Work Text:

This was different from the last time.

In the last timeline, when Lu Guang, Cheng Xiaoshi, and Xia Fei were being chased by the thugs from the pub, they’d taken the road on the right and escaped.

This time around, the right road had been blocked off.

This time around, Lu Guang had been shot.

He could feel the blood soaking his shirt, could feel it gushing out of the gaping hole in his abdomen, staining Cheng Xiaoshi’s own shirt as he carried him down the road to the left.

He idly wondered if Cheng Xiaoshi would receive his power when he died.

“Jus’ leave me,” he muttered. “Slowing… you down…”

“No way!” Cheng Xiaoshi, predictably, exploded. “Just hold on. We’ll get you some help!”

Lu Guang almost believed Cheng Xiaoshi’s words.

Until a brick wall loomed before them, cutting off all exits.

Cheng Xiaoshi and Xia Fei whirled around to face the thugs slowly advancing on them.

Maybe Lu Guang had broken time too much by coming back to the past. Maybe that’s why things were so different this time.

Maybe that’s why he was about to die.

But then, there was a commotion as a figure stepped in front of the trio, a blurry figure making short work of the sports fans.

He turned around. “You boys alright?”

Lu Guang’s eyebrows twitched together slightly. He knew that voice. How did he know that voice?

The figure drew closer, leaning forward as he inspected the gunshot wound. “He’s lost a lot of blood, but I can help him.” He clicked his tongue. “It looks like the bullet only grazed him, but even with the smallest cuts, you can still lose so much blood.”

And Lu Guang felt the rest of the blood in his body turn to ice water as he finally recognized the man who had rescued them.

Vein offered him a smile, one that was sharp and showing off too many teeth. “You’re safe now.”

But even as Lu Guang felt unconsciousness claim him, he couldn’t help clutching onto Cheng Xiaoshi’s shirt, trying to warn him.

Until numbness enveloped him and he fell unconscious.
