Comment on Weirdo's Traintober 2025 Collection

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Huskisson's the first death in railway history? At least, the first who was hit by a locomotive? Great story as always, by the way!

    1. Ok, so this is very interesting! Huskisson was not the first death in railway history, let alone the first person hit by a locomotive - the first to be hit was either a boy named Jeff Bruce (in 1813) or a man named David Brook (in 1821) who was run down by a very early train, while a boiler explosion in 1815 in Philadelphia (UK) killed 13-16 people for the first known railway deaths (apart from Jeff Bruce). Huskisson wasn't even the first to lose his life on the L&M! An unknown man was killed in 1829 during construction, in virtually the same way as Huskisson.

Huskisson was an MP though, and thus his death was heavily publicised, leading to the modern belief that he was the first fatality.

      Thank you for your comment!

        1. No problem! I'm a history nerd first and foremost, so getting to yammer on about it is fun!
