    I was so afraid to click on this link when I read the warnings! But then I saw that you were the author, and I took courage. I'm glad I did! You are handling the situation with grace and delicacy, as usual. The saddest thing is that although I never would have thought of it, I actually can imagine Fred taking advantage of Mary like that. :(

    I do wish we could have seen a little bit more of John's relief at the brother revelation....

      Thanks for the compliment - the warning has to be there, but the action is very much off-stage.

      We know about servants and their vulnerability to the sexual advances of their masters and masters' sons at that time. But this is not always addressed in Victorian novels. When I thought of the theme, I too could imagine Fred acting in this way.
