Comment on Old Enough To Read Again

  1. Yess, it's from Their Story, I made it my icon when I first made this account (I think?) and I unfortunately haven't been keeping up with it. Also, likewise here, always happy to find another darabella shipper.

I've been planning to write a few things, but it's that alongside my studies and other projects I keep planning, they range from a Darling-centric fancomic to different artworks to Instagram edits. So I hope I can at least get started, because two out of three fic ideas I've had are focused on darabella and I've been getting excited over them. It's also surprising to hear that you're more invested on the OC side of things, I'm particularly more focused on the canon characters but I do have one EAH OC that I love dearly, so I can definitely understand your love and dedication towards your OC(s). Would love to talk about EAH, the ship, or OCs with you! (I don't think AO3 has a private messaging system though, right?)

As for the fairytale prince trope you talked about, yess I could absolutely see what you were getting at in this fic, and it's a trope that I think is especially relevant to Daring's character. As someone who's been celebrated and glorified since birth, he's always been preparing for a specific type of life, one where his most important deed is rescuing a princess by kissing her awake. I'd always assumed/headcanoned that his family, some of his friends, and fans have always taken him at face-value. One of my headcanons was that he was just as emotionally neglected by his parents as his younger siblings were, albeit in a different way, where they glorified him and while encouraging him to always take first place and be perfect, they never really paid him comfort. One of the most striking lines to me from his moments with Rosabella was "I don't know why you're so good to me", rewatching Epic Winter and hearing that again was enlightening and also heartbreaking, it hurts to think that Daring is possibly a character who was never paid attention without having to give something in return or for something other than his princely heroic abilities or looks. I definitely agree with you on that ideal ship trope, ships where they encourage the other/each other to improve, grow, and to become better people are so so good. Definitely fell in love with this ship because of that.

    1. I don't think Ao3 has a private messaging system, but I do have Discord if you'd like to exchange them! I'm excited to hear about your other projects as well - I haven't done fanart in a while, so it cheers me up a lot when I see more fanart. I'll love to see your art & edits!

The in-depth analyses of Ever After High characters is so good, and I have a huge appreciation for how Ever After and the rest of the fairytale world is such a great way of criticising particular parenting styles, or how intergenerational trauma propagates! Daring was held up as a trophy kid, but fell from that grace, and had to find meaning beyond that. I think it's a very understandable struggle and one that is so fun to explore. Rosabella's Epic Winter diary, too, really solidified why I love the ship: "the prince returns better than before" is such a fantastic line.

      1. Oh my god I don't think I've ever read the Epic Winter diaries but yes, "the prince returns better than before" is such a great line. I totally agree with you on the "criticising particular parenting styles" bit, once I realized how much they were comparing the mother-daughter relationships of both Snow/Apple and EQ/Raven, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they did and how possibly in-depth the franchise was. Have you read the books? I loved reading them, Darling's book, Truth or Hair, and the first book are my favorites so far.
