that’s so relatable! i’d planned a longfic once (which obviously ended up never being finished) and vaguely planned out the entire storyline, only to immediately diverge in the first chapter… it seems that it just tends to happen like that, lol. ended up trying three different version of that fic before giving up and scrapping it entirely :’)
honestly, same! but now i’ve figured out i’m aroace, so i’m more attached in a “my son!”-way to most of my favourite characters sdjkh though that does feel slightly strange to say as someone who only recently became an adult…
one can never have enough of these types of fics, so i’d love to read whatever you’ve got planned for OotP, both for this fic and a separate one! and also same once again - it’s something about the Vibes with hbp that just doesn’t sit right with me, though i can’t really put it into words. it feels like a final shift in the hp franchise that ended up changing the series into a much darker, much more serious direction than i’d like it to be - despite OotP being plenty serious as well, I feel that it handles that much better somehow!
By the time OotP ends Ed would be 18 and just so done with everything, Greed would just annoy him in a little brother way so bad lmao.

I think where OotP succeeds is that it is a realistic kind of evil that takes center stage, while HBP and beyond is just the typical evil overlord who is evil because it's fun. Like I don't actually care about Voldemort, but Umbridge? I love to hate her. Reading that book always gets my blood pressure up. I also really related with Harry feeling like no one gave a shit about him back when it came out, so that probably biased me towards it even more.

honestly, it's not quite scrapped - i do still have it, i've just given up on it for the time being lol. but this entire convo inspired me to maybe pick it up again! i've been trying to get back into writing again recently anyways, trying and failing to produce some bnha fics, so maybe a change of pace (and fandom) would be nice ^^

and you're so right! i haven't thought about it too much in a deeper sense, but this does seem to be the crux of the issue - i could deeply relate with some of the things happening in OotP and even the things i couldn't relate to were realistic in regards to the HP universe, while hbp leans too much into the inherent evilness of voldemort and becomes boring in return.. though i suppose you can't expect much in terms of writing prowess from someone like jkr :')
At this point the sequel is like an 80% sure thing, unless the fic goes so off the rails that it ends in an entirely different direction from what I intended :') And seriously, Ed needs someone more annoying than him to take care of, for karma.

I'm still salty that the backstory we got for Voldemort was basically "he was born from rape drug potion so he's a sociopath". Like... what? Is that really all you can come up with? (I ask, rhetorically) If this fic goes into HBP I'm rewriting that backstory 100%. Just idk make him slowly go more and more deranged and evil the more horcruxes he makes or something. Have the orphanage and Hogwarts feed into pre-existing issues. Human villains are way more interesting!

right !! it's so lackluster and boring that he doesn't get much more development beyond that - him being a (extremely) flawed human is much more interesting than him simply being pre-destined to be crazy because of some love potion. i don't remember clearly if that was brought up in the novels, but the horcruxes literally taking parts of his humanity and sanity away with every piece of his soul he breaks off is at least a more interesting solution. inter-house prejudices would have probably already been bad even without slytherin being the "evil house" yet during voldie's time because of the whole blood purity thing, so that would've been great to expand upon! but again, not much to expect from jkr.

If I ever tackle his backstory I will 100% go that route because it's so much more compelling. Would also work really well with the way the piece of his soul attached to Harry, which was the last he made, looked basically like a shriveled baby.
I probably will try to, I like the way hoye did so I might follow that lead.
