Chapter Text
It was the dawn of a new school day, school year. Muu was the center of attention as usual, and all her classmates were just fodder and her stepping stools for everyday.
It was easy, living like this. Muu would smile, and everyone would give her the world; Muu would act nice and everyone would worship the ground she walks on; Muu could even give you gifts! And all one had to do was lay their lives for her.
It was natural. It was just how the world worked. Even when others talk bad behind her back, as long as she didn't hear it, as long as she ignored it, as long as they didn't make their voices loud enough— and continue to treat her like the queen that she is, it would be just be the most natural thing in the world. Even if she comes home from school after a long day of listening to gossip and getting her schoolwork done for her— to a silent house filled with working maids and butlers, while her parents work away in some foreign country Muu begged to go to after graduating, it'd be just the way things are.
Today was just going to be another day full of luxuries one wouldn't ever even think of in a lifetime, but something Muu had everyday. It was just going to be ordinary, but—
Classmate A piped up, "Muu-san!! Did you hear? A new student is coming along today."
Classmate B pulled up next to her, "Really?! I wonder what she'll look like?"
Classmate C popped up, "I saw her photo; she's kind of handsome, but plain for a girl."
Muu stopped scrolling on her phone, and tapped her desk with her long manicured nails that was undoubtedly against school rules as she did a little hum. "I wonder~ what she'll be like." She laughs, "I'll probably forget her name in a second."
Her classmates, as obedient as ever, laughed with her. "You're right, Muu-san! No one would compare to your grand introduction!"
Muu laughs and laughs and lets her hair flow freely as her beautiful eyes crinkle; and she knows everyone is entranced by her display; then she lets the ugly nausea deep within her gut die immediately when she felt everyone's eyes on her performance.
"Oh, you guys, my introduction back then was just a little—" As she was about to go on and on about her exciting tales to an audience that has heard the same things over and over again, she paused. Not for long, she quickly immediately went back to her story. But that pause made the fear in the pool of her stomach continue swimming. The transfer student entered. And she noticed. Not just her, but everyone else too. But still, they all went back to listen to Muu.
The transfer student stood there, in the middle of the board, looking over for a seat. She had a blank look on her face. She was exactly like her classmates described; handsome, but plain. Plain in a way that you would describe lilies.
How simple.
She found her seat and sat on it, no one next to her, since the whole class huddled up around Muu as she continued to animatedly tell her story— but not once did her eyes leave the other girl on the other side of the room.
Something stirred within her heart that day.
And, for once, did she not let it go.
She introduced herself, Rei was her name, no one paid much attention. Some were scribbling on their papers, some were gossiping, some yawned and fought of their sleep. Muu, amidst the chairs they sat on, looked forward curiously.
Rei smiled as everyone just ignored her. Muu found it funny and fitting— this intro was really nothing like hers at all— just another same ol' same ol' new student intro, but she didn't let her amusement show. She just continued to observe.
Rei finished introducing herself; then immediately dropped her smile going back to the same face Muu saw earlier— plain. Bored. She didn't seem bothered in the slightest with how no one asked questions, not even the ones next to her talked to her.
That day, it started with a simple question. How long will that unfazed facade of hers last?
That recess, Muu approached her; her worker bees following. "Hii! You must be the new student here! How are you doing?" Muu must seem so nice to you for approaching you like this out of nowhere! How will you thank me? How will you try to get on my good side? Will you be another bore? Will you stutter and be flustered on the fact that a pretty girl is talking to you?! Will you—
"I'm fine." Rei answered.
"Eh?"
"What about you?"
...Oh! She's asking about ME! Muu didn't let her sigh of relief leave her throat. "Muu's doing good as well~ want to join us for lunch?"
"Um... No thanks."
"What?"
"I don't wanna stay in the cafeteria, it's too crowded there." Rei explained, but Muu didn't hear her anymore. She saw red. Blood rushed through her head. An unknown feeling lingered throughout her spine; she felt dizzy, her knees almost gave out, am I going to pass out?
"...Hello?"
"Huh?"
"Are you okay? You've been as still as a board there for a whole minute."
"Is Muu okay? So you're curious about me? You are, aren't you? There's no way you wouldn't be!" Before Rei could answer, Muu swiftly walked away, fighting the urge to cover her ears.
Her classmates debated asking her what was that all about, lest they get met with an angry Muu not often seen, but definitely someone that exists.
"Muu-chan doesn't like that new girl, does she?" Classmate B whispered as they followed behind her.
"I wouldn't either! The way she just rejected her like that..!" Classmate A whispered back with a low tone, but not low enough that Muu couldn't hear.
The blonde quickly turned around— "She didn't reject me!"
Classmate B immediately tried to mediate. "O-Oh! Muu-san, we didn't mean it like that..."
Classmate A and C frantically nod, "yeah!"
Muu's never felt like this before. Just like this, everyone should be agreeing with her, nodding to her, reassuring her, everyday; everyone should be like this. For her.
That anger curled itself around her, it consumed her very being. Rei couldn't get away with this.
She remembered her name. She couldn't not remember it. It etched its way to her very soul.
Ever since, Rei's had no one to talk to. Muu and her lackeys ignored her while laughing, shit talking; meanwhile, the amount of verbal abuse they've said never reached her ears, since nobody was outright with it.
They ignored Rei, and Rei ignored them back.
But Muu— she kept looking.
Everyday, Muu laughs loudly enough for it to be heard on the other side of the room, she flaunts more and more flashy jewelry, she gives bigger and better gifts to her followers, and she makes sure Rei sees it all.
As if to say, you would never have this with your own hands.
So, join with mine.
But Rei never did.
Whenever Muu would ask her something just to make fun of her with her friends, Rei would just answer truthfully.
She wouldn't try to make herself seem impressive, she didn't get mad no one talked to her except for Muu, she still wouldn't get flustered— Rei saw her as just another classmate.
And when that dawn of realization came upon Muu, something in her shattered.
Rei didn't see her as the beautiful queen bee needed to be worshipped. She just saw her as some random beautiful girl. Actually, does she even think I'm beautiful? Well she has to— she just has to! There is no way—
Muu felt her fists clench. Her nails clung hard to her palm. She checks, It left red marks. But— it doesn't hurt.
If Rei saw this, would she be concerned for me? Would she care?
It's been months, and Muu is still on top of the world, and just like always, Rei couldn't care less. While everyone else coddled her, sitting on the floor as Muu gave them the honey nectar they crave, Rei just sat on the other side of the classroom, scribbling. Whatever she's doing, I don't care.
"Muu-chan, where are you looking?"
"Um? Nothing!" Muu replied.
Her classmates whispered amongst themselves again: "Muu-san really must hate the transfer student."
"Yeah, she keeps looking in her direction."
I do not! Muu thought, looking in Rei's direction.
"If this keeps up, Muu-san might just snap. We should be doing something."
"Let's teach her a lesson after school."
Muu froze, but she didn't object. She didn't want to; in fact, she was curious, how is Rei-chan going to take such blatant slander like this, hm?
Just like that, the bullying on Rei began. Muu decisively ignored everything. Every push, every shove, every water shoved on to the other girl. And Muu wouldn't care. Well— care enough to stop it. Sometimes, she watches in a trance, and it'd be over before she knew it. She wonders, how does it feel like, hm? To be disregarded? To have someone ignore your pain and suffering? I bet you feel pathetic. I bet you want to apologize to Muu right now.
But soon later, Muu's triumph slowly dies down as she realized Rei's indifferent reactions. No matter what they pushed towards her way, she faced it head-on and heavy with conviction— but not towards Muu. She looked right past her.
The ugly interest Muu has had in Rei wouldn't die down no matter what. Muu wanted her— she wanted Rei to rot, she wanted her to get mad, she wanted to see her tears flow down— and she wanted to see it with her own eyes. Muu wanted to be the cause of it all. If Muu wasn't happy with her attitude, Rei didn't deserve to be happy either.
Muu burned with desire to see Rei lash out at least once.
And when she did, it didn't serve her well like she thought it would.
In Muu's defense, she never really did anything to Rei except watch. She never even ordered anything for her classmates to do anything. It's not my fault I'm so perfect, after all.
When Rei finally got mad, finally stopped just gritting her teeth and crawling— she stood up for herself. And well— everyone knows how it went, even those outside the scene. Rei rammed Muu with a chair.
Rei couldn't even remember the face of her bullies, but she knew the cause of it all was Muu Kusunoki. She wasn't ever even directly in the scene of the crime, but Rei would look into the reflection on the windows and always see her shadow, always feel her gaze at her. Those eyes— it cursed her. She wanted those eyes to shut down and never wake again. Those bullies never mattered— they were just some pieces of shits that didn't have anything better to do in their life but be stupid mindless slaves obeying their master's will— but this 'master'.
She was the picture of beauty and grace but had a heart of rotting flesh. It was like a veil was constantly draped upon her— elegant, classy, but it was just another way of hiding everything terribly disgusting within her. Rei's felt this discomfort since day one. Muu was just another human, and humans tend to have cover up their flaws.
Muu was just another human. Even when she blushes and giggles over her bruised and battered body, she was just another human being. But even worse— she was a human being enamoured with her... suffering..?
Was it her suffering? Or her in general? That pathetically sappy look on Muu's face directed to Rei's equally pathetic state was just enough for her to snap— and then Muu was bleeding.
That arrogant, little miss perfect queen bee was bleeding, and bleeding, vomiting all over the ground— it was grotesque, disgusting, and in the first time in Rei's life, she looked directly at Muu— Muu's distressed, pale gagging face, and she thought, how beautiful.
But then she quickly snapped out of her trance and looked around if anyone was about to snitch— but just as unsurprisingly, none of her 'loyal' worker bees cared to call the teachers or infirmary. They just gossiped amongst themselves, some even pulled out their phones to start recording. Disgust coiled around her throat, but she spares no extra glance and dashes out of the scene right away.

Chapter Text
It's been a week since the chair incident and there's been silence. On Rei's part, at least.
Nobody's been bullying her.
It's been peaceful on her side.
And her side consists of her, and her alone.
It wasn't only her who was alone now, though.
But she supposed Muu never really had someone by her side in the first place.
I guess that means we've both always been alone this whole time.
You just didn't realize.
How does it feel?
But Rei didn't care enough to ask her in person.
Rei sees Muu splashed with water like she once was, and made sure not to step on the water puddles and ignored her entirely. She knows by doing this, they are now just different sides of the same coin.
But just as consistently, Rei couldn't care enough.
She just wanted a peaceful life, and she finally got it— she wasn't about to let it go. She can go home without having to treat injuries not easily seen, she can stop packing extra clothes with her whenever going to school; and all she had to do was stop caring about the blonde girl sprawled on the floor.
This went on and on and on, and still, Rei would feel Muu's iridescent green eyes on her, as if to say: "this is all your fault."
And maybe it is, but again, Rei doesn't care. There were no adults caring about their situation, so why should she? Muu was supposed to be the only child of some big shots; they supposedly treated her like gold— but no one stopped the bullies, no one got in trouble, just like gold; the situation was malleable.
Maybe Rei should be thankful that nothing's happening; that no one cares enough— but the realization that she and Muu are really one and the same planted itself into her gut.
Just like her, Muu lives in a house where nobody cares for her. She goes to a school where nobody talks to her.
Nowadays, Muu hides in the school bathrooms more often than in the comfort of her own home, like she used to do.
That's all that Rei thought she was doing.
Perhaps she was just unlucky enough to walk in the restrooms that day.
Or maybe it was fate like she always claimed.
When she opened the door, Muu stood in front of the mirrors with rolled up sleeves, hair still wet and dirty from the amount of different things thrown at her— meanwhile, her blood dripped down from both her arms onto the drain in the sink, and she was holding the blade.
Muu's head whipped around to the shuffling at the door; and Rei froze— as the blonde quickly attempts to hide her arms.
The purple-haired girl slowly backed away, and she didn't know why, but her first instinct was to run— but her feet stayed in place.
Muu gripped that utility knife, hard. The blonde's eyes were bloodshot, and habitually, she was staring straight at her. Muu stared with an undeniable aura of despair the other girl had once— where she ended up doing something she didn't regret.
Rei could just leave, like always, but seeing the other girl's wrist made her wonder, wonder and wonder. Should I care?
"Rei."
"Kusunoki..."
"Oh come on, we've been classmates for a while now, call me by my first name. You don't really care for pleasantries like that, right?"
"..."
"No answer? You keep on ignoring me like this, Rei. It hurts." She gets closer. The other doesn't back away, this time.
"Tell me, what did Muu do that was so wrong? What is Muu suffering so much for?"
Rei attempts to speak; but her eyes couldn't stop flitting from the blonde's hand holding the knife and the gaze directed right at her.
"You can't even say anything, huh? Rei? Even if I say I hate you, you wouldn't bat an eye! Hey Rei? Rei. Rei." Her green eyes shook and tears poured down— she sniffles, "I hate you."
The sound of her sobs broke Rei's fixation on the other girl's wrist. "Wh...What?"
"You keep staring at this," Muu pointed at her own arm, "Are you disgusted? Well, look at it all you want!! Look at what you did to me!!" She shoved it in front of the other's face.
Rei couldn't help but crinkle her eyes in judgement and for her face to turn sour. When she blinked, her eyes widened immediately. The cuts couldn't help but resemble... her name?
"Is that..?"
"Is that what?" Muu walks past her to lock the door behind them.
Hearing that clink, Rei turned around. "What did you just do— Why would you—?" as she walked over to the doorknob as well— Muu stepped behind her to wrap her arm around the girl's shoulder, then held the bloodied knife against Rei's throat, making her own blood stain the other's uniform.
"!!! What... are you— get off me!!!"
Her tear stained green eyes dried up and darkened; she says nothing when she hugged her tight with her other hand; and with both of them struggling— Muu accidentally drops her knife, and in her arms, Rei yells "HELP!"
Muu promptly covers her mouth, and drags her inside the comfort room— "Shut it." Rei kept shaking her shoulders back and forth in an attempt to wiggle out of her embrace, and because of their thrashing— they both end up falling to the floor.
Skin on skin, Muu feels the other girl's breathing on her own chest. "...Well, do you remember what it's like? When I laid down here... You just avoided me like I was some house pest."
"Mmmphhh!!!!!" Rei kept on clawing at Muu's hands that were over her mouth and neck.
"Ow, ow!!! Stop that!! Hey, hey!!!" Muu's yelped; but then with a lowered voice she whispered behind her ear, "If you don't stop moving, I'll stab you for real."
Rei's usually drooped eyelids widened alongside the shrinkage of her gray eyes, and pupils— she trembled and trembled; deep within her, Rei tried to calm down her beating heart threatening to escape from her ribcage.
Muu could only see the back of Rei's head thanks to their position on the floor— but she could feel Rei's uneven breathing and shivering on her hand, even her whole body. Rei was scared, more than ever— fearful than she ever saw back then in those empty classrooms. And her heart was beating just as loudly as the girl in front of her. Was it exhilaration? Nervousness? To feel Rei shaking— her sadness, her anger, all directed at her— but without anything to do because Muu's holding a knife against her.
"There, calmed down now~? Won't you listen to me?"
Rei chomped down on the hand covering her mouth.
Muu violently jerked back. "What the—!!!??? Ow!!!" She shakes off the sensation. "Ew!! That really hurts. Are you a dog?"
While Muu was distracted by her hand, Rei used both her hands to take the girl's other arm holding the knife to push it away from her— and to attempt to steal it. "Let go off me!!!"
"You got a few screws lose, huh?" Muu gripped her utility knife like a lifeline, and Rei didn't wanna risk taking it by the blade. The blonde's previously bitten hand goes to snake around the purple-haired girl's waist.
"YOU'RE talking?????" Rei gave up on trying to take the knife— and ended up squeezing Muu's arm— scars and all— to make it stay far from her, while her other arm elbows Muu's face.
"O-Oww!!!! You... keep on trying to hurt Muu..." She whispers behind her ear— "hey, how does it feel?" She asked directly this time, unlike Rei. "You did this to me. Everyday I see you, and I ask myself, how do you keep going on? Without seeing me? You always avoid seeing Muu. Even if I cut myself in the bathroom everyday, no one ever sees Muu. But— that's probably because Muu always locks the door. But it doesn't matter— they don't matter. Muu wanted you to see, how much Muu suffers everyday. And the one time Muu forgot to lock the door— you stepped in." She didn't know, but her face was as red as her blade. "It must be fate. You looked right at me. I'm glad you finally did. Do you feel sorry for Muu?"
She giggled right behind her ear, and Rei felt the chill in her spine crawl. She heard everything clearly, but her head was spinning— and her shuddering wouldn't stop. Her heart kept on palpitating, and it wouldn't stop. "Y-You're insane. You're insane!!!" The grip of her hand became unsteady so Muu quickly tore right through— and put her utility knife against Rei's throat again.
"You're so~ noisy. What if we get caught?" Her legs slowly curled around Rei's, entwining it together so she could hold her in place.
Rei felt weakened and heavy— especially her legs; and while she continues to elbow Muu in the face, her other— still— trembling hand that got knocked back, raised up again; and she saw her own reflection looking back on the cutter against her. "... What do you want from me?"
"Can't you lower your elbow? It's blocking me."
"Lower your knife first."
"Your hand's holding me in place~ did you forget? You know, if your grip gets any tighter, I'll never be able to get rid of the marks!!!"
Rei, lowered it herself, along with her elbow, and using both her hands— in a quick pace—she held Muu's arm down. "Speak. I'll hear you out, but not with a knife to my face.
"O-Ouch!!! Don't hold me so tightly!!!"
Cold sweat dripped down Rei's forehead, alongside or because of the feeling of Muu's blood dripping down from her open cuts. She loosened her grip.
"Ugh, that's... I suppose. Well, now, are you finally willing to listen? That makes me really happy, Rei~" Muu laughed at first, but as she tries speaking— "Rei... You..."— she ends up having to swallow the urge to throw up. "... You... have to help me. Everyday, everyone is out to get me. The teachers don't give a shit, neither do my workers at home... they won't contact mommy and daddy...!" Her tears that stopped earlier came crashing down again, "I hate it... I hate it. I hate it! Everyone keeps ignoring me!! Especially you! This is all your fault!!!!"
"How was it all my fault? You know, I'm only telling you this because I'm being threatened here— otherwise I would leave you to figure it out for yourself— but, news flash, no one ever liked you. You say I led those girls into tormenting you? Heck, all I did was hit you with a chair. It was their nasty idea to start bullying you instead— I never told them to."
"I never told them to bully you either!!!! But still— you ended up blaming me! You bitch! What did I do to you, huh? You won't even take responsibility! You won't help me! Everyday you passed by me like I was some stupid bug! W...Why?!" Muu, in a fit of anger, yanked her hand holding the box cutter back.
Rei, who expected this, chased the knife, meanwhile her legs flailed around in an attempt to break free. "Gggh— ugh— you— I already explained— and by the way, suddenly attacking me doesn't really help enforce your point!—" Using her knee, she bends it to try and knock off the knife from the blonde's hand, but carefully enough so Muu doesn't end up cutting her. "Nobody gives a fuck about you! That's why they didn't need your permission to bully me, and that's why they're bullying you right now!" Rei then decided to swiftly grab Muu's two hands that held a knife and her waist, then laid down to roll around and switch their positions.
Rei held Muu down on the floor using her wrists with all her strength— as the blonde squirmed below her. "Augh!! What?!— But that's... That's impossible! Muu gave them lavish gifts, Muu was super nice to them! Muu doesn't get it!! Muu is... super lovely, and pretty, and kind... so... why did this happen?... Why don't you care about me, Rei? Why doesn't anyone care about Muu? It hurts... get off me... please...!!" Her tears freely flowed down in front of Rei.
She didn't know whether those tears were genuine or not at this point; but as she heard the sniffles of the blonde, an unknown feeling swirled around her cold, pounding heart. "You lack self awareness."
One last tear stained her face. Muu, with her unusually large doe eyes, stared at Rei who was atop her. "You think I do?"
Rei felt that this was a trap; but she answered anyway. "... I do."
"You've always been honest like this, huh, Rei?"
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"I don't get why you're so mean to me. But— maybe Muu does..?"
"What??"
With her arms unavailable— she used her knees to sock Rei in the stomach. "I know—" She laughs, manic, "I'm acting like a crazy bitch right now."
She ends up letting her go from the impact— "A-Augh!" Rei coughed, on her knees; and then Muu tackles her.
Rei hits the floor, with Muu now above her. "But I don't get why Muu acting like this is so wrong. Rei— you ruined Muu's life. My whole life— got destroyed, thanks to you. Muu sees all their faces in my dreams but not one of them is ever as clear as yours. The way you looked at Muu in contempt, or the way your gray eyes merely gave a glance on Muu's wretched body, your actions that day— your eyes, your name, your flesh— made its way into my heart. I... can keep carving your name into my skin, but it'll never get rid my memories of you."
Rei, in her muddlehead state, blurts out— "... You're insane."
"Is that all you can say? Muu is so tired of it. Will you ever give Muu a cure?" She sits on top of her.
"You're sick in the head. I can't cure that."
"You made me like this." Muu plunged her knife before Rei.
A dull ache on Rei's shoulder throbbed. "What... What did you just do...?" She felt her vision spinning, "You..."
"Oh, damn, my knife's stuck. I was aiming for your neck."
"Did you just fucking stab me?!"
Muu put a finger on top of her lips. "...Shut your mouth."
"What— What the hell— the actual fuck—" Rei felt more blood flow down from her shoulder, not knowing anymore if it was from Muu's or herself. The amount of red and its overwhelming smell made her nauseous, bile rising in her throat.
"Between us, who's more like the perpetrator? The girl who's currently getting bullied with cuts all over her arm, or the loser who started the hate train on me?"
"Maybe the one with the fucking stab wound..."
"Yeah, right! It's not my fault, okay? You just can't bother to understand me! Muu tried to make you! But you left Muu with no choice!!!"
Rei felt her consciousness dip in and out, and made the decision to face the stab face on. She saw the utility knife buried in her shoulder, unleasing a blood fall all over her already bloody clothes from Muu's arm.
Daaamnnn...... Is this.... how I die? Mother... Father... Well, I don't really think they ever cared anyway... I'm pretty sure they had an inkling I was getting bullied but they never bothered to ask... It'd be too late by now, anyway. Am I about to die..?
"Hey, Kusunoki... No, Muu..."
Muu would never admit it, but the name call made her heart pound— she would never admit it, but her face was once again was as red as her attempt. "R-Rei! You're still talking! D-Does it hurt? Are you about to die..????? Um... Well, serves you right!"
"You're gonna get charged with murder."
"...Eh? But I'm a minor..."
Rei almost wanted to laugh at that. But it was too painful to. "Ahhh... Well, what the heck. Dying in your arms. Never thought I'd see that happen."
"You're... dying?"
"Aaah— ahh... I don't know.... Am I?"
Muu tried to touch the stab, and her hands immediately got stained with the other's blood. It wouldn't dry up, since Rei kept bleeding out. Their blood was a myriad of scarlet together— making a mess of their clothes, their flesh, and the floor.
Rei fought to stay conscious— to look at the face responsible for her wound. It was arrogance at first, and the blonde was about to triumph— but the unusual silence stretched and made her face slowly distort into a state full of fear. She's never seen Muu this scared, even with the bullies. Rei tried giving a smile, but it ended up as a lopsided grin. "You're... pretty warm."
"You're warm too. Your blood— it's so warm." Muu fixated on the smile before her, the pounding of her chest mixing into an ocean of different reasons. She felt warmth on her hands, face, and the atmosphere. "Warm... Is that what blood feels like? When I cut myself, blood doesn't really feel like anything. It just... stings, I guess? Ugh, the smell of iron is making me sick."
"You... shouldn't do... that... anymore."
"Do what? You mean my self harm?"
"Nobody cared. So you should stop."
"No one knows about it. Well, except for you. You're the only heartless one who doesn't care."
Rei looked at Muu straight in the eyes. "How are you so sure?"
"H-Huh..?"
"....Why did you ask me out all of people for help?"
"Ask you out?! I didn't— oh..! Uh— um... I mean, who else would? You're the only one in this school who... I don't know... It's just, you're the cause..! Take some responsibility..."
"I think I've taken enough. Take me to the nurse... I don't... wanna die... right now."
"What if I don't want to?! What's in it for me?! Once— once you're recovered, you'll snitch!!! Blame it all on me again!! But you did this to yourself..! I— I..."
"..."
"....."
"Hey, Rei. Rei?" The blood kept on going, and Muu was there to witness it all like she had once wished but— "Aaah— Ahh? Ah? Rei? Rei?! Rei?! Why aren't you answering anymore!? Rei!!!! No, no, no!!! Don't— don't leave me!"
"I thought you wanted me to." The grin on her face was ever so present along side her blood, sweat, and everything else, before she finally stopped to close her eyes.
...
