Thats a great thought, also! I feel like Ares hadn't grown conscious enough to be fully all like "what the freak," but also he was definitely frustrated with Julian afterwards. I actually wrote down some of the lines from the movie between Julian and Ares right after that scene, and its actually really interesting to see Ares acting like he's in line by weaponizing Julian's words, "100% expendable.," regarding himself. Ares was already starting to grow bitter and frustrated after being at Encom and Julian nuking their grid while the programs were there. Like actually, that's so brutal what the heck?
Ares had just watched interviews of Eve talking about AI as if it was worth something, and not even two minutes later his own creator bombs them and permanently removes a program Ares had some sort of care for (it seems the programs had a sense of kinship with each other, which makes sense as we see something like that in Tron Legacy). Then immediately after, Ares gets openly mocked by Julian after wondering what happened to Caius.
