I haven't seen this myself, but I don't stay abreast of zines and community events much. That would go a little way towards explaining why r/fanfiction is full of frothing lunatics who insist readers are all ungrateful vermin who should be murdered for engaging wrong (not hyperbole, fyi).
Re: Twitter and Tumblr, my first reaction is that the nature of the platform is what makes it hard to get engagement. Social media with a feed structure is like tossing a message in a whitewater rapid; it's only there for a second and then it's gone. It's very hard to get eyes on your stuff there unless you already have a dedicated follower base. I've posted stories to Tumblr myself, but I only ever got single-digit notes.
