Comment on stepping in the same river twice

  1. thank you for asking!! :> OH i see haha, yeah i've seen a couple of those premises where the oc keeps the body of one 'canon' while crossing over into a different 'canon', i've enjoyed several too, but for the specific kind of character that Mor is, i just prefer the au-reincarnation route. but maybe i'll change my mind for an au drabble down the line or something!! mor's first instinct in any weird new world would likely be to try to blend in haha, so i guess the dramatic/comedic irony would write itself with how badly he does it. (though if i was going to write a twst-body ending up in another universe's setting, i think i would actually pick a canon character to do so, since that lets me focus more on the worldbuilding implications without worrying about also establishing the OC to the audience who may not be familiar/interested.)

anyway, glad you understand/agree on the benefits of the au-reincarnation route! to me, it kind of neatly prioritizes what themes and questions will be focused on in a story, i think. (a big one i hate answering is 'how did they get there and won't they try to get back since their life is interrupted' haha, and separating it into 'another life' generally avoids placing serious reader expectation on that being answered.) but a setting like twst, that makes a lot of sense, it's well within audience expectations that 'ah yes, yuu is canonically transported physically to this magic world from a nonmagic world, and this OC simply hijacked/replaced that process', there's no *new* narrative questions raised. (and danganronpa plays enough with mindwiping/brainwashing/simulations that i think you could equally kind of handwave it in the way that reincarnation gets handwaved haha.)

    1. like, can i ask then because i'm curious, how do you answer or plan to answer the 'how did they get there and how will they try/succeed/fail to get back' isekai question raised for the yuusonas in xianxia (is it an original xianxia setting or a franchise? i may or may not know it :0)?
    * (love all the descriptions of ur characters btw !! super interested in exploring cultural context-level and values differences, and love it when a character seemingly has it easier but not really (subverting what 'having it worse' looks like))
    * love 'neige-style plot armor', im sure in-universe twst fan forums analyze movies like that, are you doomed by the narrative like a vil-style character or are u plot armored up like a neige-style character, the quizzes meant to psychoanalyze u from ur responses must be amazing
    2. how would your yuusonas and twst!oc-inserts interact if forced into the same room? (with a reason, on a timeline of your choosing.) i'm always so curious/fascinated by the like, metaparallels that come of characters originated for related (but different) reasons/purposes
    3. what was your danganronpa background setting, 'main villain', and survivors going to be? (i actually recently got into a bit of a danganronpa (fanfic) binge so i'm hopeful i can understand fanworks about it now haha)
    4. how is the tokyo ghoul one (if theyre a ghoul) handling the ah dietary needs?
    5. omg naruto oc-insert fics strongly influenced the writing of ddb and morgan, please tell me more about your naruto oc-insert (and how are you handling their chakra system vs twst magic system? is chakra still around in twst without the sage of six paths and the moon goddess stuff going on?)

    1. 1. The xianxia setting I put them in has game-style Systems that immediately introduce themselves upon their arrival, so they know exactly what put them there (I did make some lore of how that System usually isekais people into more PG settings and how there was a fuck-up where they were supposed to be sent into Twisted Wonderland which came with a free translation spell, but it wasn't going to be focused on), and will be given the option to return home upon completing the “plot”. (The setting is SVSSS. I was being vague because it wasn’t a PG story but I already keep some of those bookmarks public so might as well be honest.) The plan was that the first 2 reincarnated yuusonas spent so much time in that xianxia world, they're hesitant to return to their old bodies because A) they're too ashamed of their change in morality to face their past friends/family, B) they're worried about reverse cultural shock, and C) returning to their old bodies would mean losing any strength/cultivation/social progress they made in the xianxia world (also the first guy had a bunch of allergies in his old body and would likely accidentally poison himself if he returned) (also both of them lived in the xianxia world longer than they lived in the original world, being only teenagers when they first died). The 3rd guy came from a toxic household with strict parents - he does miss his own world but at the same he doesn’t want to lose the freedom he gained and be stuck under them again. The 4th with the plot armor... THEORETICALLY she has the most motivation to go home but ngl she's kind of my least developed character out of the yuusonas, and due to the themes I assigned to her it's 50/50 on whether she Stays for True Love or returns. (They all grow to be pretty different from their twst selves)

      2. Okay so the actual plotline of The Fic I'll Probably Never Write actually have 4 main timelines - each one with one more yuusona added to the previous ones, but only one person per timeline actually having Yuu's plot armor (when a new Yuu shows up, the previous Yuusonas get sorted by the mirror). Timeline resets when the "Yuu" reaches a point where they aren't "Yuu" enough. The 1st Yuu (who has an "I" sound somewhere in his name, haven't decided btwn Ivan Isaac or something else) views the plot as a really annoying time travel story with smaller unwarranted time loops (for every time he tries to avoid a "plot-relevant" event) (also has underlying angst of his friends losing their memories together). (I think I’ll wait for either Chapter 7 or the Epilogue to end before I write a reason behind the loops.) 2nd Yuu is a girl who presents as a guy and lies about her name in the 3rd and 4th timelines, with wildly different relationships in the timelines she’s in due to butterfly effect (in all three having a strong dislike towards different TWST guys due to harm they caused to the other yuusonas). 3rd Yuu (whose name seems to be settling on Hallelujah “Hal”) is a guy who had official job training under Disney, knows “customer service smile” and is great at de-escalating but very hesitant in going directly against authority figures to their face. 4th Yuu (Eunice) is a mix between “Disney Princess” and “early 2000’s Disney Channel protagonist” (she was homeschooled and TV was her main source of “normal teenager things”). The below is the relationships in the 4th timeline, where all the yuusonas fell out of the same coffin clown-style.
      1st Yuu’s views on the other 3:
-2nd is smart and creative with plans but prone to bad influences (dislikes how she respects the tweels due to his 1st Timeline ending with them accidentally drowning him to death)
-3rd has the best social skills out of the group but is weirdly twitchy compared to how he was in the 3rd Timeline?
-4th is a naive trouble magnet (due to her Protagonist role) that the other Yuu’s shouldn’t spend too much time around
      2nd Yuu’s views on the other 3:
-1st gives a lot of cryptic instructions and sus knowledge, but he’s usually right so might as well go along with it
-3rd is a caring guy but sometimes he needs to mind his own business
-4th is the only other girl here which means we should hang out more! (not much else in common but both can learn!)
      3rd Yuu’s views on the other 3:
-1st is suspicious AF but genuinely seems to care about us with his plans
-2nd is polite and helpful but kinda selfish (feels guilt every time he sees her or 1st but doesn’t know why)
-4th is a kindest person in this school
      4th Yuu’s views on the other 3:
-1st seems to dislike her for some reason - she doesn’t know why and it makes her sad
-2nd is intimidating (gives her flashbacks to mean girls she’s met before switching to homeschool) but helpful when 1st isn’t diverting attention from the problem
-3rd is a nice guy but kind of a pushover when it comes to teachers + dorm heads

      3. For the Danganronpa background setting, I was just thinking "trapped in a school" (either 1st game, V3, or secret third option). "Neige-style plot armor girl" (AKA the 4th Yuu who I named Eunice) was planned to be the protagonist. (Meanwhile offscreen the 1st Yuu is using their time loops to actively prevent the more violent oc-inserts from murdering each other because they're also likely to take out 10+ witnesses). There aren’t really specific survivors or a "Mastermind" planned because it really was just an excuse for the inserts to meet each other, but I did have the idea of the Invader Zim insert (whose brain was previously used for a prison AI) being a hackable "traitor" and for the Mastermind to knowingly use the 1st Yuu to prevent too many people from being murdered at once. I also listed how likely each character was going to be a killer/victim (the Ghoul being more likely to try manipulating someone else to kill and gets accused a lot due to tampering with the crime scene, the 2nd Yuu possibly being a victim due to being too used to the tweels and getting caught off-guard by the wrong person, the Naruto one being more likely to murder someone who found out their past crimes then try to hide the body because they don’t trust the mastermind, the 3rd Yuu possibly panicking and killing one of the “dangerous” inserts with their Chapter 6 apocalypse experience). (The Naruto one and the Ghoul one have a high chance of collaborating, but will throw each other under the bus if A: the Naruto one decides to take their chances outside, or B: the Ghoul goes a month without eating)

      4. In the TWST world, the Tokyo Ghoul one is handling their dietary needs by signing vampirism medical disability prescription forms to receive regular blood bags (because it seems like the type of setting that would have that). In the Danganronpa one, they're just offering to help any killer hide the body (or stealing if the killer is gone before they show up). In the TG world, just same as other ghouls.

      5. The Naruto oc-insert is a war orphan who ended up separated from their siblings and stuck under Orochimaru, and is using their past life's education to elevate their position/"usefulness". (It was supposed to be the edgy insert but then I joined fandoms with way darker source materials and fics lol.) Didn’t really think too hard about the Chakra/Magic system - their notes in the alt isekai doc is legit just "will always choose to stay in the world they isekai'd into if it's safer than the Naruto world. will take out anyone who threatens to send them back if they manage to bring a family member with the isekai.” I always imagined they had average/below average Chakra reserves due to not being a clan member + being too wary of the military, so they relied more on weapons + poison + martial arts. If getting isekai'd to TWST was suddenly “Chakra no more”, they'd be annoyed about the stuff they lost but gladly accept the cost for the safety + resources Crowley provides (while shoving down the guilt of leaving behind their past connections who were also in bad situations). If it weren’t for their good internet skills, everyone would've thought they were a time traveler.

(Damn. I think this is the longest I've ever replied in a comment thread.)
