this is... way more painful than i expected from the summary, which is certainly saying something because it already spelled a lot of suffering for everyone involved. i think what feels the most awful is the jiang cheng situation and how that reflects on wwx’s relationship with the jiang sect. like, of course jc doesn’t know about the core transfer but in a way wwx being forced to marry for the good of the sect despite his feelings for lan zhan feels like him giving up the last thing he had left after the war. he’s already given up his cultivation, and now he has to give up his home and a chance at love. in a word: ouch. not to mention the loss of agency involved. jc not even bothering to let him choose to sacrifice his happiness definitely feels like the ultimate betrayal. i also noticed they haven’t reconciled yet so that must make this entire situation even worse for wwx.
damn, this is some weapons-grade angst. i’m very excited to read on, thanks for posting!
lbr, the Jiang family dynamics were... not good, to say the least. throughout canon, I've noticed that WWX seems sort of... resigned? to everything that he sacrifices for the Jiang sect. his hand is about to be cut off, and he thinks 'oh well, guess I'll learn to wield a sword with my other hand then'. both JFM and Madam Yu tell him to protect JC (and JYL), with Madam Yu even telling him that he should die for JC if it comes to it, and he never thinks of that as an unfair demand for them to make of a seventeen year old. even with the core transfer, he thinks of it as their due for taking him in and teaching him to cultivate. in his second life, he finally gets to a point where he thinks of his debts to the Jiang sect as settled, and he's able to seek out his own happiness with LWJ. in this universe though, he is yet to get to that point. he is at a point where he realizes that it's unfair, yes, but not yet at the point where he'll say 'you know what? I think I've sacrificed enough, and I deserve to live my own life'
you're right when you say it feels like he's giving up the last thing he had left, because he is. this is the one thing he had for himself, and now he has to sacrifice that too. and yeah, JC might not know about the core transfer, but how could WWX ever throw that back in his face? no, he'll stay silent and sacrifice his own happiness because it would be worth it to keep his family safe. and in JC's mind, he's been raised to believe that this is the sort of thing he can expect from WWX, that WWX will do what needs to be done at any cost to himself, and that it's an acceptable thing for WWX to do, so of course he doesn't even have to ask to know that WWX will do this if he tells him to. and of course, WWX in turn feels betrayed by the fact that JC just practically signed his life over with no input from him
