I've set a Challenge for myself that my take on Castus will not be the same in both APMF and B&B. Yeeessss a C H A L L E N G E. With Duro being alive in APMF and still very close with both his brothers Agron and Nasir, of course things would shake out differently, yeah? I just hope writing about him twice won't make him twice as annoying or something. I dunno.
I AM SO GLAD TO BE FANGIRLING NASIR AND AGRON WITH YOU AND THE BEAUTY THAT THEY ARE. I mean, I totally get a sense of "first, last, and only" OTP with them. In the "life partner" sense, at least. Of course we've already talked about what kind of sexual experience Agron may have had (back in the B&B Ch 1 comments) before arriving at the ludus--
But OK AGRON'S ARRIVAL AT THE LUDUS. Like, if people watched that episode, and they saw Agron's reaction when he checked out Segovax's junk... like how was the Kiss That Changed A Nation really a shock? (Or is this a Thing guys do in the locker room? I'd ask my Japanese guy, but I'm pretty sure attitudes are different here. I mean Japan has a culture of public bathing. But then again, so did Rome... so I wonder which perspective would be more accurate. Hm...)
Anyway, it seemed pretty clear to me that Agron knows what his sexual preferences are. That moment in 1x08 plus the fact that he doesn't give any women the time of day... with the exception of Aurelia (whose death really affects him) and I wonder if that's because she's Varro's widow or a mother and that puts her in a separate category that he sympathizes with? He also sympathizes with Naevia in 2x05, but again, Naevia is someone else's woman. Or perhaps I'm overthinking it because Agron is all heart and how can you not be moved by the horrors these women have endured, yeah?

Oh my a ~c h a l l e n g e~
Ok but as excited as I am to read this in B&B through Agrons POV, I am super curious to how and what will play out in a verse with DURO (who I love a ridiculous amount now -you did this) (^_~)
Agrons reaction was probably just overlooked in the moment - I mean I probably would have overlooked it myself if I didn’t already know about Nagron - but it’s very quick and everyone else is looking and reacting (and I love Varro, omg)
And with Aurelia and Naevia, perhaps he is able to sympathise with them because they’ve got that inner fire/warriors heart that he’s so drawn to? I mean, he’s not real sympathetic to either Kore or Laeta and I would say that it’s because they are essentially Roman, but then so was Aurelia so it’s not that. But it’s probably just because of his Big, Beautiful Heart.
(^_^)
EDIT: but also, I don’t get why theirs was The Kiss That Changed The Nation when there had already been Barca with Auctus then Barca with Pietros - and Barca and Pietros had a couple of Really Sweet moments. Perhaps it’s because Agron and Nasir are more main character, rather than secondary?
Yeeaah, I need to move things along and get these dudes to Sinuessa already. I GOTS THINGS TO WRIIIIIITE!! (^_~)
Oh, gods. VARRO. And also, boys and their measurements. Geez. (This is where Nasir's remark in The Arena, Ch 2 comes from -- "Do you only ever place wager on cock?" ...or something like that.) Yeah, OK, fair enough. Agron's LOOK there could be written off as anyone's reaction (though I kinda think Varro and Ilithyia probably had that covered... heh).
I had a thought right after I posted: maybe Agron sympathizes because Agron lost Duro to Rome and Aurelia lost Varro and Naevia has (presumably) lost Crixus (because even though he's not dead yet, he's set to die in the arena and Agron figures he's as good as dead). So, he SEES their grief? But, OK, if this is the case, I have new love for his conversation with Naevia. He reaches out in the infirmary, anticipating some kind of connection to happen like it did between him and Nasir, but when Naevia opens up, she hates herself and she blames Agron and she curses the gods and Agron doesn't know what to do for her. I mean, Nasir tossed him a line to draw on "My brother called me Nasir" but Naevia is this explosive blast and whatever he tries to focus on in order to reach out to her just gets turned back on him? Am I making sense or... eh. Probably just rambling.
Having not seen Barca's introduction in the series, I can only speculate that Barca's relationship with Auctus was shown pretty early on (and having established that Barca is attracted to at least one man, it's not that much of a stretch that he'd take an interest in a second (Pietros)), so the audience could assimilate that into his character right away?? With Agron, we build up this idea about who he is FIRST (badass, big brother, Germanic warrior-turned-gladiator) and THEN we find out that he's attracted to another man? I don't know if that plays at all. It assumes that the shock from The Kiss was generated by Agron himself revealing an unanticipated aspect of his character... though, honestly, I was more struck by the fact that Nasir (who has been used for years (presumably)) would be READY to even consider Agron's attentions in a healthy way? But then again, yeah, I started watching this series pretty well-informed on Nagron so my ideas on this are skewed.
EDIT: But also, that near-death experience might have factored in there with Nasir evaluating his priorities and deciding that, as scary as it is, YES HE WILL LET THESE FEELINGS HAPPEN AFTER ALL?
Thank you again and forever for letting me talk at you about all these things. OMG ALL THE THINGS. HUGGSSSSS!!!!

Thank you, forever and ever, for talking at and sharing your thoughts with me - your thoughts make so much sense and give me new appreciations for these characters and this show Every Single Day. And yes, you are so right, Barca is already shown to be in both relationships, whereas Agron is “unknown” until The Kiss.
And oh gods, yes, Agron flails so hard in that convo with Naevia because she’s So Angry and, for once, he’s not. And he’s blaming himself and she’s blaming him and Nasir looks dead and Agron gets TEARY and OMG THAT SCENE!
