Oh, this is wonderful. This fic is off to a great start and I love all your ideas for future chapters. Some of my favorite parts were: the building tension to what we knew would happen, the worldbuildingish mention of the two moons, Beau and Caleb's cuddling, and your horribly painful descriptions of injuries (drinking acid). D&D mechanics have so many great opportunities for whump and h/c. For example, what does it feel like to be at 0 hp, but be stable due to a medicine check or spare the dying. Are they drifting in and out of consciousness? aware but just too weak to do anything? Strict rule following says that they are probably fully unconscious, and that brings with in the scene of concerned party members wondering when they'll wake up.
Another thought, what'll happen next time Caleb needs a healing potion in or after a fight???

Building tension felt really important since I was basically giving away the ending in the summary, so I'm glad you felt that worked and that the description of Caleb's injury itself was impactful. Beau and Caleb's cuddling is one of my favorite things in-canon, so it was really fun to weave it into a hurt/comfort story. :D
D&D mechanics really do lend themselves to great whump. That said, magical healing can also cheapen death and suffering, so the challenge for me when writing this story was to make the consequences of living such dangerous lives apparent. I hope you'll find the results worth reading!
