I very much enjoyed all of the story. The title grabbed me initially as King is rarely silent and yaks to Ram. Ram is the silent one. So the boys return laughing and happy to find a devastating tornado had come through to attack King’s beloved family of plants. The beauty of this story is that it shows reactions from Ram’s point of view. But what is touching is that the quiet intense Ram not only loved King so much, but also that he truly understood King and could feel King’s pain. Ram was even more hurt at the devastation to his love King , than he was hurt by his own father’s infidelity. This was very touching and indicative of a deep caring.
The descriptive pain of the plants destruction was powerful. “shredded on their graves. “ I love this. There is little doubt that King who talked to plants and gave them names, loved these plants like children. King was angry and defeated and in pain. I love the “ white streak of moonlight peeking from the window stamped across. “ I also love “ the victimized ruins to shower back to the rug.” This is a beautiful image. But it also defines strongly that King was a victim. His private world was invaded and molested. His children were ravaged. I was robbed and felt the same violation. Ram had been known unfairly to be cold as he was so quiet. Yet he is a person of intense feelings. So the metaphor of the volcanic reaction indicates a deep deep hot emotional reaction.
Yet despite the bubbling tempest of anger toward the scum that did the crime, Ram controlled his reaction, to comfort King. Lovingly he rubbed circles on his back. It was mourning. There was death. “They continued to bathe in the mourning silence of the condo. “ This is such a beautiful image. Also suffering moments, listening to painful whimpers , seem like time has slowed with suffering, like molasses. Nicely said. In pain King hugs Ram tightly like a koala holding onto a branch for dear life. Beautiful. Again I was very touched by Ram. Instead of just sweeping plants and dirt into the trash, Ram carefully separates the dirt to be reused. But most touching of all is replacing each plant into a lonely and empty pot so King could bid a mournful farewell. This actually made me teary. A love,y gesture of love and understanding.
I wanted to say that “ rested a gentle hand on his head and pet the top of his head “ just made me smile. I zoomed into Ram’s petting his huskies whom he also loved dearly.
Also I grew up around live volcanoes so I have a strong reaction to the volcano metaphor. I love it.
I always thought it would be an interesting idea to see how Ram would react to King being silent. Considering that Ram has said he, "Talks normally," and given the fact that King is quite verbose, I figured that he would be uncomfortable with the silence. And as a reader, you would know just by the title that something bad must've happened in order for King to be silent.
I also thought it would be more interesting to write about the devastation through Ram's perspective. We all know how King would feel if his plants were destroyed, so seeing it happen through Ram's point of view makes us feel like we are watching it happen with him as opposed to experiencing King's pain with him.
Ram is such a caring and loving person. Even in the final episode, when King pretended that he forgot about the kiss, Ram still told him he wasn't drunk and smiled at their photo together when he was texted it. When King was hurt, he was there by his side the entire time like a guardian angel because he was constantly worried for him. He was very attentive. Animal lovers tend to be loving people because we know how to give love and put someone before us as we do it so often with our pets. Ram is no exception.
