Comment on Senatus Populusque Sardegna

  1. If they are, I can sympathize, because I could guess where that might come from. If you view your country as unfairly demonized or shortchanged, belittled or another demeaning adjective, you'd want to push back against that too. And that's a slippery slope. The logical leap from "were were better than that" to "we were the best" isn't huge. The Italians often get more flak than they deserve in the same way I'm sure the French are tired of the surrender jokes. It's a frustration I try to understand, and I won't demonize anyone for it. Because I've been there, I think we all have.

      1. That's part of what I think the most interesting thing about the Mediterranean theater is. It's kind of a big cat and mouse game between a rising-star navy locked in a cage with the world's fading-but-still-assertive global hegemon. The fact a lot of the battles can go either way depending on how you view them is a testament to the incredible capacity for force preservation both powers managed to exhibit. From the Italian perspective, someone can be proud that they were never really decisively defeated and surviving and achieving victories while being stuck in a British box, and the British can be proud they managed to keep the imperial highway open, continued to conduct escort and convoy missions successfully, and displayed incredible creativity in conducting operations while naval resources are stretched across the world from the North to the Java Sea. At least, that's my read of it.

        1. Yeah they were decisively defeated in the end as the British ultimately ran the Italians out of fuel which is what got them in the end
