I know. I live with two humans roughly the ages that Aang and Katara were in the show, so I tried to imagine how their peers would react to that perceived "betrayal." Plus, I came to this idea from the place of, "what would need to happen to make Katara turn out like she did in Korra?" I think we can all agree that LoK Aang didn't turn out to be a winner, so what would need to change for him, too? So I started there and and worked backwards until I hit a point of no return where the characters would have to grow or stagnate. I'm still writing the next couple of sections - I hit a snag on a transition chapter, but the return of badass Katara and sweet baby Aang is coming soon. After all, there's a big difference between 13 and 15 and 23 and 25 :) Thanks for reading my rambling thought process.
