I'm going to fail to articulate this but there's something that's soooooooooo good about the way that Feanor is in such a terrible state of grief, and so earnestly loves, misses, and wants to be with his sons, and yet the thing that is keeping them apart is their terror of the intensity of his emotions. They remember that intensity as characteristic of his rage and his hate, that outward fire, and it doesn't ACTUALLY matter that now the emotion driving the intensity is different, because the thing that traumatized him wasn't so much their father's anger as the fact that he can't help but spill his emotions everywhere when he's feeling ANYTHING and it tends to cause huge problems, and so of course they're terrified. It's not really anyone's fault but oh my GOD it's upsetting (complimentary)!!!!!!
The best portrayal I have seen of Feanor pre-Morgoth manipulations is good hearted but dial it back a notch or ten dude. It makes sense that re embodied Feanor is having issues doing anything emotional at a relaxed level.
