Comment on When We Say Adieu

  1. Was always really curious to see what happened between part IV & part V and you delivered! That ending sequence with the gang and Zenigata is also one of my favorite scenes in part V. It feels so warm, and yet from Fujiko's point of view, it's so full of longing.

I really liked how everything felt awkward between them, especially with the scribbles in Lupin's planner that become more and more sparse. And the little moments between Goemon and Zenigata were sooo enjoyable. Their dynamic is so interesting to see! And the way Jigen flirts a little bit with Zeni at the end is so well done!

Kudos for those two sentences because they absolutely wrecked me: Their breathtaking home was funded by a career full of Zenigata's personal failures. - this struck me right to the chest, and:

Zenigata tapped his glass to Lupin’s, the way he wished he could just lean over and do with his lips.
Oh God no. Don’t go there. Focus.

the pining!!! the way zenigata has to STOP himself and this is clearly not the first time it has happened!!!!!!! good god!!!!

Anyway, I loved your take on what happened during this scene and would absolutely like to read more! Thank you for writing this :D

    1. A tanuki's face mixed with cherry blossoms

Ahh thank you so much for the amazing comment! This really fires me up to keep working on the next chapter!

I loved exploring Goemon and Zenigata having some time together, since really they have so few interactions it was fun to see what they might agree with each other on haha. In Goemon's chapter I've gotten to go over those scenes a second time in a different light, I really liked exploring what they might think about each other.

Exploring what I think might set up for each of their individual connections when there's a lot of doubt and distance by the start of Part 5 is a big part of this. I think longing for more clear connection to each other is a theme that I wanted to build on because that's a driving part of the gang's (somewhat dysfunctional) dynamic in Part 5.

I'm so happy you enjoyed my Zenigata pining, I sort of wanted to have him going further and further into being honest with his feelings as he got more drunk and couldn't hide it as well. I wanted to play him as stubbornly denying that just as much as he stubbornly pursues Lupin. Constantly convincing himself that this is all about the job and not about anything else.

I'm so glad to hear you liked what I built in the scene so far and I really hope that I can accomplish adding more good layers with each perspective!
