The aunt and uncle are rather compelling to me. They definitely aren't being great or even good parents to her, but they aren't terrible or cruel either. They're just people with certain pasts and circumstances.

I didn't quite get this. Does she have a habit of creating illusions of the cat, which makes her unsure? Or has she just developed an expectation of unintentionally creating illusions? If it's the latter, then I don't think that's really communicated elsewhere. A worry she might do it at some point, sure, but not an general expectation.
