    I'm afraid I don't follow that reference. Like I said, I based Maria in this fic a little on Roxanne, but I wasn't aware there was also a former Champion who became a teacher.

    Well, I'm glad the lost came as surprising. I don't want everybody to think that Greninja is invincible (he certainly isn't) and wanted to set the tone of how all gym battles are going to be.

      I didn't want to explain the joke but this is what Leon's aim is in Sword and Shield versions: raise the next generation of trainers to be even stronger than him.

      And his catchphrase is "Champion Time!"
