Comment on An Unfortunate Suitor

  1. It really is interesting to discuss clothing, isn't it?

It's gone from being something like a class uniform to a "choose-your-own-adventure". I work in an office job, and (because I have spent time in Japan, and it rubbed off on me) I have a collection of ties. Wearing them helps me to get into the right mindset, and I enjoy using them to provide a splash of colour in my day. But very few of my male workmates do.

And I have had a recent health issue that's meant I have lost quite a bit of weight, which has had both pluses and minuses clothing-wise. I still can't fit into some suits I had made overseas almost 15 years ago, so it's time to move on from them. But I really haven't worn them all that much. So is it really worth replacing them?

On the flip side, an American friend has invited me to a Halloween party. It's not my culture, but I will attend in his honour and make an effort. And a local theatre group had a garage sale last weekend. I was looking for potential costumes, but came across something even better - a formal dinner suit that fit perfectly. And it only cost me $15!

What you say about your hubby's colleagues is also fascinating. It sounds as if many people are trying to show that there is more to them than their role. Maybe some of the creatives are trying to be perceived as more professional, while some of those in more traditional roles are trying to show that there is a more colourful side to them.

    1. Ooh I like that theory - that everyone dresses in unexpected clothes, which just happen to be the clothes you WOULD expect, if they weren't in that context.

I wonder what theatre production the suit came from! It's interesting to think you may be wearing something from the Book of Mormon, or My Fair Lady...
