  1. Okay, I'm totally confused. Why is Eonwe apologizing? Why is everyone mad at her? Why is she at all to blame for a dragon appearing? That makes no sense. She has no control over what the dragon did. If anything she deserves their sympathy for being attacked by a DRAGON.

    1. Hellooo there! Please excuse the extremely late response, as I haven't been around for quite some time! I noticed your question and thought I'd offer a couple of words:

I don't think they're expressly angry with Eonwe. It's more along the lines the Thieves Guild is at the lowest they've ever been, so any mistake sets their chances of getting out of the pit they're stuck in so much further back. She deserves a lot of sympathy for the dragon attack, but everyone is so fed up with everything going wrong all the time. And, considering Bryn vouched for her, Mercer isn't pleased because he answers for whatever errors the Guild makes.

Eonwe apologizing is in her nature, because she's never done anything right, hasn't ever achieved anything (calling back to her conversation with Bryn about her parents' deaths and the guilt she feels) so she feels responsible for adding to these problems. Etienne had also asked her to help them, so even though she doesn't necessarily want to, she's going to anyways - because it's who she is.

Glad to have gotten to talk about this story after so many years since writing it. I'm also sorry for confusing you. A dragon attack definitely should garner sympathy! I doubt the Thieves Guild members have ever fought or survived an attack, so they wouldn't understand the danger firsthand.
