Comment on The Dark of the Morning

  1. It’s been a while since I commented, but I’ve been going through and listening to your podfic of Not All Those Who Wander, and I cannot imagine a work on this site that is more suited to be read aloud. It brings me a lot of joy to be able to hear you bring the characters to life, and I was beyond delighted when I realized these chapters were going to be posted along with podfic recordings! My dog even likes listening to you read, and there are only a handful of things he will tolerate me playing without headphones. (I’m serious, he barks at most podcasts, etc. that I put on.)
As for the notes, I quite enjoy the reminders at the end of each chapter of who characters are and what happened in previous works. But if they were not there, and I’ve forgotten something, it would just be a good excuse to go back and re-read your prior works, which is never a bad thing.
I look forward to the next update!

    1. Oh, I'm so glad you are enjoying the podfic! When I wrote that intro to Not All Those Who Wander from the perspective of the storyteller, I was fairly new to audiobooks (yes, I came late to that party!), and I didn't even know podfic was a thing, but I was thinking about the oral storytelling culture from which Tolkien's source material arose. I still remember the feeling of amazement, of "OMG this is so RIGHT" when I finished writing it; it felt like such a perfect framing device for the story. I can hear the characters' voices very clearly in my head when I'm writing, and sometimes the first draft is actually oral (dictated into my phone on long car drives; there's very minimal traffic where I live, and I promise I'm driving carefully!), so podfic does seem like a natural fit. And I'm glad your dog likes it too ;)
