Ugh, certainly on one level... But he has a soft spot, or he wouldn't get involved in the first place. He can show compassion (outside of work) at this stage of his life - as much as he thinks it doesn't fit his image as a big tough soldier. Later, with the Decepticons he changes, but they all get pretty messed up by what goes down in the war.
