Glad you’re doing good! 😊
I hope you enjoy your writing class! I kinda wish I took more fun classes when I was in undergrad, i took a few, most notably scuba diving, but most of mine were technical classes. But creative writing would have been an interesting one… I have no clue how people teach things like writing or art that seem to be so subjective to everyone, at least to me! I think it’s neat they’re teaching you how to come up with ideas, that’s interesting… and then you assess the viability of them?
Absolutely loved your story and the imagery! 😊 I’m very intrigued by what’s happening and would love to read more if that’s ever something you continue, either as an amateur or professional piece! 😊 and I think it’s so funny you say you can’t visualize things so well when every story I’ve read by you leaves me with such vivid, clear images, more so than I’ve gotten from some books I’ve read! Batman appearing in your home alone story springs to mind, and your batcave description, your Robin’s nest, I could go on cause it’s literally every story you’ve ever written I’ve come away with such great visual scenes! 😊
I’m glad you thought my thoughts on the “wergy something” (hey, I’m glad I was fairly close 😂) was interesting! Yes, Tim is the best candidate for translating between Jason and Bruce and not just about wergild. That does put him in a tough spot more often than not, two similarly minded stubborn emotionally constipated people who love each other so much but also have a hard time understanding each other for all those reasons… no wonder Tim has to have lots of coffee!
It’s interesting to hear someone say A Death In The Family is a weird story arc… I’ve really not gotten to talk to anyone who’s actually read it and I only know the main points regarding Jason running away to find his birth mother and dying at the hands of the Joker. So I’m interested in learning more details in that story. But oh my gosh I laughed out loud when I read about your inability to characterize Jason without death jokes! 😂😂😂 so funny!
Life’s been pretty good so far, hoping 2023 will be a better year than 2022 was, 2022 was just very challenging for many different reasons. So I’m hoping this year will be better! I hope you have a great year too! 😊
Scuba diving as a college class? Wow! So far what we've been doing is mostly discussion based, but we're doing another writing thing tomorrow i believe. It's not viability tho, but compatibillity. the lady who wrote our book talks about story ideas as dating partners. have a glass of wine with a few and try them out before deciding if you click and want to commit.
Aww, thanks. I have no idea when I'll go back to it, but I feel certain I will in some way. And that's actually fascinating! Maybe it's because it's hard for me that i do it well? like, i have to put double the effort into imagery so it comes out well for someone who isn't me, and just passable for me? there's a theory anyhow
Oh yeah. Poor Timmers. ALso, today we were talking about how Beowulf shows that the wergild system jjust like... literally falls apart when its called on, and just doesn't really WORK and that made it all the more correct and painful.
Yeah. Just like, Bruce accusing Jason of murder? Jason's random crime alley neighbor having saved all his family's stuff and giving it to him when he goes for a walk? him looking up his potential moms' locations and nothing else about them? even joker in the middle east seems farfetched. idk, it just all seems like someone had to really stretch things thin to get the events in order. and then the whole poll nonsense. ugh. but yeah. sadly for jaybird, there's just so many jokes to make and things to unpack when he's a zombie
heh. i hear you. 2022 had its ups, but still. two-face cursed it i guess. Here's hoping '23 is kinder to us!

Yes, scuba diving was fun! Got a PE credit and certified at the same time! I highly recommend it if you are interested! 😊 I figured, when else would I have the opportunity to do this?
That’s an interesting way to think about the ideas… not that it’s a bad idea, just may not be right for you at that time to write about it. So you actually have a textbook?
Maybe your difficulty visualizing does help you write such vivid imagery! A neat and plausible theory! I’m so glad you do write such visually strong stories! 😊
You’re so right, the wergild doesn’t really work well… When you wrote that, I realized I have a few real-life examples I am familiar with… I know some people who had a family member die and could have rightly sued for wrongful death, but they felt, what would that accomplish, a lot of time and heartache and stress, and it wouldn’t change anything, their loved one would still be dead. So they didn’t sue. Then I know some other people who had a family member die and sued a party that had evidence they had no wrongdoing in the death, but because they were a party with money, the people sued, I guess hoping to get some money from a settlement cause I don’t think they would have won in court. And that just strained all kinds of relationships with all involved. Just really sad all the way around, that you can’t really do anything to “fix” a death no matter how hard you try, and sometimes trying to “fix” it or get some sort of recompense from it can cause more harm than good.
I never really thought of that, yeah it does seem shaky when you frame A Death In The Family that way… of course, lots of comics have shaky or nonsense plots and things… and you can have some suspension if disbelief, but if a character acts out of character… then that becomes a whole lot harder to justify. Maybe Jason not looking up things about the women makes sense, he’s impulsive and he maybe wanted to have those conversations in person, but on the other hand, he’s Robin and trained as a detective and an academic so he’d be curious at the very least… also I’ve not read the comics to know for sure but I think I’ve heard Batman asked Jason if he pushed the guy… which I guess is asking if he murdered him, but also Bruce could have been asking if Jason had to defend himself, and just used bad words to ask… this again is where I think fanfiction could really delve into the misunderstanding trope paired with the Bruce has killed people too, and I don’t see that explored. I’d love to, I just don’t know if I could do it Justice but I may try someday.
I hope 2023 is better for both of us too!
Thanks so much for your discussions! Love to hear from you! Have a great weekend! 😊
Not so much a 'textbook' but a collection of essays (compiled into a book, but accessible online) by a writer. Try googling Charlie Jane Anders
I'm so glad they're seen as strong visuals! Now I gotta get on to the other senses lol.
Oh, dear. That's horrible for those people, and you too I'm sure. I hope healing did come in the end.
Oh yeah, Comics are ALL over the place lol, and characters are characterized differently by every writer (much like in fanfic lol). It was also like the 60s when the comic came out, so internet spying wasn't a huge thing, but like, if he located their ADDRESSES you'd think he, trained by Batman, could notice Sheila's embezzlement, like, come on.
Ooooh very cool take! So, what Bruce thinks he says: Jason, did you push the man to get him away from you so that you were not hurt, and that is why he fell? VS What Jason thinks Bruce meant: Jason did you knowingly commit murder because you were angry? Hmmmm... interesting premise....

Thanks! I hope you don’t mind me asking so many questions about your writing class, it’s just so intriguing to me!
Your work is fantabulous, I love how it can evoke such clear and vivid descriptions… I primarily notice the visual, but you definitely have the other senses too! Like the little snippet you put with the chill of the fall air, and some of your characters interacting through touch, is very powerful too! It’s also so cool to see your stories grow and improve in these traits, not that you were ever “bad”, but you have learned and grown and improved on an impressive raw talent! 😊
Thank you! Healing happens, just not always in the way you hope or expect it too. And someone told me regarding losing a loved one that “the wound heals, but the scar remains”. It’s just part of life, I guess. We just have to enjoy the good times while we can! 😊
I love your rant about Jason not catching his mother was an embezzler! 😂😂
Yes! That’s the only way I can justify the Bruce Wayne I love saying that to Jason! I mean, that’s traditionally (I.e., before I found comics) how I like to justify canon is keep the original words/scenarios but reframe it a bit to make more sense to the characters/stories. Also, if you ever get a chance to read Detective Comics #27 (the original first appearance of Batman) do let me know what you think especially in regards to this particular scenario… that’s where I’d love to write a fanfic about this situation and explore the parallels a bit.
Thanks so much for responding to me! I love all your thoughts and your work too! Have a great week also!
Ah yes. A similar quote that I did not expect to gut me in WandaVision: "What is grief if not love perservering?"
I love this boy but sometimes he is just Dumb.
I very much approve of re-interpreting canon to fit your headcanon. It's what I do all day lmao. Is that the one back where he's ok with killing? I remember discussing that with someone... was it you?

Oh, that’s a good quote… and very true!
😂😂 yes that is true, Jason can be Dumb. Really any of the Batboys can be Dumb in the right situation. Can be frustrating, but can also make for good stories! Especially the classic misunderstanding story I tend to enjoy! 😊
Yes we’ve talked about that comic before! Yeah, Batman seems okay with killing, its not that he goes around killing people intentionally, but he doesn’t seem upset when criminals end up dying as a result of him pursuing them. Again, with my “Re-interpreting” I think I could merge the whole Batman has killed people before to still fit in with the Bruce Wayne “I don’t approve of killing as a means of fighting crime”… especially with that story. If you ever do read that story, I’d love to hear your thoughts! 😊
Oh yeah. They have a very fun dynamic where it's almost like... they're so smart that they lost the basic level of intelligence, if that makes sense. Kinda like remembering digits 15-100 of pi, but forgetting that it starts with 3.1415...
Yep! I read something kinda like that. Bruce and Jason were talking about the want to kill the Joker and why Bruce wouldn't, but he literally gave Jason... not quite permission, but pre-standing forgiveness for it. He explained that he has killed before (as part of League training) and that, after having done it, cannot and will not do it again. I think that's more interesting than Bruce just up and deciding this black and white line in the moral sand. Instead he's crossed it before, and is haunted by it so that it's unrepeatable, either because of guilt/shame type trauma so that he can't bring himself to do it, or because, perhaps, it was so easy to do and justify, and he's worried that if he doesn't draw such a hard line, he won't draw any lines at all.

😂😂 that makes perfect sense! My sister says I can be like that lots of times… she said if I ever get my “P-H-Duhr” she’s going to call me “Dr. Dipstick” or whatever other appropriate dumb name comes to mind 😂😂
That’s an interesting story! I do like that… cause I think there are lots of reasons why Bruce may have explored and/or been exposed to killing or turning the other cheek when someone is in trouble based on his experiences, and why that would have shaped his vigilante rules. I think it’s in the Under The Red Hood cartoon where he’s like, “it would be too easy for me to torture and kill the Joker”, but if he went down that way, he doesn’t know if he could stop or draw the line at just the Joker. Which sounds a lot like what you just said! I really like the way you phrased it, like, he’s been down that path before and he’s haunted by how easy it was… really great take!
Yes, exactly! It could also give rise to an interesting dynamic where Bruce could almost admire the way Jason can stick to his code, even if that code includes killing. Because does have lines, they're just in different places.

😂😂 it’s why I love her! She doesn’t care to tell it to me straight! 😂😂
I love that thought! Of Bruce admiring Jason sticking to his guns even if he doesn’t necessarily agree with his methods! That’s a good perspective/dynamic to explore as well. Thanks for sharing that I didn’t even think of that!
