Deacon's chatter and voice were so incredibly perfect, and his stupid one liners made me laugh in several places, even while the horrible shit was going down all around them. Damn that clown. That description of him moving through the ruin of Ticon was lovely, and the way you wrote the not-fight was just perfect. I loved it. Then the fallout after...oh crush my damn heart will you! High Rise! NOOOOO! Ugh, why Bethesda, why? I loved the history implied between HR and Deacon, how they came up together and how HR set up so many safehouses and that they were like brothers.
And I just loved how understanding Nick was of Deacon's many, many f*cking issues, and at every opportunity was allowing him to set the pace of their relationship, even though all Nick wanted to was just like kidnap him from the Railroad and live in domestic bliss, because that's so Nick, isn't it? He wants that home life with the people he loves around him, but all the people he cares for are these crusading psychos that don't know the meaning of home or stability or any of those pesky Old-World concepts. I was so touched by the idea that Nick and Deacon had been friends for such a long time before they moved into a relationship, that they had built such a level of trust and friendship before moving naturally to that next step. God, I am an utter sappy mess over here, what have you done to me?

honestly i still need more practice writing in deacon's voice, mostly bc i'm more accustomed to maccready's, but i'm glad it's alright. deacon's coping mechanism is to laugh on the outside, panic on the inside. also i'm terrible at writing fights tbh lmfsdjdf (no need to crush your heart, pal, rubble already did that to high rise and it's so not worth it)
nick probably and honestly wants the old world back, in some ways. people not trying to kill each other every half second was always a bonus. but this is the world they live in and he's probably long accepted it, and deacon with it, and all that deacon is (tho lbr they're super married in every other sense of the word) ahhh i'm glad you like the background implied slowburn! deacon is probably slow to trust people, what more to begin relationships
