue and red beads with space charms all over it. It was perfect for One! Three grabbed the necklace and walked to the register. She quickly paid and left. They bolted down the street at an alarming speed. One's gonna love this!
In the apartment, One sat on the bed, staring at the wall. They were thinking again, like they always did after a long day. She wondered what Three really thought about her. They'd been dating for a while now, but she just wondered; did Three really still care? Sure, Three was kind and caring and really everything One could ever need.. of course they cared! Or was it an act? Just like the others.
"Hey One!" Three's voice cut through One's irrational thoughts like a knife, knocking them right out of their daze.
"Hey, Three!" One said eagerly, scrambling off the bed and right into Three's arms. She felt the texture of beads being lifted onto her hair and neck. "What's this?"
"A necklace! I bought it for you!" Three chirped, hugging One tightly.
"What? I could've sworn you only had two dollars, and this necklace was $3.50 last time I checked.." One muttered, somewhat confused.
"I found some extra money on the ground!" Three said with delight.
"You used that - your last bit of money - to buy me a gift?" One couldn't believe it. Someone actually got her something even when they were running low on money. It felt unreal. Three cared. He actually cared.
"Yeah, what's so surprising?" Three asked One, not exactly understanding why One sounded so shocked.
"Sorry, nothing is wrong with what you did." One apologized.
"Don't apologize, you look great in that necklace!" Three said, changing the subject quickly.
"Thanks.. you always look nice." One said quietly, a little flustered from the compliment; she didn't get compliments frequently.
"Hehe, thanks, One!" Three responded, lightly ruffling One's hair. If she had a wish, it'd be to stay like this forever.
It appears money might not buy happiness, but it can contribute to it greatly!
