Comment on Even Tomorrow, You Will Have Today

  1. Aw, thank you! Autumn's my favourite season, can you tell?

I'm sure some of Itachi's professors would have recognised Kisame. Most of them would have let it go because Kisame's not actively wanted at the minute and Itachi's leaving their law program anyway. But I'm actually going with the idea that one of them (possibly Danzo because he's an awful person) let it slip to Fugaku just who came to visit with Itachi.

As for the confrontation scene between Itachi and Fugaku, it pretty much wrote itself up until the point where Kisame joined the fray. I'm not sure how well it translates into the scene, but Fugaku's actions are fairly out of character for him. Which doesn't make it okay, of course, but under ordinary circumstances, he would never have thought about striking his son in public like that. He's always been firm with his sons, but not violent. However, he doesn't know about Itachi's blindness or his burnout, and he can't think of single unmalicious reason that Itachi would be hanging out with Kisame besides betrayal. All he knows is that his son just abandoned the future they've worked so hard on securing, and that he did so with Kisame of all people at his side. Also, the version of Kisame that he knows from their run ins in court is not someone who he believes is capable of stepping in as a means of support for someone in Itachi's situation, much less doing so willing for the son of an enemy.

Itachi knows this, but he also knows that his father won't give him the chance to explain the situation or listen to him because he won't like what he has to say. Fugaku doesn't want to hear that he played a part in the events that led to this confrontation, much less take responsibility for them. He doesn't want to know how Itachi has changed, and so while Itachi loves him, he won't forgive him for that.

Kisame pulls his gun on Fugaku without any intention to shoot. He just wants to both let Fugaku know that he could do it and get Itachi out of the situation as quickly as possible. Before Itachi, he considered Fugaku a minor irritation and someone he could frustrate terribly for fun. Now that he's with Itachi, he can't look at Fugaku and not see the man responsible for putting too much on Itachi's shoulders - the father who did not make an effort to check to see if his son was okay when he started missing classes by the dozen and avoiding family members, and who Itachi refused to go seek medical attention until it was too late because he didn't want him finding out. It really pisses him off that none of Itachi's family looked close enough to see what was really going on - even in the case of Shisui and Sasuke. He would have thought that if the beloved Uchiha heir was struggling and suffering, that something would have been done. But instead, it was him who made the effort to find out what was wrong and then offer to help Itachi when needed. He doesn't think that Fugaku has the right to say that he's bad for Itachi when Fugaku did nothing to help Itachi when the other needed support the most.

Then after Fugaku learns about Itachi's blindness, the main reason he essentially removes him from the family is because regardless of the situation, he cannot have the named heir of the Uchiha name and law firm in contact (much less in intimate relations) with a known criminal. He is also embarrassed by his actions, and while it's not much, his taking the responsibility off of Itachi's shoulders like that is the closest to an apology he is going to make when he is still deeply unhappy with the situation.

Anyway, sorry for rambling on! I might revisit this chapter during the editing process and adjust it a little to make some of this a little more clear. But for now, I'm going to leave it as is. Thank you once again for your lovely comments! I really look forward to them after every update. :D

    1. I love the complexity you wrote with Fugaku's character! He is not pure evil but that doesn't mean he doesn't do bad things and doesn't hurt people. And that trait, being so sure you're right that you won't accept when you're wrong and absolutely bulldoze the opinions of others because of it... oh, it brings a lot of hurt. But I can see how that trait made him a first-class lawyer. That is probably one of the reasons why he won't question it. It worked out for him this far, so why doubt it?
Honestly, it is interesting to see that from Fugaku's perspective, he was the only one who cared about Itachi.

It's sweet that Kisame is so passionate about protecting Itachi. And yeah, he does so in the ways he knows how, which means a gun 😆

Don't apologize, I love reading your insight on the chapters!

      1. Thank you! I'm really glad to hear you enjoy reading these little extra tidbits of lore I have for this story. It's nice to be able to share them with someone who is actually interested in reading Kisachi fanfiction.

I try avoid writing any of my characters (or versions of other peoples' characters) as being simply bad for no reason. It makes such a more fulfilling reading and writing experience when they actually have some flavour! Any one of the characters in this fic (except Naruto, tbh) could be considered in the wrong, all depending on which perpespective you choose to analyse. I just think the cognitive dissonance of it all makes it that much more entertaining and memorable.

And I love how Kisame loves Itachi! He is honestly just so enamoured by him. He didn't approach him at the beginning for any particular reason, but after learning a little bit more about Itachi's situation, he was just like, I can't let this very beautiful and very clever individual waste away like this. Who the hell is letting this just happen? So he steps up, and very quickly decides that it's the best decision he's ever made. They're so sweet!
