  1. 'Rodney stormed in, took in the room and the situation in about twenty seconds flat and puffed up into the Wrath of Science. It was awesome.'

It certainly is an awesome line!
I also love John's very in-character sounding self-check of his own headspace, and his delight in how his John-skills (spec-ops) translate into his new body.

    1. That, in particular, is one of my favorite sentences I've ever written.

I have repetitive stress injuries and often "write" scenes in my head and then only put my hands on the keyboard to write. Rodney was SO easy to write here, heart on his sleeve, wrath in his mouth, shoulders square, a sniff, chin up, and...

I think John self-checks in a lot, partially because he was brought up in a family where he had to hide who/what he was/wanted to be. And then he went and joined the military. He's got to check himself before he wrecks himself from being a dumbass. He's seen too many zoomies go down because they might be great in the air, but literally pants on the ground.

No, I'm not British. Their pants were on the ground sometime, somewhere they should have exercised more Operational Awareness, and there you go. Man down: shot himself the foot by his own dick.

      John was NOT going home.

And he may be a spec-ops poster boy, but being good at compartmentalization is an excellent skill to have when you're
      a) gay
      b) DADT was a ham-handled way of not losing good people.
      c) an adorable goofball with a heart of gold.
      d) But really fucking good at flying. Something MADE him want to stay, even at McMurdo.

Those self-check-in skills are good for reading rooms, and reading someone else's suffering. It's HELPFUL hypervigilance.

Except when you wake up the Wraith. Ooops?
