You're welcome! I also hate all those stories where the Dursleys turn into horrible, physically abusive monsters who beat Harry for every little thing instead of neglectful, emotionally abusive adults who had every reason to be scared of magic like Rowling's had portrayed them in the books. (I mean, what did they she and Vernon know about it? Petunia's experiences with it where all bad; Snape hurt her, the Marauders were bullies who would have made fun of her if they ever had met, there are head-canons that her parents were murdered by Death Eaters to hurt Lily, her sister was killed because of the son Petunia was now expected to take care off instead never mind her own personal feelings about that matter and she propbaly understood Harry was placing her own son in potential danger with his continued presence... In her place, I wouldn't have like magic a while lot too.) They would have been too afraid of the potential consequences to raise a hand against Harry.
Exactly. Petunia is almost always portrayed as some child abusing hobo while all along, she was just afraid of her families security and the consequences of having someone who was a distinct murder target, under her roof. And, i think most people don't take into consideration the fact that she must have been undermined so much as a child because her sister was a witch and she could do all kinds of crazy magical things. I mean, petunia must have wanted to be like that too. She must have felt that her sister was always better than her in every way. and really, that feeling is not good and it induces depression. and stuff.
Right? Petunia deserves some sympathy too. I mean, don't get me wrong, she and Snape aren't exactly good, but there's no need to villainize them so badly either. They are just... people. Normal people with normal feelings and normal problems even if one of them is a spy with magical powers. Honestly, I think Petunia has a lot of left over insecurities from her childhood because of Lily. She had the looks, the grades, the friends and the boys, on top of being special in a way Petunia could never be and who was probably the apple of her parents eyes... and she was just... Plain gossip Petunia with the long neck. She was likely afraid Dudley would be the same compared to Harry.
i get y’all’s argument but idm ppl villanizing her. a human who willingly puts a child in a cupboard and treats/abuses him occasionally is a horrible person. yes they have a past and insecurities, doesn’t make her a good person. she’s honestly crap
I'm not disagreeing. Petunia could have handled her envy over Lily and her grief over her death and her fear of magic in a less negative manner towards a child. I just dislike people making her a villain for the sake of her being a villain, if that makes sense. It makes her flat, boring, one-dimensional. Petunia is so much more nuanced than that. She's not bad because she was born bad, she's bad because because she's letting the past and her insecurities influence her. She's bad because she had a chance to be good.
