Work Text:

Jake Peralta knew about soulmates, it was something that everyone knew.

A soulmate was a person who an individual was destined to one day meet and spend the rest of their lives with. A soulmate was an individual’s ideal romantic partner.

A person learned the identity of their soulmate by the soulmate’s name appearing like a tattoo on their skin. This could happen at any time in a person’s life after both soulmates had turned the age of eighteen years old.

At the age of twenty-seven years old Jake still had never met his soulmate before, though he wanted to, he wanted to meet that one special person who was supposed to be perfect for him. He wanted to know who they were, he wanted to know what they looked like and he wanted to know everything about them. He yearned to meet them, whoever they were, and until that day arrived he would work on his career.

One day, only a few weeks after his twenty eighth birthday Jake was having lunch with his friend Charles Boyle when suddenly he felt an almost burning sensation upon the skin of his wrist.

“Ow!” said Jake, the sudden pain almost causing him to drop the burger he was eating.

Boyle looked at Jake with surprise, “What’s wrong Jake?” he asked.

Jake frowned, he put down his burger for now, pushed back his sleeve a bit and examined his wrist.

On the skin of his wrist was something that hadn’t been there before, a tattoo looking mark that was in the form of words, the words spelt the name Harry Potter.

Jake stared at the words, shock, excitement, and happiness filling him, a happy smile soon appearing across his face.

He had finally received the name of his soulmate.

“Noice! Hey Charles! Charles I just got my soulmate tattoo!” said Jake, grinning.

“That’s great! Can I see it?”

“Sure!” Jake answered before showing his friend and co-worker his soulmate mark that was now no longer causing him any pain.

“That’s great Jake! Are you going to meet this Harry Potter?” Boyle asked.

“Course I am, just need to find him first,” said Jake.

After lunch Jake went back to his computer and started to search for any information about his soulmate that he could find.

When he went home that day he felt disappointed, he spent so much time on searching the net for any info about his soulmate but so far had not found out much.

A few weeks later Jake had a case, there had been a break in at a local coffee shop and Jake, along with Amy Santiago, was going to question a witness.

“So how has the search for your soulmate been going so far Jake? Any luck?” asked Amy as they drove to the café.

“Nothing yet to narrow it down or where I might be able to find him,” said Jake.

“That’s too bad, but you just got it not long ago, right? So, I wouldn’t worry too much about it yet” said Amy with a smile.

“Thanks” said Jake but despite Amy’s words Jake still felt annoyed that so far he had to yet discover any information at all about his soulmate.

They parked the police car and walked into the coffee shop, heading straight for the witness.

The witness was a man in his late twenties, he was of average height and of a slender but fit build. He had short, black messy hair and wore black glasses. When Jake approached closer to this man, he saw that the man also had pretty eyes of emerald green and had a lightning bolt shaped scar upon his forehead.

For some reason Jake felt there was something special about this witness, though he didn’t know what it was exactly. All he knew right now was that there was something deep down in him that was telling him that he needed to introduce himself to this man, not just for work but because he felt he needed to spend the rest of his life with him.

It was weird, especially when he had never met this man before, he didn’t even know what the other’s man name was. He just knew that he and this other man were supposed to be together.

Jake continued to stare at the man, unable to tear his eyes away from him, soon he nervously approached him and a hopeful feeling filled him up when he saw that the nametag pinned to the man’s barista uniform read Harry Potter.

Before he even opened his mouth Jake had every intention of questioning the witness about this break in that had occurred, afterall that was why Santiago and himself were here. However now that he had a strong suspicion that the man in front of him might be his soulmate he instead just said, “I think you might be my soulmate! Show me your mark please!”

The witness looked confused for a moment, while Santiago looked surprised.

“Jake! We’re here on duty!” said Santiago with disapproval.

“Um…sure, I don’t mind Detective Peralta. You do seem kind of special to me for some reason and I actually did receive a soulmate tattoo of your name recently” Harry said , not seeming to mind Jake’s outburst.

“Noice!” said Jake, grinning happily. “I’ll show you mine if you show me yours”

The other man nodded and soon showed Jake a wrist that had Jake’s name tattooed upon the skin. Jake did the same for Harry, a big smile on his face as he showed his own soulmate tattoo to the witness.

Jake felt excited and happy to see his own name on the other man’s wrist, he felt even happier as he saw both soulmate marks slowly disappearing right in front of them.

“Um…So I guess that means we’re soulmates. I’m pretty sure it’s just supposed to disappear if the soulmates meet so…”

“Yeah! I think we are!” said Jake.

“So, do you want to go on a date sometime then? We could get to know each other and see if we want to give a relationship together a try” Harry asked.

“Sounds great!”

“Great!” said Harry, smiling happily.

The pair then exchanged phone numbers before Jake questioned his soulmate about the coffee shop break in like he was originally supposed to do before he had gotten distracted.

The following weekend the two men met up at a local restaurant for their first date together during which they got to know each other and at the end of the date both men decided to continue dating.
