I kind of like it if Kaneki was in the period where he was becoming Haise but then didn't join CCG. Maybe his memories came back too early and he ran or maybe he got sucked to the BNHA world before CCG completely brainwashed him. So he's pretty lost and helpless in a strange world where he got no friends and no where to go. Then Enji the hero helped him.
