Comment on Of Kings and Bastards

  1. I'd say Cregan. Cregan Stark was a good Lord and a fine swordsman. I think it would make sense to name a Stark-son after him. And also, always liked the name. ;-)

    1. Okay. Also how would you feel about Cregan Stark/Nymeria Sand or Rhaenys Targaryen/Meera Reed/Roslin Frey?

      1. Hmm, that's tough. It would highly depend on whether or not Brandon is still alive, I think.

If Brandon is still there, Cregan would be less important and could in theory marry a Frey or a Reed. The Freys are Riverlords, however, and are below House Tully. And since Catelyn, the daughter of the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands after all, has - in this scenario - already married Brandon Stark, there would not be too much to gain with a further connection to the Riverlands for House Stark.
The Reeds are among the principal bannermen of the Starks, so that might work out. I'm not sure how powerful they are, though, so how tempting such a union would be for House Stark.
Nymeria Sand (or any other bastard for that matter) could only come into question as his paramour. Even with Brandon alive and Cregan not being the heir to Winterfell, he would never be allowed to marry a bastard girl. The would be three options here:
        1. Cregan would abdicate whatever heritage he has.
        2. The bastard girl would only be his paramour but never the mother of his trueborn children
        3. The bastard girl would be legitimized (but even then it would depend who the father is. A legitimized daughter of Prince Oberyn miht come into question, the legitimized daughter of some Dornish knight not).
Rhaenys would be completely out in this scenario, since the son of the second son of Winterfell is not important enough for a princess of the realm to be worthy of her hand.

If Brandon were dead, Rhaenys would be an option again, I think. But only if Brandon did not father a son on Catelyn before his death, otherwise Cregan would again not be the heir to Winterfell. Meera Reed would still be an option, depending on the political and military strength of House Reed (about I know too little at the moment). Roslin Frey, however, would move further away from the "circle of favorites", since in such a scenario and after such a twist of fate, House Stark would either have to strengthen its rule over the North or bond closer to one of the major Houses in the south, meaning a Great House or a Lord Paramount. And again, a bastard-girl could only come into question as his paramour.

So this highly depends on Brandon's fate, I think.

Politically, it would in both scenarios make sense to first look for a girl from the North from on of the major bannermen of House Stark (maybe a daughter of House Manderly, a daughter of House Bolton if one existed here, a Dustin, Glover, Hornwood, Tallhart or Karstark). If there would be no one there, a girl from the south would come into question. Which one, though, would highly depend on whether or not Cregan would be the heir to Winterfell or not...

        1. I was thinking Cregan Stark could be the trueborn son of Eddard Stark and the late Ashara Dayne? And so Cregan Stark/Meera Reed/Nymeria Sand/Roslin Frey or Cregan Stark/Meera Reed/Rhaenys Targaryen/Roslin Frey? Also, how would you feel about including a Lannister OC who could serve as a personal nemesis to Cregan Stark before the Night King?

          1. I know, but who would be an option for him beyond just being his paramour would still depend on his own position/rank, meaning whether he would be the heir to Winterfell or not. So Brandon's fate is the important part here.

            1. I reckon Brandon Stark should still die? So Cregan Stark is the heir?

              1. Possibly, yes. Although it would make for some potentially interesting options if Brandon were still alive with sons of his own. If Cregan would not be the heir to Winterfell, then Ned could allow him at least a few more freedoms or a little more say in who he wished to marry. Of course, that would still be a political thing, but...

Also, Ned and Ashara would not necessarily have to live in the North all the time, could spend some time in Dorne, in King's Landing or even in Essos. I don't see Ned as an adventurer who would have fun travelling Essos, but maybe Ashara would be... ;-)

But more than anything, some important questions must be answered first:
Did the Doom of Valyria happen? If so, did Agon conquer Wersteros? If the Doom did not happen, what are the relations between the Seven Kingdoms and Valyria?
If Aegon did conquer Westeros, did the rest of the history play out the same or did maybe the Blackfyres win the throne or did Aerys not go mad or did maybe Maester Aemon take the throne when it was offered to him? I think those are the things that must be answered before everything else. :-)

                1. I sorta want Eddard Stark to become the Lord Paramount of the North, but a bit more prepared?

                  1. Well, Brandon could of course have died at a young age, of a fever or just a kick against the head by a horse. ;-)

                    1. I’m thinking he could’ve still died along with Richard just before Robert’s Rebellion. Also, want me to send outlines for the Lannister OC, the North and Cregan Stark? And would you prefer Nymeria Sand or Rhaenys Targaryen?

                      1. Check your email. I just sent the outlines
